Conducts of by-elections in recent times have been fraught with a lot of security challenges. This has been as a result of the violence that characterized the conduct of by-elections in recent times in Ghana. Violence during by-elections in Ghana plays a vital role in securing election victories for political parties. In all the by-elections characterized by violence in Ghana, they were won by parties that were accused of inciting the violence. The main tenets of election violence as identified by the paper included, actors, motives, timing, consequences, and patterns. The paper adopted the content analysis method in its investigation of the two violent by-elections in Ghana. The paper revealed that there was a correlation between violence during by-elections and victories of incumbent parties. This was because, in the two by-elections understudy, those accused of starting the violence and using national security operatives won the elections. The paper also found out that by-election violence impacted negatively on Ghana’s democratic maturity in several ways, such as; low voter turnout, weakening of democratic foundation and breeding an atmosphere of insecurity. Finally, the paper also revealed that political parties especially those in government resort to violence during by-elections in Ghana because they fear losing it will mean the government was underperforming as argued out by Feigert and Norris and also because they want to add to their tally in parliament.

Four bands of ERTS imagery were analyzed under a stereoscope by pairing paper prints of bands 4, 5, 6 and 7 in an attempt to apply a conventional air-photo analysis method for extraction of basic information on physical characteristics of the land and its biotic components. The overview of an extensive land area at the 1:1,000,000 scale provides an adequate base for a general stratification of the land surface into broad physiographic landscapes (mountains, foothills, uplands, plains and lowland) and for recognition of major geomorphic processes from the analysis of drainage pattern, vegetation and erosional features. Some limitations of the ERTS imagery for a detailed mapping of landforms are illustrated by a comparison of conventional small-scale photographs and a section of ERTS imagery enlarged to the same scale.

This paper considers the hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) fishery of southern Bangladesh as a case study regarding governance and power dynamics at play in a small-scale fishery, and the relevance of these for the sustainable management of coastal fisheries. Qualitative methods, involving in-depth individual interviews (n = 128) and focus group discussions (n = 8) with key stakeholders in the hilsa fishery, were used to capture multiple perspectives on governance from those in different positions in the relative power structures studied, while facilitating insightful discussions and reflections. The analysis here is based on a power cube framework along three power dimensions (levels, spaces, and forms) in Bangladesh’s hilsa fishery. The study displays an imbalance in the present hilsa governance structure, with some stakeholders exercising more power than others, sidelining small-scale fishers, and encouraging increasing illegal fishing levels that ultimately harm both the fisheries and those dependent on them. To overcome this, we propose a co-management system that can play a vital role in equalizing power asymmetry among hilsa fishery stakeholders and ensure effective hilsa fishery governance. Our results suggest that recognizing analyzed power dynamics has substantial implications for the planning and implementation of such co-management and the long-term sustainability of the hilsa fishery.

Small-scale distributed generation systems are expected to play a vital role in future energy supplies. Subsequently, power generation using micro-gas turbine (MGT) is getting more and more attention. In particular, externally fired micro-gas turbine (EFMGT) is preferred among small-scale distributed generators, mainly due to high fuel flexibility, high overall efficiency, environmental benefits, and low maintenance requirement. The goal of this work is to evaluate the performance of an EFMGT-based standalone polygeneration system with the help of computational simulation studies. The main focus of this work is to develop a dynamic model for an EFMGT. The dynamic model is accomplished by merging a thermodynamic model with a mechanical model of the rotor and a transfer function based control system model. The developed model is suitable for analyzing system performance particularly from thermodynamic and control point of view. Simple models for other components of the polygeneration systems, electrical and thermal loads, membrane distillation unit, and electrical and thermal storage, are also developed and integrated with the EFMGT model. The modeling of the entire polygeneration system is implemented and simulated in matlab/simulink environment. Available operating data from test runs of both the laboratory setups are used in this work for further analysis and validation of the developed model.

Taking the nitrogen monitoring data of two sites S1 and S2 in the period 1988-2003 in Baihe River lying Miyun reservoir stream watershed as a case, Fourier and Wavelet analysis were adopted to explore and compare the periodic patterns and temporal pattern characteristics of the two sites. The results showed that the periodic patterns of two sites were discovered using Fourier analysis. The site S1 had a period of two years, while the site S2 had no significant periodic patterns. The temporal pattern characteristics at different scales were obtained through wavelet analysis, which were at small scale for the site S1, while at moderate and small scales for the site S2. The Fourier and wavelet analysis method can both be used in the study of surface water quality temporal change pattern, the first is a coarse method and the latter is a more detailed method for analyzing surface water quality temporal pattern characteristics.

Persons with Disability (PWDs) comprise one billion or fifteen percent (15%) of the world's total population. Adequacy of social services plays a vital role in realizing the rights and welfare of the PWDs. This includes providing them with an adequate standard of living and a basic level of income security that will help reduce their levels of poverty and vulnerability. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is the primary government agency mandated to develop and coordinate social protection and poverty reduction solutions for and with the poor, vulnerable, and disadvantaged. Hence, this study explored how adequate are the social services under the five elements: health, education, livelihood, social aspect, and empowerment provided by the CSWD Office of a second-class city in Negros Occidental. It also explored the challenges faced by the respondents in availing of the social services and their recommendations to overcome those challenges.

This paper explores the present status and utilization trends of the mineral resources in Nepal. It is mainly due to mineral resources are playing vital role in the development of economy, industry and gross domestic products (GDP). However, the mineral resources are unevenly distributed across the geographical regions. In addition, some minerals are deposited in a particular place on a small scale. As a result, Nepal has not been able to mobilize mineral resources due to lack of detailed study. It requires rigorous study to identify the amount and quantity of mineral deposits in a particular area that can be dug out for commercial purpose. The data were mainly generated from a review of various materials and concludes that the government should give high priority to explore, excavate the mineral resources. It requires clear policy efforts and provisions regarding roles and responsibilities towards the proper mobilization of mineral resources through both private and public sectors. The commercial extraction of mineral resources helps to import substitution, industrial development, jobs creation and revenue collection.
