ABSTRACT Lantana camara (L.) is considered one of the main invasive plants, and the allelochemicals produced by this species can be defined as bioactive secondary metabolites that mediate chemical interactions between the plant and other organisms and, therefore, play an important role in its succession and establishment. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of L. camara aqueous extracts on the germination and growth behavior of Bidens pilosa (L.) by evaluating physiological parameters (germination rate, germination speed index, seedling performance and structure and membrane integrity), as well as the extract metabolic profile. The extract reduced the germination speed index and seedling growth rate and promoted abnormalities in the geotropism and root development in both populations. The third germination phase was highly affected (more than the phases I and II). Lantadene A and B are the possible compounds conferring the herbicidal properties, and the L. camara extract has a potential to be used in the development of a new environmentally-friendly herbicide.

Allelopathic effects of lantana (Lantana camaraL. ♯3LANCA) residues (root, shoot), foliar leachates, and the soil (where lantana was grown) on milkweedvine (Morrenia odorataLindl. ♯3MONOD) seed germination and growth over a 30-day period were examined. Foliar leachates or the soil collected from the field where lantana had been growing had no effect on the final germination percentage or the seedling growth of milkweedvine. Incorporation of dried lantana shoot or root material into soil had no effect on the final percentage germination but caused significant reductions in milkweedvine growth over a 30-day test period. Roots were more inhibitory than shoots. Fifty percent of milkweedvine seedlings died within 15 days after germination at 1% (w/w) dried lantana root incorporation into the soil, and higher concentrations increased seedling death. Lantana roots incorporated into the soil produced foliar symptoms such as wilting and desiccation, whereas lantana shoots incorporated into the soil produced yellowing of the foliage of milkweedvine. Allelopathic activity of lantana residues was still strong even after decomposition of lantana residues for 4 weeks prior to the planting of milkweedvine seeds.

Bidens pilosa L. is a summer annual that shows a particular phenological pattern in the Córdoba mountains, Argentina. Some individuals start flowering 1 month after germination (early type), but most of the population starts flowering 4 months after germination (normal type). The aims of this study were to (1) analyse whether differences in flowering phenology affect seed mass and seed production, and (2) assess whether possible differences in seed traits of the two parental phenological types would affect germinability, germination rate, seedling growth and flowering phenology of offspring under laboratory conditions. The study showed that the numbers of seeds per capitulum and per plant were greater in the normal type than in the early type plants. This can be related to plant height, since in the field, normal-type plants are larger than early type plants. However, early type plants produced heavier seeds than normal-type plants. Germination rate was faster in the early type seeds, but total germination was higher in the normal ones. Seedling growth, in terms of height and the date of first flowering, did not differ between the phenological types of parental seed sources. Our results showed that differences in flowering phenology were associated with seed mass and seed production differences. Seed mass appears to be related to germination characteristics but not to seedling growth nor to flowering phenology of offspring.

Conflicting responses have been found for the period of conservation of passion fruit seeds.  Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the response of the seeds of passion fruit progenies to a 24-month storage period.  The sour passion fruit progenies from the third cycle of Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro - UENF intrapopulation recurrent selection program were grown in Itaocara- RJ and the progenies seeds were evaluated for:  germination potential, germination first count, accelerated aging, first count of accelerated aging test, seedling and radicle size and germination speed index.  The germination and vigor of the seeds of the full-sib progenies were assessed by analysis of variance and factorial arrangement with 3 progenies and 7 periods of storage and the averages were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability.  Progenies 1 and 2 responded better to germination (92% for both progeny) and vigor test of accelerated aging (92% for both progeny), rootlet size (6.4 and 5.8 cm, respectively) and germination speed index (2.91 and 2.85, respectively) during storage.  Variations were observed during the storage period in mean of progenies for germination (81-93%) and vigor for all traits, except accelerated aging (84-91%).  At eight months of storage, the seeds presented increased vigor; at 16 months, they showed reduced vigor.  The passion fruit seeds of the progenies under analysis can be stored for up to 24 months with high and uniform germination rate and no loss in vigor.  The seeds from the passion fruit breeding program showed increases in the variables of germination and vigor during the selection process for fruit production variables, proving the efficiency of the breeding program.

Thailand Plasma Focus 2 (TPF-2) is operated at 2.16 kJ of storage energy with argon as a filled gas and can emit sharp x-ray pulses to plant cells in nanosecond (10-9 s) duration. The effects of plasma focus x-ray on seed germination and seedling growth of 14 Thai rice varieties treated under 10 conditions; 0 (control), 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 plasma focus shots, were investigated. The results show that the germination rates and growth reduction rates were significantly different among the rice varieties. The germination rate of 10 varieties (Jek Chuey, KDML105, LPT123, PTT1, RD41, RD47, RD49, RD67, RD79, and SPR2) decreased when treated with a high number of plasma focus shots. LD50 and GR50 values were calculated, except for KTH17, RD1, RD7, and RD31 whose germination only slightly decreased, or remained constant, even after they were treated by 18 plasma focus shots. Electrical conductivity (EC) of nursery medium will affect germination and growth of viola (Viola cornuta L.) seedling. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of various ECs of growing medium on germination and  growth of viola seedling. Research was carried out in December 2016 - January 2017 in nursery room of PT. Selektani Horticulture, Ngablak, Magelang. There were 9 EC treatments repeated 3 times therefore 27 units of experiment were tested. The observed parameters includeds germination rate (DB), and speed (KCT), plant height, number of leaves, shoot dry weight (BKBA) and root dry weight (BKA). Data were analyzed using regression and correlation tests. This study showed that there was a linear relationship between EC and DB as well as between EC and KCT. This is indicated by the following equations y = -20.771x + 99 504 (R2 = 0.9653, n = 27, y = germination (%), x = EC (dS / m) 0 HSS) and y = -5.1109x + 21.6 (R2= 0.8765, n=27, y= KCT (%KN/24hours). The critical EC needed to reach germination rate of higher than 80% was 0.94 dS/m. The correlations between DB and ec as well as KCT and EC were significant: respectively -0.98251 and -0.93621 (n = 27). The Relationships between EC and plant height, number of leaves, BKBA as well as BKA were quadratic. The optimum EC needed for seedling growth was 2.44-2.60 dS/m. The correlation betweenplant height and number of leaves was very strong as showed by the value at 0.9212. The correlation between BKBA and BKA was strong and this was indicated by the value of 0.7561.

In order to study the effect of seed soaking with biogas slurry on seed germination and growth of faba beans (Vicia faba L.), the experiment was conducted. The seeds were soaked in biogas slurry for various soaking durations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours) and different concentration (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %) along with control to determine the optimal soaking duration and find out the best growing condition. The highest germination rate, germination potential and germination index were obtained when the faba beans seeds soaked for 4 hours in 75 % biogas slurry. Seedling growth was recorded in plants where seeds soaked for 6 hours in 75 % biogas slurry. It was concluded that the seed soaking of biogas slurry with lower concentration (25, 50 and 75 %) showed best results regarding maximum germination and enhanced growth. However, under the higher concentration (100 %) conditions of biogas slurry had a tendency of decrease on seed germination and seedling growth.

Effects of seed priming and aging on some physiological characteristics of Milk thistle was studied in a factoral experiment based on Complete Randomized Design (CRD). Tratments were included hydro priming (using distilled water), halo priming (0, 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6% KNO3) and accelerated aging (0, 2, 4 and 6 days under 45°C and 95% humidity) in three replications. Determined parameters were germination charactristics including germination percentage, daily germination speed, mean time of germination, seed vigor index, hypocutile length and hypocutile dry weight. Activity of catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase were determined at 12 hours after imbibition and seedling stage. According to results of this experiment, germination percentage, seed vigor and seedling growth of seeds were increased under all priming treatments. Improving the catalase and peroxidase activity led to decrease the aging damages. Germination characteristics were improved under both priming treatments at the beginning of germination as well as seedling growth. Polyphenol oxidase activity was increased in the pre-treated seeds but decreased in seedling growth stage. Aging treatments led to reduce the germination percentage, daily germination speed, seed vigor and seedling growth while the germination time was increased. Accelerated aging caused to reduce the germination rate and seedling growth of milk thistle that is probably due to increasing the lipid peroxidation, free radical increment and decreasing the antioxidants activity. The greatest and lowest antioxidants activity, the germination percentage, germination speed and seed vigor were respectively observed under priming using 3% KNO3 concentration and control seeds.

Weed biotypes resistant and susceptible to herbicides may have differences in their adaptive values. The aims of this study were to compare, under controlled and non-competitive condition, the growth analysis, germination features and seed weight of Fimbristylis miliacea (FIMMI) biotypes resistant and susceptible to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse and in a laboratory from October 2008 to February 2010. Two resistant biotypes (FIMMI 10 and FIMMI 12) and one susceptible biotype (FIMMI 13) were used for the studies. For the study on growth analysis, the treatments were arranged in a completely randomized experimental design with four replications and sampled at 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 69 days after emergence (DAE) and at flowering stage. For the studies on germination speed, germination and seed weight, the indexes for germination speed, percentage of germination at different temperatures and seed weight of the biotypes were determined. The results showed that the resistant biotype FIMMI 12 shows differences in all variables compared to the resistant biotype FIMMI 10 and compared to the susceptible biotype FIMMI 13, only for the evaluation at flowering. The susceptible biotype FIMMI 13 showed a higher germination speed index and higher germination rate when compared with the resistant biotypes. On the other hand, the resistant biotypes FIMMI 10 and FIMMI 12 showed higher seed weight.

Abstract A laboratory experiment regarding germination and seedling growth test was conducted with three black gram genotypes tested under three salinity levels (0, 75 and 150 mM), for 10 days, in sand culture within small plastic pot, to investigate the germination and seedling growth characteristics. Different germination traits of all black gram genotypes, like germination percentage (GP), germination rate (GR), coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG) greatly reduced, as well as mean germination time (MGT) increased with increasing salt stress. At high salt stress, BARI Mash-3 provided the highest GP reduction (28.58%), while the lowest was recorded (15.79% to control) in BARI Mash-1. Salinity have the negative impact on shoot and root lengths, fresh and dry weights. The highest (50.32% to control) and lowest reduction (36.39%) of shoot length were recorded in BARI Mash-2 and BARI Mash-1, respectively, under 150 mM NaCl saline conditions. There were significant reduction of root lengths, root fresh and dry weight, shoot length, shoot fresh and dry weight in all genotypes under saline condition. The genotypes were arranged as BARI Mash-1 > BARI Mash-3 > BARI Mash-2, with respect to salinity tolerance.

Abstract: Chitosan is a biopolymer obtained from deacetylation of chitin; it has multiple applications in agriculture as an antifungal, soil conditioner, inducer of defense mechanisms, fruits postharvest coating, leaves and seeds, among others. The objective in this research was to evaluate the effect of chitosan coatings mixed with fungicide (dithiocarbamate) on the germination and germination speed of bean and maize seeds in storage and to determine the retention capacity of the fungicide in the coated seeds under different times of imbibition. Two coating treatments at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5% chitosan in water, two coatings treatments at 0.1 and 0.5% chitosan supplemented with 0.5% fungicide and a coating without chitosan using only 0.5% fungicide in water were used in bean and maize seed; and as control seeds imbibed in distilled water were used; after treatments, germination percentage and germination speed were determined, also fungicide release were determined at 0, 1, 2 and 6 h of imbibition, and the effect of storage time on germination and germination speed was determined at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days of storage at 4 °C and 45% relative humidity. The fungicide release effect was determined by inhibiting Fusarium oxysporum conidia germination. There were no negative effects of coatings on seed germination after storage. The treatment that provided both greater retention of the fungicidal agent and released it gradually, was 0.5% chitosan mixed with fungicide concentration. Chitosan coating seeds mixed with fungicide do not cause negative changes in seed germination or germination rate.
