Detective fiction as parodic reformulation of genre’s defining patterns has a long history in the Latin American tradition: Borges, Bioy Casares, Soriano, Levrero, Ibargüengoitia, etc. Besides, the evolution of Latin American detective genre has always been characterized by a progressive focalization in the social aspects over the detective story line which has served as a mask to depict in a critical way the flaws of the region’s societies and governments. In nowadays Cuba it could be highlighted the crime narrative of parodic slant by Lorenzo Lunar Cardedo. Among the major features of Lunar Cardedo’s style there are the marginal atmospheres, the stylization of popular speech, the intertextuality, the humor, the parody, and the social criticism. This article focuses on the parodic, intertextual and satiric aspects of his work, particularly discernible in the novel Proyecto en negro (2013), in which the author emphasizes – in opposition to the official discourse – the perpetuation of corrupt, chauvinist, racist, and homophobic behaviors in contemporary Cuba, while relaxing the genre formula limits in order to follow a much more irreverent path within the new Latin American detective fiction.

Let Fair Weather Bring Me Home: A Maltese Story (Excerpt from unpublished novel)Life in itself largely depends on one’s personal relationship with nature. Humankind develops as it discovers new modes of relating more efficiently with whatever surrounds it. Thus both the individual and the social aspects of such a condition greatly  depend on each other. Let Fair Weather Bring Me Home is a Maltese novel which strives to portray such a bond in terms of what it entails to live in a traditional village far removed from the center of the country where nature had to succumb to a great extent to the dictates of culture, and mainly to technology. The descriptive element of the novel, as evinced in this excerpt, is meant not only to construct a context within which the villagers live, but also to suggest a sharp contrast with the modern city, impersonal, overcrowded, noisy and inevitably distant from spaces which are considered to be still undeveloped, namely still left in their primeval state. The depiction of such a way of life in such a village, inspired by an environment typical of Southern Europe, may seem to be simply an evocation of the past, as it originally is, but it also recognizes the fact that such a relationship with nature still survives in various parts of various countries. The essential message of the excerpt is that modern ecological considerations are necessarily the expression of  humanity’s need to rediscover nature and to return to where it once belonged.

Este artículo sintetiza los resultados de un trabajo investigativo que busca, a través de la crítica literaria y la teoría de la subalternidad, repensar la historia de aquellas personas a las que se consideraba como subalternos en la sociedad latinoamericana. Este documento destaca los aportes socioculturales de dos razas (indígena y afrodescendiente), representadas por dos protagonistas de la novela Eclipse de luna, del escritor colombiano Ricardo Estupiñán Bravo, quienes por cosas del destino afrontan un apasionante universo de amor, dolor y muerte. En términos claves, erguido con firmeza sobre dichos supuestos, Estupiñán expresa, con esta maravillosa novela, la dolorosa y cruda verdad de la subalternidad en Nariño, el desarraigo y la miseria de Cumbal y Barbacoas. Por esta razón, se realizó una interpretación que desplaza los discursos coloniales al olvido y legitima la heterogeneidad cultural y literaria que presentan las letras de Nariño, el mundo sureño, en cuyo verbo prolifera la libertad.ABSTRACTThis article summarizes the results of a research project which seeks, through literary criticism and the theory of subalternity, to rethink the history of those who are regarded as subordinate in Latin American society. This paper highlights the social and cultural contributions of two races (indigenous and African descent), represented by two main characters in the novel entitled Lunar Eclipse by the Colombian writer Ricardo Estupiñán Bravo. These characters, for reasons of fate face an exciting universe of love, pain and death. In key terms, standing firmly on these assumptions, Estupiñán through this wonderful novel describes the painful and raw truth of subalternity in Nariño and the uprooting and misery of Cumbal and Barbacoas. For this reason, an interpretation that displaces colonial discourses to forgetfulness and legitimizes the cultural and literary heterogeneity expressed in the letters of Nariño - the southern world-, was performed-, in which the word freedom revolves.RESUMOEste artigo sintetiza os resultados de un trabalho de pesquisa que busca, através da crítica literaria e da teoría da subordinação, repensar a historia daquelas pessoas às quais são considerada como subordinados da sociedade latinoamericana. Este documento destaca as contribuições sociais e culturais de duas raças (indígena e afrodescendente), representadas por dois protagonistas da novela Eclipse de luna, do escritor colômbiano Ricardo Estupiñán Bravo, quem por coisas do destino diante de um apaixonante universo de amor, dor e morte. Em termos chaves, erguer-se firmemente sobre ditas suposições, Estupiñán expressa, com esta maravilhosa novela, a dolorosa e crua verdade da subordinação em Nariño, o desenraizamento e miséria de Cumbal e Barbacoas. Por estarazão, se realizou uma interpretação que move os discursos coloniais ao esquecimento e legitima a heterogeneidade cultural e literária que apresentam as letras de Nariño, o mundo do sul, no qual se dá a proliferação da liberdade.

The study analyses István Szilágyi’s widely known novel Kő hull apadó kútba («A Stone Drops in a Dwindling Well») from the viewpont of fatefulness and falling into sin. The novel is an outstanding work in the 20th century hungarian literature, written by István Szilágyi who lives in the present Romania, Transylvania. The main character, Ilka Szendy faces with ethical dilemmas which can be examined from newer trends of cultural studies such as xenology. This study focuses on the following questions: how does the social system and compunction distort the personality? How does Ilka Szendy become a foreigner in the milieu in which she grown up? What kind of poetical pecularities, motifs, time and place usage represents the girl’s fate in the 20th century by the author? In the beginning of the study I explain the process how the literary historians realised the significance of this novel. This is an important issue because the history of hungarian literature and the history of hungarian literature across Hungary’s border developed differently in the 20th century – different experiences and poetical pecularities can be found in a novel. There are three different reading and canonizing strategies which outlined from the criticisms and studies: in the case of the first one, the emphasize was on the novel’s social aspects. The second one focused on the poetical aspect and structure. In the 2000s occurred the newest strategy which analyses the novel from the viewpoint of cultural studies. In this study I apply this third strategy. With the help of close reading I try to attempt connecting the own body’s alienation and the multiplication of the main character’s (Ilka Szendy) personality with the traumas that she experienced at her young age. Several experiences preceded the fall into sin (murdering), but the narrator tells them only later in the novel. As a reader we can explore the most effectively the fall into sin and the fulfillment of destiny through the context of Ilka Szendy’s experiences, deeds, thoughts, motifs, metaphors and the secrets that lead us into the family’s past. In the end of the study I connect Ilka Szendy’s destiny with her family’s past. The girl died beceause she rode for the fall. She knew that she could never be relesead from her guilt, she could receive absolution only by death.

Aravind Adiga’s novel, Between the Assassinations offers a picturesque presentation of the implications of castes and religions in our country. The author through the novel explains, how religious and caste activists are exploiting the marginalized people in India. The manipulation is showcased, realistically in the form of life situations through his characters. Between the Assassinations is a collection of short stories that spellout historical events that happened during the seven years lapse of time, between the assassination of Former Prime Minister Indra Gandhi, and her son Rajeev Gandhi. The seven stories highlight the dynamics of multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious practices that are prevalent in India.  Each story line is independent from the other, while the setting of each story and its character sprung up from the town Kittur. The story’s milieu, portrays the hindrances, characters face and how they overcome such hazards from the religious activists.

This research is based on the fact that novels are still popular in Indonesia with a background of women who are portrayed as weak creatures compared to men from all aspects. Novels with a theme like this are still very popular today, even though novels are one of the media to convey information to society so that people's perceptions of women are shaped like that. The purpose of this research is to describe the representation of feminism in the economic and social aspects of the novel Namaku Dahlia. The type of research used in this research is qualitative descriptive analytical method. The data source in this research is the novel Namaku Dahlia by Syafrizaldi. The data collection technique used is literature. The theory used in this research is feminism. The results of this study indicate that the novel Namaku Dahlia contains feminist ideas specifically in the economic and social fields. The results showed that there were four data representing feminism on the economic aspect and three data representing feminism on the social aspect.

Ecranisation is transformation of written text in a novel into motion pictures in film. In so doing, the transformation undergoes three kinds of characteristics which become the main analysis in ecranization study, namely reduction, addition, and variation of change. This article discusses the results of a study on how the three processes in terms of social setting have contributed to the alteration of storyline. Objective data were collected through purposive sampling in this qualitative study from the novel and its film of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. The results show that the storyline in the film is socially constructed differently from its origin in the novel. It was found that the social behavior and the characterization in the film are not depicted in the same way as in the novel. As the novel is the benchmark for identifying any changes of social setting in the film, it is implied that the transformation has failed in taking into various social aspects as inherent element of storyline in the novel.

Abstract Socio-cultural Reflection in Faisal Oddang’s Novel Puya ke Puya. This study describes the individual and socio-cultural aspects of the Toraja tribe, as reflected in the novel Puya ke Puya. This is qualitative research using the approach of the sociology of literature. This research's object is a novel entitled "Puya ke Puya," written by Faisal Odang. The focus of this research is the socio-cultural aspects of the Toraja tribe. This research's data are in the form of words, sentences, and discourses in the novel. This research combines the sociology of literature and anthropology of literature. Through these two approaches, the researcher describes the socio-cultural aspects of the community of Toraja. Data that have been collected were analyzed using a data analysis technique model developed by Talcott Parson.The social aspects of the Toraja tribe in the novel include economic systems such as livelihoods, government systems, and social community systems such as social strata. Meanwhile, the cultural aspects of the Toraja culture include belief systems, myths, and culture. Then the individual aspect consists of the individual aspect by reviewing the characters in the novel. The results of data analysis show that the social and cultural aspects of Toraja in Puya ke Puya related to the dominant livelihood system are agriculture and livestock; The two sectors have a major influence on the social and cultural life of the Toraja people. Then in terms of governance, the Toraja community has a customary community led by Pennuluan; and the last is the caste system in Toraja, which is composed of four castes, which are the basis of all the implementation of cultural life in Toraja. The next portrait concerning cultural aspects is a belief system called Aluk Todolo. The Aluk Tadolo belief system is the foundation of Toraja's culture, such as the two major rituals, namely the Rambu Tuka "or happiness ceremony and the Rambu Solo" as a mourning ceremony. The last one is that the novel shows the individual aspects of Toraja's community, which are generally still bound by culture and society. Penelitian ini memadukan telaah sosiologi sastra dan antropologi sastra. Dengan penggabungan pendekatan tersebut diperoleh deskripsi data aspek sosial budaya masyarakat Toraja. Data-data yang diperoleh dianilisis dengan menggunkan model teknik analisis data yang dikembangkan oleh Tallcot Parson. Aspek sosial suku Toraja yang terdapat dalam novel Puya ke Puya karya Faisal Oddang meliputi sistem ekonomi seperti mata pencarian, sistem pemerintahan dan sistem komunitas kemasyarakatan seperti strata sosial. sementara itu untuk Aspek budaya budaya suku Toraja meliputi sistem kepercayaan, mitos, kebudayaan. Kemudian aspek individu menguraikan aspek individu dengan meninjau tokoh dalam novel. Dari hasil analisis data, diperoleh hasil bahwa dalam aspek sosial budaya di Toraja dalam novel Puya ke Puya menunjukkan bahwa sistem mata pencarian yang dominan adalah dari sektor pertanian dan peternakan, sebab kedua sektor tersebut berpengaruh besar dalam kehidupan sosial dan budaya masyarakat Toraja, kemudian dari segi pemerintahan masyarkat Toraja mempunyai komunitas adat yang dipimpin oleh Pennuluan, dan yang terakhir adalah sistem kasta di Toraja tersusun atas empat kasta yang menjadi dasar dari segala pelaksanaan kehidupan berbudaya di Toraja. Gambaran selajutnya adalah dari segi aspek budaya yang menunjukkan bahwa di Toraja terdapat sistem kepercayaan yang disebut Aluk Todolo yang merupakan landasan dari kebudayaan yang ada di Toraja, seperti dua ritual besar yakni Rambu Tuka’ atau upacara kegembiraan dan Rambu solo’ sebagai upacara duka cita. Dan yang terakhir bahwa dalam novel tersebut menujukkan mengenai aspek individu masyarakat suku Toraja yang pada umumnya masih terikat oleh budaya dan sosial. This article argues that Suki Kim’s The Interpreter (2003) is influenced by and, at the same time, critically revises early American hard-boiled crime fiction, the genre with which it is least likely to be associated. Although dead bodies do not pile up in the novel, the urban world in which Kim’s protagonist operates, attempting to solve the case of her parents’ murder, is as treacherous as the world portrayed in early hard-boiled detective fiction. Kim has inherited from early hard-boiled crime fiction such elements as its rugged individualism, a cynical-but-sentimental worldview, and not least, its social concerns about economic inequality and corruption among the powerful. At the same time, Kim’s novel subtly reconfigures her hard-boiled sleuth as well as adapts the genre to a contemporary racial context. In this revision, both the institutional and personal practices of racism are placed on trial. Female solidarity is also celebrated as a means to counter the violence and corruption of a racialized society. In so doing, Kim’s novel subverts both the sexism and racism of the traditional detective genre. The conclusion of this article is that the novel legitimates a female immigrant and person of color’s right to belong and challenges the white masculine hegemony that the traditional hard-boiled genre maintains.

This research is based on thought that the novel is an imitation or reflection of society (mimetis). There are motives, purpose, and messages the author wishes to convey through his opus. The object of this research is the novel Matinya Sang Penguasa (MSP) by Nawal el Sadawi. In the MSP, there is a social gap between the rich and the poor, and between the ruler and the people. Class gap and this social class contradiction enter domain sociology of literature, especially Marxist literature. This research aims to answer the problem how social aspects, Like the social class structure, the novel relationship with society, and the author's position or ideology that exists in the novel MSP. The results show that there is a social class contrast in the novel MSP. The upper social class is represented by the ruler (Walidesa), while the lower social class is represented by the people (Zakeya). The author's position and ideology appears in the lower classes, which seeks to fight for its rights and against the arbitrariness of the (authoritarian) authorities. This authoritarian ruler then elicits resistance from the people. The fight between the ruler and the people was won by the people.

This study aims to expose the Burmese women portrait under British Imperialism. The writer believes that Burmese Days is created as a response to the social phenomenon that was happening during the process of its creation. This study used a qualitative method using a sociological approach by Laurenson and Swingewood. The data of this study were collected from the description and utterances of the characters and narrator in the novel. The result of this study shows that the women were portrayed as the slave of the English men. The women are not valuable, they merely become entertainment for the English men to entertain them. Even, some of the Europeans have concubines to accompany them in killing their time or killing their boredom. It looks like the women are created for the English men as dolls which can be played as often as they can, and of course, like a doll, they can be thrown easily after the English men being bored. As this research limited to the analysis of women portrait as a concubine for the English men, it is suggested for other researchers to analyze and find the relevant problems that still exist around the society, such as social inequality, resistance, obedience, strategy, gender, racism, corruption and other social aspects in the novel Burmese Days.
