This paper is part of a qualitative research focused in vocational education & training (VET) about the expectations of students’ families on their future employment. It has been accepted till not so long that VET was the best way to get a job quickly. The current economic crisis may has altered this belief. So that we have interviewed some families from the South of Spain to better know what they think about their children’s decisions of being enrolled in VET. The data content analysis shows that they agree with their children academic choices (VET), and that they are worried about their future access to an employment. They criticize current politics and disagree with young people emigrating to other countries in order to get a better job.

The ongoing economic crisis in Greece has given rise to a new interest in apprenticeships, linked to the perception that such programmes can provide an alternative to an academic educational pathway that can boost the employment prospects of young people. Against this background and drawing on the findings of a large-scale, mostly qualitative, research project that reviewed the Greek apprenticeship system and involved surveying 150 stakeholders, this original exploratory article provides a critical, succinct, but also comprehensive exploration of three major themes associated with a key aspect of apprenticeships in Greece: labour market responsiveness. These themes which emerged from the thematic content analysis undertaken, are: (i) content-related issues; (ii) actor-related issues; and (iii) issues related to the mismatch between the offer of and demand for apprenticeship positions. The article argues that, despite some strengths, serious weaknesses jeopardize the potential of apprenticeships in Greece to function as an effective alternative to academic study and an efficient path towards labour market integration.

This study used five phased cycles in analyzing the data; compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. The result of analyzing the novels is emphasized in two focuses, including representation and interactive function. Several novels have a narrative aspect, while others contain conceptual interpretation, which is part of a representative function. It was very challenging to interpret some implicit meaning of the symbols in some of the novels as it requires mythical knowledge. Therefore, it is expected that understanding the implicit meaning comprehensively will make readers easier to understand the story outline of the novel.

Vocational education and training (VET) is high on the European agenda. This article adds nuance to the policy ambition of “fixing” parents’ views on VET. It is based on extensive qualitative research in Romania, with over 250 young people. An unanticipated finding was the “absence” of parents from the young people’s accounts, along with a tendency by the teachers and employers to blame young people for having “unreasonable expectations.” This article explores the deeper structural reasons for the current state of “parental disengagement.” It links parents’ precarious working lives with young people’s sense of disillusionment and communist nostalgia.

In the context of the recent economic crisis and rising inequality, interest in the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) as a viable alternative economic model has gathered pace in Europe. This article, based on an innovative content analysis approach of organizations’ websites from the LIVEWHAT project, provides a snapshot of the SSE sectors’ main features in three European countries, namely Greece, Spain, and Switzerland, to understand how the SSE is practiced in varying contexts, uniquely affected by the current economic crisis, as well as within diverse SSE origins. The findings shed some light on distinct features and similarities indicating that the Swiss SSE sector, in line with its interrelations with the Swiss market economy, shows a greater degree of formalization and professionalization that defines its management structure, main activities, types of beneficiaries, goals, and means to achieve them. On the contrary, the relatively recent expansion of the Greek SSE sector is intertwined with the economic crisis, which has left a critical imprint on the SSE’s management structure, activities, aims, and means of accomplishing them. The Spanish SSE sector’s main features, on the other hand, lie in-between the Greek and the Swiss ones, providing an amalgam of various features.

ABSTRACT Objective: to know the experience of institutional caregivers in child care. Method: qualitative research that used the Attachment Theory and the Symbolic Interactionism. Fifteen caregivers were interviewed, in 2015, in a child care institution based in a municipality in the south of Brazil. Data were analyzed through content analysis. Results: two categories emerged from the study: Embracing the children in the institution; Helping children adapt to institutionalization. Institutionalization imposes several social ills, such as abandonment and violence. These must be faced by caregivers, generating sadness and revolt. In addition, institutionalization leaves a mark on the child’s life, which belongs to no one, nor has his individuality and subjectivity preserved. Conclusion and Implications for practice: it is necessary to provide caregivers psychological support and Permanent Education so that they are supported in the work, improving the conditions of care offered to the child.

Recent studies reveal that a significant part of the European youth is still in difficult circumstances as a result of the protracted economic crisis. The situation is particularly hard in the south of Europe, where the level of youth un-employment is still high, and it seems uncertain whether it improves in the future. In addition, there is a growth in the share of so-called NEET generation, i.e. young people neither in employment nor in education or training. It leads to a dramatic waste of national human capital. Statistical data proves that the Spanish case study is one of the most complicated.
