SummaryIntroduction Seed germination is a complex physiological process regulated by genetic and environmental factors including temperature, water, oxygen, light and pH. Among them, temperature is one of the most important factors controlling the maximum rate and percentage of diaspore germination. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the cardinal temperatures (Tb, To, Tc) of four Satureja species growing in Iran. Methods: Seeds of Satureja mutica Fish. et C. A. Mey., S. macrantha C. A. Mey., S. sahandica Bornm and S. bachtiarica Bunge were germinated at nine constant temperatures (from 0 to 40°C) with 5°C intervals. A factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with four replications was applied to determine the cardinal temperatures estimated by three regression models including intersected-lines (ISL), quadratic polynomial (QPN) and five-parameters beta (FPB). Results: The highest germination percentage (GP) occurred at 20°C for S. mutica (86%), S. macrantha (55%), S. sahandica (81%) and S. bachtiarica (89%), but there was no significant difference between 20 and 25°C, except S. sahandica. Germination stopped at 0°C and 40°C. The highest germination rate (GR), the lowest mean germination time (MGT) and time to 50% germination (D50) were obtained at 20-25°C for all species. The GRmfor S. bachtiarica was significantly (p≤0.05) higher than for three other species in all temperatures. None of the species did reach to 50% germination at temperatures higher than 30°C. Conclusion: Obtained results revealed the superiority of S. bachtiarica over the other species, v.s. S. macrantha was inferior. FPB and ISL models were most reliable for predicting cardinal temperatures, because of higher R2value and the lower root mean square error (RMSE). S. macrantha and S. mutica showed the lowest and the highest cardinal temperatures, respectively, in all three models.

Summary The focus of this study is based on the examination of the germination traits and the development of thermal models of the medicinal plant Salvia leriifolia Benth. A laboratory experiment was carried out at constant temperatures ranging from 0 to 35°C, at 5°C intervals in a completely randomized design with eight replications. To describe the germination rate response to temperature, three regression models, namely Intersected-Lines (ISL), Quadratic Polynomial (QPN) and Five-Parameters Beta (FPB) were used. The highest Germination Percentage (GP) (92.8%) occurred in 15°C, but GP in the range of 10-25°C was not significant (p≤0.05). The germination process stopped at 0°C and at above 30°C. The results indicated that the highest Germination Rate (GR), the lowest Mean Germination Time (MGT) and also times to 50% germination (D50) were obtained at 20°C. Seeds did not reach to their 50% germination level in temperatures higher than 25°C. The FPB model had the best realistic estimation for cardinal temperatures. Based on models estimation, Base (Tb), Optimum (To) and Ceiling (Tc) temperatures were in the ranges of (1-1.9°C), (18.1-20.8°C) and (34.5-38.7°C), respectively.

ABSTRACT: The goal of this work was to characterize morphometrically diaspores from three species of mistletoes (Passovia pyrifolia, Struthanthus marginatus e Phoradendron mucronatum), as well as to study its germination behavior according to temperature and luminosity. In germination tests, the completely randomized design was used, in factor scheme 4 x 2, with 4 replications of 15 diaspores. The factors for the first test were different temperatures and two diaspore conditions (intact and without epicarp). In the second test, factors were different light qualities and two diaspore conditions. The analyzed variables were: germination percentage, germination rate index (GRI) and mean germination time (MGT). Mistletoe’s diaspores present an elliptic shape with viscin layer, an essential characteristic for the dispersion of the species. In addition to this, they present a distinction as for the moisture content when compared to the Loranthaceae and Viscaceae, where the latter presents the highest content. Germination is greater at the alternated temperature of 20-30 oC for P. pyrifolia and P. mucronatum diaspores and 20 oC for S. marginatus. Luminosity interfered in the germination of P. mucronatum and S. marginatus but did not influence P. pyrifolia. The diaspore condition influenced the germination of the three studied species, observing a significant increase in their germination when the epicarp was removed. Temperature and luminosity interfere directly in the GRI and MGT of the three mistletoes species.

Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) has a hard and impermeable pericarp, which make an obstacle for it’s germination. Scarification of seed is needed to breakdown the physical dormancy of seeds. One of the methods to break the physical dormancy is stratification by soaking seed in to the water in some different temperature level.  The aims of the study were to determine the effectiveness of stratification and to figure out the best water temperature in breaking the dormancy. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in four treatments (control, water immersion at 25°C, 50°C, and 75°C) with four replications was employed as research design.  Statistical analysis was conducted using homogenity of variance, variance analysis, and least significant difference tests. The result showed that the water immersion of arenga seed at 25°C and 50°C resulted in the germination percentage, germination rate and test germination that was comparable to control. Water immersion at 75°C reduced the percentage of germination and germination rate, however the treatment could increase the germination test. Water immersion of arenga seed at 25°C, 50°C, and 75°C were not effective to break the dormancy of sugar palm seed.Keywords: aren seeds, dormancy, water immersion

Plants such as wheat and barley that are strategically important crops need to be considered to develop a comprehensive toxicity profile for nanoparticles (NPs). The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of chitosan and SiO2 NPs on wheat and barley plants. Two factorial experiments (seeds priming and direct exposure) were performed based on a completely randomized design in four replications. Results showed that the seeds priming with the NPs had not significant effect on germination parameters such as Germination Percentage (GP), Germination Rate (GR), Germination Value (GV), Mean Germination Time (MGT), Pick Value (PV) and Mean Daily Germination (MDG). In contrast, exposure of the seeds to the NPs had significant effects on these parameters. In both experiments, treatments had significant effects on shoot, seedling, root length, fresh and dry weight, as well as vigor indexes as compared to the control. In most traits, the best concentration of NPs was 30 ppm, whereas applications of the NPs with 90 ppm displayed adverse effects on majority of the studied traits. According to these results, selectivity in applications of NPs with suitable concentration and method is essential for different plant species.

Soybeans undergo rapid deterioration due to its chemical composition and unfavourable storage conditions. The objective of the research was to determine the length period of seed hidration and dehydration which is integrated with rhizobateri to viability and vigor of deteriorated soybean seed.  A completely randomized design with four replicates were used in this experiment. Seeds were treated with varied combination of hydration period in a rhizobacteria suspension and followed by dehydration time.  Data were analysed using the F-test and significant differences were further tested with Least Significant Difference at the 5% level. Results showed that the hydration and dehydration period of seeds in a rhizobacteria suspension improved viability and vigor of seed which have 59.5% initial germination percentage. The improvement was 12.28%, 0.56, 25.4% and 1.4 days for standard germination test, vigor index, first count test percentage and T50, respectively. The hydration for 60 minutes followed by dehydration for 60 minutes gave the best results on seed viability and vigor.

Erythroxylum pauferrense is an endemic understory plant species of the Northeast Region of Brazil. The species is of great importance to the region and so ecophysiological studies are needed for its preservation. The objective of the present study was to determine the best substrates and temperatures for testing germination and seed vigor of E. pauferrense. An experiment was performed comprising a completely randomized design in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme, with five temperature regimes (20, 25, 30, 35°C constant and 20-30°C alternating) and four types of substrates (paper, vermiculite, sand and commercial substrate). The following characteristics were evaluated: germination percentage, first germination count, germination speed index, mean germination time, seedling length and dry mass (root and shoot). Paper and vermiculite substrates combined with constant temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and alternated between 20-30°C, provide greater seed germination and vigor while 35°C reduces seed physiological quality.

However, the germination growth of red palm is slower than other kinds of palm, so the best way to germinate the red palm seed is needed. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of apliccation some young coconut water concentration and kascing fertilizer to red palm seed germination. The research used factorial completely randomized design with 5 replication, the first factor is young coconut water concentration (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) and the second factor is germination media (steril sand and kascing fertilizer). Variables measured were live germination percentage, speed germination rate, radicula length, and plumula height. Results of this study showed that the best germination media is steril sand and 0% concentration of young coconut water.

This research aimed to investigate the effect of various scarification treatments on the germination of tree saga seeds (Adenanthera pavonina L.). This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments in this study were P0 (control), P1 (soaked using distilled water for 24 hours), P2 (soaked using hot water 60 °C for 15 minutes), P3 (sanded skin), P4 (soaked using 1% H2SO4 for 30 minutes), and P5 (soaked using goat urine for 30 minutes).  The data obtained were analyzed by Analysis of Variance and continued with the Least Significant Difference Test (LSD) level of 5%. The results showed that the treatment had a very significant effect (P <0.01) on germination rate. The best treatment that can increase the germination of a tree saga seeds (Adenanthera pavonina L.) was by eroding the seed skin using sandpaper. This treatment can produce an average germination of 78.89%, while the treatment that produce the highest abnormal seeds was found in the treatment by soaking using 1% H2SO4 for 30 minutes.  The treatment that produce normal seeds, dead seeds, and the highest fungus-stricken seeds were found in the treatment by eroding the seed skin using sandpaper. The treatment that produced the highest hard seed was control.   Keywords: Germination, Saga, Scarification.

Soil salinity affects a large and increasing amount of arable land worldwide, and genetic and agronomic solutions to increasing salt tolerance are urgently needed. Experiments were conducted to improve wheat seed performance under salinity stress conditions after priming. An experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design of four replications for germination indices in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Caxton). Normal and primed seed with PEG6000 at  MPa and five concentrations of NaCl (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM) were tested. Results indicate that priming seed significantly () increased germination percentage at first count and final count, coefficient of velocity of germination, germination rate index, and mean germination time, while increasing of NaCl concentration significantly reduced it. Priming seed improved germination attributes at all NaCl concentration levels. The priming appeared to be able to overcome the effect of salt stress at 50 to 100 mM and reduce the effect of NaCl at higher concentrations up to 200 mM. The primed seed gave both faster germination and led to higher germination when under salt stress. We conclude that using priming techniques can effectively enhance the germination seed under saline condition.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima is an exotic shrub species, belonging to the Fabaceae family, that has medicinal properties, and is widely used for urban afforestation. The objective of this research was to evaluate the overcoming of the C. pulcherrima seed dormancy, the influence of temperature, storage, and water quantity on the substrate in the germination of the species, as well as the use of the tetrazolium test for viability analysis. The analyzes were carried out at the Plant Propagation Laboratory at the Agricultural Sciences Center of the Federal University of Alagoas, in the municipality of Rio Largo, Brazil, and at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Arapiraca Campus, at the same University. The experiments were performed under a completely randomized design, with four replicates of 25 seeds. The results demonstrated that during storage the seeds developed a possible secondary dormancy, which was overcome with a time of twelve months of storage. The C. pulcherrima seeds subjected to the test of light qualities presented a significant difference in their germination percentage when verified with the time of storage. In the far-red quality, the newly harvested seeds had a germination percentage of (98%), higher than seeds with 12 months of storage (80.5%). The water volume 3.5-fold the weight of the dry paper provides (90%) germination when compared to other volumes. The tetrazolium salt concentrations of 0.075% and 0.1%, under the temperature of 30&deg;C within 2 hours, are indicated for the viability analysis of Caesalpinia pulcherrima seeds.
