Background:In general students who get into health sciences experience transition from home and family care to university and hostel life, which in turn exerts lot of stress which affects their dietary pattern. Many life style factors and poor eating habits acquired during this period can lead to serious diseases later in life.Methods:The present study was a questionnaire based cross-sectional study conducted to find out the dietary pattern among the students of health sciences and to know their health and morbidity status.Results:The study included 175 students of Nitte University with 93 Medical, 49 Dental, 33 nursing students. 75% of students who ate outside almost daily had stomach upsets regularly and it was much less (46.8%) among those who had a frequency of not more than once a week. It was seen that 87 (49.71%) students skipped breakfast, 14 (8%) students skipped lunch, 14 (8%) students skipped dinner. 5.7% of subjects were underweight, 85.2% of subjects had a normal BMI and 9.1% were overweight.Conclusions:Hereby we recommend that a nutritional health education intervention aimed at improving the dietary habits of students is the need of the hour.

There is increasing evidence that diet can mitigate fatigue. The objective of this study was to assess the associations between dietary habits and sleep-related impairment (SRI) in a cohort of community physicians. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 245 physicians who had completed a wellness survey in March 2016 (98% response rate). Three dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis: plant based, high protein, and high saturated fat and sugar. In the adjusted analysis, every SD increase in the plant-based dietary pattern score was associated with a 0.71-point decrease ( β = −0.72; SE = 0.32; P = .027; 95% CI = −1.35 to −0.08) in the SRI score, and every SD increase in the high saturated fat and sugar dietary pattern score was associated with a 0.77-point increase ( β = 0.77; SE = 0.32; P = .015; 95% CI = 0.15 to 1.39) in the SRI score. There were no associations between high protein diets and SRI scores. Physicians adhering to diets that are high in plant-based foods and low in saturated fat and added sugars had less SRI. Physicians currently face significant barriers to maintaining a healthy diet. This study highlights the potential role of workplace nutrition on SRI and work performance of physicians.

Abstract Background The clinical clerkship is a crucial stage in nursing training and the dissatisfaction at this stage can lead to nursing quit in the future. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship among personality dimensions, spirituality, coping strategies and clinical clerkship satisfaction in intern nursing students. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. Considering any medical university in Iran as a single cluster, five medical universities, were initially selected. 65 nursing students were randomly selected from each university and from 325 distributed questionnaires, 293 were valid. All participants were provided with standard questionnaires regarding personality dimensions (NEO_FFI), spirituality, coping strategies (WoCQ), and satisfaction with clinical clerkship. Data analyzed using Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple regression Results The results showed that spirituality, problem-focused coping and extraversion played an important role in predicting satisfaction with clinical clerkship among intern nursing students. Regression analysis represented that openness, extraversion, and spirituality could significantly predict problem-based coping style in intern nursing students. However, personality dimensions and spirituality were not good predictors for emotion-focused coping among intern nursing students. Conclusion Personality dimensions, coping strategies and spirituality, in particular, are good predictors of clinical clerkship satisfaction among intern nursing students.

This study aimed to describe dietary habits of Syrian adolescents attending secondary schools in Damascus and the surrounding areas. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on 3507 students in 2001. A stratified, 2-stage r and om cluster sample was used to sample the students. The consumption pattern of food items during the previous week was described. More than 50% of the students said that they had not consumed green vegetables and more than 35% had not consumed meat. More than 35% said that they consumed cheese and milk at least once a day. Only 11.8% consumed fruit 3 times or more daily. Potential determinants of the pattern of food consumption were analyzed. Weight control practices and other eating habits were also described

The coronavirus disease is still spreading in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with subsequent lockdowns and social distancing measures being enforced by the government. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of the lockdown on eating habits and lifestyle behaviors among residents of the UAE. A cross-sectional study among adults in the UAE was conducted using an online questionnaire between April and May 2020. A total of 1012 subjects participated in the study. During the pandemic, 31% reported weight gain and 72.2% had less than eight cups of water per day. Furthermore, the dietary habits of the participants were distanced from the Mediterranean diet principles and closer to “unhealthy” dietary patterns. Moreover, 38.5% did not engage in physical activity and 36.2% spent over five hours per day on screens for entertainment. A significantly higher percentage of participants reported physical exhaustion, emotional exhaustion, irritability, and tension “all the time” during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic (p < 0.001). Sleep disturbances were prevalent among 60.8% of the participants during the pandemic. Although lockdowns are an important safety measure to protect public health, results indicate that they might cause a variety of lifestyle changes, physical inactivity, and psychological problems among adults in the UAE.

Background: During the past few years there was a western influence in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and as a result of it the eating habits among the male college students had rapidly changed which also increased the prevalence rate of overweight and obesity. Therefore the objectives of the study were 1) To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a sample of male college students in Abha, Saudi Arabia. 2) To determine the relationship between the Student’s body weight and their eating habits. Methods: A cross-Sectional study was done among 445 male college students from king Khalid University, Abha Saudi Arabia. Study participants were selected randomly and self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data was analyzed by using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS Inc. version 16.) and expressed in percentages. Results: The study found that 28% and 20 % of students were overweight and obese. Daily intake of snacks and lack of consumption of vegetable and fruits were found to be the common dietary habits among the male college students. Majority of the students were aware about the balanced nutrition and it was positively correlated with the normal body weight. Conclusions: The current study suggest involvement of college Administration and family members will further reduce the burden of overweight and obesity among college students in the nation.

Abstract Background: Syrian eating habits are trending towards westernized patterns that are high in carbohydrates, fats, and meat. This accompanied by an increasingly sedentary lifestyle has affected young adults’ dietary habits. As a consequence, obesity and overweight young adults are significantly increasing in prevalence. This study aims to assess the pattern of eating habits and their relation with psychosocial factors among university students. The objective of this study is to identify factors associated with eating habits and psychological factors.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among Syrian Private University students using a self-administrated questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 3 sections: socio-demographic characteristics, eating habits, and psychosocial factors. Hierarchical multivariate linear regression was used to obtain factors associated significantly with eating habit score and psychological factors.Results: Of 728 students included in the study 398 (54.7%) were females. Overweight and obese participants represented 154 (21.4%) and 49 (6.8%) respectively. 316 (43.4%) were smokers and 135 (18.5%) drank alcohol. Only 233 (32%) and 306 (42%) had meals and breakfast regularly respectively. Participants’ mean total of eating habits was 5.96 (SD ± 1.95). Multivariate analysis revealed smoking, exercising, living with family, and “eat because of feeling happy” were factors significantly associated with eating habits score and psychological factors (p<0.05). Conclusions: Most of the students demonstrated healthy eating habits. The identified socio-demographic factors associated with eating habits can be used to provide lifestyle modification advice via health promotion programs targeted at these specific groups.
