Fone: (35) 3829 1362. OLIVEIRA, P. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation levels on the root system of drip-irrigated coffee plants in western Bahia State (BA), Brazil. The experiment was carried out on Café do Rio Branco farm, located in Barreiras - BA, using adult plants (approximately 3.5 years old) of coffee variety Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144. The experiment was set up as a randomized block design with three treatments corresponding to the irrigation depths of 75, 100 and 150% as determined using Irriplus software. After the fourth harvest, the coffee root system was assessed to determine root length density (RLD) and root weight density (RWD) in different sampled layers. A greater concentration of roots (RLD and RWD) was observed in the surface layer (0-20 cm) and under the lateral line (at 30 and 70 cm from the orthotropic branch). The irrigation depth of 75% provided the highest concentration of roots (RLD and RWD) in the 0-10 cm layer.   Keywords: Drip irrigation, Coffea arabica L, root system.

SALES, M. S.ASSESSMENT OF WATER AVAILABILITY AT BOI BRANCO WATERSHED   THROUGH CLIMATIC WATER BALANCE AND GROWING  2 ABSTRACT One way to calculate the amount of water in a determined system is by means of the water balance, an important tool for the assessment of the water cycle in a specific region. The main goal of this work was to establish the water balance in the watershed Boi Branco-SP, so that it can be used as a tool for the hydro-agricultural and environmental planning of the region. For the climatic water balance, data of the historical series of the region (1971 - 1995) were used. Evapotranspiration data were estimated by the Thornthwaite method. The climatic water balance showed  total annual water deficit  of 10.1 mm, and surplus of 319.7 mm, with January presenting surplus  of  92.6 in the average monthly precipitation; given that the effective monthly precipitation presenting probability of 75%,  water deficit  in the soil  is 238.8 mm and surplus is 56.8 mm. When these data are added to the ones of the crop, as a crop coefficient and soil humidity depletion factor, it is observed that all crops studied showed water deficit  in all the months covered. Keyword: Water agricultural planning, water capability available in the soil, evapotranspiration.

COSTA, V.M.; FOLEGATTI, M.V.; ATARASSI, R.T.; DUARTE, S.N.; DIAS, N.S.; SILVA, C.R. DEVELOPMENT OF COFFEE SEEDLINGS PRODUCED IN PLASTIC TUBESUNDER TERMO-REFLECTIVE AND BLACK SCREENS   2 ABSTRACT This experiment evaluated, in greenhouse conditions, the development of coffee seedlings produced in plastic tubes, under the effect of screens used for shading. The treatments were the traditional black screen 50% and the thermo reflective screens with attenuation of the solar radiation of 40, 50, 60 and 70%. The adopted experimental delineation was randomized blocks with 5 treatments and 4 replicates, making up 20 parcels. The result showed that the temperature of air gently varied in the parcels, as well as the air relative humidity.  Relating to global transmissivity (TRG) and photosynthetically active transmissivity (TRFA), it was verified that screens with less attenuation of the solar radiation presented higher transmissivity in general. The leaf area did not present significant difference among the treatments and seedlings height and stalk diameter, the seedlings produced under thermo-reflective screens 40% and 50% were superior to those produced under black screen 50% and thermo-reflective screen 60% and 70%. In the evaluations of dry matter, the seedlings produced under thermo-reflective screens 40% and 50%, and black screen 50% comparatively accumulated more dry matter than those produced under thermo-reflective screens 60% and 70%. Thus, it can be concluded that the thermo-reflective screens 40% and 50% and black screen 50% presented better results than the thermo-reflective screens 60% and 70%. Keywords: Coffea arábica L., shading, greenhouse.

Young coffee plants from cultivar Mundo Novo of Coffea arabica were grown without irrigation for 32 consecutive days, to evaluate the effect of leaf water potential on damage caused by low temperatures, under controlled conditions. A wide range of leaf water potentials were evaluated, from - 0.45MPa (wet soil) at the beginning of the experimental period, to - 4.8MPa (severe leaf wilting) at the end. Results showed that under moderate water stress, there was a higher frequency of undamaged plants and lower frequency of severely damaged plants. These results help explain part of the regional variability observed after a frost and stress the importance of new studies associating cold and drought tolerance in coffee.

The field study was conducted on Lysimeter by employing the soil water balance method to compute the water requirement and Crop coefficient of Maize in the temperate climatic zone of India. Non-weighing type lysimeters (drainage type) of 2 × 1.5 × 2 m was installed to compute the irrigation requirement, actual crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and actual crop coefficient of maize by water balance method. The water requirement of maize was found 410.4 mm using lysimeter data. The mean daily reference evapotranspiration (ETo) of maize ranged from 0.91 mm/day in the starting growth period to 5.29 mm/day at midseason. The peak ETo of Maize was found 6.3mm/day. The computed crop coefficient (Kc) values of Maize for diffrent crop growth stages were 0.53 for intial, 0.93 for development , 1.05 for mid-season, and 0.78 for late season .A Correlation was also established between Penman-Monteith (P-M) and four other reference Evapotranspiration methods.

Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a xylem-limited bacterium that is the causal agent of coffee leaf scorch (CLS) in Central America. The purpose of this research was to survey potential vectors of Xf in plantings of coffee, Coffea arabica L., in Puerto Rico. These surveys were conducted from June to November 2006 on four farms, located in the municipalities of Yauco, Juana Díaz and Adjuntas. Insects were collected at each site at 15-day intervals. The 7,423 individuals collected belonged to five families and 12 species. Cicadellidae was the primary family in both number of species and number of individuals. Indexes of dominance, abundance, frequency and constancy showed Agallia pulchra, Apogonalia imitatrix, Caribovia coffeacola and Hortensia similis to be the predominant species. Indexes also showed significant differences among locations, with higher diversity and equitability on Yauco farms, and higher dominance in Adjuntas. Of the four dominant species, Apogonalia imitatrix, C. coffeacola and H. similis are all xylem fluid feeders, and thus may be potential vectors of Xf. Apogonalia imitatrix represents the first report of the species for Puerto Rico.

ABSTRACT: This research evaluated the effects of coffee cultivation with two different water regimes associated or not with liming and the presence/absence of brachiaria as intercrop on the activities of the soil enzymes β-glucosidase, arylsulfatase and acid phosphatase. The study was carried out at the experimental farm of Embrapa Cerrados, using the cultivar IAC 144 (Coffea arabica L.), under a clayey dystrophic Cerrado Oxisol. Two water regimes (WR) were considered, WR1 with irrigation shifts throughout the year and WR3 with controlled water stress, for about 70 days, in the dry season. In each water regime, effects of lime application (with/without) and the presence/absence of brachiaria cultivated between the lines of coffee plants were evaluated. The activities of the enzymes β-glucosidase, arylsulfatase and acid phosphatase were evaluated during the rainy and dry seasons. Liming and intercropped brachiaria positively affected the activities of the three enzymes assessed in this study at varying degrees, depending on season and/or the WR. Our findings evidenced that intercropped brachiaria in coffee rows was the factor that most positively impacted soil enzymes activities.

The total of three consecutive years of fruit production was evaluated in six coffee cultivars (<em>Coffea arabica L</em>.) propagated by seed and grafted onto Robusta (<em>Coffea canephora</em> var. Robusta). The plantations were established at 640 m, 920 m, and 1340 m altitude in the central region of the Veracruz State, Mexico. The <em>coffea</em> plants were established in soils naturally infested with nematodes. Grafted plants had higher production than those propagated by seed. Fruit production was higher at 640 m and 920 m than at 1340 m for the two types of propagation. The cultivars Colombia Brote Café and Colombia Brote Verde had the highest fruit yield regardless of the propagation methods; in contrast, Pacamara, had the lowest. The grafted coffee plants that were planted at 1340 m had a yield reduction of 27% in comparison with those at 640 and 920 m. When the Costa Rica 95 variety was grafted, it achieved fruit yield similar to Colombia Brote Verde and Colombia Brote Café. Pacamara produced almost 28% more fruit when it was grafted onto Robusta.
