The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery as the independent variable and speaking ability as the dependent variable. The sample of this study were 38 students of eighth-grade students of SMPN 4 Gaung Anak Serka. The research method used in this study was a correlation study. The researcher gave tests of vocabulary and speaking ability to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of students' vocabulary mastery is 42.7, it was in the very low category, and the average of students' speaking ability was 36.5, also in the very low category, it was in the range 00 – 49. Based on those findings, the researcher analyzed the relationship between the students' vocabulary mastery and speaking ability using the Pearson Product Moment formula, the results was 0.339 it was classified as low correlation. Then to test the hypothesis, the researcher compared the values of rxy = 0.339 and rtable = 0.2709 (5%) and 0.3202 (1%). In short, 0.2709 < 0.3393 > 0.3202. Meanwhile, the SPSS result has also proven that the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.037, which was less than 0.05. Dealing with the results, it could be determined that Ho (null hypothesis) was rejected, and H1 (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. It means that there is a positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability. If students have good vocabulary so that they will have a good speaking ability.

Wukirsari? Second, what was the percentage of Students’ Learning Strategy? The objectives of this study were to find out the percentages of students’ learning strategy and to find out the correlation between students’ learning strategy and students’ English achievement to the eighth-grade students of SMPN H. Wukirsai. The method used in this study was correlation research. The population of this study was all of the eighth-grade students of SMPN H. Wukirsari in the academic year 2015/2016. The total number of population was 182 students which were distributed into six classes. There were 28 students treated as the sample of the study. The sample was taken through random sampling. In collecting the data of students’ learning strategy, the writer used questionnaire by strategy inventory for language learning and in collecting the data of students’ English achievement, the writer used students’ report score. Then, the technique for analyzing the data, the writer used Spearman Rank Correlation to find out the correlation between students’ learning strategy and students’ English achievement. Based on the findings, the result of the calculation correlation between students’ learning strategy and students’ English achievement was 0.542, whereas the coefficient of correlation was 0.318 (obtained > table ). So the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, it means that there was a correlation between students’ learning strategy and students’ English achievement to the eighth-grade students of SMPN H. We explore the effects of a statewide policy change that increased the number of high school math courses required for admission to four-year public universities in North Carolina. Using data on cohorts of eighth-grade students from 1999 to 2006, we exploit variation by district over time in the math course-taking environment encountered by students. Purely as a result of a student's year of birth and location, students faced different probabilities of encountering a sequence of math courses sufficient to qualify for admission. Within an instrumental variables setup, we examine effects of this policy shift. We find that students took more math courses in high school following the state's announcement, with relatively larger increases for students in the middle and bottom quintiles of their eighth-grade math test scores. Our results suggest this increased math course-taking led to higher high school graduation rates. It also led to increases in enrollment rates at universities in the University of North Carolina system, with the largest increases being in the quintiles of student achievement from which universities were already drawing the bulk of their enrollees. Finally, we find scant evidence of boosts in post-enrollment college performance due to increased math course-taking in high school.

This research was motivated by the problems experienced by some of the eighth grade students in SMPN 1 Palu. The students still had some difficulties when expressing their ideas or feelings by using English. They had various reasons for this. Most of them said that grammar is one of the causes of their difficulties in speaking English. This research was a correlational design, the technique of collecting data using test. There were two kinds of test such as written test and oral test as the research instrument. The written test was used to measure students’ grammar competency and oral test was used to measure students’ speaking ability. The researcher used Pearson Product Moment Correlation in analyzing the data by using SPSS program 26 version. Based on the results of the correlation analysis between the students’ grammar competency and the students speaking ability, the r value was obtained at 0.407 (r > 0.361) with p = 0.023 (p <0.05) indicating that there was a significant positive correlation between students’ grammar competency and students’ speaking ability. This supported the alternative hypothesis to be accepted and the null hypothesis to be rejected. It could be concluded that there was a correlation between grammar competency and speaking ability at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Palu in the academic year of 2020/2021.

The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe the implementation of STAR (Select, Teach, Activate and Revisit) strategy of the eighth grade students of MTs N 1 Bangka, and (2) to find out whether there was any significant difference in vocabulary mastery between the students who were taught by using STAR strategy and the students who were taught without STAR strategy. This study was focused on vocabulary mastery. The total number of sample was 64 students. In this study, the researcher used experimental research method with a quasi-experimental design. The result showed that the students’ vocabulary mastery significantly increased. It could be seen from the pre-test and post-test mean score. Furthermore, the result of independent sample t-test of students’ post-test between experimental group and control group showed that the t-obtained was higher than t-table (2.547 > 2.00) and the p-output was lower than computation with level significant 0.05 (0.014 < 0.05). It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that STAR strategy was effective to increase students’ vocabulary mastery.

This research investigates Genre-based Approach in improving the students’ writing narrative text. The aims of this study were to to find out the effects of the Genre-based Approach in teaching writing narrative text. In collecting data, the writer used instrument; it is writing text (pre-test and post-test). The population of the research was the eighth grade students’ of Junior High School Karangtengah Garut. The writer used a proportional random sampling, so there were 34 students as the sample (25%) of the population: 15 males and 19 females. This research a used quantitative method and the pre-experimantal design. Two variables in this research: the independent variable research was using Genre-based Approach in teaching narrative text, and dependent variable was using narrative text in improving the writing skill. The result of the research showed that tobserved was 13.96 and tcritical was 2.0423. The criteria of test; Ho was accepted if - tcritical ≤ tobserved ≤ tcritical so that it was concluded that null hypothesis (HO) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted because the score was – 2.0423 ≤ 13.96 ≥ 2.0423; therefore, there was a significant effect of using Genre-based Approach in teaching writing narrative text and 76% of students writing narrative text using Genre-based Approach was improved
