ABSTRACT The season of harvest is one of the most important factors influencing seed quality. This study evaluated the effect of different harvesting times on the physiological quality of Coriandrum sativum L. seeds, cv. Palmeira. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six treatments (harvest times) and four replications. The experiment was conducted during the months of April to October 2010. The first moment to harvest seeds was carried out 15 days after full bloom, when approximately 50% of plants were in flowering phase. Other harvests (22, 29, 36, 43 and, 50 days after bloom) were carried out at 7 days intervals until the seeds reached 16.0% of moisture, which occurred in the 6th harvest. Immediately after each harvest, the seeds were analysed for water content, germination and vigor (first count, seedling emergence and emergence rate index). The harvest season most suitable for C. sativum seeds cv. Palmeira occurred between 46 and 50 days after flowering, when the seeds have the highest physiological quality and moisture content between 20 and 16%.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different spray volumes, via industrial treatment, on the physiological quality of soybean seeds with different levels of vigor. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x5 factor scheme, with four replications. Factors consisted in two levels of seed vigor (high and low) and five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL. 100 kg-1). Products used to obtain the volumes were: fungicide (carbendazin + thiram); insecticide (imidacloprid + thiodicarb); nematicide (abamectin); micronutrients (cobalt, molybdenum and zinc); polymer (peridiam); biostimulants (kinetin + gibberellic acid) and inoculum (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). The used cultivars were BRS 360 RR and BRS 1010 IPRO. The physiological seed quality was determined by the following evaluations: germination, first count of the germination test, seedling emergence in sand, emergency speed index, total length of shoot and root of the seedlings. In the different spray volumes, high vigor soybean seeds have higher physiological quality than low vigor seeds. The increased spray volumes in seed treatments reduce the physiological quality of low vigor soybean seeds.

Storage is an important step in the production of soybean seeds, mainly in tropical regions, where high temperatures can drastically reduce seed quality. The storage at cooler temperatures may be a feasible alternative to preserve seed quality during storage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds artificially cooled by a dynamic process and stored in an environment, with non controlled temperature and relativity humidity. Two seed lots of cultivars Monsoy 8757, TMG 115 RR and BRS Valiosa RR were used. After processing and during packaging the seeds were cooled to 18 ºC by a dynamic process. Seed samples were collected after 0, 60 and 120 days of storage, using the following parameters germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand, speed of emergence index, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium and seed health. Although soybean seeds artificially cooled by the dynamic method may have slightly superior performance in maintaining physiological quality during storage in non-refrigerated warehouse, for lots of high physiological quality, these advantages are not observed.

ABSTRACT To obtain seeds of high physiological quality, it is of paramount importance to define the ideal harvest moment, which oftentimes corresponds to the period when the physiological maturity is reached. This experiment aimed to study the maturation process and determine the best harvest season of maroon cucumber fruits (Liso Gibão cultivar), in order to reach the maximum physiological seed quality. The flowers were labeled during the anthesis and the fruits harvested at 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56 days after the anthesis (DAA). The fruits had their visual aspects registered by photography analysis and, later, the seeds were extracted for physical (water and dry matter contents) and physiological (germination, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, accelerated aging and electrical conductivity) analyses. It was observed that the seeds reach the maximum dry mass (8.08 mg seed-1) between 47 and 49 DAA. However, the seed physiological maturity, characterized by a maximum germination (70 %) and vigor, occurs at 56 DDA. The best season to harvest seeds with a higher physiological quality takes place from 49 to 56 DDA, when the fruits present a yellowish color.

The use of methods and technologies such as drying and film coating can bring significant contributions to the farmer. This experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of drying and film coating on the physiological quality of eggplant seeds during storage. Hybrid seeds UGA MS1 produced by the company Hortiagro - Ijaci, MG were used. Seeds were subjected to two types of drying: slow (room temperature) and quick (oven with forced air circulation at 35 ºC). The chemical treatment was performed with the Captan product at a dose of 250 grams per 100 kilograms of seed and for the recoating were used three doses of polymer: (0, 3 and 6 mL.kg-1 of seeds). The physiological quality of seeds was evaluated every three months until reaching the period of nine months using germination test, seedling emergence test and seedling establishment. There is a reduction of physiological seed quality during the storage. The slow drying of eggplant seeds results in better quality seeds. The use of polymer reduces the germination percentage, germination speed index and the percentage of seedling emergence.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of white oat seeds cultivated under different topdressing N levels combined with the plant growth retardant trinexapac-ethyl in two growing environments. The experiments were carried out in Londrina and Mauá da Serra Municipalities (PR, Brazil) with the cultivar ‘IPR Afrodite’. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 4x2 factorial arrangement, with four replications. Treatments consisted of four N levels (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg.ha-1) combined or not with the plant growth retardant. Seed yield, 1000-seed weight, germination, first germination count, seedling length, seedling dry matter, accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, emergence speed index, and seedling emergence in sand were evaluated. Data were submitted to the analysis of variance and then to the F test and regression analysis up to the second degree (p≤0.05). The application of the plant growth retardant and N topdressing led to an increase in seed productivity in Mauá da Serra. N fertilization reduced seed quality, but this effect can be minimized, not observed or overlapped by the positive effect of the plant growth retardant. Such an effect depends on environmental characteristics and it was not observed in Londrina.

Mung beans (Vigna radiata L.) are of Asian origin and have gained national importance with the production of moyashi. The study aimed to evaluate the seed physiological quality of mung beans according to the row spacing and number of plants per meter. The experiment was conducted at Goiás State University, Ipameri Campus. Tests were performed to determine the water content, germination, and vigor to evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized, with the treatments arranged in a 2 x 6 factorial scheme, having as factors the row spacing (25 and 50 cm) and the number of plants per meter (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 plants) with four replications. Based on the results of the analysis of variance, germination, first germination count, and emergence speed index were not influenced by row spacing and number of plants per meter. The shoot length of seedlings was significative affected by row spacing and the number of plants per meter. For root length, seedling dry mass and thousand-seed weight there was significant interaction between the studied factors. There was significant effect of row spacing on accelerated aging and seedling emergence. The mung bean plant density affected seed quality. Seeds produced with a row spacing of 50 cm with 24 plants per meter had the best physiological potential.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of maturation fruit and drying temperatures stages on oil content and the physiological performance of crambe seeds. Randomized blocks were the experimental design, with four replications. Harvests occurred when the plants reached 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% brown color fruits. After harvest, seeds were dried at different temperatures (natural and artificial air at 30, 45 and 60 °C). The seeds were evaluated for the weight of a thousand seeds, productivity, oil content, germination and vigor (count of the first germination and seedling emergence). Crambe seeds, FMS Brilhante cultivar, reach the maximum oil content with harvests made from 70% of total brown color fruits. Drying temperatures do not affect the oil content of the seeds. Harvesting crambe seed aiming at the highest physiological quality should occur when the plants have between 75 and 85% brown fruits. Artificial drying at 30 and 45 °C can be recommended for crambe seeds, favoring the production of quality seeds.

Os setores de produção e de conservação de sementes dependem diretamente de trabalhos que determinem as melhores condições de armazenamento e que, consequentemente, garantam o maior período possível de manutenção da qualidade fisiológica da semente. Em regiões tropicais, há uma maior limitação no que tange à manutenção da qualidade fisiológica durante o período de armazenamento, principalmente em ambiente não controlado, cuja variação das condições ambientais pode influenciar sobremaneira a qualidade final de um lote de sementes. Objetivou-se, com o presente trabalho, avaliar a qualidade de sementes de duas cultivares de jiló (Solanum gilo Raddi), armazenadas em condições ambientais não controladas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com 5 repetições, em esquema fatorial 2x5, sendo duas cultivares de jiló (Morro Grande e Português) e 5 períodos de armazenamento (0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de armazenamento). Avaliou-se a porcentagem de germinação, a porcentagem de emergência, o Índice de Velocidade de Emergência, o Coeficiente de Variação no Tempo, o Tempo Médio da Emergência, os Índices de Incerteza e de Sincronia da Emergência e a Frequência Relativa da Emergência de plântulas. A cultivar Português se apresentou com os melhores índices de porcentagem de germinação, porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, tempo médio da emergência e coeficiente de variação do tempo da emergência, quando as sementes foram armazenadas por até dias em ambiente não controlado. A cultivar Português é indicada aos produtores de jiló visando produção de mudas, pois se mostrou superior a cultivar Morro Grande quando armazenadas por até 30 dias em ambiente não controlado. Após 30 dias de armazenamento, a utilização de sementes das duas cultivares não é indicado, pois a porcentagem de germinação cai consideravelmente. Palavras-Chave: Fitotecnia. Produção de sementes. Armazenamento.Viabilidade.   Seed quality of scarlet eggplant stored in environmental conditions not controlled Abstract The sectors of production and conservation of seeds depend directly from studies that determine the best storage conditions and that consequently guarantee the longest possible period of maintenance of physiological quality of seed. In tropical regions, there is a major limitation regarding the maintenance of physiological quality during storage period mainly in uncontrolled environment, whose variation of environmental conditions can greatly influence the final quality of a seed lot. The objective of this final paper was to evaluate the quality of seeds of two cultivars of scarlet eggplant (Solanun gilo Raddi), stored in environmental conditions not controlled. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with 05 replications in a factorial 2 x 5, being two cultivars of scarlet eggplant (Morro Grande and Portuguese) and 05 storage periods (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of storage). Was evaluated the Percentage of Germination, Percentage of Emergence, Emergence Speed Index, Coefficient of Variation of the Time, Average Time of Emergency, Indexes of Uncertainty and Sync the Emergence and Relative Frequency of Seedling Emergence in the time. The Portuguese cultivar presented the best rates of Germination Percentage, Emergency Percentage, Emergency Speed Index, Average Emergence Time and Emergence Time Variation Coefficient, when seeds were stored for up to 30 days in an uncontrolled environment. The Portugues cultivar is indicated to jiló producers aiming seedling production because it was superior to Morro Grande cultivar when stored for up to 30 days in an uncontrolled environment. After 30 days of storage, the use of seeds from both cultivars is not indicated because the germination percentage drops considerably.  Keywords: Phytotechny. Seed production. Storage. Viability.

During seed extraction in fleshy fruits, some procedures are necessary to ensure seed quality and minimize deterioration and microorganism activity; also seeds extracted under moist conditions need special care when drying. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of eggplant seeds submitted to different extraction and drying methods. In the first study, whole eggplant fruits were mechanically crushed and then fermented for 0, 24 and 48 hours, with and without applying hydrochloric acid during seed extraction. In the second study, seeds were extracted in a pepper peeler and then immediately washed in water and submitted to the following drying methods: Sun/24 h; Sun/48 h; 32 °C/24 h; 32 °C/48 h; 38 °C/24 h; 38 °C/48 h; Sun/24 h + 32 °C/24 h; Sun/24 h + 38 °C/24 h e 32 °C/24 h + 38 °C/24 h. The treatment efficiency of both experiments was evaluated from the following tests: seed weight, germination, first count, accelerated aging and seedling emergence. The results suggest that fermentation and applying hydrochloric acid to pulp/seed reduce the physiological seed quality. All drying methods reduced the seed moisture content permitting adequate storage and maintenance of seed physiological quality.

ABSTRACT The aeration of seeds with artificially cooled air and their storage in big-bag packages aim to lengthen the shelf life while maintaining the quality. Thus, the objective was to study the effects of cooling before storage on germination and vigor of soybean seeds stored in trifoliate kraft paper bag and big bag in non-air-conditioned environment. Seeds of soybean cultivar NA 7337 RR were mechanically harvested in March 2013, holding an average moisture content of 18% w.b. In June, 16,000 kg of seeds were processed and cooled to 18 °C. Equal amount of non-cooled seeds was used as a control. Equally divided in kraft paper and in big bags, and combining cooling and packaging, the seeds were stored for three months and analyzed for moisture content, germination and vigor. Cooling to room temperature and different packaging types had similar effects on seed quality. Big bags packing showed better efficiency in retaining the moisture content of cooled seeds. No direct effects of cooling could be identified prior to storage on the germination and vigor of soybean seeds.
