Response of tritordeum, ‘Bulel’ variety, on organic and inorganic fertilization was observed through a field experiment in Greece. So as to evaluate, a field experiment was set up in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) where blocks were four fertilizations (control, inorganic, manure, compost). Plant height was affected by fertilization. Thus height was ranged from 65 cm (control) to 71.75 cm (NPK). Concerning, kernel weight, control and the two organic fertilized did not differ. Both protein and gluten has a positive response to inorganic fertilization, values were 16.27 % and 33.45 % respectively. The increase in gluten is not a desirable trait as tritordeum is cultivated for lower gluten levels than wheat. Yield rised with fertilizers with the highest value of 4753.5 kg ha-1. In brief, as first results, there was a positive response of tritordeum to fertilization in the dry conditions of Greece. As far as ‘Bulel’ variety recently became commercial, consequently a few years to further investigate are needed.

Four advanced tritordeum lines were studied and compared to two commercial varieties of tritordeum and wheat cultivars in yield and quality features, in Greece. For this purpose, a two-year experiment was established in the Greek territory. The field experiment was set up in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with blocks, with different lines and varieties. Head emergence was calculated based on Growing Degree Days (GDDs), which was significantly affected by the year. The significance of differences between treatments was estimated by using Fisher’s least significant difference (LSD) test with significance level p = 0.05. The weight of 1000 seeds of the two commercial varieties differed from the equivalent weight of 1000 seeds of tritordeum lines, approximately 1 g. Yield was significantly affected by lines/varieties and year. Compared to tritordeum yield, wheat yield marked the highest values. This difference was almost 2 kg ha−1. Gluten content was significantly affected by lines/varieties. The highest gluten content was firstly noticed at wheat GENESIS (34.2%) variety and secondly at tritordeum Aucan (33.2%) variety. Protein was higher in tritordeum lines HT-1704 (15.5%), HT-1707 (15.1%) and Aucan variety (15.2%) during the first experimental year. Tritordeum seems to have significant adaptability to dry conditions in Greece and significant yields compared to the existing commercial varieties and bread wheat.

Abstract The effect of chemicals (Reglone 200 SL and Elastiq 550 EC) on soil microorganisms and their enzymatic activity was estimated. The study was conducted in a field experiment which was set up in the split-block design and comprised three treatments. Soil samples were taken six times, twice in each year of study. The results showed that the application of chemicals generally had no negative effect on the number of soil microorganisms. The application of Reglone 200 SL caused an increase of proteolytic and ureolytic activity and affected the activity of dehydrogenases, acid and alkaline phosphatases in the soil. The soil subjected of Elastiq 550 EC was characterized by lower activity of dehydrogenases, protease, urease and alkaline phosphatase.

Durum wheat has a comparative adaptive advantage over bread wheat under hot and dry conditions. Accordingly, it feeds millions of people in the Middle East and North Africa. Under these conditions, the deficiency of nutrients, including micronutrients, is a major concern for many reasons, including calcareous soil under drought stress conditions. Therefore, growth, yield, iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) concentration in durum wheat cultivar grains were investigated. A factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted in the Dryland Agricultural Research Institute (DARI) - Moghan. The first factor comprised spraying at four levels, including the control and foliar spraying with Fe, Zn, and Fe+Zn and the second factor consisted of genotypes at four levels: Dehdasht (G1), Seymareh (G2), and two new genotypes (G3 and G4). Solutions of Fe and Zn fertilizers were sprayed at the tillering, early ear emergence, and milk stages, with a ratio of 2 and 1.5 g fertilizer/1000 ml solution (W/V), respectively. The results showed that genotypes G1, G3 and G4 produced higher grain yield per square meter than G2. This increase was due to the higher weight of 1000 grains in G3 and G4 genotypes and 1000-grain weight with a higher grain number in G1. G1 and G2 had greater spike length, number of grains per spike and spikelet than G3 and G4 genotypes. In all studied traits, except Fe and Zn concentration, the combination of Fe+Zn showed the highest and control had the lowest performance. Also, the application of Zn was superior to Fe. The highest Fe concentration of G1, G2, G3, and G4 was observed at Fe+Zn, control, Zn, and Fe levels, respectively. The highest Zn concentrations were observed in the G3 genotype when only Zn was used or in combination with Fe. According to the results, the Fe and Zn spray application increased durum wheat yield on Fe and Zn deficient soil.

The lower productivity and higher yield gaps in major cereals are the dominant problems of agriculture in eastern-terai of Nepal. Hence, field experiment was conducted to evaluate Nutrient Expert® wheat and maize model on farmer’s field at two sites each for maize and wheat in Morang and Jhapa district. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Completely Block Design replicated among twenty farmers in each district. Two treatments executed were NE (Nutrient Expert Recommendation) and FFP (Farmer Fertilizer Practices).The result revealed significant difference in terms of morphology, yield attributes and yield of wheat and maize. The highest wheat yield (4.71 ton ha-1) was obtained from NE followed by FFP (3.00 ton ha-1) in Jhapa and in Morang, was (4.01 ton ha-1) in NE followed by (2.05 ton ha-1) in FFP. In contrary, the higher maize yield (9.22 ton ha-1) was obtained from NE followed by FFP (4.94 ton ha-1) in Jhapa and (8.059 t ha-1)in Morang NE followed by FFP (4.52 ton ha-1). The net revenue of NE wheat in Morang was found to be increased by 344.799% while in maize the increment in net revenue of NE was only by 131.158% in Jhapa than in Morang. The experiment was set up on two types of the soil: Mollic Gleysols (FAO, 1998) and Eutric Cambisols where the presence of pathogenic fungi – sugar beet root decay agent – Rhizoctonia solani has been detected since 2005. In a two year study (2008, 2009), the experiment was set up by completely randomized block design in 4 repetitions and 16 different variants. Two beet varieties, Belinda, sensitive to pathogenic fungi R. solani, and Laetitia, tolerant to pathogenic fungi R. solani), were grown. The microbiological preparation BactoFil was applied in different amounts in autumn and spring. In addition, the nitrogen fertilizer application, based on the results of soil analysis, was varied. The following parameters were tested: amount of infected and decayed plants, root yield, sugar content, sugar in molasses and sugar yield. The best results were obtained by applying the microbiological preparation BactoFil, and by 30% reduced nitrogen fertilizer application. Preparation dosage and time of application depended on soil properties.

Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is a valuable food security crop in West Africa, where 92% of the world production occurs. The availability of quality seed tubers for increased productivity is a major challenge. In this study, minitubers weighing 1, 3, and 5 g produced from virus-free single-node vine cuttings of two improved yam varieties (Asiedu and Kpamyo) growing in an aeroponics system were assessed for suitability in seed production at a population of 100,000 plants ha−1. A 3 × 2 factorial experiment with randomized complete block design and three replications was set up during the cropping seasons of 2017 to 2019 at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Research Station in Kubwa, Abuja, Nigeria. Results showed field establishments of 87%–97.8%. Yields differed with minituber size, variety, and cropping season; the highest was 31.2 t ha−1 in 2019 and the lowest, 10 t ha−1 in 2018 from 5 and 1 g Kpamyo minitubers, respectively. The estimated number of tubers produced per hectare by 1, 3, and 5 g minitubers was 101,296, 112,592, and 130,555, with mean weights per stand of 159.2, 187.3, and 249.4 g, respectively. We recommend using less than 6 g minitubers for seed yam production due to their high multiplication rates.

AbstractMinimally invasive surgery in some cases suffers from a limited view because certain areas are obscured by others. In this paper, a system is described, which can be used in minimally invasive procedures as an addition to a standard endoscope to improve the range of view. Through FEM simulation a magnetic circuit was designed to position the camera head. Subsequently, a camera positioning system was set up that includes an extracorporeal and an intracorporeal unit. The first controls the intracorporeal system. The latter has a camera inclination angle of up to 65° and an additional vertically downward viewing angle when aligned in parallel (inclination angle 0°). The panning angle is 360°. The camera system was evaluated in lab and cadaver trials. It has been found that the size of the intracorporeal system (16 × 10 × 150 mm) represents a major problem. Future work will focus of the reduction of the system’s size, the improvement of the camera image quality, and design changes considering mechanical stability.

Experiments to study the effect of grain number per sq metre on kernel weight and grain yield in a high-yielding dwarf spring wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Yecora 70) were conducted in three seasons (1971–1973) under high-fertility irrigated conditions in north-western Mexico. Crop thinning, shading and carbon dioxide fertilization (reported elsewhere), and crowding treatments, all carried out at or before anthesis, led to a wide range in grain numbers (4000 to 34,000/m2). Results indicated the response of grain yield to changing sink size (grains per sq metre), with the post-anthesis environment identical for all crops each year, and with all but the thinner crops intercepting most of the post-anthesis solar radiation. Kernel weight fell linearly with increase in grain number over the whole range of grain numbers studied, but the rate of fall varied with the season. Grain yield, however, increased, reaching a maximum at grain numbers well above those of crops grown with optimal agronomic management but without manipulation. It was concluded that the grain yield in normal crops was limited by both sink and post-anthesis source. There was some doubt, however, as to the interpretation of results from crowded crops, because of likely artificial increases in crop respiration on the one hand, and on the other, in labile carbohydrate reserves in the crops at anthesis. Also deterioration in grain plumpness (hectolitre weight) complicates the simple inference that further gains in yield can come from increased grain numbers alone.

An important aspect in the cultivation of vegetables is the quality of the product to be marketed, free from dirt and damage and the practice of mulching could be an option, but there is scarse information. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of mulching on the production traits of three cultivars of Pak Choi. The experiment was set up during March to May 2013 using a split plot randomized block design, with four replications. Soil cover treatments (white agrotextile, black agrotextile, black plastic, silver plastic, tifton straw and bare soil) were arranged in the plots, and three cultivars of Pak Choi (Green Pak Choi, White Pak Choi and Chingensai Natsu Shomi) in subplots. Height and diameter of shoots, number of leaves, fresh weight of the head and petiole, base diameter, dry weight of stem, petiole, and leaf were evaluated thirty-five days after transplantation. The total dry weight and leaf area were measured, and then we estimated the yield. There was a significant effect of soil cover and cultivar. In general, the cover with synthetic materials showed higher values on production of Pak Choi. The cultivar White Pak Choi was better adapted to the growing conditions, with an average yield of 57.78 t/ha.
