Correlation and path coefficient analysis of grain quality traits in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Studies on character association and path-coefficient analysis were conducted on forty three rice genotypes including thirty hybrids and thirteen parents for grain quality traits on grain yield. Analysis of variance revealed considerable variability among the genotypes for all the characters studied. The correlation analysis indicated that grain yield was significantly associated with kernel breadth, breadth wise expansion ratio and water uptake at genotypic level. Results of path-coefficient analysis revealed linear elongation ratio had the highest positive direct effect on grain yield followed by breadth wise expansion ratio, gel consistency, kernel L/B ratio and alkali spreading value. This study revealed that genetic improvement of grain quality in rice is admissible by selecting characters having high positive correlation and positive direct effect on grain yield.

Nine rice genotypes were evaluated for this present study. Genetic variability parameters, correlation and path coefficient analysis were estimated for eleven agronomic and quality traits. Among all the genotypes, ASD 16 recorded highest significant grain yield per plant. In this present study, the PCV was higher than GCV for all the characters studied. The grain yield per plant recorded highest GCV, high heritability coupled with high genetic advance which indicates that the trait were governed by epistasis and dominant gene action. Number of productive tillers per plant and thousand grain weight showed positive significant correlation and direct effects on grain yield per plant. The purpose of this study is to estimate the amount of variability present in this material, which in turn helps to select these material for further breeding programme to develop high yield hybrids combine with blast and leaf folder resistance.

Character association and path coefficients for sixteen different yield and yield-contributing traits were evaluated for 112 rice genotypes at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi during Kharif-2019. The experiment was conducted in alpha lattice design and observations were recorded in five randomly selected plants for sixteen traits. The data were analyzed in WINDOSTAT 9.3 ver. for correlation and path analysis. The correlation analysis showed very strong correlation of grain yield per plot with biomass yield per plot. Days to first flowering showed very strong correlation with days to 50% flowering and days to maturity. Days to 50% flowering showed very strong correlation with days to maturity. Spikelets per panicle showed very strong correlation with grains per panicle and grain weight per panicle. Number of grains per panicle showed very strong correlation with grain weight per panicle. Path-coefficient analysis showed that biomass yield per plot, grain yield per plant, grain weight per panicle, grains per panicle, spikelets per panicle, harvest index, days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity and panicle length had a high and positive direct effect on grain yield per plot. Correlation and path coefficient analysis envisaged characteristics such as biomass yield per plot, grain weight per panicle, grains per panicle, spikelets per panicle, first flowering, 50 percent flowering and days to maturity showed positive direct effect and very strong correlation with grain yield per plot, indicating the effectiveness of these traits in selection. Path analysis revealed that traits like biomass yield per plot, harvest index, grain yield per panicle exerted highest positive direct effect on grain yield per plot. Thus, these characters which contribute to the grain yield could be exploited for future breeding programmes.

Assessment of variability and traits association in crop help to enhance selection efficiency. Therefore, the present investigation entitled “Variability, Correlation and Path Coefficient Analysis for Agro-morphological Traits in Wheat Genotypes (Triticum aestivum L.) under Normal and Heat Stress Conditions” was carried out during winterseason of 2019/2020 at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS), Bhairahawa, Nepal to identify traits that highly contribute to grain yield and suitable for its further improvement. The experiment was laid out following alpha lattice design with two replications. The twentygenotypes of wheat was sown in two different environments viz., irrigated and heat stress in November 29, 2019 and December 25, 2019 respectively. It was found that under normal condition, moderate GCV and PCV were recorded in SW, TGW, NGPS, and WGPS. Under heat stress condition, high GCV and PCV were observed in GY. High heritability and high GAM was observed in TGW & GY, NGPS, WGPS, TGW under normal and heat stress condition respectively. Under normal condition SW exhibited positive correlation and high positive direct effect on GY at genetic level and WGPS at phenotypic level. And under heat stress condition SW exhibited positive correlation and high positive direct effect on GY. Whereas, at phenotypic level, WGPS and PH exhibited high positive direct effect on grain yield. To assess correlation and to find out the direct and indirect effect of yield attributing traits on grain yield, thirty wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes were experimented at Kamalamai-04, Phant, of Sindhuli district, Nepal. The experiment was laid out in alpha-lattice design with three replications. Thirteen quantitative traits including grain yield of wheat were studied during this study. The grain yield of wheat has significant (P≤0.01) and positive genotypic and phenotypic correlation with number of spikes per meter (0.6**, 0.47**), grains per spike (0.69**, 0.65**), weight of grains per spike (0.69**, 0.61**), thousand kernel weight (0.87**, 0.74**), maturity days (0.5*, 0.47**), above ground mass yield (0.96**, 0.83**) and  harvest index (0.93**, 0.64**) of wheat. The genotypic correlation is higher in magnitude than the phenotypic correlation for almost all the studied traits. Path analysis of genotypic correlation showed a high positive direct effect of plant height (0.75), above ground biomass (0.6), spike length (0.43), and harvest index (0.29) on grain yield of wheat. Hence, for increasing yield of wheat in the breeding program, selection and hybridization can be made more effective and accurate by using those a significant positive correlation coefficient and direct effect on the grain yield of wheat.

A study was carried out to determine the association between different quantitative characters of eighteen genotypes of tuberose cultivars single. The highest positive and significant association was recorded for spike yield with plant height (0.33), rachis length (0.30), number of florets per spike (0.34), weight of single floret (0.63), matured bud weight (0.66), duration of flowering (0.52). The results of path coefficient analysis indicated that the weight of the floret (1.48) had very high positive direct effect on spike yield per plant followed by length of the floret (0.84) number of florets per spike (0.45) and duration of flowering (0.41). Spike length (0.27) had moderate positive direct effect. Plant height (0.16) and number of leaves (0.17) showed low positive direct effect and rest of the characters had negligible positive direct effect on spike yield per plant. The results of the study indicates that the above mentioned characters can be used for the improvement of tuberose.

This research was conducted in 2015 year in Kahramanmaras province (37°32'09.5"N 36°55'01.2"E) with 3 lentil genotypes (CAGIL, FIRAT-87, and FLIP 2005-20 L).  In the research, direct and indirect effects of yield components on seed yield were examined by correlation and path coefficient analysis. The correlation coefficients between the investigated features were found to be insignificant. According to the path coefficients, the highest positive direct effect on seed yield was determined as pod number per plant (p=4.015). On the other hand, the highest negative direct effect on seed yield was obtained from plant height (p=-3.606). The indirect effect of the seed number per plant over number of days until maturity on the seed yield was determined as the highest positive indirect effect (p=55.546%). The indirect negative highest effect on seed yield was determined in the pod number per plant over thousand seed weight (p=51.488%). As a result, the number of pods per plant should be taken into consideration by the breeders due to direct effect of it was positive and high

The basic aim of plant breeders is to improve the yielding potential of existing varieties along with creation of new high yielding varieties. This experiment was carried out to study the association of yield and yield attributing traits along with path coefficient analysis among twenty rice genotypes. Analysis of variance revealed the existence of significant differences in genotypes for all the characters studied. Grain yield had positive significant association with ear bearing tillers/m2 (0.5395**/0.6264**), number of filled grains per panicle (0.5236**/0.5774**) and test weight (0.2575*/0.2560*) and days to 50 percent flowering (0.3294**/0.3648**), It indicates that these characters are important for yield improvement. Path coefficient analysis revealed maximum positive direct effect of number of filled grains per panicle (1.4128/1.8979), test weight(1.1812/1.5927), days to fifty percent flowering (0.2404/0.1669), ear bearing tillers (0.0159/0.1224) and panicle length(0.0710/0.0813). Selection for the traits with positive association and direct effects will be useful for the improvement in yield of rice through breeding programme.

The research was carried out to study the correlation and path coefficient analysis of 51 different land races of maize for yield and component traits. Analysis of correlation between different characters suggested that the value of genotypic correlation were somewhat higher as compared to their corresponding phenotypic correlations signified the inherent relationship among the characters. Grain yield kg per ha. showed significant positive association with days to 50% pollenshed, days to 50% silking, days to 75% dry husk, number of cobs per plot, cob weight per plot and shalling perportion at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path co-efficient analysis revealed that the maximum positive direct effects of cob weight per plot, shelling perportion, ear height and number of cobs per plot towards grain yield. This finding suggested that more emphasis should be given to number of cobs per plot, cob weight per plot and shalling perportion in selection programmes aiming to improve grain yield in maize.

The present investigation was carried out to understand the interrelationship and degree of dependence of grain yield on its components and gall midge incidence and to elucidate their relative importance. The experiment was conducted using 42 rice hybrids developed by crossing 6 CMS lines and seven testers in Line X Tester mating design, their parents and four checks. Observations were recorded on gall midge incidence, grain yield and fourteen component characters. Correlation coefficient analysis suggested that grain yield per plant had highly significant and positive association with panicle length (rp = 0.4600**, rg = 0.5545**) followed by number of grains per panicle (rp = 0.4219**, rg = 0.5125**) and number of productive tillers per plant (rp = 0.4006**, rg = 0.4942**) and negative non significant association with gall midge incidence (rp =-0.1154, rg =-0.1430). Panicle length had the highest positive direct effect (0.9688) followed by the number of grains per panicle (0.5748). Gall midge incidence showed a negative direct effect at the phenotypic level and a positive direct effect at the genotypic level on the grain yield per plant. Further, it showed indirect negative effects via plant height, number of productive tillers per plant, number of grains per panicle, spikelet fertility, hulling percentage, milling percentage, kernel length and kernel breadth as revealed from path analysis. The result of multiple linear regression exhibited that only the number of productive tillers per plant and the number of grains per panicle contributed significantly towards grain yield per plant. The step-wise regression analysis revealed that the panicle length, number of grains per panicle and number of productive tillers per plant were the most important characters having R=0.6505 and thus, could explain 42.31% of the total variation of grain yield. Gall midge incidence contributed to only 0.95% of the variation for grain yield, which might be due to the low incidence or resistance of the hybrids to the gall midge.

The present investigation was carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Polasa, Jagtial, Telangana state, India to study the correlation and path coefficient analysis towards yield, physical and chemical quality traits in 46 genotypes including two checks in Randomized Block Design with two replications during kharif, october, 2019. Association of yield and yield components and among grain yield characters makes us to understand their relationship towards selecting a high yielding and good quality varieties. The result from the study revealed that all the nineteen characters studied has shown a great range of variation for correlation and path analysis. The character association studies in this experiment revealed that the trait grain yield plant-1 had showed significant positive correlation with plant height, spikelet fertility, 1000 grain weight, milling %, hulling %, kernel length and kernel breadth whereas it showed negative and non-significant association with days to 50% flowering. The path analysis studies revealed that kernel length was the major contributor for grain yield plant-1 followed by plant height, spikelet fertility, number of grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight, milling %, gel consistency, amylose content and alkali spreading value. These characters showed direct positive effects for grain yield plant-1. From the study it can be concluded that the above characters can be used directly as the selection criteria in any rice yield improvement breeding programmes.
