AbstractA machinable α-Al2O3/mica composite was prepared by hot-press sintering. In this experiment, a mica-contained glass ceramic in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-F glassy system was employed and the base glass powders were obtained by traditional melting-quenched method. Then, α-Al2O3 milling swarf was introduced by medium α-alumina milling ball to the glass powders. The test results indicate that the composites consist of mica crystal and mullite crystal, which are precipitated in the base glass. The α-Al2O3 shows an irregular polygon, which is inlayed in the base material. With the decrease of size of the base glass powders, the boundaries of composites among the sintered powders gradually vanish. The mica crystals in the composite also show an interlocking characteristic, which is a prerequisite of mica-contained glass ceramics with good machinability. Under different pressures, the tendency of preferred orientation is decreased with the reduction in grain size of glass powders, and the microstructure is proved to be consistent, significantly decreasing the composite’s hardness. Therefore, the machinability of the composite is improved.

AbstractMotivated by recent finding of crystallographic-orientation-dependent etching behavior of sintered ceramics, the plasma resistance of nanocrystalline Y2O3-MgO composite ceramics (YM) was evaluated for the first time. We report a remarkably high plasma etching resistance of nanostructure YM surpassing the plasma resistance of commercially used transparent Y2O3 and MgAl2O4 ceramics. The pore-free YM ceramic with grain sizes of several hundred nm was fabricated by hot press sintering, enabling theoretical maximum densification at low temperature. The insoluble two components effectively suppressed the grain growth by mutual pinning. The engineering implication of the developed YM nanocomposite imparts enhanced mechanical reliability, better cost effectiveness with excellent plasma resistance property over their counterparts in plasma using semiconductor applications.

An Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was prepared with Fe-Fe2O3-Al2O3 powder by a hot press sintering method. The mass ratio was 6:1:2, sintering pressure was 30 MPa, and holding time was 120 min. The raw materials for the powder particles were respectively 1 µm (Fe), 0.5 µm (Fe2O3), and 1 µm (Al2O3) in diameter. The effect of sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was studied. The results showed that Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was formed by in situ reaction at 1300 °C–1500 °C. With the increased sintering temperature, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite showed a change law that initially became better and then became worse. The best microstructure and optimal mechanical properties were obtained at 1400 °C. At this temperature, the grain size of Fe and FeAl2O4 phases in Fe/FeAl2O4 composite was uniform, the relative density was 96.7%, and the Vickers hardness and bending strength were 1.88 GPa and 280.0 MPa, respectively. The wettability between Fe and FeAl2O4 was enhanced with increased sintering temperature. And then the densification process was accelerated. Finally, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4 composite were improved.

Csf/Si3N4 composites were prepared by hot-press sintering method using α-Si3N4 power, short chopping carbon-fiber and sintering additives. XRD analysis showed that the α-Si3N4 was almost completely transferred into β-Si3N4. The SEM micrographs of fractured surfaces showed that special network developed by rod-like β- Si3N4 grains. The flexure strength of 590±10MPa, and fracture toughness of 7.94±0.1MPa·m1/2 were achieved for the samples incorporated with 0.5wt% the carbon fibers .The microwave dielectric property of Csf/Si3N4 composites was measured at a frequency range of 8.2~18GHz by E8362B PNA series network analyzer. The real part (ε ′ ) of the permittivity of the Csf/Si3N4 composites increases from 10 to 58 with the rise of the content of carbon fibers in the composites, as well as the imaginary part increases from 0.03 to 98 at frequency of 9.375GHz. A strong frequency dependence of the real part was observed both in X and Ku bands.

Al2O3-MgO, Al2O3-Y2O3 and Al2O3-MgO-Y2O3 composite ceramics were fabricated respectively by hot-press sintering technique. With the analysis of the mechanical properties and microstructure, it was found that single additive MgO could be more favorable to the grains’ refinement and densification than Y2O3; the composite additive including both MgO and Y2O3 was better than single additive MgO or Y2O3, because their interactions could improve the mechanical properties of the Al2O3 ceramics; The sintering temperature could be reduced by adding the suitable amount of composite additives.

In this study, Mn doped Cu12-xMnxSb4S13(x=0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) tetrahedrite samples were prepared by melting and annealing followed by hot press sintering. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and electron energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis were performed for the samples, and the thermoelectric transport properties of samples were characterized. The experimental results showed that the synthetic tetrahedrites were consisted of principal Cu12Sb4S13 phase and a small amount of secondary Cu3SbS4 and CuSbS2. The electrical conductivity of the tetrahedrites decreased with increasing the Mn doping amount. Contrary to the electrical conductivity, the Seebeck coefficient of the tetrahedrites increased with increasing Mn doping amount. The thermal conductivity decreased with increasing Mn doping amount due to the suppression of the carrier contribution, as well as due to the substitution effect of Mn on the Cu site. For the Mn doped Cu12-xMnxSb4S13 compounds with x=0.5, 1.0, and 2.0, the ZT values decreased with the increase of Mn doping amount, a maximum ZT=0.89 was obtained for the Mn doped compound with x=0.5.

In order to investigate the effects of TiN content on Al2O3/TiN ceramic material (ATN), the ATN ceramic materials were prepared of TiN content in 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% in the condition of hot press sintering. The sintering temperature is 1700°C, the sintering press is 32MPa, and the holding time are 5min, 10min, 15min. The effects of TiN content on mechanical properties and microstructure of ATN ceramic materials were investigated by analyzing the bending strength, hardness, fracture toughness. The results show that ATN50 has the best mechanical property, its bending strength is 659.41MPa, vickers hardness is 13.79GPa, fracture toughness is 7.06MPa·m1/2. It is indicated that the TiN content has important effect on microstructure and mechanical properties of ATN ceramic materials.
