Abstract Introduction: The objective of this paper is to analyse the correlation between pain and the degree of disability, and the lesions shown on radiological examination of KOA. Material and method: The study encompassed 31 female patients (42 knees) aged 51-70 years, with diagnosed idiopathic knee osteoarthritis. Medical history and analysis of previously performed x-ray scans were conducted. The history included questions regarding pain (VAS, WOMAC index) and the maximum marching distance, the presence of oedema and instability as well as disability in everyday life (WOMAC index). The radiological lesions were assessed using the Kellgren and Lawrence Grading Scale. Moreover, the widths of the joint spaces were measured. Results: The patients’ pain in everyday activities (WOMAC) showed a positive correlation with the presence of osteophytes (r=0.32), and the intensity of the pain on the VAS correlated with the presence of joint osteophytes (r=0.46) and with the elevation of the intercondylar eminence (r=0.32). The other disorders on the x-ray image did not correlate with the pain. Positive correlations were identified between the presence of oedema (r=0.57) and instability (r=0.39), and the presence of lesions in the patellofemoral joint. The patients’ disability in everyday activities (WOMAC) showed a negative correlation with the width of the joint spaces (r<-0.34). However, no correlations were observed between the remaining x-ray lesions and the WOMAC index. Conclusions: Only a small number of subjects showed a correlation indicating an interdependency between the painful sensations and the degree of disability versus the progression of radiographic lesions. Among the KOA risk factors, it is worth noting the presence of obesity which, in these studies, affected more than half of the female patients.

Objective: to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and the incidence of osteoporosis (OP) and sarcopenia (SP) in women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Patients and methods. Eighty-one women (mean age, 59.0±8.1 years) with a reliable diagnosis of RA were examined. The women underwent the following studies: a survey using a special questionnaire; tests to measure the functional status of muscles, including those to determine their strength; as well as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry of the axial skeleton and whole body.Results and discussion. According to the EWGSOP2 criteria, 20 (24.7%) female patients were diagnosed with SP, 24 (29.6%) had OP, and 39 (48.2%) had osteopenia. OP in female patients with and without SP occurred in 35.0 and 27.9% of cases, respectively (p>0.05). BMD in the femoral neck and in the proximal femur as a whole was significantly lower in the presence of SP than in its absence (p=0.0006 and p=0.0061, respectively). The frequency of falls was significantly higher in the female patients with SP than in those without SP (p=0.028). The major osteoporotic and hip fracture probabilities calculated according to the FRAX ® algorithm was higher in the patients with SP than in those without SP (p=0.041 and p=0.033, respectively). There were positive correlations of BMD with body mass index, appendicular muscle mass, appendicular muscle index, hand strength, shoulder circumference, and the serum levels of calcium, creatinine and uric acid, as well as negative correlations with age, postmenopausal length, and RA duration.Conclusion. OP and SP are common RA complications that increase the risk of falls and fractures.

The detection of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a subjective task, and even two highly experienced and well-trained readers might not always agree on a specific case. This problem is noticeable in OA population studies, in which different scoring projects provide significantly different scores for the same knee X-rays. Here we propose a method for quantitative assessment and comparison of knee X-ray scoring projects in OA population studies. The method works by applying an image analysis method that automatically detects OA in knee X-ray images, and comparing the consistency of the scores when using each of the scoring projects as "gold standard." The method was applied to compare the osteoarthritis initiative (OAI) clinic reading derived Kellgren and Lawrence (K&L) scores to central reading, and showed that when using the derived K&L scores the automatic image analysis method was able to accurately differentiate between healthy joints and moderate OA joints in ~70% of the cases. When the OAI central reading scores were used as gold standard, the detection accuracy was elevated to ~77%. These results show that the OAI central readings scores are more consistent with the X-rays, indicating that the central reading better reflects the radiographic features associated with OA, compared to the OAI K&L scores derived from clinic readings.

The soils developed under High Altitude Rocky Complexes in Brazil are generally of very low chemical fertility, with low base saturation and high exchangeable aluminium concentration. This stressful condition imposes evolutionary pressures that lead to ecological success of plant species that are able to tolerate or accumulate high amounts of aluminium. Several analytical methods are currently available for elemental mapping of biological structures, such as micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-EDX) and histochemical tests. The aim of this study was to combine μ-EDX analysis and histochemical tests to quantify aluminium in plants from High Altitude Rocky Complexes, identifying the main sites for Al-accumulation. Among the studied species, five showed total Al concentration higher than 1000 mg kg−1. The main Al-hyperaccumulator plants, Lavoisiera pectinata, Lycopodium clavatum and Trembleya parviflora presented positive reactions in the histochemical tests using Chrome Azurol and Aluminon. Strong positive correlations were observed between the total Al concentrations and data obtained by μ-EDX analysis. The μ-EDX analysis is a potential tool to map and quantify Al in hyperaccumulator species, and a valuable technique due to its non-destructive capacity. Histochemical tests can be helpful to indicate the accumulation pattern of samples before they are submitted for further μ-EDX scrutiny.

Abstract We explore the accretion states of tidal disruption events (TDEs) using a sample of seven X-ray bright sources. To this end, we estimate the relative contribution of the disc and corona to the observed X-ray emission through spectral modelling, and assess the X-ray brightness (through αox, L$_{2\ \rm keV}$, and fEdd,X) as a function of the Eddington ratio. We report strong positive correlations between αox and fEdd,bol; fEdd,X and fEdd,UV; and an anticorrelation for L$_{2\ \rm keV}$ and fEdd,UV. TDEs at high fEdd,bol have thermal dominated X-ray spectra and high (soft) αox, whereas those at low fEdd,bol show a significant power-law contribution and low (hard) αox. Similar to X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei, the transition between X-ray spectral states occurs around fEdd,bol ≈ 0.03, although the uncertainty is large due to the small sample size. Our results suggest that X-ray surveys are more likely to discover TDEs at low fEdd,bol, whereas optical surveys are more sensitive to TDEs at high Eddington ratios. The X-ray and optical selected TDEs have different UV and X-ray properties, which should be taken into account when deriving rates, luminosity, and black hole mass functions.

The object SS433 is a well-known source of relativistic jets, which are formed in supercritical accretion disk. It is very probable that the disk has polar channels and their radiation is collimated (the photo-cones). A face-on SS433 object can appear as ultra-bright and highly variable X-ray source, Lx ˜ 1040 − 1042 erg/s. We discuss the properties of these hypothetical objects and their frequency expected in galaxies. We describe a search for such objects using the ROSAT All Sky Survey and RC3 catalog of galaxies. Among the total 418 positive correlations we find that 142 sources in S and Irr galaxies are unknown as AGNs. Nuclear sources among them still contain many AGNs. Non-nuclear (offset) sources are rather hard, their X-ray luminosities are 1039 − 1041 erg/s. Their observed frequency is about 4–5% per galaxy, that is in agreement with expected frequency of the face-on SS 433 stars. The only way to recognize such stars is their expected violent variability in X rays.

:Since disabled people have lower income and their geographical mobility is lower, they often tolerate inappropriate housing conditions, i.e. conditions that do not suit the type and degree of their disability. This article presents the results of interviews conducted among people affected by various degrees of disability. The main aim of the study was to determine the housing needs in regard to quality and to the extent to which the needs are satisfied by people living in the north-east of Poland. The first stage of the study involved identification of the factors that determine the quality of housing that satisfies the basic needs and barriers which prevent performing everyday activities. Subsequently, a multidimensional analysis was conducted to assess the extent to which the housing needs are satisfied in groups identified by the degree of disability. The synthetic measures and distance-related indexes suggested the existence of large diversity in the level of satisfaction of housing needs in the groups of disabled people under study.

Aims: This retrospective analysis was done to describe the difference in the prevalence of osteoporosis/low bone mass between women referring themselves to bone mineral density (BMD) testing with dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and women referred by their family practitioner. Methods: Women were recruited by a health promotion action in a Swiss weekly periodical and compared with female patients sent by their physician for DXA testing for various medical indications during the same period. Patients under steroid treatment, known previous fracture and undergoing follow-up for low bone mass were excluded. Self referred women were compared to female patients aged 40 years and older and the same evaluation was repeated for women aged 65 and older. Results: No differences were found in the prevalence of osteoporosis /low bone mass in women referred by their physician vs those who were self referred. However, a significant difference was found with age: the self referred women were 63.1 ± 8.6 years of age whereas the patient group’s mean age was 59.7 ± 9.4 (p=0.0001, 95% CI of the difference: 21 – 61 years). Conclusion: We suggest that health promotion actions might be able to recruit the correct candidates for BMD testing, since we found no significant difference in the prevalence of osteoporosis/ low bone mass between self referred and physician referred women. Our data further suggest that physicians may react earlier on their patient’s risk profiles than the time frame of action by the self-referred women.

Abstract A progressive bacteria invasion on tooth tissues leads to pulp inflammation, microabscesses of the pulp, destruction and in consequence inflammation of periapical tissues. Therefore the aim of endodontic treatment is three dimensional debridement of a root canal from the vent in pulp chamber to the physiological narrowing. Therefore the aim of the study is analysis of root canal configuration, number of canals, presence of lateral canals and canal delta with the group of first permanent molars. At the same time the accuracy of the radiological examination (x-ray images) is estimated due to comprehension of X-ray images performed before teeth preparation with root canal system and after observation of transversal cuts by means of light microscopy and microtomography. This establishment is presented through the differences in conventional radiological image and clinical assessment.
