In today's world, cultural exchanges have become more and more frequent because of the economic integration and technological globalization, but people from different countries may have different culture values. China and the United States, as representatives of the East and the West, also have great differences in value orientation. Therefore, understanding the differences between each culture has both theoretical and practical significance for their inter-cultural communication. This paper analyzes the differences between Chinese and American cultural values from five aspects: nature, humanity, time, relationship, and human actions. It will have an important guiding role in eliminating cultural barriers and promoting the development of Chinese and American culture in inter-cultural communication.

Pearl S. Buck’ description on the Republic of China in the 1930s based on her own life experiences in Anhui province and Jiangsu province has created for it a complex but unique image which has been controversial since its birth. Her inclusive and understanding attitude toward cultural exchange between China and the west is very worthy of advocating. Pearl S. Buck was always inclined to her “second motherland”, and took Chinese and Western folk cultural exchanges as her noble mission. She had a quite strong attachment to China in her whole life, while the West misunderstood and excluded Chinese culture, and there were major obstacles to cultural exchanges. Therefore, Pearl Buck and her works were misunderstood and criticized by Chinese readers in a quite long historical period, sharply contrasting her lifelong love for China and her tremendous contributions to the Chinese people. In the global context, we have studied Pearl Buck again, with a view to cherishing her friendship with Chinese people and emphasizing her unique cultural value and practical significance to China.

Israel's disengagement plan is widely hailed by the international community, led by the United States, as a first step toward the final resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the establishment of a viable Palestinian state. This essay is a refutation of that view. After presenting the current situation of Gaza as the result of deliberate Israeli policies of economic integration, deinstitutionalization, and closure, the author demonstrates how provisions of the plan itself preclude the establishment of a viable economy in the Strip. Examining the plan's implications for the West Bank, the author argues that the occupation, far from ending, will actually be consolidated. She concludes with a look at the disengagement within the context of previous agreements, particularly Oslo——all shaped by Israel's overwhelming power——and the steadily shrinking possibilities offered to the Palestinians.

The Love Eterne in China and Titanic in the United States are both very classic love movies in history. The background of the two love stories do have something in common, but due to the characters’ different choices, the end is entirely different. This paper attempts to make a comparison between Chinese value orientation and American ones based on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, so as to find out the cultural differences between the two countries.

Indonesia as a multicultural country has a rich range of performing arts. These assets encourage artists and the government to conduct festivals, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges. However, the programs are not always managed optimally, particularly with regards to curatorial management. This paper presents a study aiming at: (1) identifying the roles of curator in conducting performing art festivals to sustain the culture; (2) investigating challenges faced by the curators in doing their tasks. A descriptive qualitative method in the form of a case study was employed using three instruments, namely field observation, interview, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed to define the principles of curatorial management and its role in conducting performing art festivals. It was revealed during the interviews that there were no standard operational procedures (SOP) yet in doing curatorial tasks, so the curators identified and undertook tasks under their own initiative. Some curators stated that their lack of curatorial knowledge made them lack the confidence to invite the well-known artists. As a result, they tended to invite the artists based on pre-existing familiarity. A further challenge was the lack of official authority which hampered the execution of curat. Brocade has a very important position in the life of ethnic minorities. It is the crystallized value of traditional craft quintessence and is the most characteristic material manifestation of ethnic culture. In particular, the cultural value of brocade is a key element to create the traditional culture of the Vietnamese ethnic groups. At the level of practical life, brocade plays a key role in the clothing associated with daily life. At a higher level, brocade is the characteristic of identifying and distinguishing ethnic groups. Through specific motifs and patterns on costumes made from brocade materials, ethnic nuances are expressed as well as showing the impact of cultural exchanges and transformation between different ethnic groups. The fourth industrial revolution (or industrial revolution 4.0),which is taking place in many developed countries, also has a positive two-way impact and limitations on traditional brocade cultural values of Vietnamese ethnic minorities. The urgent problem is that, how to maintain the unique characteristics of traditional methods and keep the cultural content in products, and apply the achievements of science and technology to shorten the work power and production time? The article analyzes solutions to solve part of the urgent problem that is posed.

This case study examines and illustrates within country regional cultural differences and cross border cultural similarities across four western European countries. Drawing on the data from the World Values Survey (WVS), we refer to the Schwartz Cultural Values Inventory in the survey. The demographic variables of age, gender, education level, marital status and income vary across the regions and hence, have significant effects on the cultural value dimensions across regions. The findings help a better understanding of the homogeneity and heterogeneity of regions withinand across countries. Both researchers and managers will have to justify their sampling methods and generalisations more carefully when drawing conclusions for a whole country. This case study underlines the limited knowledge about regional within country cultural differences, while also illustrating the simplification of treating each country as culturally homogeneous. Cross-country business strategies connecting transnational regional markets based on cultural value characteristics need to take these similarities and differences into account when designating business plans.

Gerald Handerson Thayer (1883–1939) was an artist, writer and naturalist who worked in North and South America, Europe and the West Indies. In the Lesser Antilles, Thayer made substantial contributions to the knowledge and conservation of birds in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Thayer observed and collected birds throughout much of St Vincent and on many of the Grenadines from January 1924 through to December 1925. Although he produced a preliminary manuscript containing interesting distributional notes and which is an early record of the region's ornithology, Thayer never published the results of his work in the islands. Some 413 bird and bird egg specimens have survived from his work in St Vincent and the Grenadines and are now housed in the American Museum of Natural History (New York City) and the Museum of Comparative Zoology (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Four hundred and fifty eight specimens of birds and eggs collected by Gerald and his father, Abbott, from other countries are held in museums in the United States.
