Based on the analysis of several morphological features and phenotype characteristics of seedlings in the juvenile test with 10 half-sib lines of Moesian beech (Fagus moesiaca (Maly) Czeczott), this paper gives the guidelines for further breeding and production of planting material for urban coenoses and the establishment of special purpose plantations of this species. The comparative analysis enabled the identification of the extreme planting material for further breeding programs aiming at dwarf varieties the selection of seedlings for tree rows, as well as the selection of planting material of special phenotype characteristics, which can be used as the initial material for the synthesis of the new varieties of Moesian beech.

Agroclimatic conditions of the Kamchatka Krai and limiting factors that restrain the growth of potato yield are considered. The characteristics of new varieties of potatoes of the selection of the Kamchatsky RIA are created in accordance with the priority for the region selection areas included in the State Register of Selection Achievements of the Russian Federation and protected by patents.

Based on the analysis of data available in the literature and our own experimental material on phytocenotic selection of the stony stalk (Bromopsis inermis Holub.) the important role of competition between plants in the field for the creation of new varieties of perennial grasses that provide high yields of feed polyvid agrophytocenoses is shown.

This paper presents the results of two years of research (2018-2019) of the most important phonological phases of seasonal growth and development, biometric parameters, productivity and economic efficiency of new varieties of Chinese plum (P. salicina Lindl.) grown in the foothill zone of the North Caucasus in the Krymsk district of Krasnodar territory on a plot of the Krymsk experimental breeding station – branch of VIR. As a result of research, the varieties Angeleno, Black Star, Byron Gold, Black Amber, Larry Ann and Sun Gold were recommended for cultivation using intensive technologies.

Exploring and exploiting variety by environment (V × E) interaction is one of the major challenges facing plant breeders. In paper I of this series, we presented an approach to modelling V × E interaction in the analysis of complex multi-environment trials using factor analytic models. In this paper, we develop a range of statistical tools which explore V × E interaction in this context. These tools include graphical displays such as heat-maps of genetic correlation matrices as well as so-called E-scaled uniplots that are a more informative alternative to the classical biplot for large plant breeding multi-environment trials. We also present a new approach to prediction for multi-environment trials that include pedigree information. This approach allows meaningful selection indices to be formed either for potential new varieties or potential parents.

Relevance and methods. In the conditions of southern mid-Siberia, biological features and seed productivity of 26 biotypes of the nursery of the initial material of the Psathyrostachys juncea (Russian wildrye) of 2015 sowing are presented. The work was carried out in accordance with the methodological guidelines on the selection of fodder crops and the methodology of the State Commission for Crop Testing and Statistical Data Processing — using the package of application programs "Snedecor," and B.A. Dospehova (1985), in the Excel program.Results. Phenological observations made it possible to determine the period of passage of the phases of development of samples of the slice collector from sprouts to caking, exit into the tube and shingling. The greatest stability of uniform growth from the period of spring growth to colossal is observed in biotype — K 12. Quick-ripe biotypes K 1, K 4, K 5, K 9, K 12, K 16, K 24 period from the beginning of vegetation to seed ripening is 65–75 days. Biotypes K 1, K 3, K 5, K 12, K 18 are noted by number of productive stems, length of colos, weight of seeds from 1 plant.

107.The perspective directions of selection of eggplant for conditions of open and protected soil are presented. The perspective source material for different directions of use is allocated. The characteristic of perspective samples for use in selection is given. As initial material for breeding it is advisable to use the obtained varieties and F1 hybrids Eskimo, Caliph, Sword of the samurai, Goliath Dessert, Umka, Albion, new line material Kit 53, L 67, L 83, 85/17, 94/16, L 107.

Elliott (1962) estimated that the average grain yield of wheat in the United Kingdom increased by 6·1 cwt per acre between 1947 and 1957. By considering results of yield trials carried out by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany he attributed 3·8 cwt of this increase to greater yielding ability of new varieties and the remainder to ‘other factors’, including the increased use of fertilizers, chemical weed control, better seed dressings and combine harvesters. The genetic improvement obtained by breeding new varieties is due partly to the incorporation of characters which are comparatively easily recognized, such as resistance to various diseases and lodging. However, even when these major limiting factors are absent from the environment the new varieties give higher yields, presumably due to physiological superiority. Many investigations, reviewed by Thome (1966), have sought to identify and establish the relative importance of the responsible physiological characters, but the information is still far from complete. This shortcoming is now the chief hindrance to more efficient choice of varieties for use as parents and selection of improved genotypes by the breeder. The objective of the three experiments reported here was to provide further information on the physiological basis of varietal differences in yield in wheat.
