The article presents an assessment of three physical factors of the work environment, i.e. noise, illumination and microclimate in selected rooms of a hospital. The rooms were selected in cooperation with occupational safety and health services. Quantities characterizing noise, illumination and microclimate were measured in the operating room and in the sterilization and pathomorphology rooms. For this purpose, the measurement methods included in the standards were applied. The pilot study showed that noise limits were exceeded in terms of annoyance and that there is a need to improve illumination in the operating room, in the sterilization room and in the histological laboratory. In the operating and in the sterilization rooms, the requirement of thermal comfort was met with the assumption of low physical activity of employees, while in the pathomorphology room, changes are necessary.

Occupational safety and health are key issues today, with growing industrialization and labor market. To introduce and maintain a high standard of safety and health at workplace, it is essential to have an overall picture of the present workplace scenario, different hazards and probable health effects. This is a review of all previously published articles on occupational safety and health in Nepal. Key words such as Nepal, Occupation, Safety, and Health were used to search for relevant articles in PUBMED and Google Scholar. A total of 15 research articles were found, which dealt with different forms of work, like agriculture, health services, child labor, small scale household industries, brick kilns, and textile factories. The overall status of occupational safety and health does not look satisfactory. Standard work situations and criteria have to be set up and regular monitoring should be done to ensure the maintenance of quality at work. Key Words: environment; exposure; hazards; labor; work place DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijosh.v1i1.4725 International Journal of Occupational Safety and Health, Vol 1 (2011) 19-26

This article assesses the regulatory steer provided by the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, against the research evidence as to what works in making for effective worker representation and consultation on occupational safety and health. Based on the testimony of seafarers and regulatory agencies, it demonstrates that the Maritime Labour Convention provisions lack the necessary elements for an effective regulatory steer. This is because the conditions shown to support this form of representation are absent from or underdeveloped in the shipboard work environment. The article concludes with some suggested ways to enhance the Convention’s provisions to achieve a more positive effect for seafarers. JEL Codes: J28, J53, J83
