Fish catch composition of some selected small scale fishing gears (gill net, cast net, beach seine and long line) were investigated in Bonny River, Rivers State, Nigeria from August 2014 to January 2015. A total number of 25 fish species from 18 families were recorded during the study. The Mugilidae with only one species constituted the dominant family while Cichlidae, Lutjanidae, Clupeidae, had three species and Scianidae had two species of fish caught and the remaining families had one species each. Mugil cephalus constituted 28.48% of the total catches followed by C. nigrodigitatus (22.48%). In the dry season M. cephalus forms the major component landings (32.65%), followed by C. nigrodigitatus (26.53%) and S. galilaeus (12.24%) while in the wet season M. cephalus (31.06%), C. nigrodigitatus (18.63%) and T. zillii (11.80%) were the dominant fish species. Cast net was the most efficient fishing gear while gill net was the least efficient. The comparison analysis between the wet and dry seasons using t-test showed no significant difference between dry and wet seasons (t = 0.092, P > 0.05).

Manado Bay waters have long been known as a center of artisanal fisheries activities because of the availability of abundant fisheries resources. However,  continuous increase in technoligcal  development and fish resources demand make natural resources exploitation tend to destruct the  aquatic habitat and fish resources itself. Therefore, this study was aimed to inventory the types of fishing gears operated in Manado Bay; evaluate the possible impact on fish resources and environment; and analyze the status of fishing fisheries sustainability. This study was based on survey methods, through direct observation of fishing process and observations on the catch composition. Fisheries sustainability status was analyzed using Rapfish program. Common fishing gears used by fishermen in Manado Bay were multi hooks vertical hand line (noru), bottom hand line, trolling line, bottom long line, surface gill net, bottom gill net and traps. Fishing gears that do not have an impact on fish resources and environment is noru fishing, trolling and surface gill net, while bottom long line, bottom gill net and trap could potentially have negative impact on fish resources and physical seabed habitat. ordination sustainability status analysis of fishing fisheries in Manado Bay for each dimension is still considered as sustainable enough.

Fish biodiversity on Hau (Bassac) river was investigated to assess the status of species composition and fishing by fishing gears during a year. Sampling was implemented monthly at the upper part (An Giang province), middle part (Can Tho City) and lower part (Soc Trang province) of Hau River using trawl net as main sampling gear. Additionally, fish composition was also recorded from four other most popular fishing gears including cast net, gill net, fixed net and hook operated in the study sites. Fish species composition was determined by fishing gears and their abundance (CPUE) was calculated only from the main sampling gear (trawl net). The results showed that a total of 176 fish species belonging to 16 orders and 49 families was recorded. Perciformes was the most abundant group with 51 species followed by Cypriniformes with 46 species. The number of fish species was decreasing from upper part to lower part. Trawl net was considered the most destructive gear as up to 145 fish species caught by this device, followed by gill net with 98 species, fixed net 75, cast net 57, and hooks 16 species. CPUE was very low ranging from  0.53 kg.ha−1 h−1 to 26.30 kg.ha−1 h−1. Higher CPUE was recorded at lower part in compared to upper part and middle part, and at dry season in compared to rainy season. Regulation on fishing gears, fishing ground and season should be taken into consideration to protect and conserve the resources.

Studies were conducted on catch assessment of some artisanal marine fishing gears operated in Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf areas from April 2014 to April 2015. Sixteen types of fishing gears were identified, of which gill net, beach seine net, estuarine set bag net, marine set bag net and trammel net occupy major fishing activities. Although estuarine set bag net (ESBN) is a legally restricted fishing gear recorded the highest catch per unit effort (CPUE) (110 kg/gear/day) in July followed by marine set bag net (MSBN) (105 kg/gear/day) in Cox’s Bazar and the highest CPUE was recorded 100 kg/gear/day by ESBN in June followed by MSBN (90 kg/gear/day) in Teknaf. Out of 52 species of fishes, the major fish species abundantly caught by these gears were Poa (Otolithoides argenteus), Churi (Trichiurus haumela), Loittya (Harpadon nehereus), Ranga choukha (Lutjanus johni), Lal poa (Johnius argentatus), Olua (Coilia dussumieri), Rup chanda (Stromateus chinensis), (Stromateus argenteus) and Ilish (Tenualosa ilisha). Besides these fish species, 10 commercially important shrimp species and 3 important crab species were also recorded during the study period. The peak season of availability of most fish species was June and July while lean season was December and January. This study indicated that Otolithoides argenteus) was the dominant fish species followed by Trichiurus haumela, Harpadon nehereus and Coilia dussumieri.Progressive Agriculture 27 (2): 228-234, 2016

Siak River one of the biggest river at Riau Province has a multipurpose function including fisheries. Fishing activity at the river used a traditional gear which was operated by individual or group fisherman. A study aimed to investigate number and type of fishing gears, fish species caught, relative abundance and fish diversity of the Siak River was conducted from Kuala Tapung until Muara Mandau in 2008. Data of fishing were collected from the fisherman operated the fishing gears. Monthly data on fish species caught and fish yield were collected directly by enumerator. Results of the study showed that eight kinds of fishing gears, namely gillnets, long line, hand line, traps (luka, pengilar, and belad), filtering device, and cast net were operated. The dominant fishing gear operated was gillnet and cast net and filtering device in the next. About sixty fish species from the twelve families and giant freshwaters prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were caught using those fishing gears. During June, August, and October, the relative abundance of the fish species was dominated by family of Cyprinidae and Engraulidae. The fish diversity index of the Siak River ranged from 0.5-3.0.

Of particular concern in commercial fishing catch is 'size bycatch', i.e., the death of early stages of resources that would reach a marketable value when they turn into adults. This event is frequently associated with trawling because of the lower size selectivity of this gear as compared to gillnets. However, this is expected when small-scale fisheries (SSF) employ gillnets simultaneously in setnets + driftnets that mix multiple mesh sizes. This work analyzes fishing captures and compares characteristics of fish catch from gillnets and trawlers with respect to size at first maturation, legal size of capture, and expected discards. Data were obtained from 2007-2021 for SSF in Southern Brazil. A total of 112 fish species were represented in the data. Gillnets exploited fewer species than trawlers; however, most of these constitute fishing resources in the study region. Of the 19 species whose maturation size is known, nine occurred in gillnets as juveniles, and of the 14 species for which the legal size of capture is established, seven occurred in gillnets in prohibited sizes. Gillnets and trawlers presented size bycatch and affected different species between them, with four resources that were present in bycatch from both gillnets and trawlers. The broad range of mesh sizes employed by SSF warns of the discarding of undersized captures, and stresses the importance of policies addressing gillnet management.

Sex ratio affects the growth of wild population, thus, with the declining wild fish population, the study was designed to determine the effect of seasons on the sex ratio of fish population from Ikere Gorge, Nigeria for 18 months. Fish composition, diversity, distribution and abundance were determined according to standard methods. Sexes were determined and sex ratio was calculated using a standard method. A total of 5,823 fish specimens were caught during the period. The captured fish species were identified and classified into 34 species belonging to 13 families. The species richness was higher in the dry months than in the wet months. Fish diversity indices and evenness revealed a better diverse and even ecosystem in the wet season than the dry season. A marked significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed between the species in the dry months than the wet season. Chrysichthyes nigrodigitatus (35.07±7.59a) was significantly (p < 0.05) more abundant than the other species in the dry season. The sex ratio was skewed in favour of the female populations for C. nigrodigitatus, Tilapia melanopleura and Sarotherodon galilaeus but the reverse was the case for L. niloticus population. No monthly variation was observed in sex ratio of the species. The fish fauna from Ikere Gorge showed marked variations in the catch composition between the dry and wet months. C. nigrodigitatus and the Cichlids (Hemichromis fasciatus, S. galilaeus, Tilapia macrocephla and T. melanopleura) were present all year.
