Background: The environmental contamination with Toxocara canis eggs increases the risk of dissemination and transmission of the parasite in dogs and paratenic hosts such as humans. We aimed to evaluate different disinfectants to compare their effect on T. canis eggs. Methods: For its realization, 850 embryonated eggs were obtained, which were suspended in a solution of 5% formaldehyde and distilled water in Eppendorf tubes. In the tubes containing the 850 embryonated eggs, researchers was added 0.5 mL of each solution (enzymatic solution, sodium hypochlorite, iodopovidone, quaternary of ammonium, benzalkonium chloride, and super oxidation solution). After mixing, an aliquot was taken, observed under the microscope, and the number of broken eggs counted at different times to find the most effective ovicidal moment. Results: The enzymatic disinfectant present a significant difference (P = 0.05) with 276.06 broken eggs followed by ammonium with 105.20 broken eggs. After 10 min, the ammonium solution was the one that showed a significant difference of 50.50 hatched eggs, followed by the enzymatic 26.80 and hypochlorite 25.00 treatments. After 20 min, the enzymatic solution treatment showed a significant difference with the other solutions showing an increase of 98.80 broken eggs. In the 30 and 40-min times, only the enzymatic treatment showed a significant difference of 334.10 and 381.70 of broken eggs respectively. Conclusion: The enzymatic solution has the greatest ovicidal effect against the eggs of T. canis to present a greater number of broken eggs in a given time between 20 and 40 minutes.

Toxocariasis is a parasitic zoonosis caused by the nematode Toxocara canis, and less frequently Toxocara cati, whose final hosts are the dog and cat, respectively. It is acquired by the ingestion of embryonated parasite eggs; the ingestion of meat from animals carrying cystic larvae plays a central role in this disease. The study was conducted in Ayapango, Mexico. Ninety-two sheep where used, of which 72 were females and 20 males. The total prevalence of anti-Toxocara antibodies was 15.21% (14/92), ranging from 17.24% in the one to six months age group to 14.28% in the group older sheep six months, with a higher percentage in females (19.44%) compared to males (5.0%), with a significant difference between positive males and females older than six months of age (Chi-square test = 4.22, P < 0.05). The prevalence of anti-Toxocara antibodies in sheep suggests that a high number of animals are infected with Toxocara spp. The consumption of meat from paratenic hosts, including sheep, is considered a means of transmission of toxocariasis to humans.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a difference could be demonstrated between crystalline insulin extracted from normal human pancreas, and crystalline insulin extracted from bovine and porcine pancreas. Using Hales & Randle's (1963) immunoassay no immunological differences could be demonstrated between human and pig insulin. On the other hand, a significant difference was found, between pig and ox insulin. An attempt was also made to determine whether an immunological difference could be demonstrated between crystalline pig insulin and crystalline human insulin from non diabetic subjects on the one hand and endogenous, circulating insulin from normal subjects, obese subjects and diabetic subjects on the other. No such difference was found. From these experiments it is concluded that endogenous insulin in normal, obese and diabetic human sera is immunologically identical with human, crystalline insulin from non diabetic subjects and crystalline pig insulin.

As a prelude to an analysis of the dependence of muscle protein synthesis on aminoacyl tRNA's, we have investigated the rates of seryl-tRNA formation, in vitro, by aminoacylating systems isolated from 11-, 14-, and 17-day chick embryonic muscle. The results show that the combination of 14-day tRNA and 14-day aminoacyl synthetase is the most efficient in seryl-tRNA formation. We have also studied the qualitative and quantitative changes in seryl-tRNA prepared from 11-, 14-, and 17-day embryonic chick muscle by chromatography of seryl-tRNA on benzoylated DEAE-cellulose columns. The results show that, although there are no qualitative differences in the chromatographic patterns of seryl-tRNA from the different ages, there are significant quantitative differences between the patterns for 11-day and 17-day seryl-tRNA on the one hand, and the pattern for 14-day seryl-tRNA on the other.

In the period from January 2001 to December 2005, a total of 6,904 slaughtered cattle originating from the territory of the region of Jablanica were examined at the Mesokombinat AD abattoir. The Trematoda Fasciola hepatica was found in 429 cattle (6.21%). A total of 2,150 kg livers were condemned due to the presence of the liver fluke. A comparison of cattle with bovine fasciolosis according to the years yielded a very significant difference (p<0.01) between the year 2003 (10.02) and the year 2002 (9.97), on the one side, in comparison with the years 2001 (5.14), 2004 (3.37), and 2005 (5.08), on the other side. A significant difference (p<0.05) was also established in the year 2004 (3.37) in comparison with the years 2001 (5.14) and 2005 (5.08). After analyzing the significance of the differences between the infected cattle according to the seasons, a very significant difference (p<0.01) was established between the summer (7.23) and the winter (4.74) periods. A significant difference (p<0.05) was also established between the autumn (6.49) and the winter periods. The amount of precipitation was directly proportionate to the percentage of cattle infected with fasciolosis.

Is there a significant difference between Plato's texts and what is known as 'Platonism', that is, the philosophical tradition that claims Plato as its progenitor? Focusing on the Symposium, an attempt is made here to show that, far from merely fitting neatly into the categories of Platonism—with its neat distinction between the super-sensible and the sensible—Plato's own text is a complex, tension-filled terrain of countervailing forces. In the Symposium this tension obtains between the perceptive insights, on the one hand, into the nature of love and beauty, as well as the bond between them, and the metaphysical leap, on the other hand, from the experiential world to a supposedly accessible, but by definition super-sensible, experience-transcending realm. It is argued that, instead of being content with the philosophical illumination of the ambivalent human condition—something consummately achieved by mytho-poetic and quasi-phenomenohgical means—Plato turns to a putatively attainable, transcendent source of metaphysical reassurance which, moreover, displays all the trappings of an ideological construct. This is demonstrated by mapping Plato's lover's vision of 'absolute beauty' on to what Jacques Lacan has characterized as the unconscious structural quasi-condition of all religious and ideological illusion.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), an effective endodontic irrigant against Enterococcus faecalis (EF), is harmful to periapical tissues. Natural pineapple-orange eco-enzymes (M-EE) and papaya eco-enzyme (P-EE) could be potential alternatives. This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of M-EE and P-EE at different concentrations and fermentation periods against EF, compared to 2.5% NaOCl. Fermented M-EE and P-EE (3 and 6 months) at various concentrations were mixed with EF in a 96-well plate incubated for 24 h anaerobically. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of M-EE and P-EE were determined via EF growth observation. EF inhibition was quantitatively measured and compared between different irrigants using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and different fermentation periods using the independent-samples T-test. M-EE and P-EE showed MIC at 50% and MBC at 100% concentrations. There was no significant difference in antimicrobial effect when comparing M-EE and P-EE at 50% and 100% to 2.5% NaOCl. P-EE at 6 months fermentation exhibited higher EF inhibition compared to 3 months at concentrations of 25% (p = 0.017) and 0.78% (p = 0.009). The antimicrobial properties of M-EE and P-EE, at both 100% and 50% concentrations, are comparable to 2.5% NaOCl. They could therefore be potential alternative endodontic irrigants, but further studies are required.

Introduction The aim of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the effect of different intermediary bases on microleakage between tooth and a nanocomposite interface in Class II box cavities in primary teeth. Methods Standard Class II box cavities were prepared in 52 primary molars and randomly divided into 9 groups according to the intermediary base used (Multicore Flow, Fuji II LC, SDR, Smart Dentin Replacement, and Biodentine). All specimens were subjected to thermocycling and prepared for microleakage testing and evaluation. Results There was significant difference in the mean ranks of microleakage between the 9 groups, which was observed in the gingival side (p<0.0001) and the occlusal side (p<0.0001). The mean ranks microleakage was significantly higher with experimental SDR, experimental Multicore Flow, and positive control materials when compared with the other 6 groups. The microleakage mean ranks were statistically significantly lower in experimental Fuji II LC, experimental Biodentine, and all negative control groups when compared with the other 3 groups. Conclusions Microleakage is affected by the application of intermediate material. Experimental Biodentine and Fuji II LC showed the lowest microleakage while experimental SDR and experimental Multicore Flow showed the highest microleakage.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of Ganoderma lucidum toothpaste as an antiplaque agent and to compare its efficacy with herbal toothpaste and mouthwash.Methods: Pooled saliva was collected in a sterile container from the volunteers after taking the consent. Tissue culture plate with 12 (3 × 4) wells was chosen. Pooled saliva of 20 mL was added to each well using the micropipette and was kept in the incubator at 37°C for 72 h. After 72 h, saliva was removed without touching the walls or the base of the wells. Each row was treated either with slurry prepared with Ganoderma/herbal/Colgate total toothpaste or herbal/chlorhexidine mouthwash/distilled water. One row of wells was kept as a control using erythrosine dye. After 30 s, all the wells were rinsed with distilled water. Erythrosine dye was added to all the wells, kept for 30 s, and rinsed with distilled water. The tissue culture plate was kept in the ELx800MS machine (ELISA reader) which was set at 540 nm, and the readings were obtained.Results: The results showed that G. lucidum toothpaste slurry reduced plaque than herbal and chlorhexidine mouthwash. However, there was no significant difference in plaque reduction between herbal and G. lucidum toothpaste slurries.Conclusion: The present study concluded that G. lucidum had better antiplaque efficacy than herbal toothpaste, herbal mouthwash, and chlorhexidine mouthwash.

Abstract Bone marrow (BM) angiogenesis is increased in Multiple Myeloma (MM) patients and correlates with disease progression and patient survival. Myeloma cells secrete the main endothelial growth factor VEGF. In mouse models VEGF secretion as well as the angiogenic properties of MM cells correlate with the lack of CD45 expression by MM cells. However, recent data indicate that VEGF plasma cell expression is similar between MGUS and MM patients suggesting that other molecules could be involved. In line with this hypothesis we have recently demonstrated that myeloma cells may also produce factors with angiogenic properties as angiopoietin-1 (ANG-1) and osteopontin (OPN) that are involved in myeloma induced angiogenesis in vitro. In order to identify which factors correlate with BM angiogenesis in MM patients, we have investigated in a cohort of 121 newly diagnosed MM patients (stage I–III) the expression of the angiogenic molecules VEGF, ANG-1 and OPN and their correlation with bone marrow (BM) angiogenesis and CD45 expression by MM cells. We found that 90% of CD138+ MM cells tested were positive for VEGF mRNA. On the other hand we found that 50% and 40 % of MM patients were positive for ANG-1 and OPN mRNA respectively. Using the previously published cut off for CD45 expression we found that 61 out of 121 MM patients were positive for CD45 and 60 out of 121 were negative for CD45 expression. Any correlation was not observed between VEGF expression and BM angiogenesis in MM patients (p=0.5), whereas the number of microvessels X field was higher in Ang-1 positive patients in comparison with Ang-1 negative ones (mean±SE: 6.23±0.2 vs. 2.94±0.1, median: 6.21 vs. 2.79; p=0.001,) and the microvascular density (MVD) was significantly increased (32.98±1.7 vs. 14.55±1.3, median: 34.69 vs. 13.04; p&lt;0.01; capillaries: 26.73±1.3 vs. 10.42±0.8, median: 24.06 vs. 9.04; p&lt;0.01, small venules: 9.56 ±0.5 vs. 4.14±0.5, median: 10.60 vs. 3.65; p&lt;0.01). Furthermore a significantly positive correlation between Ang-1 expression and MVD was found (Pearson Chi-square: p=0.036, Cochran’s Linear Trend: p=0.01). A significantly higher MVD was also observed in the group of patients positive for OPN, (mean±SE: 29.1±0.7 vs. 17.55±0.37; p&lt;0.01) and similarly, the number of microvessels per field was higher in OPN positive patients in comparison with OPN negative ones (mean±SE: 6.7±0.15 vs. 4.28±0.04; p=0.05). On the other hand, any significant difference was not observed between CD45 positive and CD45 negative patients for the expression of VEGF (p=0.4), ANG-1 (p=0.3) and OPN (p=0.09). Consistently we did not find any significant difference in both MVD and number of vessels X field between CD45 positive patients as compared with CD45 negative ones (p=0.5 and p=0.4, respectively). Finally, a multivariate analysis confirmed that VEGF and CD45 did not correlate with the BM angiogenesis showing that ANG-1 expression by MM cells was more tightly correlated with MVD and the number of vessels X field as compared to OPN. Our data indicate that ANG-1 and in part OPN rather than VEGF and CD45 expression by MM cells are the critical determinants correlated with the increase of BM angiogenesis that occurs in MM patients at the diagnosis.

Platelets may be linked to migraine. On the one hand they are activated during the migraine attack and thus may participate in the pathogenesis of the disorder (the nature of this activation is still unknown). In order to understand this platelet anomaly, we discuss the data available in the literature. In particular, we review recent in vitro studies of a-granules and dense bodies secretion, and aggregation induced by collagen and PAF. On the other hand, platelets share many metabolic characteristics with serotonergic neurons and endothelial cells. Accordingly, platelets have been used to investigate the possible role of serotonin turnover and nitric oxide function in migraine. In both cases, the data obtained have shown peculiar abnormalities that may explain pathogenetic and clinical aspects of primary headache.
