Living in a foreign environment is a compelling experience for sojourners. A person’s ability to function effectively in a new society depends on his or her cultural adaptation. In their 1990 study on Singaporean and Malaysian students studying in Malaysia, Ward and Searle claimed that cultural adaptation consists of 2 separate dimesions, namely psychological and sociocultural adaptation. According to the researchers, one of the key factors affecting the sociocultural adaptation of an individual is cultural distance. According to Ward and Searle, the more distant the two cultures are, the more difficult is the person’s socio-cultural adaptation. Other studies in the field have also shown that perceieved cultural distance is just as important as real cultural distance. Students, an important group of sojourners whose numbers have been rising both in the world and in Turkey, are also affected by cultural distance. Cultural distance between the homeland and the country in which the international students are studying is thought to have an adverse effect on the foreign students’ socio-cultural adaptation. Cultural distance is also thought to affect negatively international students’ academic success by hindering their cultural adaptation. Dutch researcher Hofstede’s studies, which concretise cultural distance, have divided societies into 4 dimensions. According to the researcher, because different societies have different roles for teachers and students, students studying in a country that has different cultural dimensions than their own will have problems. Teachers may improve their student’s adaptation and academic performance by acknowledging the cultural dimensions of the students’ homelands and designing lesson plans accordingly.

Regions where universities and research institutes are located are attracting a vast majority of international students. Providing appropriate conditions for the social and cultural adaptation for foreign students to a local culture and social environment of the universities is an urgent issue that requires attention with a scientific approach. In this research authors considered a number of factors affecting social and cultural adaptation of the foreign students. The factors are combined according to the framework of potential challenges: person-person, person-environment, person-educational organization. In order to overcome these challenges this research suggests a number of initiatives to allow for a successful adaptation of international students to the regional social and cultural environments.

International students do just as well as Australian students. This is the key finding from a study of the academic performance of 338,000 full-time students at 22 Australian uni- versities in 2003. The results of the study are important to international education professionals globally at a time when there have been allegations that Australian universities were dropping stan- dards to favor foreign students. The Sydney Morning Herald claimed in June 2005 to have found evidence of quality falling at universities to cater to international students with poor English seeking degrees so as to be accepted for migration. The research proved these allegations to be untrue. Australian students passed 89.4 percent of courses attempted, international students 88.8 percent. The results suggest that in their recruitment of international students Australian universities set their standards at about the right level.

Abstract Background. Adaptation to the educational space of a university is a process that is a prerequisite and a way of socialization, allowing international students to actively engage in various elements of the social environment. This process can be made more complicated as a result of existing linguistic, every day, climatic, intercultural, interethnic, and motivational barriers. This research studies the relationship between acculturation strategies, socio-cultural adaptation, ethnic identity, cultural distance among students from arabic countries (Morocco, Syria, Egypt).Methods. The questionnaire included scales for assessing acculturation attitudes, ethnic identity, cultural distance, and sociocultural adaptation. The following techniques were used during the study: methodology of J. Finney, measuring the severity of ethnic identity (Phinney, 1992; Phinney & Ong, 2007), scales for measuring cultural distance (Wark & Galliher, 2007), questionnaire measuring acculturation strategies for migrants (Berry, 1997; Berry, 2005), scales for measuring sociocultural adaptation (Ward, Kennedy, 1999). The overall number of respondents was 248 (56 from Syria, 84 from Egypt, 108 from Morocco). The average age of the respondents is 28 years (min – 20, max – 34 years).Conclusion. Using correlation and regression analysis, we found that cultural distance is interconnected with sociocultural adaptation. However, among young migrants from arabic countries, ethnic identity and acculturation strategies are not linked to sociocultural adaptation. As a whole, our research shows the specific of adaptation of young arabs in relation to their host country.

Hong Kong, along with other Asian societies with universities with top world rankings, has in recent years attracted an increasing number of international students, mainly from Asia. Previous research in English-speaking Western countries has indicated the importance of resources, including language proficiency, positive intergroup relations, and social support, in understanding international students’ stress and coping in cross-cultural adaptation. Guided by a similar acculturative stress and coping framework, we investigated predictors of psychological and sociocultural adaptation in a survey sample of 726 international students (62% female and 73% Asian-born) from Hong Kong public universities. We found that English language proficiency, social support, and a low level of perceived discrimination fostered both types of cross-cultural adaptation, while contact with local students and proficiency in the local dialect further enhanced sociocultural adaptation. Implications for future acculturation research and higher education internationalization policies and practices are discussed.

Abstract Background The greater academic mobility and globalization have introduced a substantial number of foreign students to more universities. The lack of recent studies about their adaptation and signs of psychological distress arose an interest about this relevant issue. Recognizing the factors involved in the adaptation process are vital for international students, especially medical, as they are considered the future health-care workforce. Ensuring their well-being is essential for consumers safety, satisfaction and raising quality at lower costs. Thus, the aim of this research was to explore the predictors of psychological distress including socio-demographic variables and socio-cultural adaptation Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Belgrade School of Medicine, where 124 (65 males and 59 females) international students from 32 countries were interviewed using a socio-demographic questionnaire and psychometric tools such as Revised Socio-cultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS-R) and Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21). Statistical analysis included prevalence data and multiple linear regression. Results The prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress was found to be 39%, 55% and 41%, respectively. Maladaptation to a new environment by lack of participation in the community and focus on own interests were significant predictors of depression (β = −.39, p< .01) and stress (β = −.36, p< .05), while anxiety was associated with both female gender (β = −.30, p<.05), self-centration and absence of community involvement (β = −.37, p< .01). Conclusions There is a high prevalence of anxiety followed by stress and depression among international medical students. The results highlighted the importance of cultural adaptation for psychological distress. This shows a requirement for developing an adequate, accessible professional counselling and peer support services for foreign students that are necessary to achieve sustainable development goals. Key messages Encouraging researchers to further investigate the needs of international medical students. The development and implementation of health policies addressing student’s mental health.

In this study, the cultural adaptations of international students studying in Samsun in acculturation processes were examined. The cultural problems that international students inevitably face affect their adaptation to the countries they host. To investigate the effects of the international students' some variables on the cultural adaptation in the context of Turkey constitutes the main objective of this study. In the study, it was examined whether the cultural adaptation levels of international students vary according to gender, place of residence, academic achievement level, education level, faculty they attend, and their age. Within the scope of the research, 670 foreign students participated in this study. According to the research results, the general adaptation level of the students is medium. While the participants' age is a factor affecting cultural adaptation, the students' cultural adaptation does not change according to their gender, place of residence, level of education, academic performance, and the faculties they attend.

This conceptual article aims at analyzing the impact of political and economic actions taken by states during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic on their academic attractiveness for international students. The resulting crisis conditions demanded to make a lot of decisions in a very short time, thus speeding up the dynamic of the situation development and allowing to more accurately trace necessary interconnections over a short observation period. The authors focus their attention on English-speaking countries, which traditionally attract large numbers of international students: Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the USA. The research is based on the analysis of secondary empirical data obtained from foreign sources, as well as on official statistics. The short-term impact of political and economic decisions, made by heads of states and responsible institutions, on countries’ academic attractiveness and their perception by international students is assessed via critical and reflective analysis of surveys and researches, as well as via available data on international students’ enrollment in 2020/2021 academic year. The authors found a correlation between the decisions taken by the countries during Spring – Summer 2020 and the subsequent transformation of their academic attractiveness under the increasing competition between countries and the students’ choice of the best opportunities for their future career and life. The authors assessed the following factors affecting the attractiveness of a state as a studying destination: economic support measures taken by the governments of the considered countries during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, new adjustments in visa rules for foreign students and related regulatory changes, as well as the most significant public statements by officials. The research topic can be further expanded and supplemented through data actualization, including additional factors into the analysis and expanding the time period of the study. The findings and recommendations given in the conclusion of the article can be practically applied when developing state education export strategies or universities’ and educational agencies’ recruiting approaches.

The quantity of students from far and near abroad in Russian universities is increasing from year to year. This indicator shows not only the prestige of the Russian higher education system, but also the establishment of good-neighbourly, partnership relations. In this regard, the problem of successful adaptation of foreign students is considered from the point of view of strengthening the international status of the state as a whole. There are two aspects of adaptation, psychological (generalized) and socio-cultural (expressed), we studied 397 foreign students from universities in the south of Russia to investigate these aspects. We used express diagnostic tools designed on A. L. Sventsitsky “Self-assessment of psychological adaptability” and the scales “Social commitment to the country” and “Cultural commitment to the country” from S. V. Frolova’ questionnaire. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used for statistical data processing. Psychological and socio-cultural adaptation to educational conditions of south Russia universities were considered in the relation “isolation – identification” (V. I. Slobodchikov) and found a high rank correlation. Psychological and socio-cultural adaptation were considered in the ratio “isolation – identification” (V. I. Slobodchikov) and found a correlation of р 0.01. According to the results, students from far abroad demonstrated low psychological adaptability with high claims to the success of socio-cultural adaptation. Assistance in achieving it from university teachers will be especially effective when they combine academic work with solving problems of educational, professional, as well as social and communicative character. Students from neighbouring countries demonstrated an interconnected set of requirements for successful socio-cultural adaptation, focusing on social ties and keeping a distance in the field of culture. In this regard, the work of teachers to ensure the positive dynamics of intercultural relations with the involvement of traditions of interethnic good-neighbourliness in the southern region of Russia is particularly significant. Consequently, the present research materials are in need of the system of advanced training of the teaching staff, taking into account the difference in the cultural distance of foreign students.

The purpose of this study was to look into the various factors that influence the academic performance of freshmen and sophomores at Hufi University in Ho Chi Minh City. This study's participants were professors (30 males & 44 females). Using a questionnaire, a study was performed to collect information on various variables related to student academic success. The results of the annual assessment of their students measured academic success. According to the findings of the research, there is a close association between undergraduate and learning outcomes. However, there is little research on the relationship between psychological facets of the student body and academic success in Vietnam at the moment. Meanwhile, research into this partnership would aid HuFi University in further understanding the fundamental problems in student psychology, al-lowing it to develop the requisite activation plans to improve student efficacy as well as the school's training performance. With nearly 54,000 students, Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry is the largest main school in the South. With the student's latest academic performance being just average, students ranked the lowest in terms of putting their newly acquired experience and skills into work. This demonstrates that the school does not properly match the expertise and skills students learn with what life requires of them, resulting in human capital that is incapable of fulfilling potential socioeconomic growth criteria. A period of global economic integration, As a result, to contribute to the university's improvement as a school with a long tradition of experience.
