The article analyzes sentimentalist origins in the poetics of the novel Serotonin (2019) by M. Houellebecq. It considers realization of the sentimentalism traditions in the literature process at the turn of the 20th–21st centuries; the analysis is based on the studies of Russian and foreign scholars. The revival of interest in the inner world of a private person, sincerity of the words is considered to be one of the main reasons for developing ‘new sentimentality’. The research is focused on J. J. Rousseau’s traditions in sentimentalism. The paper provides a comparative analysis of the novel under study and autobiographic works by J. J. Rousseau such as The Confessions (Les Confessions, 1765–1770) and Reveries of the Solitary Walker (Les rêveries du promeneur solitaire, 1776–1778). The starting point of the plot in both Reveries of the Solitary Walker by Rousseau and Serotonin by Houellebecq is the narrator’s statement of his absolute solitude and premonition of his coming death. In such tragic circumstances every person tries to say the last words about themselves. In both novels the theme of writing is of great importance and the narrator’s own personality and destiny become an object of creative reflection. The main purpose of the narrator in Reveries of the Solitary Walker is to tell the truth about himself to himself. There is no companion in the person of a compassionate reader, which is important to the sentimentalist tradition, in the Rousseau’s novel. The character of narrator in the novel by Houellebecq is focused on describing the circumstances which led him to the failure in the fight for survival. That is why his life ends in loneliness, sadness and suffering. Reflecting upon his own life, he offers the attentive reader to fill the gaps and establish a casual connection. The theme of memory is realized in relation to the process of self-description. In the Rousseau’s novel, the narrator’s diving into himself and writing about himself are done during his solitude walks full of dreaming and contemplation of nature, which helps him find peace and quiet. The Houellebecq‘s narrator compares his own experience with that of the Rousseau’s character and admits the mediocrity and insignificance of his own existence. He is running on a sentimental journey to the places of the lost love and friendship but he is incapable of reaching unity with nature, which could be salvation for him. His lot is despair. Reproducing a significant number of motifs and images used by Rousseau in The Confession and Reveries of the Solitary Walker, Houellebecq reflects on the human and eternal values via the dialogue.

The article considers literary self-definition of Fyodor Dostoevsky at the starting point of his career as a writer. Its purpose is to reveal connections of the young author with contemporary writers and his place in the literary process on the basis of specific texts. The article continues the research presented in two articles published in 2013 and examines a wider range of texts related to Dostoevsky’s first novel, Poor Folk. By applying the principles of comparative analysis to the repeated narrative elements, the author of the article shows that Mikhail Voskresensky’s story “Zamoskvoretskie Tereza i Faldoni” (1843), which is considered to be parodied in Poor Folk, has just one common feature with Dostoevsky's novel: names of one main and one secondary character. The names refer to a popular sentimental novel by Nicolas Germain Léonard (1783), retold with disapproval by N. M. Karamzin, while Voskresensky’s story was unworthy even of caricature for the insignificance of its content and its poetics. It should also be noted that not a single motif that exclusively belongs to this story was reproduced by Dostoevsky at any time later. The situation is quite different in the case of Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Conspirators (Le Chevalier d’Harmental), published in a newspaper in 1841–1842 and as a separate edition in 1843. The novel’s plot twists, main characters, some features of their personalities and some details regarding what happens to them are reflected in Poor Folk. But this was not done for reasons of parody. Dostoevsky chose the novel by the famous Frenchman only to promote his own world view and the new principles of art – the nascent realism with its unadorned “truth of life”, harsh and often tragic reality in contrast to the benevolent romanticism

Since September 1, 2019, GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2019 has been enacted as a national standard in the Russian Federation. The novel standard imposes a number of fundamentally new requirements for testing laboratories (hereinafter referred to as the IL or laboratory), and also supplements and specifies the requirements previously regulated by GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2009. In this regard, in order to transfer laboratories to the new requirements, the FSA issued an order in August 2019 listing the mandatory activities that IL must fulfill to bring their activities in line with the new requirements. However, a transition period desired for matching these requirements is absent on a practical level for a number of the laboratories. The purpose of the article is to facilitate a gentle, efficient and pain-free move from the requirements of GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2009 to the new requirements of GOST ISO/IEC 17025–2019, including compliance with new changes in accreditation criteria. We carried out a comparative analysis of the requirements of the new and previous versions of the standard and marked each new and significant item to which the laboratory should pay attention first of all. The new standard focuses on the application of the process approach, risk and opportunity management, as well as on implementation of the policy of impartiality, independence, minimization of competitive interests and confidentiality. The article describes the planning, implementation and monitoring of each event or phase of the transition of testing laboratories to new requirements. Moreover, the recommendations on the structure of the «Quality Manual» and self-assessment on the compliance of IL activities and QMS with the new requirements, including the use of statistical methods for substantiation of the correctness of the assessment are given as an example of the implementation of IL capabilities.

Michel Butor, born in 1926, one of the leaders of the French New Novel movement, has written only four novels between 1954 and 1960. The most famous of them is La Modification (Second thoughts), published in 1957. The author of the paper analyzes two other Butor’s novels: L’Emploi du temps (Passing time) – 1956, and Degrés (Degrees) – 1960. The theme of absence is crucial in both of them. In the former, the novel, presented as the diary of Jacques Revel, a young Frenchman spending a year in Bleston (a fictitious English city vaguely similar to Manchester), describes the narrator’s struggle to survive in a double – spatial and temporal – labyrinth. The first of them, formed by Bleston’s streets, squares and parks, is symbolized by the City plan. During his one year sojourn in the city, using its plan, Revel learns patiently how to move in its different districts, and in its strange labyrinth – strange because devoid any centre – that at the end stops annoying him. The other, the temporal one, symbolized by the diary itself, the labyrinth of the human memory, discovered by the narrator rather lately, somewhere in the middle of the year passed in Bleston, becomes, by contrast, more and more dense and complex, which is reflected by an increasinly complex narration used to describe the past. However, at the moment Revel is leaving the city, he is still unable to recall and to describe the events of the 29th of February 1952. This gap, this absence, symbolizes his defeat as the narrator, and, in the same time, the human memory’s limits. In Degrees temporal and spatial structures are also very important. This time round, however, the problems of the narration itself, become predominant. Considered from this point of view, the novel announces Gerard Genette’s work Narrative Discourse and his theoretical discussion of two narratological categories: narrative voice and narrative mode. Having transgressed his narrative competences, Pierre Vernier, the narrator of the first and the second parts of the novel, who, taking as a starting point, a complete account of one hour at school, tries to describe the whole world and various aspects of the human civilization for the benefit of his nephew, Pierre Eller, must fail and disappear, as the narrator, from the third part, which is narrated by another narrator, less audacious and more credible.

The landscape description is used in the work as an additional tool for aesthetic values and helps to reveal the images of heroes, and in the development of the action of the work/ The writer in the novel subtly uses the landscape description. The mountains are the sublime and the most valuable in a person, and the full moon is a happy state of mind of a person, and the transformation of a cloudless sky into a raging view indicates how restless the soul of the protagonist is, his restless thoughts. How his inner world is raging, and the swallows are restlessly flying, foreshadow the misfortune, the birds flying away ahead of time, the transformation of green grass, trees in the forehead the horrors of war. This article describes the idea of the story "Do not kill" which is given instead of the epilogue in the novel "When the mountains fall" which was written by Ch.Aitmatov. Everyone knows that phraseological units are the most popular genre of oral folk art, which was formed as a result of life observations of the ancestors. Learning and analyzing Chinese phraseology allow us to better understand the inner world of the Chinese nation. This article reveals and semantically analyzes aspects of the word “head” that are closely related to Chinese culture. The worldview, deep logical thoughts, feelings, superstitions, lifestyle and environment of the Chinese people are described in phraseological expressions in a concise and clear form. This article discusses the semantics and features of Chinese-language phraseological phrases associated with the word “head”. Chinese-language phrases associated with “head” express meanings such as wisdom and ignorance, process of thinking, cunning,sagacity, and planning. Phraseological units in Chinese linguistics are closely related to practical life and determine such features as philosophical and ideological thinking, logical observation. Taking into account the above, the article provides a comparative analysis of phraseological units related to “head” in Chinese and Uzbek languages. The figurative meanings of the word “head” are being revealed, semantic connections and semantic structure of phrases in the sentence are in the process of learning. Chinese phraseological expressions are poorly studied in Uzbek-Chinese studies. We hope that this work will provide practical assistance to our young people who are learning Chinese.

This time the fiction is founded upon facts' stated Wilkie Collins in his Preface to Man and Wife (1870). Many Victorian writers responded to contemporary debates on the rights and the legal status of women, and here Collins questions the deeply inequitable marriage laws of his day. Man and Wife examines the plight of a woman who, promised marriage by one man, comes to believe that she may inadvertently have gone through a form of marriage with his friend, as recognized by the archaic laws of Scotland and Ireland. From this starting-point Collins develops a radical critique of the values and conventions of Victorian society. Collins had already developed a reputation as the master of the 'sensation novel', and Man and Wife is as fast moving and unpredictable as The Moonstone and The Woman in White. During the novel the atmosphere grows increasingly sinister as the setting moves from a country house to a London suburb and a world of confinement, plotting, and murder.

This essay takes as its starting point the relative lack of a contender to the “novel of ′68” in Mexico. I argue that Jorge Volpi's 2003 El fin de la locura constitutes the final writing of such a novel, to appear some 35 years after the original events of that year. The double “renewal” pursued by this work is explored both as an intended restoration of the literary to a place of social privilege after a period of decline, and also as a conservative restoration of order following the revolutionary sequences of the 20th century. However, I argue, the novel cannot finally commit to artistic renewal without also confirming the “madness” of the century; the literary renewal pursued in Volpi's text thus becomes the very political renewal that the author seeks to avoid.

This article is dedicated to the analysis of peculiarities of space arrangement in the “Divine Comedy” by Alighieri and the novel Moby-Dick, or The Whale” by Herman Melville. On the examples of structural mythologemes “journey inside yourself” and “path towards the center of a circle”, present in both works, the author notes the impact of Dante upon Melville and determines the differences in their poetics of space. Structural, semantic and comparative-historical analysis of the texts in question allows speaking of the transformation of symbolism of the images of circle and its center, circular, vertical and horizontal movement, as well as reconsideration of meaning of the category of chaos and order, opposition “internal-external” from Dante’s works to worldview of the authors of the era of Romanticism. The novelty of this work consists in simultaneous analysis of the impact of Dante’s poetry upon Melville and comparison of peculiarities of the poetics of space of both authors for determining fundamental changes in representations of the structure of world space and space of the inner world of a person. In artistic realm of H. Melville, symbolic point of the center of a circle – “center of the world” –is no longer static, it becomes unreliable, depicting heads of madman characters and the images of the objects, which semantics does not resemble the concept of emptiness. The motif of the loss of structuredness along with the motif of mutual reciprocity of spatial dimensions and characteristics distinguish Melville’s poetics of space, delineated in the dialogue with distinct features of space arrangement in Dante’s works.

The study analyzes lexemes and word combinations of colloquial style, slang and low colloquial language, performs their comparative analysis at word level, looks into the transformational patterns that the structures undergo during literary translation into English and Russian, and discusses the advantages and flaws of the applied translation strategies through suggesting adequate translation solutions. In the article, the argument is made that the translation strategies of substandard lexis reflect the interdisciplinary nature of expressive meaning and connotation which can be conveyed differently through various language levels during literary translation.

The analysis of discussions on various aspects of the evolution of the modern state, the specifics of post-communist transformations and the role that Marxism and the tradition of radical socialist thought can play in the near future in their search for a way out of the crisis generated by the agony of the neoliberal global world order. As a starting point for the analysis, theoretical articles published in the second edition of the collection Communism, Anticommunism, Russophobia in post-Soviet Russia. 2nd ed., Add. / Auth.: P.P. Apryshko et al. - Moscow: World of Philosophy, Algorithm, 2021 (607 p.) were selected. A comparative analysis of the polemical works of domestic scientists, political theorists and philosophers with those discussions that for many decades have been conducted by their colleagues abroad clearly indicates that today none of the existing ideologies, as well as the paradigms of economic and socio-political theory, can pretend to be the only recourse. The experience of recent decades clearly excludes the very possibility of transforming the economy and society on the basis of a certain universal synthetic model. In post-communist Russia, the heat of political passions, which stimulates the extreme polarization of political programs for overcoming the crisis, also hinders the achievement of agreement and the search for a solution acceptable to all.
