Background. Breast cancer (BC) refers to multifactorial polygenic diseases that occur as a result of the combined interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Glutathione-mediated detoxification is of key importance in ensuring the resistance of body cells to the damaging effect of xenobiotics.Objective: to study the prevalence of deletion polymorphisms of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes and to establish their influence on the formation of cancer risk in patients with BC in the Primorye region (Russia).Materials and methods. The study involved 176 women with BC, aged 23 to 79 years (mean age 48 ± 13 years) and 66 conditionally healthy individuals without cancer. The detection of deletion (null) genotypes of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 was carried out using multiplex PCR followed by analysis of the melting curves of the reaction products.Results. The frequency of GSTT1-0 genotype among BC patients was higher than in the control group (14.77 % versus 6.06 %), significantly exceeding the indicators in the control group by more than 2.5 times (p <0.1), indicating an association between the carriage of the GSTT1-0 genotype and the risk of developing BC. At the same time, the frequencies of the GSTM1-0 genotype in the study groups were comparable; no statistically significant association with the risk of developing BC was found.Conclusions. Homozygous deletion of GSTT1 (GSTT1-0) can potentially be considered as a low-penetrant risk factor for developing BC in the population of Primorye region.

Maintaining an optimal vitamin D concentration reduces the risk of recurrence and extends survival time in patients after breast cancer treatment. Data on vitamin D deficiency among Polish women after breast cancer therapy are limited. Thus, the aim of the study was the analysis of vitamin D status in post-mastectomy patients, considering such factors as seasons, social habits, vitamin D supplementation and its measurements. The study involved 94 women after breast cancer treatment. Serum vitamin D concentration was measured, and a questionnaire, gathering demographic and clinical data regarding cancer, diet, exposure to sun radiation, and knowledge of recommendations on vitamin D supplementation, was delivered twice, in both winter and in summer. The control group consisted of 94 age-matched women with no oncological history. In women after breast cancer treatment, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency was much more frequent than in the general population. Only about half of the patients supplemented vitamin D at the beginning of the study. After the first test and the issuing of recommendations on vitamin D supplementation, the percentage of vitamin D supplemented patients increased by about 30% in study groups. The average dose of supplement also increased. None of the women that were not supplementing vitamin D and were tested again in winter had optimal 25(OH)D concentration. It was concluded that vitamin deficiency is common in women treated for breast cancer. Medical advising about vitamin D supplementation and monitoring of 25(OH)D concentration should be improved.

Abstract Purpose Physical activity (PA) as secondary prevention for breast cancer patients has many positive effects. To evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention involving behavioural and volitional strategies to increase exercise. Materials and Methods The study designed as a randomized controlled trail with 2 follow-up (6 and 12 months after rehabilitation). 1,143 participants were randomized to one of the 4 study groups. Group differences were analysed by multi-level-models. Results After rehab, patients with the combined modules, aftercare-planning (AP) and telephone-support (TS), did exercise 69 min per week (95% CI: 42.85; 94.90) more than the control group. Inactive patients at the beginning of the rehabilitation benefit from the combined intervention. The phone-based intervention alone did not show any effect. Discussion and Conclusion Rehab with the AP module combined with the TS module is associated with patients undertaking more PA.

Objective. To assess the results of treatment involving radiation in combination with magnetotherapy for painful bone metastases in patients with breast cancer.Material and methods. The paper presents data from a prospective study of treatment in 163 patients with bone metastases from breast cancer (a control group included 83 patients; a study group consisted of 80 patients). The metastases were more often localized in the vertebrae. Only radiation therapy was used in the control group and was combined with vortex magnetic field magnetotherapy in the study group.Results. The subjective treatment effect by the presence of pain was more commonly recorded in the study group (100% vs 89.2%; p < 0.05). No significant differences in the treatment effect were found in patients with mild pain. In women with moderate pain, the full treatment effect occurred 1.4 times more frequently in the study group than in the control one; the rate of the partial treatment effect was close in the compared groups, and the patients with no effect were significantly fewer in the study group. In women with severe pain, the full treatment effect was noted in 60.5% and 84.1% in the control and study groups, respectively (p = 0.0163); no effect was recorded in 13.2% in the control group and in 0% in the study group (p = 0.0130); there were 26.6% and 15.9% of cases with a partial effect in the control and study groups, respectively (p = 0.2464). Analysis of the patients’ general status according to the Karnofsky performance scale index showed that the pretreatment index ranged from 50 to 70 points in most patients of the control group. After radiation therapy, the indices improved, rising up to 80 points in one-third of patients. Before the treatment, the index in the study group was the same as in the control one; but after treatment it considerably improved and was even equal to 100 points in 7 patients (3 with mild pain before treatment, 1 with moderate pain, and 3 with severe pain).Conclusion. To improve the results of treating bone metastases, we recommend that radiation therapy be combined with a vortex magnetic field, which enhances the analgesic effect and improves the general condition of the patient and his/her quality of life.

IntroductionType 2 diabetes (T2D) is a multifactorial disease affecting mostly adults older than 40 years. The aim of the study was to examine GST gene polymorphism influence on the risk of T2D, especially in young adults.Research design and methods200 diabetic patients and 221 healthy controls participated in this study. Three GST gene polymorphism have been analyzed: GSTP1 (single-nucleotide polymorphism Ile105Val), homozygous deletion of GSTT1 (null/null) and GSTM1 (null/null), using TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR.ResultsThe distribution of examined polymorphisms was similar in patient group and control group. Statistically significant differences were demonstrated for the combination of GSTP1 Val/Val and GSTT1 null/null genotypes between patients diagnosed before 40 years of age and healthy people (12.5% vs 0.9%, p=0.016). Moreover, all three examined gene polymorphism together (GSTP1 Val/Val, GSTM1nul/null and GSTT1 null/null genotype) was observed in 12.5% of patients diagnosed before 40 years of age and in 0.5% of healthy individuals (p=0.013).ConclusionIn conclusion, the results suggest that GST polymorphism may be one of the risk factors for developing T2D at a younger age than the T2D population average.

Neglected pain in neonates leads to various ill effects and it can be prevented by using simple and safe non-pharmacological pain relieving measures. Pharmacologic agents are not recommended in neonates for acute pain due toinvasive procedures however, administration of 24% oralsucrose solutionis found to be effective. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of 24%oral sucrose in combination with Facilitated tucking during BCG Vaccination through intradermalroute in term neonates which is not done elsewhere. Fifty five healthy term neonates who fulfilled the inclusion criteria such as gestational age above 37 weeks, within 24 hoursof birth age, and neonates delivered only through spontaneous vaginal delivery were included in the study. The study intervention consists of administration of 2 ml of oral 24% sucrose 2 minutes before BCG Vaccination through intradermal route and Facilitated tuckingat the time of vaccination. The primary outcome measure of cumulative NIPS score at 0, 3,5 minuteswas not significant in both the study groups. Whereas there was significant reduction in the level of pain and mean cry time in the neonates of sucrose group. Heart rateand oxygen saturation after intradermal injection also showed significant (p less than 0.001) differenceamong the neonates, who received 24% of oral sucroseand Facilitated tucking than for neonates of control group. Thus oral (24%)sucrose solution given 2 minutes before injection was effective in reducing level of neonatal pain following Intradermal Vaccination. It is a simple, safe and fast acting analgesic and should be considered for minor invasive procedures in term neonates which last for 5-7minutes.

This is an experimental trial to prepare a vaccine from gamma-irradiated Giardia lamblia which is evaluated in experimental animals. The study was conducted from December 2015 to April 2016. The field survey of the parasite was conducted from those patients attending the laboratories of the Alawi Children's Hospital in Rusafa and the Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital in Karkh, through which 1250 stool samples of different age groups were examined. Five groups of mice were used in the study; the first was injected with normal saline and considered as a negative control group, the second was injected with cystic form of non-irradiated Giardia lamblia and considered as a positive control group, whereas the other three groups were injected with gamma irradiated Giardia lamblia at three different doses 10, 15 and 25 rad respectively. Giardia lamblia was primarily cultivated in liver infusion agar for ten days to obtain the active phase. On the sixth day, the cystic phase was purified and standardized to be used in the infection of mice with or without the exposure of gamma rays. Mice showed high sensitivity to parasitic infestation, in the gamma non-irradiated and the irradiated with gamma 10 rad, and 15 rad irradiated groups which was 100%. The results expressed an excystation process of the depleted phases and the release of the feeder phases. The results of the three irradiated groups consisted of histopathological changes of the small, and the rectum by dissection after two weeks of infection, with intestine amputation lesions, as well as ulceration and inflammation of the inflammatory cells represented in small numbers of neutrophil, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. The presence of ulceration and fall of epithelial cells in the intestinal cavity has been shown, and different forms of the parasite have been observed. Mice which was injected with irradiated G lamblia at high dose (25 rad), not show and sensitivity to the challenge infection and no excystation of thy parasite had been done. After 2 wreaks, a comparison was achieved between all study groups in which no histopathological changes were noticed in the mice irradiated with dose of25 rad. After another two weeks, a challenge dose was given (un-attenuated G lamblia) and mice were dissected after another two weeks, no changes on the level of histopathology of intestinal tissue were noticed the results suggested that mice acquire an immunity against the parasite infection.

Objectives: Studying on the variation in CA 72-4 levels of the gastric cancer’s patients before and after 10 days and 30 days surgery treatment. Materials and methods: The studying group included 42 gastric cancer’s patients who were examinated and treated in cancerology service of Hue University Hospital and gastroenterology service of Hue Central Hospital. The control group included 30 healthy normal examinated at Hue University Hospital. The study groups were clinical, endoscopic anatopathologic examination diagnosed with gastric cancer and quantitative levels of CA 72-4 in three times points: before surgerying, after surgerying 10 days and 30 days postoperatively. Rerults: The concentration of CA 72-4 in gastric cancer’s patients was 10.06 ± 16.49 U/ml. Clearly higher than the control group 1.2 ± 0.4 U/ml(p <0.01). The rate increased levels of CA 72-4 in gastric cancer’s patients before surgerying was 27.5% and the control group was 0%. After 10 days of surgery, CA 72-4 level was 5.56 ± 8.55 U/ml; 82.5% of patients have reduced levels of CA 72-4 and 17.5% no changes; there are 0% increased cases. After 30 days of surgery, CA 72-4 level was 3.79 ± 6,52 U/ml. CA 72-4 level 10 days after surgering have decreased significantly compared to before surgery (p < 0.05) and 30 days after surgery have decreased significantly compared to after 10 days (p < 0.05). 30 days postoperatively, 90% patients had reduced levels of CA 72-4, 10% no changes, no patient had increased levels of CA 72-4 and no patient be relapsed after 30 days of treatment. Conclusions: CA 72-4 concentrations before surgerying increased 27.5%, after surgery 10 days and 30 days reduced step by step, no case have increased CA 72-4 levels, no case relapsed after 30 days.

Summary. Introduction: Visual fatigue is caused by changes in the muscular apparatus and retina of the eye and is characterized by deterioration in their functional activity. Along with an increase in work experience and age, workplace visual stress promotes the loss of performance. Known methods of visual fatigue prevention and eye strain relief are ineffective. In this regard, a technique of relieving visual fatigue using scattered low-level red laser radiation was developed and patented. The purpose of our study was a retrospective evaluation of effectiveness of the visual fatigue reduction technique. Materials and methods: We examined two groups of women (PC operators and jewellers) aged 43–57 years experiencing visual stress at work and practicing the method under study over the previous 20 years. The state of daylight vision was assessed by adaptation time. Results: A five-day testing of the method of visual fatigue relief showed stabilization of the light sensitivity threshold throughout the work shift. Over the 20-year period, the female workers had had no complaints of eye strain, burning or lacrimation. Objective studies of the functional state of the organ of sight showed that the light sensitivity threshold during the working day in two study groups was significantly lower than that in the control group with no preventive measures taken. Conclusions: We established that using the technique of eye strain relief based on a two-minute binocular exposure to red laser radiation with the power density of 2×10–7 W/cm2, a 5-day course every six months over the period of 20 years, helped retain retinal activity in terms of light sensitivity, thus preventing visual fatigue.

The heavy metal burden of patients with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been widely discussed [1-5]. Present knowledge suggests that ASD patients, compared to ‘normal’s’ show a greater metal burden, which may be a cause of the ASD pathogenesis, possibly due to a limited detoxification potential. We thus aimed to evaluate if the metal burden of ASD children is due to comprised detoxification ability, and if missing of enzymes such as the glutathione-S-transferases provide an explanation, or if additional factors play a role. Genetically, we noticed a slight difference in the detoxification ability of the ASD group compared to the Control group. In the ASD group, carrier of the genotype GSTT1 null genotype (i.e. the homozygous loss) are 1.7 times more common as in the Control group and the GSTT1 allele is more frequent in the ASD patient collective. These findings are not statistically significant but indicate a trend. In addition, our data indicates that levels of potentially toxic metals in blood and hair of both groups demonstrate a similar immediate and long-term exposure. However, 36% of the ASD group showed signs of zinc deficiency compared to 11% of the Control group and this points towards inefficiency of the Phase I detoxification pathway. More research is needed to explore the role of other elements in the detoxification pathway.

Currently, the urgent task is to search for new biomarkers as a promising tool for early detection and monitoring of breast cancer. The aim of the study was to study the level of cytokines in the saliva of patients with breast cancer. In the case-control study volunteers participated, which were divided into 3 groups: the main (breast cancer, n = 43), the comparison group (fibroadenoma, n = 32) and the control group (conditionally healthy, n = 39). All participants were questioned; biochemical examination of saliva, histological verification of the diagnosis was carried out. Intergroup differences are estimated by a nonparametric criterion. It is shown that in the context of breast cancer, the level of cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-18) is increasing, except for IL-8, the content of which decreases compared to the control group. When the disease progresses by the nature of the dynamics, the parameters are divided into two groups: IL-2, IL-4, IL-18 and IL-6, IL-8, IL-10. For the first group of cytokines, there was a decrease in content during the transition from the early stages to the more common ones. For the second group, when passing from stages T1-2N0M0 to T1-2NjM0, the level of cytokines remains practically constant. In the future, the level of cytokines is observed for stage T3_4N0_2M0, and for IL-2, IL-4 and IL-10, the level of cytokines reaches values corresponding to early stages, whereas for IL-6, IL-8 and IL-18 in the same direction, a significant increase in indicators was noted. Additionally, the IL-6/IL-8 ratio was calculated depending on the tumor size, as well as the presence / absence of metastasis. It is shown that this ratio is statistically significantly increased in the advanced stages of the disease. Particularly interesting is the increase in this ratio in saliva at the initial stages of the disease.
