Research problem/aim: This study aimed to reveal the physical characteristics of the Sivas Cumhuriyet University Campus. University campuses are equipped with highly diversified physical qualities in terms of the design and planning stages. The quality and property of the physical space are the values that enrich and develop the livable, accessible, and perceptible features of the campus space. In this study, the basic physical components that make up a university campus were identified in order to analyze their qualities. Method: The method was based on fieldwork documentation tools such as observation, on-site examination, photography, and drawing. Accordingly, the Sivas Cumhuriyet University campus was evaluated in terms of its basic physical characteristics such as borders, building usage patterns, morphology, occupancy-vacancy, common areas, and green areas. Findings: It was determined that the campus space has a scattered and disjointed group of relationships, and individual and independent spatial arrangements present a fragmented appearance throughout the built environment. Accordingly, it was determined that the common and green areas and the occupancy-vacancy relations were disturbed, and a morphologically unstable and scattered physical space presentation emerged. Conclusions: Ultimately, this study, which analyzed the current physical environment of the campus, proposed the preparation of an urgent design guide for the campus in order to transform the built environmental components that have been constructed in a disconnected, dispersed, fragmented and unrelated manner into holistic, coherent and continuous spatial organizations.

With the advent of online distribution and the rise of multiple media devices, claims of the cinema’s imminent death have surfaced with greater intensity than ever before. Of course, with an ever-widening array of platforms these accounts have placed a newfound emphasis on the cinema as a distinctive physical space, one that plays host to a very particular and much cherished cultural activity. This article considers the substance of these claims by tracing a very particular historical route. Firstly, be revisiting Baudry’s notion of the dispositif, this article detects the importance of the physical environment in the process of film consumption. Secondly, I relate this emphasis on the physical to the traditional notion of the cinephile, a practice that ritualises the cinema experience. Many accounts across the spectrum of film history will attest to the profound ways in which the physical experience of the cinema summons a rich emotional response. Lastly, I consider how the cinema and the collective nature of film consumption provides an authentic trace to the past and a very certain time and place in history. In turn, despite competition from cheaper and more convenient platforms, this article will endeavour to show how the cinema retains its place at the centre of contemporary film culture. Prison as the place of work of the Prison Service staff is a specific workplace due to both the nature of the prison community as well as the infrastructural and architectural solutions deployed to protect prison officers. Considering the spatial features of a penitentiary unit and their role in the due performance of Prison Service tasks, it seems quite relevant to seek an answer to the question: How does the physical space of a prison contribute to the stress experienced by prison officers? The issue in question is rooted in M. Mendel’s concept of pedagogy of place, symbolic interactionism and S. Hobfoll’s conservation of resources theory. Inquiry into a research problem of this kind seems reasonable taking into account the infrastructural and spatial aspects of the surroundings that can be potential stress drivers. In April 2021, a group of 58 prison officers were surveyed based on the Stress Perception Questionnaire and the author’s questionnaire. Relationships between the variables have been established through the use of correlation, significant difference test and variance analysis. The results revealed that the essential spatial characteristics of a penitentiary unit associated with the perception of stress by Prison Service staff are those features that relate to the penitentiary unit’s functional aspects covering the specific technical and protective safeguards. These results formed a premise for designating higher-risk staff groups, with regard to which preventive programmes aimed at counteracting the negative effects of stress experience should be considered

Objectives, Purpose, or Aim: This article investigates whether the physical environment in which childbirth occurs impacts the intrapartum intervention rates and how this might happen. The study explores the spatial physical characteristics that can support the design of spaces to promote the health and well-being of women, their supporters, and maternity care professionals. Background: Medical interventions during childbirth have consequences for the health of women and babies in the immediate and long term. The increase in interventions is multifactorial and may be influenced by the model of care adopted, the relationships between caregivers and the organizational culture, which is made up of many factors, including the built environment. In the field of birth architecture research, there is a gap in the description of the physical characteristics of birth environments that impact users’ health. Method: A scoping review on the topic was performed to understand the direct and indirect impacts of the physical environment on birth intervention rates. Results and Discussion: The findings are organized into three tables reporting the influence that the physical characteristics of a space might have on people’s behaviors, experiences, practices and birth health outcomes. Eight building spaces that require further investigation and research were highlighted: unit layout configuration, midwives’ hub/desk, social room, birth philosophy vectors, configuration of the birth room, size and shape of the birth room, filter, and sensory elements. Conclusions: The findings show the importance of considering the physical environment in maternity care and that further interdisciplinary studies focused on architectural design are needed to enrich the knowledge and evidence on this topic and to develop accurate recommendations for designers.

This case study examines the physical aspects of a particular university classroom, and what affect specific changes to the classroom had on the perceptions of students, instructors and observers regarding the room as an effective learning space. We compare survey and focus group data collected from students taking courses in the classroom prior to changes to the physical environment with comparable data from students taking courses in the same classroom after specific changes had been made. Immediately following changes to the classroom, notable increases were observed in reported perceptions of student satisfaction with the physical environment, including perceptions of the classroom as a more effective and engaging learning space. Similar perceptions of improvement as a teaching-learning space were reported by instructors and observers. However, subsequent follow-up data collection and analyses suggested little if any sustained increase in perceptions of efficacy of the room as a learning space; indeed, most reported variables returned to baseline levels. The implications of these findings and their relevance to classroom design nevertheless may provide insight regarding the manner in which physical space might support or even enhance teaching and learning.

University campus gardens provide the integrity of the environment with educational buildings, connect the users and buildings, and provide liveable spaces for users. Campuses serve as a public space for academic, administrative and technical staff, especially students, as well as incoming visitors. As a public space, the ability of students to meet all their recreational, social and cultural needs is directly related to the content and designs of the open and green spaces of the campuses. It is essential to ensure the landscape designs of these spaces, in line with the structural and planting design principles, and with the successful composition of the user-space relationship where the user needs and desires are determined. From this point of view, it is aimed to evaluate the landscape designs of the two campuses of Trakya University, where art and design-oriented education is realised, in terms of user satisfaction. For this purpose, it was revealed by a survey that measures the satisfaction of the users of the two campuses where determined the spatial and landscape requirements of design-based education. In the survey, the users' duration and purpose of use of the campus, feelings created by various equipment on users, the usage the building and gardens and the current conditions of the campuses were determined. The frequency percentages of the data obtained in the survey study were evaluated using the SPSS 26.0 program. As a result, suggestions have been developed to improve the current use of the two campus gardens and to ensure the sustainability of the spaces.

Entrepreneurship has emerged over the last three decades as arguable the most potent economic force the world has ever experienced. This economic expansion has paralleled rapid growth in the field of entrepreneurship education. Recent developments in curricula and programs devoted to entrepreneurship, new venture creation and corporate innovation have been remarkable. The number of colleges and universities that offer courses related to entrepreneurship has grown from a handful 35 years ago to over 3000 today. In the midst of this expansion lies the challenge of establishing and sustaining entrepreneurship programs in universities across the globe. (Morris, Kuratko & Cornwall, 2013) The literature review will help inform us of the current status of entrepreneurship programs on university campuses and provide us with some indication of any changes in the idea of where to place a new program.

The physical configuration of the university campus impacts upon student learning and experience, and can be used to signal institutional priorities. The extent to which campus, particularly in post 92 institutions, is designed as opposed to evolving as older buildings are repurposed or replaced is variable. Student experiences and perceptions of the campus physical space are also unclear. This study aimed to explore student perceptions using qualitative methods. Data were collected during 8 focus groups from 37 participants. The majority were young and female, with considerable ethnic diversity. Six major themes were identified, many of which did not directly relate to the physical space itself. Rather the impact upon students’ emotional experience and engagement with the institution was emphasised. ‘Belonging’ was the most common theme; indicating that the nature of the physical space on campus is not neutral, but can affect the extent to which students can form attachments with each other and academic staff. ‘Nature’ was the second most commonly mentioned theme. Green space has therapeutic potential in stress management, important given mental health concerns in young people including students. The ideal campus as described by participants would include green non-smoking spaces with an emphasis on health promotion. Opportunities to include nature on campus should be taken, and future proposals to design the campus should canvas student views.

Key drivers that influence space design in today's higher education environment are technology, changing demographics, increased focus on student engagement, and carbon footprint. Just as important, but not typically on the list, is the growing population of students with Learning Disabilities (LD) for which the physical environment plays an increasingly important role in successful learning outcomes. The research goal was to examine the role of “place” as a component of academic success for those students with LD. Methodology included both literature review and the development of a case study analysis of three post-secondary institutions in the United States. The universities were chosen based on the size of the university, the campus setting, and the mission of the Disabilities Services team. The conclusion of the research surfaced three specific components of the physical environment that hold an increased value for a student with LD. These components are wayfinding, formal learning spaces, and disability services spaces. The key to integrating a sense of place with the needs of students with LD is moving beyond meeting the minimum standards of the legal mandates and bridging the principles of universal design to the built environment.

This chapter explores the existence of therapeutic jurisprudential approach in the present laws and guidelines that may address sexual harassment in the university campuses in Delhi, India. It has been seen that sexual harassment in the college campuses has often been overlooked as courtship problems between young adults. In this course, the trauma and victimization of women had also been overlooked. This chapter suggests that university campus sexual harassment may be exhaustive and it may include various forms of harassment including physical touching, verbal sexual bullying to even graver offences like molestation. This chapter researches on several forms of sexual harassments which are prevalent in the university campuses and which may defy the existing regulations due to the patriarchal social setup. It further researches on needs of therapeutic jurisprudence to deal with such problems.

This chapter focuses on the development of mobile applications in a research strategy that combines computer sciences and architecture and urbanism. The main goal of the research is to develop mobile applications that help specific target people in daily life situations and that clearly contribute for advances in the fields of computer sciences and social responses. The authors discuss a group of mobile apps that were developed for smartphones and tablets and that respond to the following broad goals: 1) mapping of the physical space in order to adapt it to respond better to the users' needs, 2) adaptation of the physical space to the users' needs, and finally, 3) give the users a better knowledge about the physical space they are in. For each app developed, the authors describe the research problem involved, the goals, the development process, and the developed solution as well as the tests conducted to measure their performance. Usability and satisfaction tests revealed that the developed apps have a good acceptance by the target users.
