In terms of occupied areas, onion is on the third place in the world among vegetable crops, second only to tomato and watermelon. In Russia, onion is grown on an area of 88 to 96 thousand hectares of onions, and ranks third, yielding to cabbage and tomato.The increase in the production of onions is not only due to the increase in the areas occupied by the crop, but also due to increased yields. This is achieved by introducing new highly productive varieties and hybrids into production, increasing the overall cropping culture and the level of cultivation technology. Along with the creation of heterotic hybrids at the present time, the Russian Federation also continues to select varieties that show high rates when grown in a oneyear crop. The results of production tests of a new onion variety of Forward Selected Breeding VNIIO a branch of the FGBNU FNCO has shown that it is promising because it has a high yield potential, high quality of bulbs and excellent preservation in conditions of repositories with controlled conditions. Characterized by mid-maturity maturation. The period from full shoots to mass lodging of leaves is 110 days. In relation to the longitude of the day, the forward sort refers to a group of long-day bows. The bulb is bilobate, rounded and rounded – flat, with an average mass of 90-120 g. The color of the dry covering scales is yellow-brown, the succulent scales are greenish. The taste is semi-sharp. The dry matter content in the bulb during the test years was 11.0-12.0%.

AbstractFodder beet has distinct benefits such as high yield potential, excellent feed quality (especially metabolisable energy), and suitability for cool temperate climates. Production area has recently increased dramatically in New Zealand, primarily for non-lactating cow feed during winter but increasingly for other animals and times of the year.Currently, establishing fodder beet requires intensive land cultivation and precision sowing of pelleted seed. It is generally regarded as a difficult crop to grow successfully. Competition from early season weeds means that multiple herbicide applications are commonly applied. Delaying the sowing date, until soil temperatures have risen enough for germination, limits the flexibility of this crop within farm rotations.Transplanting is a plant establishment technique common in both forestry and vegetable crops. It simplifies establishment and reduces the risk of poor establishment.Here we demonstrate that transplanting of fodder beet can be conducted successfully with low variability observed within the transplanted crop. Individual root volume and dry matter content are similar, whether crops are precision-drilled or transplanted. Our results suggest that transplanting is a financially feasible option for fodder beet establishment.

In order to realize the maximum potential parameters of winter wheat productivity, it is necessary, first of all, to use high-yielding varieties with optimal quality indicators of grain, as well as progressive agricultural technologies aimed at obtaining a stable crop yield. Winter wheat places high demands on its previous crops. Insufficient amount of productive moisture in the soil or its extremely low reserves affects the yield, and consequently, the quality of winter wheat grain according to unpaired predecessors. Moreover, dry autumn during the sowing period leads to its delay, which is the reason for obtaining uneven and weak seedlings. In this regard, studies have been carried out to study and assess the influence of predecessors on the agrocenosis, yield and grain quality of promising varieties of Adel, Grom, Tanya winter wheat. According to the experimental scheme, peas, corn for silage and sunflower have been identified as the preceding crops for winter wheat. Agrotechnology in experience is generally accepted for the foothill zone of the Republic of Adygea. The results of the research made it possible to identify the most optimal of the considered predecessors in the cultivation of winter wheat, capable of providing stable yields with high quality grain. Certain differences in the photosynthetic activity of the studied winter wheat varieties for different predecessors have been noted. It has been found that the leaf area of winter wheat varieties is in the range of 30,0–33,5 thousand m2/ha. The highest dry matter content in the range of 4,9–5,0 t/ha is observed in the Grom variety, and the predecessor is peas. The largest number of grains in an ear for three previous crops is 40–43 pcs / ear for peas. It also had a fairly significant effect on the weight of 1000 grains and the grain yield of winter wheat. For example, the weight of 1000 grains of the most productive Thunder variety varied from 40,1 to 41,6 gm, depending on the previous crop. According to the results of the experiments, the highest grain yield of winter wheat within the range of 5,3 t/ha has been noted for the Grom variety when cultivated for peas. The smallest grain yield in the range of 3,8–3,9 t/ha is typical for all studied varieties of winter wheat, namely, according to the cultivated predecessor – sunflower.

Abstract Tomatoes are the main vegetable crops in open and protected ground. Currently, a huge number of varieties and hybrids have been created for industrial and amateur vegetable growing, which differ in the type of bush, yield, early maturity, marketability, disease resistance, color, shape, size, mechanical strength, and biochemical composition of fruits (content of dry substances, sugars, vitamins, mineral salts, organic acids and other vital ingredients). Therefore, not all varieties are equally suitable for processing into functional food products. The article considers the assortment of tomatoes for open ground by yield, marketable qualities and the main indicators of the biochemical composition of the fruit: acidity, dry matter content, sugars, vitamin C, the accumulation of nitrates in the fruit, as well as by taste. As a result of a comprehensive assessment of 9 varieties of tomatoes, the varieties Nepryadva, Belkhavsky and Pulsar were identified, which have high yield, marketability, taste qualities of fruits, vitamin value and suitability for processing into functional products. In breeding for use as sources, the main economically valuable traits are of interest: yield and marketability of fruits – Belkowski, Nepryadva, Pulsar, the size of the fruit – Belkowski, Pulsar; the content of dry substances Belkovsky, Bui-Tur, Nepryadva, Pulsar; vitamin C – Belkowski, Bui-Tur, Pulsar; on the accumulation of nitrate – Nepryadva, Shuttle, Beljavsky, Kulon; taste – Belkowski, Nepryadva, Bui-Tur, Pulsar, Yakhont.

Public awareness of foods that have physiological functions for health is increasing. Consumption of orange fleshed sweetpotato not only meets carbohydrate requirements but also beta-carotene which is good for eye health. The aim of this reserach was to evaluate the yield potential and levels of dry matter content of promising clones of orange fleshed sweetpotato rich in beta-carotene. The study was conducted in Malang, East Java in Dry Season II 2016. Genetic materials used were 20 sweetpotato clones, including Beta-1 and Beta-2 varieties as a check. The treatment design used a randomized block design with three replications. The results showed that the clones tested had a potential yield ranging from 20.9 - 35.1 t/ha with an average of 25.2 t/ha. There were three clones  had a higher yield potential than the check varieties Beta-1 and Beta-2. Dry matter content ranged from 17.0 - 31.6% with an average of 25.7%. Fifteen clones had higher levels of dry matter content than check varieties Beta-1 and Beta-2. MSU 14018-06, MSU 14001-20 and MSU 14027-02 clones had high yield potential and dry matter content. All three clones have the opportunity to be released as new superior varieties of orange fleshed sweet potato rich in beta-carotene.

Biological and chemical properties of cv. Willamette were contrasted with those of cvs Tulameen, Latham, Meeker and K81-6 grown under agro-environmental conditions of Western Serbia. The following parameters were examined: yield per unit land area, total dry matter content, soluble solids content, total reducing sugars, total acids content, pH value, total pectines and total anthocyanins. The obtained results showed that cvs Willamette and Meeker had exceptional yield potential and highest quality fruits, which renders them suitable for both fresh use and various forms of processing, whereas cv. Tulameen can be recommended for fresh consumption only. K81-6 is recommended for processing and fast freezing after harvesting.

China is the origin and distribution center of kiwifruit, as well as the country with the largest cultivated area and output of kiwifruit. A previous study found that a new kiwifruit virus, Actinidia yellowing ringspot virus (AYRSpV), has been detected in kiwifruit samples with yellowed leaves. The incidence of this virus was high in kiwifruit plantings in Shaanxi Province. To determine the symptoms of this viral infection and the effects of this virus on the yield and quality of kiwifruits, we measured leaf chlorophyll levels and the fruit yield, total sugar, total acid and dry matter contents of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruits grafted with AYRSpV-infected scions. The results showed that after AYRSpV infection, symptoms including chlorotic ringspots were mainly observed in the spring and gradually recovered with high summer temperatures. A few of the leaves that did not recover showed symptoms of albinism, which lasted until the leaves fell. We found that AYRSpV infection could reduce the chlorophyll content of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit by 74.61-76.64%, the fruit yield by 14.50-24.10%, the sugar to acid ratio by 50.09-50.57%, and the fruit dry matter content by 1.67-1.78%. Our results showed that AYRSpV infection could significantly affect the yield and quality of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of nitrogen supply on yield and fruit quality of apple cultivars and to explore the relationships between canopy density and the different fruit quality parameters. The experiments were carried out at Kálmánháza, in Eastern Hungary in a private orchard in 2003-2004. The response of four apple cultivars ('Elstar', 'Gala Prince', 'Granny Smith', 'Idared') to different nitrogen dosages was studied. The assessed and calculated indices were: yield, fruit diameter, fruit height, shape index, fruit mass, firmness, dry matter content and colouration. The results indicated that nitrogen fertilization has a significant effect on the yield and fruit quality of apple cultivars. The calculated specific yield values were reduced by the application of nitrogen via the increase in the volume of the canopy. An opposit trend was observed for fruit diameter, fruit height and fruit weight, which increased with increasing nitrogen supply. The reduced shape index caused flattening of fruits. However, the improvement of fruit quality via increasing nitrogen dosage is only virtual, since these dosages increase the fruit size, but firmness, dry matter content and colouration are diminished, which decreases the value of the fruits on the market. The authors also studied the relationships between canopy density responsible for assimilation and light supply of the fruits and the different fruit quality parameters. The closest linear inversely proportional relationship was found in the case of colouration. There was a negative linear relationship between canopy density and firmness or dry matter content. The relationship between canopy density and fruit mass could be described by a quadratic polinomial function.

Realization of the yield potential depends on the biological characteristics of the variety, cultivation technology and weather conditions. The article presents the results of studies carried out in 2018-2021. on the productivity of various varieties of winter rye in dryland conditions of the central zone of the Republic of Kalmykia. The fresh yield of winter rye harvested for fodder depended on the variety. Its highest index was obtained for the Saratovskaya 4 variety and amounted to 17.7 ... 26.9 t / ha. The analysis of the productivity of winter rye harvested for green fodder showed that the studied varieties provided the yield of dry matter at the level of 5.4 ... 7.1 t / ha on average for three years. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental do Departamento de Agricultura da Universidade Federal de Lavras com delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 6, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de duas cultivares de cebola, cultivar híbrida Optima F1 e cultivar não  híbrida Alfa Tropical, e seis tensões da água no solo, 15, 25, 35, 45, 60 e 75 kPa. Com os resultados concluiu-se que o híbrido Optima F1 apresentou melhores respostas com relação às seguintes características analisadas: produtividade de bulbos comerciais e massa média de bulbos comerciais. A cultivar Alfa apresentou maior teor de matéria seca e maior perda de massa durante o período de pós-colheita. Considerando o intervalo estudado (15 a 75 kPa), em ambas as cultivares deve-se irrigar no momento em que a tensão da água no solo estiver em torno de 15 kPa, na profundidade de 0,15 m, visando à obtenção de plantas mais produtivas, bulbos maiores e maior massa média de bulbos comerciais. Palavras-chave: Allium cepa L., irrigação localizada, tensão da água no solo  VILAS BOAS,R. PRODUCTION AND POST- HARVEST OF TWO ONION CULTIVARS IN FUNCTION OF SOIL WATER  2 ABSTRACT This work aimed at assessing the effect of different water tensions in soil on the development and production of two onion cultivars irrigated by drip system. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of DAG/UFLA, from June to October 2008. The experimental design used was randomized block in factorial scheme 2 x 6, with four repetitions. The treatments comprised two onion cultivars, the hybrid Optima F1 and the non hybrid Alfa Tropical and six water tensions in the soil, i.e., 15, 25, 35, 45, 60 and 75 kPa.      The Optima Hybrid F1 presented the best answers regarding the following characteristics: yield of commercial bulbs and average mass of commercial bulbs . The cultivar Alfa showed higher dry matter content and increased mass loss during the post- harvest period. Considering the range studied ( 15 to 75 kPa) both cultivars should be irrigated when the water pressure in the soil is about 15 kPa at a depth of 0.15 m, in order to obtain more productive plants, larger bulbs and highest average mass of commercial bulbs . Keywords: Allium cepa L., trickle irrigation, soil water tension
