Apple contains high concentration of phenolic compounds that protect cells from oxidative stress. The prolong exposure of free radicals may induce cell damage and premature cell aging. Both local and imported apple contain flavonoid, saponin, tannin, steroid, and terpenoid. The extract of local and imported apples showed low toxicity on NIH3T3 fibroblast cells, with IC50 value of 529 and 463 µg/mL, respectively. Both apple extracts (50 – 250 µg /mL) protected three-day-H2O2 induced-cell damage and cell death. Protective effect was observed as the viability increase of treated cells compared to untreated ones. The protective effect of both extracts were higher than the effect of vitamin C as standard antioxidant at this study. Both apple extracts could reverse cell damage caused by three-hour-high concentration H2O2 exposure, similar with vitamin C. Low concentration of both extracts (50 µg /mL) induced the increase of fibroblast cells’ proliferation kinetics. The extract of imported apple showed higher properties of protective, cell recovery and proliferation of fibroblast cells tha local apple, but not statistically significance. This study concludes that the extract of local and imported apples have high potency in cytoprotective effect and cell recovery of damaged cells caused by free radicals induction. Both apple extracts have high potency to be developed the candidate of antiaging and cells’ regeneration agent.Key words: antiaging, cell recovery, cytoprotective, NIH3T3 cells

Cyclosporine A (CyA) is the first-line immunosuppressant used for the management of solid organ transplantation and autoimmune diseases. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can attack all types of macromolecules including DNA and damage it. Epicatechin (EC) is one of the most potent antioxidants present in the human diet. Particularly high levels of this compound are found in tea, apples, and chocolate. The goal of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of EC against CyA toxicity and its antioxidant activity in transplanted patients to avoid its side effects. Results obtained showed that, CyA exert its toxic effect by increasing the free radicals and ROS that causes lipid peroxidation and cell damage, this is detected by elevation of hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, while the activities of antioxidant enzymes include (superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT] and glutathione peroxidase [GPx]) were significantly decreased as compared with control rats. The deleterious toxic effects of CyA are, at least in part, due to increased production of free radicals and ROS. Treatment of rats with epicatchin ameliorates the toxicity of CyA by decreasing the lipid peroxidation and enhanced the antioxidants enzyme activities.

This study investigated the relationship between the intake of antioxidant nutrients and the suffering of cataracts in 177 institutionalized elderly people (61 men and 116 women) aged ≥ 65 years. Dietary intake was monitored for 7 consecutive days using a "precise individual weighing" method. Subjects, who during their earlier years were exposed by their work to sunlight, had a greater risk of suffering cataracts (OR = 3.2; Cl: 1.1–9.3, P < 0.05) than those who worked indoors. A relationship was found between increased vitamin C intake and a reduced prevalence of cataracts (i.e., when comparing those above P95 for vitamin C intake with those below P5; (OR = 0.08; Cl: 0.01–0.75, P 0.05). Among subjects with cataracts, 12.1% had vitamin C intakes of < 61 mg/day (P10) and only 2.2% had intakes of > 183 mg/day (P95) (p < 0.01). Subjects who consumed > 3290 μg/day (P95) of lutein were less likely to have cataracts (OR = 0.086; Cl: 0.007–1.084; p < 0.05) than those whose consumption was < 256 μg/day (P5). In men, high intakes of zeaxanthin seemed to provide a protective effect against the problem (OR = 0.96; Cl: 0.91–0.99; p < 0.05). The results suggest an association exists between exposure to sunlight and the development of cataracts, and that vitamin C, lutein, and zeaxanthin offer some protection against this disorder.

Nowadays, because of the industrialization, a lot of contaminant were available ; the consequences of this availability are apparition of diseases including neurodegeneration. Neurodegenerative diseases of the human brain comprise a variety of disorders that affect an increasing percentage of the population. This study is based on the effect of the Boswellic resin, which is from a medicinal plant and known for its antioxidant effects on nerve cell damage. The objective of this work was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo effects of the Boswellic resin on anticholinesterase activity and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) induced by D-galactose and aluminum tetrachloride in Swiss mice. Chemical composition of the resin essential oil was identified by the CG-MS analysis. The antioxidant activity was also assessed by the DMPD and metal chelation methods. In order to understand the mechanism of memory improvement, the acetylcholinesterase, AChE, and butyrylcholinesterase, BChE, inhibitory assays were performed. In vivo part of the study was achieved on Swiss mice divided into four groups: control, AD model, treated AD, and treated control group. The identification of chemical composition by CG-MS reach the 89.67% of the total extract compounds presented some very important molecules (p-Cymene, n-Octyl acetate, α-Pinene…). The present study proves that Boswellic resin improves memory and learning in treated Alzheimer’s group, modulates the oxidative stress and be involved in the protective effect against amyloid deposition and neurodegeneration, and stimulates the immune system in mice’s brain.

In living organisms lead is classified as potential toxic metal, and in high concentration can produce intoxication with the alteration of some vital organs, especially liver and kidney. In aquatic environment lead can be absorbed by fishes and other organisms, with different distribution in various tissues. Our aim of experiment was to verify and demonstrate the protective effect of lyophilized garlic and chlorella against bioaccumulation of lead in fishes living in aquatic environment deliberated polluted with lead. Thus, lyophilized garlic and chlorella administrated as supplements in fodder for fishes (Carassius gibelio) diminished the antagonistic effect of lead against zinc in all tested tissues: liver, kidney, heart, brain, ovary, testis, muscles myotome � epaxial, skin � with scales, gills, and intestine.

Fruits have an important economic impact in the context of plant-based food production. The consumption of fruit juices, mostly produced from concentrates, is particularly noteworthy. Conventional concentration methods do not always enable a sustainable and gentle concentration. The innovative gas hydrate technology addresses this point with its energy-saving, gentle character, and high concentration potential. In this study, the concentration of fruit juices and model solutions using CO2 hydrate technology was investigated. To find a suitable operating point for hydrate formation in the used bubble column, the hydrate formation in a water–sucrose model solution was evaluated at different pressure and temperature combinations (1, 3, 5 °C and 32.5, 37.5, 40 bar). The degrees of concentration indicate that the bubble column reactor operates best at 37.5 bar and 3 °C. To investigate the gentle processing character of the hydrate technology, its quantitative effects on vitamin C, betanin, polyphenols, and carotenoids were analyzed in the produced concentrates and hydrates via HPLC and UV/VIS spectrophotometry. The results for fruit juices and model solutions imply that all examined substances are accumulated in the concentrate, while only small amounts remain in the hydrate. These amounts can be related to an inefficient separation process.
