One of the motives behind the establishment of the Women's Medical Institute (WMI) in 1897 was the need to radically improve the delivery of obstetric and gynecological care to the population. At that time, qualified medical aid could only be provided by a male doctor, which severely limited the demand for it by women, who were more willing to use the services of midwives and obstetricians-practitioners. The training of female physicians, specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, was the dictate of the times. In the "Regulations" on the establishment of the Institute, its main objective was formulated: "to provide women with a medical education, mainly adapted to the treatment of women's and children's diseases and obstetric activities.

The article outlines the early formative years in the history of the Department of Latin language in the Pediatric Medical Institute and traces the development in approaches to teaching Latin medical terminology, first introduced in 1932. After the abolition of gymnasium education the higher school had to deal with a lack of knowledge of classical languages. At the beginning, teaching Latin as the language of medicine was based on traditional methods of gymnasium education. Archival documents show the subject scope of the department which was in constant search for text material and special means of target training of medical students. Methodological problems of teaching and criteria for evaluation of knowledge were being gradually developed over the years in discussions with teachers at department meetings. The article offers details on the life and achievement of the first head of the department Konstantin P. Avdeev, together with an analysis of his scientific and practical activities. Avdeev’s wide interests and erudition come to the fore in his active work as a lecturer at a number of scientific organizations in Leningrad. Having amassed a unique library of over 7 thousand volumes, he was a famous bibliophile, an expert and a collector of bookplates (ex libris). The depth of his knowledge and a wide range of interests have shaped the values and promoted a creative approach to teaching medical Latin that still remains an important part of teaching the subject to first-year medical students. The article also provides brief information on Nora N. Zabinkova, his successor, whose activity has coincided with qualitative changes in the methods of teaching Latin. These changes were inspired by professor Maxim N. Chernyavsky, the head of the Department of Latin at the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. The Department of Latin in Leningrad Pediatrical Medical Institute was among the few in first introducing and then spreading the new methods of teaching Latin and medical terminology in all medical schools across the country.

The work dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Russian spelling reform deals with the history of the fight for the national cultural values in the epoch of revolutionary destruction. The research focuses on the publications of 1917 in Narodopravstvo weekly that have been staying out of view of the academicians. These are articles “Fate of language” by D. Arkin, “Obligatory illiteracy” by N. Dosekin and “Our language” by B. Zaytsev. These works allow to clarify some specifics of linguistic consciousness of the Russian society, bring additional shades to the picture of cultural and historical process of early 20th c. Realizing the threat of the cultural layer destruction, the authors of the articles oppose the escalation of negative trends in language and suggest the ways to purify Russian speech, bringing back its vitality and strength. The central point of polemics is the spelling reform begun by the Provisional government and then violently enforced by the Bolsheviks. Arguments against new spelling, the most important of them being a gap with centuries-old heritage of the people are considered. The work also includes the review of declarations of writers and creative figures who attempted, following suit to Narodopravstvo, to have the reform cancelled in the first year of the Soviet power. Evaluations of traditional spelling among the Russian émigré and in the modern academic discourse are also presented.

The second half of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century is rightly named «The Golden Age of Russian science». At this time, scientific schools in Russia, including Kazan Emperor’s University and its medical faculty, established at May 14, 1814, were uprising. On the eve of 200-year jubilee of Kazan State Medical University the study of cooperation between Kazan medical scientific schools with medical scientific societies is of major importance. Their shared impact in public healthcare development is the subject of the article. The first medical scientific society established in 1868 was the society of Kazan doctors. Its history can be divided to 3 periods. The first period - 1868 to 1875 - is the establishment of the society as an independent scientific institution. The second - 1877 to 1917 - is the activity affiliated with Kazan University. The third - 1917 to 1931 - activities during the Soviet era, associated with establishment of a novel healthcare system. After the first Russian revolution (1905-1907) the process of creating specialized medical scientific societies, intimately connected to the appropriate medical scientific schools, has started. In 1931, the society of Kazan doctors was reorganized into the Regional association of medical scientific societies. Together with the society of Kazan doctors, there were: a society of natural scientists in Kazan University (1869), Kazan society of military medicine and sanitation (1886), Kazan branch of the Russian society of the healthcare (1880), Kazan society for fighting with children’s mortality and infective diseases (1909), League for fighting tuberculosis (1912) and sexually transmitted diseases (1918), also making an impact in developing medicine and healthcare. Independent medical scientific societies are created in the thirties of the XX century. Kazan medical scientific societies had a great impact in healthcare development in the XIX-XX centuries and promoted the development of Kazan medical scientific schools. Medical faculty of Kazan Emperor’s University, Kazan State Medical Institute and Kazan State Medical University played a great role in foundation and development of medical scientific societies in the Republic of Tatarstan.
