Self-compacting concrete (SCC) shows to have some specificities when compared to normal vibrated concrete (NVC), namely higher cement paste dosage and smaller volume of coarse aggregates. In addition, the maximum size of coarse aggregates is also reduced in SCC to prevent blocking effect. Such specificities are likely to affect the results of non-destructive tests when compared to those obtained in NVC with similar compressive strength and materials. This study evaluates the applicability of some non-destructive tests to estimate the compressive strength of SCC. Selected tests included the ultrasonic pulse velocity test (PUNDIT), the surface hardness test (Schmidt rebound hammer type N), the pull-out test (Lok-test), and the concrete maturity test (COMA-meter). Seven sets of SCC specimens were produced in the laboratory from a single mixture and subjected to standard curing. The tests were applied at different ages, namely: 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 94 days. The concrete compressive strength ranged from 45 MPa (at 24 h) to 97 MPa (at 94 days). Correlations were established between the non-destructive test results and the concrete compressive strength. A test variability analysis was performed and the 95% confidence limits for the obtained correlations were computed. The obtained results for SCC showed good correlations between the concrete compressive strength and the non-destructive tests results, although some differences exist when compared to the correlations obtained for NVC.

This study aims to examine the effect of recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) artificial aggregate as a substitute for coarse aggregate on the compressive strength and flexural strength, and the volume weight of the concrete. PET plastic waste is recycled by heating to a boiling point of approximately 300°C. There are five variations of concrete mixtures, defined the percentage of PET artificial aggregate to the total coarse aggregate, by 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. Tests carried out on fresh concrete mixtures are slump, bleeding, and segregation tests. Compressive and flexural strength tests proceeded based on ASTM 39/C39M-99 and ASTM C293-79 standards at the age of 28 days. The results showed that the use of PET artificial aggregate could improve the workability of the concrete mixture. The effect of PET artificial aggregate as a substitute for coarse aggregate on the compressive and flexural strength of concrete is considered very significant. The higher the percentage of PET plastic artificial aggregate, the lower the compressive and flexural strength, and the volume weight, of the concrete. Substitution of 25, 50, 75 and 100% of PET artificial aggregate gave decreases in compressive strength of 30.06, 32.39, 41.73 and 44.06% of the compressive strength of the standard concrete (18.20 MPa), respectively. The reductions in flexural strength were by respectively 19.03, 54.50, 53.95 and 61.00% of the standard concrete's flexural strength (3.59 MPa). The reductions in volume weight of concrete were by respectively 8.45, 17.71, 25.07 and 34.60% of the weight of the standard concrete volume of 2335.4 kg/m3 Doi: 10.28991/cej-2020-03091626 Full Text: PDF

The paper presents obtained results of self-compacting concretes with various compositions with focus on basic characteristics development. Firstly the fresh concrete properties are summed and self-compactness classes are categorised and subsequently the values of compressive strength, static and dynamic modulus of elasticity of hardened concretes are compared. All the stated parameters were monitored during different ages of the concrete and therefore they provide a view of its development in time. With still enlarging scale of concrete types and development of their application it is necessary to monitor common parameters which due to the application of new concepts in raw material compositions and use of higher amounts of additives may notably differ compared to applied orthodox concrete parameters.

Decomposing plastics, including plastic bottles, is a very difficult process because it takes 50-100 years. Every year, the use of plastic bottles is increasing, but only few people are willing to treat plastic bottle waste. In this study, plastic bottle waste is used as a substitute of fine aggregate and shaped in such a way to have a sand-like gradation. The variations of graded plastic bottle waste are 0%, 5%, 10%, and 12%. The test objects for each variation consist of three specimens. Data are analyzed by using regression and classical assumption test with SPSS program. The results of the data analysis show that there is a simultaneous effect on the compressive strength with variations in plastic waste substitution. The compressive strength decreases with the increase in the percentage of plastic added. Maximum compressive strength is at the variations of 0% and 5% with19.192 MPa and 16.414 MPa, respectively.

Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) is one solution to get concrete construction which it has good resistance. Durability of concrete was obtained by the good concrete compaction to be done by a skilled workforce. However, one of the negligence that often occur in the field ie after casting they was ignoring curing of the hardening concrete. This study discusses the workability of fresh concrete and mechanical properties (compressive strength and splitting tensile strength) on SCC without curing. Testing of the concrete workability based on EFNARC standard. The mechanical properties test based on ASTM standards. The method Compressive strength test based on ASTM standards 39 / C 39M - 12a, whereas splitting tensile strength accordance standard ASTM C496 / C496M-11. The results of the study indicate that the SCC without curing effect on the reduction in compressive strength at ages 1, 3, 7, 28, and 90 days in a row at 4.11 MPa (16.1%); 4.90 MPa (13.9%); 6.64 MPa (13.1%); and 6, 72 MPa (12.75%). Splitting tensile strength decreased respectively by 0.1 MPa (3.25%); 0.26 MPa (7.99%); 0.4 MPa (9.52%); and 0.39 MPa (9.16%).
