The article analyses research data and scholarly approaches to the study: of problems of parents arising from their child’s illness; the emotional states of parents raising a child with developmental disabilities; stages of emotional experience related to the birth of a sick child. The family as an integral unit has to face various situations determined by the social impact of the child’s disease or impairment, as well as emotional and psychological reactions of the parents to it. Being aware of the psychological stages singled out in the grief theory helps professionals: to understand the reaction of the family of a child with developmental disabilities; realise when and how it is best to intervene, flexibly apply the theory of stages, and account for the specific characteristics of a particular family and individual reactions to such shocks.

This study was undertaken to determine whether families of children with cystic fibrosis were experiencing difficulties in meeting family needs and in maintaining normal family relationships. It was found that families were not deprived of the essentials of living, but they were not able to maintain their usual pattern of family relationships. Time and energy precluded carrying on activities with each other and with the children; and there was breakdown in their ability to communicate adequately between themselves and the children regarding important family issues. In order to preserve the family as a functioning unit, someone has to be concerned about the entire family. Of necessity, the family has focused on the sick child, leaving the physician, the nurse, the social worker and/or the social agencies to help the family refocus on its total situation, rather than just a part of it. Traditionally, the mother takes care of the sick child. It is she who takes the child to the doctor's office and is responsible for carrying out his recommendations. In the care of a CF child, she assumes a heavy burden and frequently is fatigued from this responsibility. Because she is so tired and so occupied, she may misunderstand or distort what she is told by the physician, and may not be able to tell her husband or the children what they need to know in order to participate in family activities and in the care of the CF child. This situation can easily lead to misunderstanding and tension within the family. To avoid this, both parents could be encouraged, at some point, to come together to the physician's office for discussion. Such discussions could lead to more consideration and appreciation being given to each other. It might lessen the tendency for each to blame the other for the child's illness and could avoid the feeling voiced by one mother, "I would like to blow him out of his chair so that he would help me and understand what I go through." We also need to realize that the CF child is frequently aware of the demands he makes on the family. If these demands are not discussed freely, then everyone is caught in a "web of silence" revolving around his own feelings of frustration. This creates a burden for everyone, including the CF child, and if not discussed it can impair the psychological functioning of all members. The CF child needs to be encouraged to participate in his own care program and to assume some responsibilities for himself. He should not reach the age of seven being unable to tie his own shoes or dress himself, as has been observed in some CF children. It would seem feasible, therefore, that the CF child should have an awareness of what is wrong with him, and what his abilities and limitations are. The other siblings should also be given as much explanation as possible because they, too, are part of the family and attention and care is being diverted from them. This explanation could make for more understanding on the sibling's part. While it would still be difficult for him to accept some of the decisions made (such as why the parents could not get home from the hospital in order for him to use the family car for a senior prom), he would know that it was the situation that was causing the decrease in attention and care rather than rejection of him by the parents. In order to give these families as much assistance as possible, the community's resources should be utilized. Frequently, the parents are unaware of these or need encouragement to avail themselves of services. The homemaker service or visiting nurse service could free the family from constant care; the local youth program could be helpful to the siblings in the family, and Family Service Agencies could be used for counseling on family problems. In summary, this study points up the need for the total family to have an understanding and awareness of CF and to share such knowledge with one another; that all problems of the family have to be considered and not just those of the CF child; and that help from other professional people should be utilized along with sources of the community.

Military families face unique challenges during the various stages of the deployment cycle. The impacts of these challenges are felt by all members of the family and the children in particular. The social-emotional strains that children experience during a military parent deployment can negatively impact their emotional state as well as their school performance. The reintegration of the service member back into the family is typically stressful but more so when the service member has posttraumatic stress disorder or some other injury. Children respond to deployment stressors differently depending on their age. These responses are discussed along with strategies which are designed to help support the child and the family throughout the deployment. Strategies for the school setting as well as in the home are shared.

This study aims to analyse the different IVF services and its possible impact on family and social life, after the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors selected the Kingdom of Bahrain as a context for the research and explored the IVF influence on the ‘family stability’ and the ‘social stability’. The framework proposed shows the importance of future foresight of IVF transformation in both the area of life and livelihood. The study used a quantitative method to understand the type of demands on the supplied IVF services, and where the capacity could be raised in the new normal. The paper concludes that IVF could be a source for family stability and as one of the means of controlling the rising of psychosocial phenomena in the future. The other implication of this study calls for monitoring the rapid increases of dependency ratio, as fertility ratio drops, and how IVF services should be planned as part of a national policy; especially with the repeated emergency crisis.

This research was conducted at the Population and Civil Registry Office of Mamasa Regency which was conducted in April-May 2020. The approach in this study was a qualitative descriptive based on the phenomenology that occurred. The data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature study. The objectives of this study are: (1) To find out the relationship between mamasa traditional marriage and children born out of wedlock; (2) To understand the role of Mamasa culture in making birth certificates for children born out of wedlock; and (3) To find out the social impacts arising from the marriage of children born out of wedlock. The results of the study show that: (1) The mechanism of Mamasa traditional marriage for children born out of wedlock is carried out through traditional rituals as a tradition, which in terms of Mamasa indigenous people is called ‘dipa’arrangi tangangana langi’ which means ‘reappointed in dignity’. The family of the father of the child born out of wedlock goes to the family of the mother of this child to acknowledge that the child has a biological father who is ready to take responsibility as a father; (2) The role of Mamasa tradition in making birth certificates for children born out of wedlock so far has not been carried out as the regulation in Perda Number 5 in 2017. The making of birth certificates for children born out of wedlock in Mamasa Dukcapil is not an approved Customary Institution: and (3) the social impact of Mamasa traditional marriage to children born out of wedlock gives recognition of the position of the children in the family and social environment. In addition, the mothers’ families also received back their dignity. However, there are negative impacts of the existence of traditional marriages which can set a bad precedent for the environment of indigenous peoples. This is because the perpetrators are not given customary sanctions which can have a lucrative effect.

The relevance of the study of the conditioned capabilities of society for the development of active, successful, harmoniously developed, self-sufficient personality, that is capable of effective communication with other people. This becomes possible due to the high level of development emotional intelligence. The purpose of the article is to determine the leading features of the development of emotional intelligence of children of senior preschool. Theoretical methods used: analysis, synthesis, systematization, generalization, classification, etc. The essence of the leading categories is determined, in particular: «emotional intelligence», «emotional intelligence of children of senior preschool»; the leading features of its development at this age stage are characterized. Thus, the leading features of the development of emotional intelligence of a senior preschooler include: active development of the emotional sphere of a child; expansion of social contacts, which affects the intensity and quality of communication with others on the one hand, on the other − helps to navigate the diversity of emotional states of people, promotes the accumulation of emotional experience in senior preschoolers; expanding the range of emotions that a child is able to recognize, their verbalization; formation of ability for the volitional regulation of emotional manifestations against the background of situationality; formation of emotional decentration and the formation of ability for the emotional foresight. Instead, a fundamentally important thesis on the development of emotional intelligence of senior preschoolers still needs systematic, purposeful work by adults in this direction, because it is difficult for a child to recognize the causes of emotional state, effectively regulate emotions and build an adequate model of behaviour based on emotions they demonstrate. Prospects for further research on the development of emotional intelligence of senior preschoolers are identified.

At the heart of social cognition is our ability to distinguish between self and other and correctly attribute mental and affective states to their origin. Emotional egocentricity bias (EEB) reflects the tendency to use one’s own emotional state when relating to others. Although interoception underpins our emotional experience, little is known about its role on how we affectively relate to others. Here, we assessed how cardiac interoceptive impact, manipulated by presenting affective stimuli across different phases of the cardiac cycle coupled with trait-like levels of interoceptive accuracy, modulate the EEB. Individuals with higher interoceptive accuracy displayed an increased EEB when the other’s emotional state was presented at the point of maximum interoceptive impact (i.e., at systole), whereas the reverse was observed for individuals with lower interoceptive accuracy. These findings show how interoceptive activity provides the physiological context within which we process other’s emotional states in parallel to ours.

SummaryThe study was conducted at the “Niño Jesus” School, located in the “Dolores Marin” neighborhood, urban sector of Siuna Municipality, North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN), at a distance of 334 km from the capital Managua. The objective was to determine the disciplinary behavior with a study population of 82 girls and 103 boys of the school, 7 teachers, 1 director, and 78 fathers and mothers. We highlight that the social factors that have affected the disciplinary behavior in the childhood is a product of the education provided from the family environment. In the stage of childhood is likely to have behavioral problems, when someone is affected by the economic situation, their living conditions, emotional state, family disintegration and an inadequate pedagogy; also the role played by the School Counseling in this context is very important in the orientation and implementation of educational plans to solve different problems. The research was qualitative -descriptive. The techniques used were: focus group interview and direct observation in the classroom.

SummaryHaemophilia, one of the oldest known genetic disorders, imposes varying degrees of disability on those affected. A survey of 137 haemophiliacs, seventy-eight adults and fifty-nine children, in the north of England was conducted to discover the extent of social, educational and employment problems created by the disease, while investigation of sixty-nine mothers of patients provided information on its impact on family life. Some problems are adequately met, others not; those of education and employment are the most serious. Educational deficiencies are due to incomplete and interrupted schooling. Choice of employment is severely restricted for them, and stability of employment is adversely affected by episodes of ill-health. But with improved methods of medical treatment the children are losing less school time than the adults did, fewer of them attend schools for the physically handicapped, and this should result in the attainment of better educational standards, and therefore more hope for permanent and satisfactory employment in the future. The birth of a haemophilic child markedly affects the family, particularly the mother, but again there is a difference in response between the present and the older generation of mothers.

Purpose This paper aims to explore consumers’ cognitive responses to the presence of other people in a planned lifestyle center. The featured lifestyle center contains shopping, lodging, dining and retail options in an open-air setting full of natural elements. This work helps explain the affinity of consumers to lifestyle centers and shows marketing researchers and practitioners how to use neuroscience hardware and software in service design research. Design/methodology/approach The study draws on social impact theory to show how the social presence of others in a lifestyle center influences six different cognitive responses. The authors evaluate consumers’ cognitive responses by using the Emotiv EPOC+ headset to obtain electroencephalogram recordings. To interpret these recordings, they use EmotivPro software, which provides readings on six emotional states, including excitement, interest, stress, engagement, attention and relaxation. Findings The data obtained from mall shoppers reveal that the presence of other people in a lifestyle center evokes high levels of interest and excitement and encourages relaxation. Research limitations/implications The paper shows marketers how to use neural data to obtain insights into consumers’ cognitive responses to stimuli by using Emotiv headsets and software. Practical implications The results show the importance of social elements in encouraging customers to approach and spend time in lifestyle centers. Originality/value The paper is one of the first to explore consumers’ responses to strangers in shared settings using neuroscience.
