ABSTRACT Drug use during pregnancy is a well-known risk factor for the manifestation of speech-language disabilities. However, the necessity of studies directed towards drug use and its influence on interventional speech process in cases of alterations of child language and fluency is observed. In this study, clinical history data are presented as well as pre and post-assessment tests (Speech and Language) and the description of an interventional process of a six-year child. The main communication complaint about the child was stuttering. In addition to the child’s clinical history, there was also knowledge of alcohol and legal and illegal drug use by the mother from before the moment of conception until this intervention process was reported. The protocols Stuttering Severity Instrument (SSI), Child Language Test (ABFW): phonology, vocabulary, and fluency tests, along with the Checklist of Verbal Communication Skills were applied. Based on these assessments, the child was diagnosed with mild to moderate stuttering, phonological simplifications, vocabulary inferior to that expected for his age, difficulty maintaining communicative turns, simplified narrative skills, alterations in psycholinguistic processes, and complaints from the school about his learning. The child underwent speech therapy in the areas of fluency and Child Language (phonological approach), showing evolution in the post-intervention assessment. Thus, in the present case, it became clear that the concomitant use of alcohol with exposure to cigarettes and marijuana may trigger changes in the acquisition and development of language, fluency and, consequently, learning.

This paper reports on the development of spell checking and morphological analysis tools for Latgalian. The Latgalian written language is a historic variant of the Latvian language. There is a wide range of language analysis tools available for Latvian, whereas the Latgalian language lacks such tools. The work is done by the joint effort of linguists who work on morphologically marked lexicon creation and IT specialists who work on language tool development. For the creation of a morphological analysis tool, we reuse the FST technology used for the Latvian morphological analyzer. We create a spelling dictionary that can be used with the Hunspell engine. All tools are accessible via Web Service. For now, the Latgalian lexicon contains 13,139 lemmas marked by 105 inflection groups. The work of lexicon replenishment still continues.

This article has described procedures and criteria a pediatrician may employ during office evaluation to identify children suspected of having a developmental language disability. Disruptions in vocabulary comprehension, vocabulary production, sentence organization, use of word forms, and articulation patterns are important cues signaling the need for referral for a speech and language evaluation. The 1970 NINDS1 estimate that no less than one out of every 170 children has a developmental disability affecting the development of language suggests that one or more such children with such a disability enter the pediatrician's office each week. Many of the negative consequences of this problem may be prevented or greatly reduced by early detection and appropriate referral based upon the information described in this article.

The article deals with the issues of improving methods of speech therapy assistance to primary school age children with severe speech impairments. It is known that they are the ones who experience persistent difficulties in mastering reading skills at the level of technical and semantic components. A comprehensive impact on the formation of reading skills and language generalizations in children is proposed, using materials from the reverse dictionary of modern Russian. The questions of correlation of these types of exercises with the thematic features of the school curriculum in the Russian language and literary reading are considered. Variants of creative tasks are offered to develop students’ skills in language analysis, synthesis and morphemic division of a word. Recommendations are given on the use of certain types of exercises in work with children who have general underdevelopment of speech, as well as underdevelopment of memory and attention processes.
