Linear scale has significant impacts on the machine tool accuracy, since the positioning of the linear axes are controlled by its measurement. This paper presents a novel concept of linear scale design which can provide high thermal stability with low cost. This concept applies two different materials: a steel linear scale attached mechanically on a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) tube. Attaching this two materials, the thermal behavior of the steel scale can be mechanically compensated by the CFRP tube when the temperature changes. The potential of the design concept is analyzed based on the experiment results.

BFRP has excellent strength, durability, thermal properties and economic cost. To test seismic performance of short columns strengthened with BFRP. Low cyclic loading test was conducted on one comparative short column and two RC short columns strengthened with BFRP. The test shows that short columns warped by BFRP show excellent failure modes, shear capacity, ductility and energy dissipation. As a new fiber reinforced plastic, BFRP has a good prospect in the area of seismic strengthening for its low cost and comprehensive mechanical properties.

Dehnmessstreifen werden meist eingesetzt, um kurzfristige kraft- und momentenabhängige Dehnungen zu messen. Die thermische Dehnung des Bauteils lässt sich dabei typischerweise nicht zuverlässig messen, da sich der Dehnmessstreifen unter Temperatur ebenfalls verformt. Der hier beschriebene Smart Sensor soll für absolute Verformungsmessung jedoch entsprechend die absolute Dehnung messen, das heißt sowohl mechanische als auch thermische Dehnung. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt den Aufbau und die Validierung eines kostengünstig herstellbaren Bluetooth-Dehnungssensors, bei dem als temperaturinvariante Referenz ein Bauteil aus kohlefaserverstärktem Kunststoff genutzt wird. Strain gauges are mostly used to measure short-term force and torque-dependent strain. Thereby the thermal strain of the component is mostly a disturbing effect. The following Smart Sensor is explicitly intended to measure the absolute strain for absolute deformation measurements. The article describes the design and validation of a bluetooth strain sensor that can be manufactured at low cost using a carbon fiber reinforced plastic component as a temperature-invariant reference.

The paper discusses the results of an experimental investigation carried out on reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear by externally bonded fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets. The study is devoted to analyze the role that the transverse steel reinforcement and the beam slenderness ratio could play on the resistant mechanism of RC beams strengthened in shear by FRP composites. The results are summarized and analyzed in detail in the paper in terms of shear capacity, cracking pattern and shear resisting contribution of FRP.

This paper investigates the working performance of reinforcement concrete (RC) beams strengthened by Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) with different anchoring under bending moment, based on the structural stressing state theory. The measured strain values of concrete and Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) sheet are modeled as generalized strain energy density (GSED), to characterize the RC beams’ stressing state. Then the Mann–Kendall (M–K) criterion is applied to distinguish the characteristic loads of structural stressing state from the curve, updating the definition of structural failure load. In addition, for tested specimens with middle anchorage and end anchorage, the torsion applied on the anchoring device and the deformation width of anchoring device are respectively set parameters to analyze their effects on the reinforcement performance of CFRP sheet through comparing the strain distribution pattern of CFRP. Finally, in order to further explore the strain distribution of the cross-section and analyze the stressing-state characteristics of the RC beam, the numerical shape function (NSF) method is proposed to reasonably expand the limited strain data. The research results provide a new angle of view to conduct structural analysis and a reference to the improvement of reinforcement effect of CFRP.

In this paper, the concept of scalability for actuators is introduced and explored, which is the capability to freely change the output characteristics on demand: displacement and force for a linear actuator, angular position and torque for a rotational actuator. This change can either be used to obtain power improvement (with a constant scale factor), or to improve the usability of a robotic system according to variable conditions (with a variable scale factor). Some advantages of a scalable design include the ability to adapt to changing environments, variable resolution of step size, ability to produce designs that are adequate for restricted spaces or that require strict energy efficiency, and intrinsically safe systems. Current approaches for scalability in actuators have shortcomings: the method to achieve scalability is complex, so obtaining a variable scaling factor is challenging, or they cannot scale both output characteristics simultaneously. Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire-based actuators can overcome these limitations, because its two output characteristics, displacement and force, are physically independent from each other. In this paper we present a novel design concept for linear scalable actuators that overcome SMA design and scalability limitations by using a variable number of SMA wires mechanically in parallel, immersed in a liquid that transmits heat from a separate heat source (wet activation). In this concept, more wires increase the maximum attainable force, and longer wires increase the maximum displacement. Prototypes with different number of SMA wires were constructed and tested in isometric experiments to determine force vs. temperature behavior and time response. The heat-transmitting liquid was either static or flowing using pumps. Scalability was achieved with a simple method in all tested prototypes with a linear correlation of maximum force to number of SMA wires. Flowing heat transmission achieved higher actuation bandwidth.

Recently, with the increase in awareness about a clean environment worldwide, fuel efficiency standards are being strengthened in accordance with exhaust gas regulations. In the automotive industry, various studies are ongoing on vehicle body weight reduction to improve fuel efficiency. This study aims to reduce vehicle weight by replacing the existing steel reinforcements in an automobile center pillar with a composite reinforcement. Composite materials are suitable for weight reduction because of their higher specific strength and stiffness compared to existing steel materials; however, one of the disadvantages is their high material cost. Therefore, a hybrid molding method that simultaneously performs compression and injection was proposed to reduce both process time and production cost. To replace existing steel reinforcements with composite materials, various reinforcement shapes were designed using a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic patch and glass fiber-reinforced plastic ribs. Structural analyses confirmed that, using these composite reinforcements, the same or a higher specific stiffness was achieved compared to the that of an existing center pillar using steel reinforcements. The composite reinforcements resulted in a 67.37% weight reduction compared to the steel reinforcements. In addition, a hybrid mold was designed and manufactured to implement the hybrid process.
