AbstractMajor deficits, known as innovation gap or renewal paradox, related to the project-based production structures in construction, result in high knowledge waste and efficiency loss. Current innovation dynamics aim at overcoming these structural disadvantages by designing products and services set apart from the one-off project logic. They are heavily influenced by cross-sectoral knowledge combinations coming from the automotive industry, the service sector, engineering or information and communication technology (ICT), as well as by knowledge combinations which stem from integrating different trades into the planning process of a construction project. This paper argues that different kinds of knowledge combinations initiate various degrees of change within the existing sectoral structures. They indicate the sector’s path plasticity.

This chapter explores the role played by Information and Communication Technology tools in the management of indigenous Knowledge in general. Of importance to note, therefore, is the fact that the emergence of Information and Communication Technology tools has opened new avenues in Indigenous Knowledge Management (IKM) which have the potential of playing important roles in the society by making the valuable knowledge available to everyone who recognizes and uses it. Given the nature of indigenous knowledge which is commonly exchanged through personal communication and demonstration exemplified as deriving from the master to the apprentice, from the parents to the children, from the one neighbour to the other and so on. Information and Communication Technology tools appear to be providing as a solution in forestalling the possible extinction of IK.

Given the relentless development of intelligent information and communication technology (ICT) systems, a growing need for cities to transform towards smart solutions and, on the other hand, a lack of firm methodological approaches to implement such transformations, the paper contributes to establishing a theory for modeling the transformation of cities towards sustainable, smart cities. The article presents the results of research: a model and a visualization method for supporting cities in elaborating and implementing transformation strategies. The authors’ experience is that intelligible, algorithmizable, and easily visualized models are being sought to assist city authorities in making informed decisions regarding the development of their cities. The paper proposes the concepts of the smartness zone and sustainability corridor, which allow one to devise and visualize the process of a city’s development and transformation in a simple, coherent, and comprehensible way, and to observe and monitor its development path. It presents a new generic instrument for modeling transformation strategies, which are the tools addressed to municipal authorities, analysts, and developers who can use them in order to design, implement, monitor, and optimize transformation strategies towards smart cities.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Governance is increasingly necessary and present in organizations aiming to improve the maturity of their ICT processes. This paper presents an analysis of the ICT Governance processes of a Brazilian Federal Public Administration agency. To assess the maturity of the ICT Governance processes, we surveyed and diagnosed the processes performed by the agency and organized a series of meetings/discussions to assist in the improvement and modeling of the processes related to the ICT Contract Planning process. As a result, we proposed improvements and identified the maturity level of the existing ICT processes, also assessing the awareness of employees of the General Coordination of Information Technology regarding these processes. Our findings reveal that the agency still needs to implement the following processes: (1) ICT People Management; (2) Business Process Modeling (Automated/to Automate); (3) Change Management; (4) Execution Monitoring of the ICT Projects and Services Portfolio; and (5) ICT Service Continuity Management. We also identified several artifacts that need to be implemented by the agency in different processes and collected survey participants’ suggestions about new processes to improve the maturity in ICT Governance.

We understand sustainability as a perspective on the performance of various kinds of systems that puts human well-being in the center of focus. Recognizing that information and communication technology (ICT) is shaping our modern society, there is a need to understand the impact of ICT on sustainability. On the one hand this can be achieved, for example, by extending classic software development approaches to cover sustainability issues. This can be coined sustainability in ICT. On the other hand, innovative ICT approaches offer the potential of directly addressing sustainability issues (sustainability by ICT). Within the ICT4S community, both perspectives are addressed. What is missing, is an overarching perspective that helps to identify interlinkages. In this contribution, we present the case of an online-shop selling ICT hardware products as an community exemplar. We exemplify the usefulness as an overarching example, by relating parts of our existing work on ICT sustainability to it: a process model of the sales process, as well as a representation of sustainability risks related to the sold ICT products. Additionally, we show how ICT4S papers from 2016 can be mapped to the exemplar. We conclude with presenting a community website, where we invite fellow researchers and practitioners to contribute to a growing wealth of sustainability insights.

Based on examples of the application of e-government, this paper aims to provide a theoretical study on how the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) helps to increase the innovation dynamics of the regional systems. According to the literature review, we understand the innovation dynamic of a regional system is generated from the interplay of the knowledge production between different actors such as government, university and industry. ICT can be viewed as the stimulus of facilitating the e-government to develop the innovation dynamics. Accordingly, some examples of the application of e-governments around the world will be provided for a deep understanding the link between ICT and innovation dynamics.
