The study of probiotic application as an important rearing strategy was started more than 30 years ago and most of these studies were carried out to increase growth and survival of larvae. Effect of Bifidobacterium animalis PTTC-1631 and B. lactis PTTC-1736 as probiotic supplement has been studied on growth performance and hematological changes on rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss alevins with initial body weight of 0.583 ± 0.197 g. The commercial diet was supplemented with graded levels of probiotics (1×107, 2×107 and 3×107 CFU g-1 dry feed) to obtain 3 sets of experimental diets (T1, T2, andT3 respectively) and fed four times a day for 60 days. T1 alevin showed the best growth performance in terms of specific growth rate, weight gain, metabolic growth rate, feed conversion ratio and survival rate. The highest red and white blood cell concentrations were noticed in fish fed T2 and T3 diets, respectively, no significant difference was observed in hemoglobin content. T1 showed the significant elevation of serum biochemical parameters and reduction of cortisol level. The results of present study might suggest likely positive effects of probiotic supplements with concentration of 1×107 CFU g-1 dry feed on growth and hematology on rainbow trout alevins.

Medicinal plants exhibit remarkable positive effects on different aspects of fish physiology. This study aimed to evaluate the possible impact of a combination of plants (Mentha longifolia, Thymus carmanicus, and Trachyspermum copticum) on growth performance, immune responses and key immune gene expression of rainbow trout. For this purpose, four diets were designed, including zero, 0.25, 0.5, and 1% of a mixture of plants per kg of diet, representing dietary treatments of control, T1, T2, and T3, respectively. Two hundred forty fish (weighing 23.11 ± 0.57 g) were fed 3% of body weight twice a day for 45 days. The results showed that growth parameters of weight gain (except for T1) and FCR were significantly improved in fish receiving all levels of plants, with T3 showing the best growth results. Digestive enzymes activities were notably increased in T1 and T2 compared to the control. Stress biomarkers (glucose and cortisol) were significantly decreased in T1 and T2, while T3 was not significantly different from the control. Immunological responses were significantly improved in T2, while T1 andT3 did not show a statistical difference in terms of lysozyme activity. Catalase activity was noticeably decreased in T1, although superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde were highest in T2. Immune-related genes were significantly up-regulated in T3 compared to other treatments. Also, antioxidant enzyme coding genes were strongly up-regulated in T2 and T3. Overall, the present results suggest that 1% inclusion of the mixture of M. longifolia, T. carmanicus, and T. copticum (T2) can be used to improve the growth and immunity of rainbow trout.

Abstract Lobster is among freshwater crustaceans which is potentially cultivated in aquaculture system. This present study was conducted to determine the growth and survival rate of freshwater lobster Cherax quadricarinatus fed different forage feed. The experimental methode used a completely randomized design consisted of 4 treatments in triplicate: commercial diet (PL), commercial diet and carrots (PW), commercial diet and potatoes (PK) and commercial diet and sweet potatoes (PU). The experimental lobsters were 5-7 cm in size and 6-8 g in weight. Results indicated that forage feeding can affect the total weight and length, weight gain, specific growth rate and survival rate of lobster. Data showed the best weight gain and specific growth rate were found in PW (34.37±0.30%) and (1.05±0.03%), respectively. The lowest survival rate was seen in PU at 86.67%. However, the best feed conversion ratio gained by PL at 1.74±0.09. This study suggested that the combination of commercial diet with carrots provided the best growth performances in freshwater lobster Cherax quadricarinatus.

This study evaluated the effect of periphyton technology (PPT) on the growth performance and breeding schedule of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) juveniles. Six ponds, each measuring 81 m2 were used for the study. The ponds were applied with agricultural lime at a rate of 4 g.m-2, and fertilised using chicken manure to facilitate primary productivity. The PPT ponds were fitted with two-metre-long eucalyptus poles of 5 cm diameter placed at 50 cm intervals with the regular addition of molasses as a carbon source. Tilapia juveniles were stocked at a density of 3 fish.m-2 in all ponds and fed on a commercial diet of 20 % crude protein (CP) twice daily at 3 % body weight. Fish were sampled weekly for growth and survival data and bi-weekly for fecundity estimates. The PPT-ponds registered significantly higher survival rate (97.50 ± 0.35 %), mean weight (150.69 ± 0.99 g), specific growth rate (SGR) (2.75 ± 0.01), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (1.29 ± 0.01), than the control ponds, which registered survival (91.15 ± 0.88 %), mean weight (99.23 ± 0.96 g), SGR (2.29 ± 0.00), and FCR (1.58 ± 0.01). There was significantly higher fecundity in the PPT-ponds (2.28 ± 0.09 g.fish-1) than control (1.74 ± 0.06 g.fish-1), with prolific spawning starting 4 weeks earlier in the control ponds than in the PPT-ponds. This study demonstrated the potential of PPT for enhancing tilapia growth while delaying prolific breeding behaviour. Further studies should explore PPT in replacing synthetic hormones for sex-reversal of tilapia fry in hatcheries.

In this study, the effects of various daily feeding ratios on the growth, stomach volume and meat composition in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. The feeding experiment was conducted in 450 L volume fiberglass tanks with 3 × 3 factorial patterns. During the experiment, while food were given to the fish at the first group in the 0.5% (I) of ratio of their live weight, the second group at the level of 2% (II) food were given to the fish, at the third group at the level of 6% (III) food. The initial weight and size values of the groups were 76.16±0.41 g and 19.11±1.63 cm, respectively. The final weight and size values reached up to 128.89±34.21 g, 25.09±2.37 cm; 236.05±89.32 g, 24.78±2.22 cm; and 238.91±86.67 g, 21.65±1.64 cm, for groups I, II, and III respectively. The best growth performance in terms of weight was obtained in group III, while the best growth performance in terms of size was obtained in groups I and II (P < 0.05). The best feed conversion ratio was determined in the low feeding group I (P < 0.05). At the end of experiment, three of the experimental groups were different from each other. The highest stomach volume was measured in group III (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the 6% feeding ratio increased the growth and significantly increased the stomach volume, however decreased the feed conversion ratio.

One of the freshwater fishes thatbegan to bedeveloped is Wader fish, but there is still a lot of information that has notbeen supportedon fish farming techniques. One of them is the optimal stocking density for cultivation. The purpose of this study was to study the effects of different stocking densities on the growth and survival rates of the WaderCakulfish (Puntiusbinotatus).This research was conductedin May - July 2018. The method used in this study was to use aCompletely Randomized Design with 4 training, namely P1 (2 fish/liter), P2 (3 fish/liter), P3 (4 fish/liter) and P4 (5 fish/liter).Each treatment was repeated3 times. The main parameters were absolute growth rate (length and weight gain)(GR), specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR).Data were analyzedusing ANOVA (analysis of variance) and continued with the Least Significant Difference Test. The results showed that different stocking densities gave significant values (P <0.05) for GR, SGR, SR and FCR comparisons. The best treatment in this study was P1 with a growth value of 0.31 ± 0.01 gram, SGR 3.50 ± 0.03%, Long Growth 1.97 ± 0.05 cm, SR 85.07 ± 2.17% and FCR 1.47 ± 0.02. P1 (2 fish/liter) is the best maintenance to increase the growth, survival rate, and feed efficiency of thecakulwader fish.

During the farming of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), losses can be very high. In aquaculture, various agents are used, such as copper, for the purpose of preventive action and prevention of the appearance of pathogens (ectoparasites, etc.). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of substrate-fixed copper microparticles on the growth and survival of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) up to the age of 5 months. The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory for Aquaculture of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Banja Luka, for 142 days in flow aquariums with a 65 l/aquarium volume. The experiment was set up in two groups (150 units/group) with three replicates (50 units/replicate), a control group without copper microparticles (K) and a group with copper microparticles (Cu). The initial weight and total body length (mean ? SD) of rainbow trout in group K were 0.199 ? 0.008 g and 2.876 ? 0.036 cm, and in group Cu 0.197 ? 0.009 g and 2.893 ? 0.038 cm. The average total length and body weight of individuals from the K and Cu groups were similar (p > 0.05). The differences in FCR, CF, SGR and TGC between group K and group Cu were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Survival of juvenile rainbow trout was high and it was 97.33% in group K and 96.00% in group Cu, and no statistically significant difference was found (p > 0.05). The growth and survival of juvenile rainbow trout in the K and Cu groups were similar.

The most important portion of the aquaculture production with 40-60% of the operating expenses is the feed cost. The decline in natural fish stocks and the resulting increase in the cost of fish meal have led to feed producers and researchers to search for new and/or alternative raw materials for fish feed production. Orange peel essential oil (EO) contains 94.72% D-limonene. Four essential oil supplemented diets (0%, 0.5‰, 1‰ and 3‰) prepared for rainbow trout juvenile. Four groups fish were stocked 100 L aquarium (55 fish per aquarium) with free flow water system for triplicate study in 90 days feeding trial. At the end of the 90-days experimental feeding period; feed conversion ratio is importantly decreased, relative growth rate, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio are importantly increased at the 1‰ rate orange peel essential oil additives group (p<0.05).

One way to increase cultivation productivity is by increasing stocking. Gouramy is a freshwater commodity that has a fairly slow growth performance. This study aims to determine the growth performance of gouramy reared at different stocking densities. The 3 cm gourami are reared in a pond containing 35 liters of water. ponds P1 (30 heads), P2 (50 heads), P3 (100 heads), P4 (150 heads), P5 (200 heads) each was repeated 3 times. Growth rate (GR), specific growth rate (SGR), survival rate (SR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured and analyzed for variance (ANOVA) followed by LSD. The results showed that the fish reared in pond P1 showed the best GR, SGR, FCR, and SR (3.8 g, 3.99 %, 96 %, and 1.11 respectively). The lower the density, the better the growth performance but based on efficiency and productivity the best is at P2.

Introduction: Tilapias (Family Cichlidae) are among the freshwater fish species suitable for aquaculture and widely cultivated globally because of their fast growth rate, efficient use of natural aquatic foods, propensity to consume a variety of supplementary feeds, omnivorous feeding habits, resistance to disease and handling, ease of reproduction in captivity, and tolerance to wide ranges of environmental conditions Aims: Experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of Oreochromis niloticus fed varying levels of Basella alba leave based diets. Materials and Methods: O. niloticus fingerlings (1.95±0.01g) were randomly selected and distributed into 15 glass tanks at the rate of 15 fish per tank representing five treatments and three replicates. Five diets were formulated to containing (0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 g/100kg diets) of B. alba were prepared and fed to the fish for 70 days. Results: The results revealed that weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake and feed conversion ratio improved progressively up to the inclusion level of 2.0 g/100g of B. alba leave meal and then declined indicating 2.0g/100g B. alba leave meal as the optimum level that can promote the growth performance of the fish. However, 4th degree polynomial regression analysis indicated the optimum level as about 2.1 g/100g diet. It was observed that there was no significant difference in the survival (p > 0.05) of the fish fed diets with different B. alba leave meal. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained from this present study, it could be concluded that 2.0-2.1 g/100kg of B. alba leave can be included in the diets of O. niloticus fingerlings for optimum growth performance.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of beta-glucan in rainbow trout’s diet on survival, growth performance, hematological, immunity and biochemical parameters. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with an average weight of 6.35 ± 0.09 were stocked in 30 fiberglass tanks with a volume of 200 liters. Four treatments including: control group (0%), 0.5, 1 and 2% of beta-glucan were considered for 8 weeks. The results showed that the survival and growth performance of rainbow trout in the control group were at the lowest level and showed a significant difference with other treatments. The highest percentage of hematocrit (47.9%), white blood cell count, neutrophil percentage (35.2%) was observed in the treatment with 2% beta-glucan. Also, the highest lysosomal activity (59.7 units’ mL− 1, IgM (54.7 mg dL− 1), C3 and C4 was obtained in 2% beta-glucan treatment. Biochemical parameters showed improvement in treatments fed with 1 and 2% beta-glucan. In general, the present study showed that 2% beta-glucan in the diet of rainbow trout improves growth performance, survival, hematological, immunity and biochemical parameters.
