Nowadays to be competitive in labor market foreign language knowledge and skills are essential. After graduation from LASE students start to work as coaches, sports managers or recreation specialists, and, speaking about their employability, in their jobs foreign language competence is very significant. The aim of the research is to determine the demand among students for optional foreign language study courses, which foreign languages are chosen and studied by the LASE students. In the research, optional foreign language study course examination protocols were analyzed for the last four years, which provide the best indicator of how many students not only chose but also actually completed optional foreign language study courses. The research shows that at LASE the optional study courses of foreign language learning are in great demand in sport science direction. LASE students are aware of advantages of foreign language knowledge and skills in labor market also in sport sector and show their wish to continue developing their foreign language competence while studying at LASE.

Abstract In order to enhance mobility, competitiveness, and opportunities for work, the European Union lists the ability to communicate in a foreign language and to understand another culture as an important objective in their language education policy. Knowledge of a foreign language is also an important objective for many American universities, which require students to study a foreign language as a prerequisite to graduate. Students with documented disabilities affecting the learning of a foreign language or students with poor foreign language learning skills, therefore, pose a significant challenge, since a foreign language requirement may prevent such students from graduating unless universities are willing to make special arrangements such as having students graduate without fulfilling the requirement or letting them take substitution classes. The question of what to do with such students is at the heart of this article. It describes how one mid-sized private university with a two-year language proficiency requirement has approached the problem to ensure that policies are implemented fairly. Rather than pulling students out of the foreign language classroom, the university succeeded in keeping students engaged with foreign language study through advising and mentoring across departments

Abstract The contemporary teaching of foreign languages assumes the development of the ability to use a foreign language in different communication situations. Apart from language competence, also the cultural competence is developed as it is a necessary component of communication. A successful transfer of knowledge and language skills in the process of foreign language learning is determined by a textbook (in addition to other factors). The goal of this article is to analyze the content and assess three Danish textbooks, which were published in Germany in the years 2008-2010. The textbooks are examined in terms of knowledge about Danish life and institutions, the transfer of intercultural competence and the presence of stereotypes. The textbooks were studied based on the list of criteria and it resulted in stating that the textbooks fulfill the objective of providing the knowledge about the country to a great degree. The intercultural component and the issue of stereotypes are dealt with in a different manner.

Being one of the leading coal mining regions in the world, Kuzbass (Russia) demands from its regional higher educational institutions to master a range of competences of the graduates, namely mining engineers. Foreign language competence is considered to be among the key ones. The article reveals the concept of the competence, its relevance for mining engineers. We also analyze existing mobile applications from the point of view of their educational potential and present the results of the experiment conducted to assess effectiveness of mobile applications in mastering foreign language competence of mining engineering undergraduates. Our methods included interviews with students, classroom observations and surveys of students. The results suggest that integrating mobile applications in educational process is likely to have a positive impact on foreign language competence and increase students’ motivation and satisfaction with foreign language learning.

Norwegian children in the 21st century are quite massively exposed to English as an L2, primarily through subtitled television programmes, films and various computer-based activities. The article investigates to what extent this passive exposure influences their basic phonological competence in the L2 by analyzing their ability to actively distinguish between certain phoneme pairs in English which are considered difficult for Norwegian learners, mainly due to interference from the phonemic system in their L1. The data material was collected through 136 recordings of 11-16 year old pupils in ten Norwegian state schools. By comparing the results to similar studies made in Norway 20-35 years ago, at a time when young people's exposure to English was considerably more limited, the article discusses the effects of incidental foreign language acquisition on young people's L2 competence. The discussion is also placed in the light of recent, international research in this field. By critically investigating some of the findings of that research, the article furthermore attempts at problematizing the concept of L2 acquisition by focusing on the distinction between active and passive language competence. The findings indicate that basic L2 phonological competence is in no way automatically enhanced by passive exposure to the language. The article points to the necessity of structured teaching programmes to counterweight the complexity and variations in the L2 input that young people encounter in their media based exposure to the L2.

ABSTRACT  Foreign language is an important component of someone in facing the era of Industry 4.0. The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will have an impact on the creation of a learning media innovation that will facilitate users in the learning process in higher education. Likewise in foreign language learning. Online-based learning has been designed in such a way as to increase learning knowledge and motivation. This study uses a qualitative approach with the survey method. Data and Sources of data in this study are students of foreign language study programs at universities in Indonesia. The results of the study show that students generally always use smartphones and use social media in all their activities. Students use a lot of social media in exploring vocabulary and increasing vocabulary mastery, learning as well as building networks for native speakers (Muttersprachler), and making social media a means of learning by accessing foreign-language songs and interesting media in student foreign language learning. Thus social media can be one of the means of education for students which ends in improving foreign language skills.  Keywords: Social Media, Learning Media, Learning Foreign Languages, Higher Education

With increasing globalization, foreign language skills have become one of the main requirements when applying for a job in leading ICT companies. Due to their ubiquity and multi-functionality, mobile devices allow teachers to provide technology-friendly students with highly dynamic learning contents in line with their lifestyle. Unfortunately, most of the available APPs still support a mainly one-way interaction (teacher to learner or computer-client interaction). The authors have designed an APP based on a highly interactive, ubiquitous and constructive learning approach. The current paper illustrates firstly how the APP has helped learners to get actively involved in their own learning process sharing and assessing their foreign language knowledge. And secondly, how students' logs can be used to automate the assessment of different skills such as the ability to explain terms in a foreign language or to assess definitions created by other game players.

Smartphones can significantly affect the development of foreign languages in two distinct ways. Firstly, online informal learning of languages may result in naturalistic foreign language acquisition while mobile assisted language learning implies the use of smartphones following a conscious decision to engage in language learning activities that would result in the improvement of one's language competence. Based on quantitative and qualitative methodology applied on a sample of undergraduate students in Slovenia, the main objective of this chapter is to explore the use of smartphones for self-regulated English language learning activities beyond the language classroom.

The article examines the current situation of training of future food industry engineers in Ukraine, syllabuses, competences they have to obtain, skills. Communicating skill is considered the number one skills by 94% of employers of Food and Technology market. This skill category includes writing, reading and presenting information, listening and understanding instructions and ability to speak other languages (specifically English). The author offers to implement the innovative system of foreign language learning into educational process of future food industry engineers. The pedagogical system should be based on the principles of continuity, additionality, the combination of heuristic and reproductive methods, interdisciplinary integration, socio-cultural and professional orientation, the variability of group interaction. The techniques which foster the formation of foreign language competence of future food industry engineers are proposed.

Рассматривается понятие и принципы дистанционного обучения. Определяется значение интернет-технологий для изучения иностранного языка. Характеризуются функциональные возможности онлайн-платформы Microsoft Teams. На основе анкетных данных анализируется опыт дистанционного обучения в Тюменском государственном университете в рамках дисциплины «Иностранный язык» на базе MS Teams. Проводится соотношение между инструментами MS Teams и параметрами занятия по иностранному языку. Определяются значимые для изучения иностранного языка функции платформы, а также возникающие трудности. This paper presents the concept, principles of distance education and its relationship with the terms online-learning and e-learning. The author determines the importance of Internet technologies for foreign language learning and the formation of foreign language communicative (often professionally oriented) competence as the main task of this subject. The article gives the reflections of the functionality of the Microsoft Teams online platform to create a unique online learning environment. The issue is addressed by analyzing the survey data on learning foreign languages online via the MS Teams at the University of Tyumen. The specific objective of the study is to juxtapose the MS Teams tools with the parameters of organizing classes in foreign languages such as interactivity, multimedia, the implementation of the learner-centered approach, the teaching and learning materials used, teaching methods and forms, the creation of an authentic environment and the formation of various types of speech activity. In addition, the study defines the most significant MS Teams functions, in particular, storing educational materials, having feedback, video communication (online-meetings), working in teams and channels, MS Teams tests, working with co-editing files etc. The author identifies the difficulties that arise (namely technical, psychological, physiological, methodological difficulties and problems in perceiving information), their possible causes and ways to overcome them. The article ends with conclusions on how MS Teams integrates into the foreign languages learning process.
