Purpose: substantiation and working out of program for health improvement of first year students with muscular skeletal apparatus affections by power lifting means. Material: in experiment, which lasted one year, 24 first year students with muscular skeletal apparatus affections participated (two groups, 12 persons in each). The students’ age was 18-20 years old. Results: optimal correlation of specific and non-specific loads - 60%:40% was found. The worked out complex of exercises for training of bench press barbell technique includes the following: special warming up exercises, exercises on special simulators and exercises with weights. As general physical training it is recommended to use complex of commonly accepted exercises. Conclusions: application of the worked out program ensures formation of steady interest to physical exercises’ practicing, strengthening of health, replenishment of motor skills’ base, training of motor qualities and functional fitness. Besides, it facilitates more effective students’ social adaptation in collective.

A significant number of studies are devoted to the psychological and social adaptation of students to the educational process at university. This research contributes to the solution of the problem of first-year students’ academic performance in the framework of studying a foreign language by working with monologue speaking tasks. The study offers an analysis of the improvement of academic performance in this particular type of language activity. The study took place at Peter the Great Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia, and involved 274 first-year students enrolled in undergraduate programs. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to collect and analyse data for the study. The research included the qualitative content analysis of monologue speaking tasks. Results of the study make it possible to conclude that the use of monologue speaking tasks paired with peer interaction and peer assessment can improve first-year students’ English-speaking skills.

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la asociación entre la aptitud motriz de estudiantes universitarios de primer ingreso y su desempeño académico en los dos periodos lectivos de inicio de la carrera de Educación Física, Deporte y Recreación. Participaron 83 voluntarios (Hombres = 60, Mujeres = 23) de la Universidad Veracruzana, México. La aptitud motriz se evaluó con ocho pruebas y el rendimiento académico se midió con el promedio ponderado de dos periodos consecutivos. Los análisis de regresión múltiple mostraron que el salto sin carrera (modelo 1), y gimnasia y encestes de baloncesto (modelo 2) predicen el rendimiento académico. En conclusión, la aptitud motriz predice parcialmente el rendimiento académico en estudiantes de primer ingreso.AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the association between the motor skills of first-year university students and their academic performance in the two initial academic terms of the Physical Education, Sports and Recreation degree. Eighty-three volunteers participated (Men = 60, Women = 23) from the Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico. Motor skills were evaluated with eight tests and academic performance was measured with the weighted average of two consecutive terms. Multiple regression analyses showed that standing jumping (model 1), and gymnastics and effective basketball throws (model 2) predicted academic performance. In conclusion, motor skills partially predict academic performance in first-year students

This study aims at recognizing the level of social and psychological adaptation and its connection with the students of An-Najah National University in Nablus governorate in light of the background variables. Also, it seeks to clarify the correlational relations between social, psychological and academic adaptation and identity ranks. In order to achieve the aims of the study, a sample of (280) students from An-Najah National University is chosen. The consistency and validity of the tools of the study are verified. Results have shown their validity as it follows the correlational and descriptive methods. The following are the results of the study: 1- There are positive statistical relations between psychological and social adaptation and identity ranks of stopping, closure and dispersion. However, there isn’t any statistical relation between identity achievement and social and psychological adaptation. 2- There are statistical differences in the ranks of identity of the variable of scholastic year or place of residence or economic level. Besides, there are statistical differences in the averages of identity stopping and closure due to the variable of scholastic year. 3- There are differences in the average of stopping identity in the first year and the second, third and fourth year students in favor of the first year students. The source of the differences in the average of identity closure is between the first year students and the second and third year students in favor of the first year students. 4- There are statistical differences in the averages of achieving closure identity due to place of residence that the differences in the averages of achieving identity among camp citizens in the cities and villages in favor of camps citizens due to closing their identity between the citizens of the cities and villages in favor of the dwellers of the village. 5- There are statistical differences in the averages in the ranks of identity due to the economic level. Also, there are statistical differences among the averages of the social and psychological adaptation due to the variable of the scholastic year that they are between the first year students and the second and third year students in favor of the first year students. 6- All the hypotheses of the study are refuted except for two, namely: there are statistical differences in the rank of identity due to the variables of scholastic year and place of residence. The second is that there are statistical differences in the social and psychological adaptation due to the variable of scholastic year. In light of these results, the researcher recommends offering guidance programs highlighting ranks of the identity of students for its positive and effective impact in achieving their goals and changing their course of life by achieving their psychological, social and academic adaptation.

IntroductionMothers have increased mental illness such as anxiety and depression after the death of a child. Objectives and ApproachThe mental health of all mothers who experience the death of an infant (< 1 years old) in Manitoba, Canada between April 1, 1999, and March 31, 2011 (n = 534) is examined in the four years leading up to, and the four years following, the death of their child to determine how long increased levels of mental-health realted outcomes remain elevated after the death of an infant. Mental health-related outcomes of these mothers are compared with a matched (3:1) cohort of mothers who did not experience the death of a child (n = 1,602). ResultsCompared with mothers who did not experience the death of a child, mothers experiencing this event had higher rates of anxiety diagnoses and psychotropic prescriptions starting 6 months before the death. Elevated rates of anxiety continued for the first year and elevated rates of psychotropic prescriptions continued for six months after the death of the child. Mothers who experienced the death of a child had higher rates of depression diagnoses in the year after the death. Relative rates (RR) of depression (RR = 4.94), anxiety (RR = 2.21), and psychotropic medication use (RR = 3.18) were highest in the six months after the child’s death. Conclusion/ImplicationsElevated rates of depression, anxiety, and psychotropic medication use after the death of a child end within one year of the child’s death.

Background/Aim. Proper growth and development of adolescents in the morphological, functional and psychosocial aspects is the imperative of the educational process. The aim of this study was to determine the status and changes in the indicators of morphological characteristics, motor skills and lifestyle habits among the students of the Military High School in Belgrade. Methods. The study included 217 students aged 15 to 18 years (from the first to the fourth grade). The two measurements performed at the intervals of one year were used to determine: the body structure by means of 10 variables and motor skills by 4 variables, while life habits were determined by 25 variables. Results. The differences in the indicators of morphological characteristics were recorded in all the groups, being the highest in the first year of schooling. During the period of growing up, a reduction of fatty component in percentage values was found, as well as an increase of muscle mass. The progressive growth of motor skills in the first, second and the third grade was recorded in the manifestation of power, and endurance improved only in the first year. In terms of dietary habits, there was no difference among the groups. Conclusion. The obtained results indicate proper morphological and motor development and the formation of lifestyle habits. The data obtained will serve as a basis for health and functional prevention and upgrading in terms of improvement of the process of military education.

<p>The article is devoted to the problem of adaptation of first-year students to the conditions for mastering educational programs at the university. It is based on the results of monitoring of students of Russian higher educational institutions within the framework of the research "Change in Composition and Life Priorities of Students of Higher Educational Institutions and Their Social Stability ", executed by the Penza State University of Architecture and Construction. More than 400 students from 13 state universities in 5 federal districts of Russia took part in the monitoring.</p><p>The article features the results of monitoring of Russian students concerning their readiness for higher educational institutions. The results of the monitoring showed that the problem of adaptation of first-year students is a major issue, which still remains a subject for discussions while being the foundation of education in junior courses. The paper defines the concept of adaptation, presents the types and functions of the student's social adaptation and summarizes the conclusions of the study. Some proposals to improve the adaptation of first-year students have been developed and implemented.</p>

Medical humanities (MH) modules have been conducted for first year students at KIST Medical College, Lalitpur, Nepal for the last four years. Literature excerpts are widely used in MH programs in developed nations. In Nepal English language literature excerpts had been used previously in two modules. Problems noted were difficulty in comprehending the excerpts and relating them to the Nepalese scenario. The MH module for the 2011 intake was conducted from December 2011 to March 2012. The present study was conducted in the third week of March to obtain student perceptions about use of literature excerpts and suggestions for further improvement using a questionnaire. Literature excerpts used in the module dealt with Nepal and health-related topics. Sixty-eight of the 80 students (85%) participated in the study. The majority were male, self-financing and from urban areas. Respondents felt the excerpts introduced them to different aspects of the medical profession, prepared them for future practice, and underscored the importance of understanding the patients’ feelings. The literature excerpts with which they could identify the most and the least were noted. There were no differences in median enjoyment and effectiveness scores of the literature excerpts according to subgroups of respondents. The suggested benefits of using literature in medical education were similar to those reported previously. Most respondents were able to appreciate the English language excerpts. They felt that Nepali language excerpts and those by Nepali writers could also be included. The findings would be of interest to educators in other developing nations introducing MH modules.
