In the current entrepreneurial environment characterised by the dynamic development and changes, organizations have to promote the development of their employees in order to achieve a competitive advantage. Therefore, the personality of a manager who is a holder of specific knowledge, abilities, skills, traits, motives, attitudes and values becomes increasingly important as it is the main source for gaining a competitive advantage. Managerial competencies, i.e. the individual characteristic necessary to reach the required level of a manager’s performance, together with an efficient management thus become the key factor of success. The article focuses on the identification of managerial competencies in knowledge-based organizations in the Czech Republic. The first part of the article focuses on the theoretical approaches to managerial competencies, competency models and knowledge-based organizations. The second part of the article deals with the proposed methodology for the identification of managerial competencies. The final part summarizes the benefits and difficulties of applying the competency-based approach as a tool of the efficient management of organizations for the purpose of achieving a competitive advantage. The utilization of managerial competencies to achieve competitive advantage is important in all fields including the economics and management of agriculture and other similar fields.  

Competency models are prevalent within various industries in business. Their popularity is due to the value they add to employee development and organizational capability. The popularity of competency models and specifically competency-based approaches are covered in this chapter. Competence-based approaches and how businesses in the market use them for gaining and maintaining a competitive advantage are also covered. How competency-based approaches have evolved into a new area of performance management that allows businesses to integrate existing organizational systems into a single performance system where they make more use of knowledge and become knowledge management organizations through competency that is modeled in their business is also covered. The chapter sets the tone of the book.

The organisation that wants to build competitive advantages has to create and leverage its capabilities. One of the central bases for achieving competitive advantage is the organisational capability to create new knowledge and transfer it across various levels and parts of the organisation. Because knowledge is central to strategy formulation and implementation, knowledge management has become a key strategic task facing managers for achieving success in today's complex and dynamic environments. A major challenge facing strategic management is engineering and managing the individual and group level knowledge that facilitates better strategies and invokes commitment. A knowledge management based model of strategy formulation process is presented. Traditional strategy frameworks are evaluated and a comprehensive cognition and learning centered strategy framework is suggested as a better model of strategy formulation and implementation for achieving competitive advantage. The implications of the knowledge-based approach for strategic management practice and research are highlighted.

The study objective was identification of the service industries that determine the rate and lines of development of a knowledge-based economy. The analysis covered the EU member countries and the years of 2008-2012. This report consists of four sections. The first one provides the characteristics of a knowledgebased economy and describes the role of services sector in progressing towards this stage of development. The second section offers a classification of services that led to establishing the category of knowledge-based services. The industries classified as knowledge-based services contribute directly to the creation, processing and distribution of knowledge throughout an economy. The following part presents a division of the EU member economies into four groups, depending on their advancement towards the knowledge-based economy as defined by two indices: the Knowledge Economy Index (KEI) and the Knowledge Index (KI). The study concluded on empirical verification of the significance of knowledge-based services within individual European economies. In a knowledge-based economy, where knowledge is the key factor in gaining a competitive advantage, it is just the services related to knowledge acquisition, distribution and creation that drive the economic growth. The development level of service activities classified as knowledge-based services largely determines the economy’s performance in knowledge creation, distribution and use. This is so because these activities directly contribute to the economy’s competitive advantage based on knowledge.

The functioning of the enterprise in a constantly changing environment means that they should make the necessary transformation, meet challenges, thus anticipate and shape the reality. Each company should be the instigator of continuous change, particularly innovative projects which success depends largely on the mobilization of all employees, on creative thinking, action and learning. Strużyński M. writes: “the contemporary processes of globalization create new conditions for flexible and rapid action on the use of various forms of organized business to gain competitive advantage on specific markets” (Strużyński 2003). Globalization can promote and restrict entrepreneurship, especially the individual one. It is written more often, however, that globalization offers the most professional conditions for the great inspiration in the field of entrepreneurship, and it is the source of modern technology and efficient management methods.

This study aims to explore the importance of efficient management of event information generated from group activity in collaborative learning practices for its further use in extracting and providing knowledge on interaction behavior. The essential issue here is how to design a platform that can be used for real, long-term, complex collaborative problem-solving situations and which enables the instructor to both analyze group interaction effectively and provide an adequate support when needed. The achievement of this task first involves the design of a conceptual model that structures and classifies the information generated in a collaborative learning application at several levels of description. This conceptual model is then translated into a computational model that not only allows the efficient management of the knowledge produced by the individual and group activity but also the possibility of exploiting this knowledge further as a meta-cognitive tool for real-time coaching and regulating the collaborative learning process. The computational model becomes the central issue in this contribution while the conceptual model is briefly introduced.

The availability of efficient HBIM workflows could represent a very important change towards a more efficient management of the historical real estate. The present work shows how to obtain accurate and reliable information of heritage buildings through reality capture and 3D modelling to support restoration purposes or knowledge-based applications. Two cases studies metaphorically joint Italy with Argentina. The research article explains the workflows applied at the Palazzo Ferretti at Ancona and the Manzana Histórica de la Universidad National del Litoral, providing a constructive comparison and blending technological and theoretical approaches. In a bottom-up process, the assessment of two cases study validates a workflow allowing the achievement of a useful and proper data enrichment of each HBIM model. Another key aspect is the Level of Development (LOD) evaluation of both models: different ranges and scales are defined in America (100–500) and in Italy (A–G), nevertheless is possible to obtain standard shared procedures, enabling facilitation of HBIM development and diffusion in operating workflows.

Knowledge and the capability to create and utilize knowledge today are consid- ered to be the most important sources of a firm’s sustainable competitive advantage. This paper aims to advance understanding of the knowledge creation of firm in Vietnam by studying Alphanam Company. The case illustrates how knowledge- based management pursues a vision for the future based on ideals that consider the relationships of people in society. The finding shows that the case succeeded because of their flexibility and mobility to keep meeting to the changing needs of the customers or stakeholders. The paper also provided some suggestions for future research to examine knowledge-based management of the companies in a different industry segments and companies originating in other countries

India has gradually evolved as knowledge based economy due to the abundance of capable, flexible and qualified human capital. With the constantly rising influence of globalization, India has immense opportunities to establish its distinctive position in the world. However, there is a need to further develop and empower the human capital to ensure the nations global competitiveness. Despite the empathetic stress laid on education and training in this country, there is still a shortage of skilled manpower to address the mounting needs and demands of the economy. Skill building can be viewed as an instrument to improve the effectiveness and contribution of labor to the overall production. It is as an important ingredient to push the production possibility frontier outward and to take growth rate of the economy to a higher trajectory. This paper focuses on skill development in Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) which contribute nearly 8 percent of the country's GDP, 45 percent of the manufacturing output and 40 percent of the exports. They provide the largest share of employment after agriculture. They are the nurseries for entrepreneurship and innovation. SMEs have been established in almost all-major sectors in the Indian industry. The main assets for any firm, especially small and medium sized enterprises are their human capital. This is even more important in the knowledge based economy, where intangible factors and services are of growing importance. The rapid obsolescence of knowledge is a key factor of the knowledge economy. However, we also know that for a small business it is very difficult to engage staff in education and training in order to update and upgrade their skills within continuous learning approach. Therefore there is a need to innovate new techniques and strategies of skill development to develop human capital in SME's.

Sustainable mobility is becoming a key factor in improving the quality of life of the residents and increasing physical activity (PA) levels. The current situation of sustainable mobility and its analysis is a first step in understanding the factors that would encourage residents to discover and choose alternative modes of travel. The present study examined the factors that encourage the choice of active modes of travel among urban adult population. Walking and cycling were analyzed as the most sustainable forms of urban mobility from the perspective of car and public transport (PT) users. Total of 902 subjects aged 18 years or older were analyzed in the study to assess commuting habits in Kaunas city, Lithuania. The majority (61.1%) of the respondents used a passenger vehicle, 28.2% used PT, and only 13.5% used active modes of travel. The results showed that safer pedestrian crossings, and comfortable paths were the most significant factors that encourage walking. A wider cycling network, and bicycle safety were the most important incentives for the promotion of cycling. Our findings show that the main factors encouraging walking and cycling among car and PT users are similar, however, the individual characteristics that determine the choice of these factors vary significantly.

Rural differentiation processes have formed the backbone of rural studies. Owing to the strength of rural–urban and local–global relationships, the theoretical approaches to rural restructuring in the Anglo-Saxon world and new rurality in Latin America only have a limited capacity to explain contemporary global phenomena of rural spaces. Due to this, transverse theoretical and methodological approaches have emerged to explain social, environmental and spatial (rural) processes. Here, a new approach is proposed called the individual–global field, based on the individual–global binary category to substitute the traditional relevance of the locality–community–globality association This new approach tries to reinvigorate rural geography in a more flexible way, based on minor theory, to adapt to all the phenomena that can occur globally. In any case, various spatial planes are proposed, dominated by specific socioeconomic processes on which the rural individual would move.
