In this work the suitability of several plant species for phytoremediation under natural and artificially installed conditions was studied. Brassica napus, Medicago sativa, Zea mays, Triticum aestivum, and Hordeum vulgare were grown in pots with sewage sludge from Sindos Main WWTP in Thessaloniki and from Sindos Industrial WWTP in Thessaloniki, Greece. The first series of experiments included comparing measurements of various parameters for the above mentioned plants and the sludge to those for control samples (the same plants growing in compost). It was shown that shoot growth was less reduced in T. aestivum and H. vulgare than in the other plant species studied. B. napus had lower germination tax, followed by M. sativa with the lowest germination tax. Generally B. napus, giving less biomass production than Z. mays and T. aestivum, is characterised by a higher ability to accumulate heavy metals like Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cr, As and Hg. The second series of experiments included comparing measurements of various parameters of B. napus grown in sludge and treated each 7 days with metal solutions of Ni, Zn and Pb containing 10-2mg/l, 10-4mg/l, 10-6mg/l of each metal, to those for control plants treated with double distilled water. Results showed that shoot growth of B. napus were increased at treatments with lower concentrations of metals (10-6 mg/l) and control (treatment with d-distilled water). At the same time uptake of metal ions was increased with the concentration of the solution, i.e. at higher concentrations (10-2 mg/l). It is truly for Pb and Zn, transfer coefficient TC of which (indicates a plant’s potential to concentrate a metal) was quite high 15 % and 7 % correspondingly. It was noticed that B. napus has high ability to accumulate Cr, from the other hand it did not accumulate Ni (at present case).

The use of sewage sludge in agriculture and recovery of degraded areas has been shown as a promising alternative for its final destination. Studies on micronutrient levels after sludge application are necessary to avoid soil contamination at toxic levels. The objective of this work was to verify the micronutrient contents in the soil profile and pH, up to one-meter-deep, nine years after the application of sewage sludge and planting of native species of the Atlantic Forest. The experiment was implemented in a degraded Quartzeneic Neosol and conducted in randomized blocks with four replicates and eight treatments, consisting of six doses of sewage sludge (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 Mg ha-1, with supplementation of potassium due to low concentration in the residue), besides the control treatment, mineral fertilization and only potassium supplementation. After nine years, the contents of all micronutrients evaluated presented a significant response to the application of the treatments, and the application of sewage sludge provided an increase in their contents. Soil pH remained stable at sites receiving mineral fertilization and potassium supplementation. Only manganese and zinc showed mobility in the soil profile. The application of sewage sludge in degraded soil increases the micronutrient content and decreases its movement in the soil profile, and the application of the maximum dose of the residue does not provide toxic levels of these elements in the soil in the long term.

Trumpetcreeper, a deciduous, perennial vine found in the midwestern and southeastern United States, causes crop losses through direct competition and by crop entanglement, and control measures include both herbicides and tillage. The regenerative capacity of trumpetcreeper rootstocks of varying length and diameter when planted at different depths was evaluated in greenhouse experiments in Arkansas. Deeper placement of rootstocks delayed trumpetcreeper emergence but had no effect on shoot growth after emergence. Larger rootstock segments produced more shoots per plant and more total biomass production. However, smaller rootstock segments produced more shoots and total biomass per centimeter of rootstock. Overall, decreasing trumpetcreeper rootstock size will delay shoot emergence but may not result in increased long-term control.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the mortality of Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae) submitted to different extracts with different concentrations of leaves of the native forest species: Tetragastris altissima (Aubl.) Swart (Burseraceae), Metrodorea flavida K. Krause (Rutaceae) and Cheiloclinium cognatum (Miers) AC Sm (Celastraceae) under laboratory conditions. Adults of Aphis craccivora were collected in Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Kunthe Walp. (Fabaceae), and separated into groups of ten individuals, transferred to Petri dishes and exposed to topical application of aqueous, alcoholic and leaf infusion extracts of Cheiloclinium cognatum, Metrodorea flavida and Tetragastris altissima. The extracts were applied at concentrations of: 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15%, with 1% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), using a control treatment 1 (distilled water + DMSO 1%) and control treatment 2 (fipronil). Evaluations were performed at 24, 48 and 72 hours after the application of the extracts by counting the dead insects. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five replicates, three types of extracts and five concentrations with controls. In all the studied species, the aqueous and infusion extracts presented a lower mortality (less than 52%), whereas the alcoholic extract in higher concentrations of Cheiloclinium cognatum, Metrodorea flavida showed a mortality of up to 100%. The species Tetragastris altissima reached an average mortality of 92%. The lethal concentration for the alcoholic extract of Cheiloclinium cognatum was LC50 6.43% and LC90 12.22%, Metrodorea flavida LC50 was 3.08% and LC90 7.05% and that for Tetragastris altissima LC50 5.58% and LC90 17.47%, after 72 hours. The use of the alcoholic extract of the species Metrodorea flavida at a concentration of 9% in the control of Aphis craccivora is indicated.

Different fertilisation systems cause changes in the content of mobile aluminium (Al) forms in the soil as a result of soil pH changes. Long-term stationary fertilisation experiments established in 1996 at 2 sites were evaluated. Experiments consisted of unfertilised control treatment and 6 other treatments, combining mineral fertilisation with the application of farmyard manure, sewage sludge and straw. To record the changes in mobile Al forms, we used 5 extraction procedures with agents: water, CaCl<sub>2</sub>, KCl, CaCl<sub>2</sub>/DTPA (CAT) and Mehlich 3 solutions. At treatment nitrogen (N) + straw, topsoil acidification was observed, resulting in the increased content of mobile Al. At treatments with mineral fertilisation (N, NPK), increased content of mobile forms of Al was recorded. Application of cattle manure and sewage sludge helped to stabilise the soil pH and reduce mobile Al forms. The close correlation between the methods determining the exchangeable Al (CaCl<sub>2</sub> and KCl solutions) was observed; however, KCl extraction was more favourable in soils of low Al extractability, as the amount of extracted Al was 3–4 times higher. Positive correlations were determined between Al extracted by Mehlich 3 solution and the content of exchangeable Al. The less frequently used CAT method also turned out to be perspective for mobile Al determination. Furthermore, aluminium content determined in Mehlich 3 extract was compared with mobile phosphorus amounts in H<sub>2</sub>O, CAT and Mehlich 3, respectively. All three investigated phosphorus forms showed significantly negative correlations with Al.

The influences of long-term flooding and <I>Phytophthora alni</I> subsp. <I>alni</I> infection on the growth and development of 4-year-old <I>Alnus glutinosa</I> (black alder) saplings were investigated. The black alder saplings were divided into four groups and then subjected to combinations of both factors – flooded and inoculated with pathogen, flooded non-inoculated, non-flooded inoculated, and control. The biomass of the living roots and actinorrhizae, increase in stem length, length of leaves, rate of chlorotic foliage, amount of foliage biomass and length of stem necrosis were assessed after seven weeks. Both factors, flooding and <I>P. alni</I> infection significantly affected the black alder. In addition, a significant effect of interaction was observed. The inoculated flooded group had a substantially lower biomass weight of living roots, actinorrhiza and leaves than the other groups. The necroses caused by the pathogen in the flooded group were more extensive than those in the non-flooded one. These findings demonstrate that the simultaneous incidence of stress caused by flooding and <I>P. alni</I> infection is highly dangerous for black alder.

Abstract Variation in the assays of uniform control serum commonly are assumed to represent day-to-day analytical variation. To test this assumption, we compared the differences between results of serum aliquots assayed immediately for 12 constituents and frozen aliquots accumulated and assayed on a single day with the results of control serum variation from the same period. One aliquot of each weekly sample was stored frozen. Eleven subjects were sampled for 12 weeks. Storage at --20 degrees C for 15 weeks had a mild destructive effect on two enzymes in serum. The control serum data revealed significant linear trends in magnesium (upwards) and alkaline phosphatase (downwards) that substantially increased the respective variances. In the other 10 constituents tested, comparison of variances indicated that long-term (weeks) variation in control serum assays is similar to the difference of variation between aliquots assayed immediately and those frozen and assayed at the same time. For these constituents, this finding justifies the use of control serum to estimate long term analytical variation.

Previous attempts to infect peripheral lymph nodes (PLNs) with Salmonella via oral inoculation have been inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a series of experiments to determine whether multiple exposures to an oral challenge would result in Salmonella-positive PLN in cattle. In each of three experiments, calves were inoculated with Salmonella Montevideo. In the first experiment, calves were challenged with either no Salmonella (control), a single oral dose (~1010; PCON), or 10 consecutive doses in water (~103; WAT). The positive control treatment resulted in an increase (P &lt; 0.05) in the percentage of Salmonella-positive PLNs, compared with the WAT-treated and control animals. Experiments 2 and 3 were designed to additionally determine if the stress associated with feed and water deprivation influences the systemic spread of Salmonella from the gastrointestinal tract to PLNs. Following 14 days of oral inoculation (average 7.1 × 104 CFU/day) in experiment 1, Salmonella was recovered from one subiliac and one superficial cervical lymph node of calves that were deprived of feed and water (72 h). No treatment differences (P &gt; 0.05) were observed between control and deprived calves. Based on the poor recovery of Salmonella from the PLNs in WAT-challenged calves in experiments 1 and 2, a higher challenge dose (average 1.2 × 107 CFU) was used in experiment 3. The increased dose resulted in the recovery of the challenge strain of Salmonella from the PLNs (70.8 and 75.0% of control and deprived calves, respectively). However, no treatment differences (P &gt; 0.05) were observed between control and deprived calves. Results of this research demonstrated that a substantial oral challenge is required to produce Salmonella-positive PLNs. However, as the challenge periods examined herein were considerably shorter compared with the normal time spent by cattle in feedlots, increased exposure time to lower doses may produce the same effect observed in experiment 3.

An experiment carried out under laboratory conditions addressed the influence exerted by the odour of a stoat, Mustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758, on the feeding behaviour of a root vole, Microtus oeconomus Pallas, 1776. Specifically, the impact of the odour on the chewing of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) shoots and consumption of food pellets by voles that were not sexually active was observed over a 14-day period. The floors of cages with individuals from the experimental group were sprinkled daily with a distilled-water rinse from a glass clamber in which a stoat had been confined, while cages holding control individuals were sprinkled with distilled water only. The uptake of food was monitored daily by checking the degree to which shoots had been chewed, as well as the amount of food pellets consumed. Stoat odour caused a significant reduction in chewing of the shoots but did not affect the amount of food pellets eaten. There was no significant influence of the scent on body mass, which suggests that the assimilation of food was probably the same for voles in the experimental and control groups. Long-term exposure to stoat scent was not associated with changes in food consumption over time, which suggests that the voles had not become habituated to the presence of the odour over the 2-week period. It would therefore seem that the stoat scent affected the specific feeding behaviour of the voles rather than their overall consumption level.

ABSTRACT Fifteen Friesian oxen between 12 and 18 months of age with a mean body mass of 240.7 kg were randomly assigned to diets containing 0.25 % phosphorus (P) or less, to evaluate the acute effects of an acidiogenic diet of -11.1 meq/100 g of diet dry matter, compared with a basiogenic diet of +25.6 meq/100 g or a control diet of +16.5 meq/100 g of diet dry matter calculated as (Na + K) - (Cl + S), on blood, bone and faecal P, calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) for a period of 9 weeks. Blood, bone and faecal responses to an anionic diet are described. An inverse relationship existed between bone and blood Ca, in which there was resorption from bone with increased blood Ca in response to the anionic diet. The anionic treatment group demonstrated simultaneous increases in bone, blood and faecal P concentrations at various stages of the experiment compared to the cationic and control treatment groups. Results indicate independent absorption and resorption of Ca and P into and out of bone. There was wide variation in the bone Ca:P ratio between 2.02 and 1.51 among animals fed the anionic diet, with the Ca:P ratio following Ca values and not bone P values. Bone and blood P had a linear relationship with dietary cation:anion balance (DCAB), increasing as the diet became more anionic in nature, but faecal P was curvilinear with highest concentrations at -11.1 and +25.6 meq/100 g compared to +16.5 meq/100 g. Concurrent blood, bone and faecal P increases at some stages of the experiment indicate a P-sparing effect of the anionic diet and warrants further research into the long-term effects of anions in the diet, leading to their use as a possible addition to improved licks in P-deficient areas.

AbstractThe presence of biofertilizers can affect the life and movement of subterranean organisms in the soil. In the current study, the effect of three biofertilizers (Unigrow, Rhizogold and Rhizogold Plus) alone and in combination with diatomaceous earth (DE) and insecticides on mortality and movement of subterranean termites, Coptotermes heimi (Wasmann), was investigated under laboratory conditions. The mortality of termites in soil mixed with biofertilizers was low as compared to the control treatment, which led to significant mortality. Length of galleries formed by termites with the addition of Unigrow in the soil was significantly higher as compared to the other two biofertilizers and control treatments. Mortality increased in the presence of insecticides and DE in the soil substrate. Unigrow mixed soil having chlorfenapyr had maximum mortality and minimum gallery length followed by Rhizogold and Rhizogold Plus. The addition of DE and insecticide further enhances mortality, and we recommend that some toxic elements should be incorporated in biofertilizers to control subterranean termites.
