This study investigated whether learning strategies had made any impact on learners’ achievement and explored whether learning motivation was correlated with learning strategies. The participants of this study were the students from the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) intermediate level course at a college in Taiwan. The students were given a pretest and a posttest. The mean scores of these tests were compared with a SILL survey (Strategies Inventory for Language Learning) at the end of the investigation. The participants’ course performance was compared with their use of learning strategies. The assumption of the relationship between learning strategies and motivation is that motivated learners have a greater desire to seek out solutions or support from others and employ more strategies to process the new information. The results of this investigation revealed that only the memory strategies had a significant difference in the posttest of Group A on the independent sample t-test analysis.

This study examined the use of the Shipley Institute of Living Scale as a screening device in an intellectually low functioning psychiatric population of 40 inpatients. Shipley IQ scores were significantly correlated .72 with Full Scale WAIS-R IQ scores. There was no significant difference between the mean IQ scores generated from the two measures. These findings suggest that the Shipley scale may be used in this population despite a caution by the test's publisher that the test should not be used in assessing intellectual functioning in individuals with borderline or lower intelligence.

To see the difference in students' ability in writing expository paragraphs, this research uses a comparison between log learning and conventional learning strategies. Using true-experimental research, there were pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The subject of this research was the first-year students of State Senior High School 1 Selatpanjang, Meranti Island Regency. Two classes were deployed; an experimental and a control class with total of 47 students. The researchers used cluster random sampling, based on the group. In collecting data, the researchers used a test and an observation list. In assessing students’ writing, the researchers invited two raters, those who are qualified and considered as experts in teaching writing. The researchers analyzed the data by using t-test formula. The result shows that the mean score of students’ post-test in the control class was 65,5. Meanwhile, the mean score of students’ post-test in experimental class was 73,4. The result of t test sees a significant difference between students’ ability in writing expository paragraphs by using Learning Logs Strategy and those using Conventional Strategy (5.26). This result was higher than t table significant 5% (2,02) and 1% (2,69). H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. It means that there was a significant difference in students’ ability in writing an expository paragraph using Conventional Strategy and using Learning Logs Strategy.

Global citizenship refers to a sense of belonging to a larger culture and humanity in general. It emphasizes the people's political, economical, social, and cultural interdependence and interconnection at the local, national, and global levels. This study explores university students’ perceptions toward global citizenship knowledge, skills, and values in the Sultanate of Oman. To achieve this objective, a descriptive approach was followed by developing a questionnaire including 47 items covering three major dimensions of global citizenship education, namely cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral (CSeB). The questionnaire was tested to ensure its validity and reliability and applied to a study sample of 299 students (122 males and 177 females). The findings show statistically significant differences at (α=0.05) between the mean of students’ responses who studied Global Citizenship Course (GCC) and those who did not. This reflects the effectiveness of the GCC on students’ points of view. Also, the findings show a significant difference between students’ points of view regarding the accommodation variable in the cognitive domain in favor of students who live with their families compared with those who live on-campus. GCC plays a significant role in developing student skills and pro-social behavior. The effort to establish a concept of global citizenship is a small step towards a better understanding of its impact and effect.

Gender is one of the factors that distinguish the use of language learning strategies among students. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the level and types of language learning strategies used by male and female students. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 350 form four students from 12 religious secondary schools in Kedah, Malaysia. Descriptive findings showed that both groups of students used the strategies at a moderate level except for the reading strategies which were highly employed by female students. The results of t-test analysis show that there is a significant difference on the overall use of the strategies and in the five main constructs of strategies based on gender. Overall, the female students were found to surpass the male students in the use of language learning strategies. However, the construct of listening strategies did not show significant difference result. In conclusion, the female students used language learning strategies more frequently than the male students. The implication of this study is that teachers can plan a variety of language activities to encourage the use of certain strategies by different genders. Keywords: Language learning strategies, language skills, strategies for language learning skills, Arabic language, gender.Cite as: Abdul Pisal, N. & Mat Teh, K.S.

Background:Inadequate knowledge or inappropriate practices of breastfeeding may lead to undesirable consequences. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) regarding breastfeeding among primiparous and multiparous mothers in an urban slum. Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted among 200 mothers (100 primiparous and 100 multipara) in an urban slum and eligible mothers were selected using simple random sample technique. Results: The mean knowledge score on breastfeeding for the primiparous mothers was 8.4 ±1.8 and multiparous was 9.5±2.2. The mean attitude score for the primiparous mothers was 47.27±3.09 and 48.38±2.7 for the multiparous mothers. Out of 200 mothers, 118 (59%) had adequate knowledge and 86 (43%) mothers were correctly done breast feeding practices. However, 52% multiparous were found more correctly practicing breastfeeding than primiparous (34%) and it was statistically significant (P=0.01). The level of knowledge among multiparaous (71%) were found more adequate than primiparous (47%) and significant difference was observed (P=0.001). Most of mothers (83%) had positive attitude towards breastfeeding (82% primiparous and 84% multiparous) and mothers did not have any negative attitude towards breastfeeding. Conclusions: The level of Knowledge is still needed to be improved in primipara mothers and however, the correct practice of breastfeeding was also found low in primipara mothers than multipara mothers. These findings suggest an urgent need for dissemination of information about optimal breastfeeding practices through mass media and education of mothers during antenatal visits and immunization sessions especially in primipara mothers in the study area.
