Background: Pregnancy and childbirth are important events in the life of a woman. Life with the new born can be very rewarding but it can be very tough for some women. This phase of life brings about many hormonals, physical and emotional changes in the women during childbirth. Aims and objectives were to find out the prevalence and risk factors of post-partum depression (PPD) in urban area of Indore district and to assess the socio demographic profile of study populationMethods: The study was a cross sectional community-based study, conducted on women who had delivered within a period of 6 weeks to 3 months. 100 women from urban area were selected from Indore district through simple random sampling. Informed consent in written was taken from the mothers. The study tool was pre designed semi structured questionnaire and Edinburgh post-natal depression scale (EPDS) scale, data were entered in excel sheet and analyzed using SPSS software, appropriate statistical test were applied wherever necessary. Results: In our study it was found that prevalence of PPD in urban Indore was 23%. We found that age at the time of marriage below 18 years, mode of delivery (LSCS), initiation of breast feeding (after 1 hour) and birth weight of baby less than 2.5 kg had a strong association with PPD. In our study 58% had normal vaginal delivery and 42% had LSCS in urban area. In urban areas 36% gave a history of birth weight of babies <2.5 kg.Conclusions: Symptoms of PPD were significantly high in urban Indore mothers and they were strongly associated with risk factors.

Background: The aim is to study the prevalence of prelabour rupture of the membranes (PROM), to identify risk factors, mode of delivery, and its maternal and fetal effects. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Government Head Quarters Hospital, Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, with a duration of 6months (January 2020 – June 2020). The study was conducted on 800 pregnant women between 28-42 weeks of gestational age consecutively and those who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken into study. Results: The prevalence of PROM was 27.9% (tPROM 24.6% and PPROM 3.2%). Most of the cases were primigravida (74%). Risk factors associated with PROM were low socioeconomic state (63.2%), urinary tract infection (UTI) (7.2%), vaginal infections (5.8%), and previous history of PROM (3.1%). Most of the patients were delivered by lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) (55.2%), normal vaginal delivery (39.9%) and forceps delivery (4.9%). The most common indication for LSCS was fetal distress (43.9%). Misoprostol induction was associated with more failed induction (2 times) than syntocinon. Maternal complications were post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) (8%), fever (6.7%), wound infection (6.2%), manual removal of placenta (4.4%), and puerperal sepsis (0.9%). Neonatal complications were neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions (14%), respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) (11%), neonatal sepsis (2.6%). Maternal (54.5%) and neonatal (90%) morbidity were more in prolonged PROM >24 hours. Conclusions: Antenatal screening for genitourinary infections especially in cases of the previous history of abortions and PROM should be done. Oxytocin is the preferred method of induction over misoprostol in this study. Active management in term PROM cases can reduce the cesarean section rate.

Post partum depression can be experienced by postpartum mothers from 2 weeks to 1 year after giving birth. This condition, if detected early and can be handled properly, will be able to prevent further problems. Identification of depressive symptoms and risk factors for post partum depression is important. The Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) questionnaire has been very commonly used worldwide to detect post partum depression with a sensitivity level of 80% and a specificity of 84.4%. This study aims to calculate the prevalence of post partum depression events in Denpasar City in 2019, determine the risk factors associated with the incidence of post partum depression and analyze the relationship between risk factors found. This research is an observational research with cross sectional design. The study was conducted in 3 (three) inpatient puskesmas, namely Puskesmas I Denpasar Timur, IV Denpasar Selatan and II Denpasar Barat. Respondents numbered 67 people. The instruments used were EPDS questionnaire, factor questionnaire related to pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium, and social  factor questionnaire. Univariate analysis by calculating proportions, bivariate analysis using the Chi Square test and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. The results showed the prevalence of post partum depression was 25.4%. Risk factors significantly related to the incidence of post partum depression include: type of family, nutrition for infants and family support. While risk factors for age, education, occupation, family income, parity, pregnancy status, complications of childbirth and sex of the baby did not show a significant relationship. Logistic regression results show that nutrition for infants has the strongest association with the incidence of post partum depression.

Abstract Background Postpartum depression (PPD) occurs in 10-15% of deliveries worldwide. Unfortunately there is a dearth of local studies on its exact prevalence. Method This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for PPD among postpartum patients at a tertiary government hospital using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale-Filipino Translation (EPDS-F), a 10-point questionnaire translated into Filipino and previously validated. Four hundred patients within 8 weeks postpartum were recruited and their EPDS-F scores and sociodemographic, medical and personal history, and delivery and perinatal outcome data were obtained. Results The overall prevalence of PPD was 14.5%, which is within the known worldwide prevalence. Among those that had family incomes below PhP10,000, the proportion that had high EPDS-F scores was 68.8%, while those that had low EPDS-F scores was 48.8% (significant at p=0.001). Among those that finished below tertiary education, the proportion that had high EPDS-F scores was 81%, while those that had low EPDS-F scores was 59.9% (significant at p=0.002). Among those who delivered vaginally, 62.1% had high EPDS-F scores vs 44.2% low EPDS-F (p=0.03). Of those that had epidural anesthesia (106 or 26.5%), 44.8% had high EPDS scores and 26.0% had low EPDS-F scores (p=0.04). Regression analysis showed that having an abdominal delivery is correlated with a lower EPDS-F score by 0.87% by logistic regression and 0.46 % by probit regression. Having a higher educational attainment and monthly income are associated with a lower EPDS-F score by regression analysis. Conclusions The prevalence may be skewed because a tertiary government institution caters to delicate pregnancies and those in low socioeconomic brackets. It may be worthwhile to compare responses from a public versus a private institution, also urban versus rural areas. It would be interesting also to evaluate the mode of delivery variable and how exactly it correlates with the development of postpartum depression.

Background: Postpartum Depression is a serious issue that can lead to irreversible disasters if not timely recognized and diagnosed. There are various modes of delivery; which may contribute towards physical and mental trauma. Methods: It was a prospective descriptive cross- sectional study carried out to evaluate the alliance of postnatal depression with different modes of delivery i.e. vaginal or lower segment caesarean section. The study was conducted at Ziauddin University Hospital. A sample size of 200 was taken. It was carried out from June 2019 to December 2019. A Performa was designed that questioned about different socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors for post-natal depression (PND). Edinburg Post-Natal Depression Scale (EPNDS) was used for authenticated identification of women with depression in purpeurium. Results: Out of the total sample of 200 women, 100 were taken from the spontaneous vaginal delivery group and 100 from cesarean section group. Mean age was 21-34 years. It was noticed that 60% women who underwent cesarean section became a victim of depression and 40% women who had a normal vaginal delivery were identified to have post natal depression. Conclusion: The study identifies cesarean section to be one of the culprits of postnatal depression as compared to woman undergoing spontaneous vaginal delivery.  There is an exponential rise in the frequency of performing unexplained cesarean sections that would also boost up the graphs of postnatal depression; hence there is a dire need to instruct women to follow up postnatal so that they can be evaluated for post partum depression.

Newborn baby should be assessed immediately soon after the birth and the APGAR (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) score is the most commonly used, simple and most effective method of immediate newborn assessment. The aim of the study was to compare the newborn APGAR score on first and fifth minute in two different mode of delivery; Normal Vaginal delivery (NVD) and Cesarean Delivery (CD) and its contributing factors. A cross-sectional study design with comparative research approach was adopted to conduct the research. Total 200 singleton babies (100 NVD and 100 CD) were selected and APGAR score was checked in the first and fifth minutes from baby’s birth record. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that 88 and 95 percentage of neonatal APGAR scores in 1st and 5th minutes were more than seven, respectively. There were no significant statistical differences between APGAR score of 1st and 5th minutes in two methods of delivery (t=0.067 and 0.066 on 1st minute and 5th minute respectively, p>0.05). However, premature newborns, low birth weight, mother’s age and weight of mother, no of parity has effect on APGAR score. The study findings concluded that not the method of delivery has any effect on the low Apgar score of babies on birth but the factors such as prematurity, maternal age, mother’s weight, no of parity, low birth weight has significant association on low APGAR score of babies. Background: Pregnancy and childbirth are two most important life-changing events. Post-partum depression can affect mother and has a wide spectrum of presentation depending upon various social factors. Studies suggest that the incidence of postnatal depression among women of high social strata is 13-19% while the incidence is 11-42% among women with limited social support. The present study aims to study postnatal depression and its causes in a postnatal mother in all the aspects of social, physical, cultural and psychiatric grounds in the Indian scenario with the help of the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS).Methods: From 1st July 2019 to 31st December 2019, a total 300 postnatal women between 1 to 6 weeks of the postpartum period participated and during their stay in the hospital responded to EPDS. The study was purposive sampling, and full consent of the study subjects was taken before the start of the study. Results: In this study, we found 20.1% of a woman affected by post-partum in South India. The higher percentage of severe depression was seen in the primary gravida (20%). The risk factors such as availability of postnatal care (with NICU admission), the woman with medical complications, late childbirth or delayed childbirth after marriage, multiparity, delivery via caesarean and nuclear family showed significant relationship (p<0.005) with depression. Conclusions: The present study, with a Post-natal depression of 20.1% along with the enumerated risk factors, suggest that the causes for postpartum depression (PPD) among working Indian woman, reflect a change to an urban-centric lifestyle. Further evaluation of these risk factors needs to be made and a routine screening of Postpartum depression (PPD) can help in improving maternal and child health.

Background: Eclampsia is a multisystem disorder that may lead to deterioration of maternal condition, hypoxia and acidosis of fetus. Objective was to evaluate the risk factors associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcome in patients with eclampsia. Methods: All patients with eclampsia were enrolled after informed consent from February 2013 to February 2014. Questions as per per-forma were asked to the patients and attendants about antenatal visits, parity, number of episodes of seizures, duration from onset of seizure to magnesium sulfate, then the patients were followed as per the hospital protocol, the mode of delivery, outcome of baby, post partum maternal condition and mortality were then noted. Results: Fifty-two patients with eclampsia were admitted in the study period. Thirty-one patients required mechanical ventilator support. Twenty-five (48.07%) patients were delivered by emergency cesarean section and 30(57.6%) babies were low birth weight and there were 11(21.1%) stillbirths. There was one maternal mortality and 45(86.5%) patients were discharged with improvement but 6(11.5%) patients had neurological impairment. Mortality was significantly related with number of seizure episodes and time interval between seizure onset and administration of magnesium sulphate. Conclusions: Early detection of hypertension and management with magnesium sulphate for eclampsia can help to minimize the maternal and fetal adverse outcomes. Keywords: Eclampsia; maternal mortality; risk factors.

Introduction. Teenage pregnancy is a national health priority. Having to deal with pregnancy during adolescence can cause the mother, at an already vulnerable age, to doubt her maternal capacity to cope with a challenge of this magnitude. The teenage mother’s assessment of her maternal self-efficacy is associated with her performance, in other words, the way she relates and responds to the needs of her infant, which has major implications for the latter’s development. Objective. To study the association between personal (depressive symptoms, self-esteem) and environmental characteristics (social support, partner satisfaction) and those of the infant (problems with infant care, the infants’s temperament) and the perception of maternal self-efficacy (PME) in adolescent mothers. Method. Cross-sectional study. The following instruments were applied: Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Post-partum Depression Predictors Inventory-Revised (PDPI-R), and Maternal Efficacy Questionnaire to 120 mothers under 20 during the first six months postpartum. Bivariate lineal regression and hierarchical linear regression analyses were used for the data analysis. Results. When adjusting for other variables, symptoms of depression and difficult infant temperament were associated with lower PME. Social support was only associated with increased PME in the bivariate analysis. Discussion and conclusion. These findings contribute to the limited literature on the subject and provide elements for designing strategies to improve adolescent mothers’ PME to encourage behaviors that are more relevant and sensitive to infants’ physical and emotional needs.
