This article aims at establishing the role played by the church in sustainable development of Zimbabwe during a period of prolonged economic meltdown.  It compares and contrasts the role of the missionaries’ church and the modern day church in Africa and whether the church has not deviated from its main reason of existence. The study recognises the role the church is playing in today’s economy and how the society and governments can optimise on its influence in various sectors. The article adopted the framework that was established by the European Economic and Social Committee in defining a social enterprise in their research on EESC recommendations on Social Enterprises (European Union: European Economic and Social Committee, 2014). A descriptive research design approach was used and both mainline and Pentecostal churches were used to draw on the conclusions. This research design heavily relied on secondary data gathered through literature review. The study concludes that churches are playing a significant role in developing the soicieties in which they are established hence contributing towards economic development. The study recommends the need for churches to identify areas of importance  in the economy, such as the manufacturing industry, so that they channel resources towards establishing enterprises that improve the nation’s Gross Domestic Product. Furthermore, the Zimbabwean government should provide special incentives for church run establishments to promote their operations. The study did not cover all churches hence the findings must be viewed in context and the conclusions were derived from the evidence gathered.

Abstract The novelty of this research is to prove that the community has been unable to encourage and motivate entrepreneurship growth to improve the economy of indigenous peoples in Papua. This research was carried out in-depth in Papua using descriptive qualitative methods using extensive interviews, observations, and secondary data techniques. The results of the study show that the efforts of the Indonesian Christian Church in Papua to improve the economy of indigenous peoples at both synods, classical, and community levels are still small. The community is currently facing challenges internally and externally. You are grappling with the global Covid-19 pandemic situation. Internet problems still exist in many areas of Papua, making communication even more difficult. To improve the economy of the indigenous peoples, the community tries to implement a common empowerment strategy and strategic steps, namely an open heart-to-heart dialogue between all church components internally at different levels. What is required is a concrete problem mapping with a priority scale and the ability to implement strategic indigenous economic development programs, and supported by appropriate support according to the regional or usual context. At the same time, the community must prepare competent human resources in its areas for long-term economic development.

Abstract The novelty of this research is to prove that the church has not been able to encourage and motivate the growth of entrepreneurship to improve the economy of indigenous peoples in Papua. This research was conducted in-depth using descriptive qualitative methods. The location of the research was carried out in Papua with in-depth interviews, observation, and secondary data techniques. The results of the study indicate that the efforts of the Indonesian Christian Church in Papua in improving the economy of indigenous peoples are still minimal, both at the synod, classic and congregational levels. The church is currently also experiencing quite heavy challenges internally and externally, especially with the global Covid-19 pandemic situation which severely limits the movement of people in their activities. In some areas in Papua, there are still problems with the internet network which makes communication even more difficult. To improve the economy of indigenous peoples, an appropriate customary empowerment strategy is needed and strategic steps are needed, namely an open heart-to-heart dialogue by all church components internally at various levels. A concrete problem mapping is required, with a scale of priorities and the ability to implement strategic indigenous economic development programs and supported by appropriate assistance according to the regional or customary context. Along with that, the church must prepare competent human resources in their fields for the benefit of long-term economic development.

Evidence supporting the budding role of social enterprises in fostering sustained socio-economic development of regions and communities across the globe are evolving continuously. Hence, the global upsurge in the social enterprise research and practice is appreciated, considering social enterprise primarily is presumed to have great potential in solving a range of social problems. Even though social entrepreneurship and social enterprise have remained central and thought-provoking in the realm of scholarly investigation for the past few decades, the emerging literature on social enterprise and their role in economic development is riddled with theoretical inconsistencies and definitional controversies. Thus, little or no rational knowledge about their functioning and management is available. Further, factors influencing the sustainability of social enterprises have rarely been explored and deliberated. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to identify and analyze the factors which influence the sustainability of social enterprises with focus on India.

Purpose There have been global upsurge in the social enterprise research & practice considering social enterprise as a rapidly growing thought worldwide. The renewed significance of social enterprises (SE’s) has arisen primarily on account of their assumed potential in solving a range of social problems. The evidences supporting the budding role of SE’s in fostering sustained socio-economic development of regions & communities across globe are evolving continuously. Even though, social entrepreneurship & SE’s have remained central thought provoking domain in the realm of scholarly investigation for a past couple of decades, the emerging literature on SE’s & their role in economic development is riddled with theoretical inconsistencies & definitional controversies. Thus, very little is known about functioning & management of SE’s. For the sake of advancing the field, the purpose of this paper is to identify and analyze the critical success factors (CSF’s) of SE’s operating in different social settings in India. Further, a conceptual model is developed incorporating different factors of social enterprise operation in an integrated framework. Design/methodology/approach Based on the review of the extant literature, three categories of success factors comprising a total of 38 success factors for SE’s were initially identified. Under each category, the success factors were then classified and reduced to appropriate numbers based upon their importance to SE’s and their repeated manifestations in the literature, making a total of 13 CSF’s under all 3 categories. Based on these 3 categories of CSF’s, a conceptual model was developed. Findings The study determines thirteen critical factors as contributing to the success of social enterprises: (1) Business planning skills (2) entrepreneurship orientation; (3) leadership; (4) networking; (5) Innovative financing (6) triple bottom line planning; (7) social enterprise marketing; (8) community engagement; (9) human capital; (10) organizational culture; (11) Social Impact Evaluation (12) Frugal innovation & (13) Government support. Originality/value The paper presents a theoretical research model incorporating factors and determinants of social enterprise success to direct a future research agenda. The paper can further be used by researchers to empirically test critical success factors of social enterprises. Moreover, practitioners can also gain benefits from the conceptual framework & promote social entrepreneurship.
