Although Spondias mombin L. extract has an excellent antimicrobial effect against oral microorganisms, it should be clarified how it affects enamel surface properties. Aim: To evaluate the color change, wettability/contact angle, surface roughness and morphology of bovine enamel submitted to the Spondias mombin L. extract. Methods: Thirty bovine teeth were distributed into the following groups: 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate, 1:32 Spondias mombin L. extract and distilled water. Color change (CC) was evaluated after immerging specimens into the solutions for 14 days. Surface roughness (Ra) was measured using a roughness meter; wettability/contact angles (CA) were determined by the sessile drop method, and scanning electron microscopy images were obtained to characterize the morphology (SMA). The pH of the solutions was evaluated using a pHmeter. The Ra, CA, and CC data were parametric (Kolmogorov-Smirnov; p>0.05). Two-way ANOVA (for Ra and CA) and one-way ANOVA (for CC) with Tukey’s posthoc tests at a significance level of 5% were used. SMA was analyzed descriptively. Results: The Spondias mombin L. extract revealed an acidic pH, and when in contact with the bovine teeth, it increased the wettability, but it did not cause statistically significant differences in the Ra. Spondias mombin L. extract caused the highest color change. The SEM images showed differences in the specimens’ surface submitted to the extract compared to the other groups. Conclusion: Spondias mombin L. extract provided negative effects on bovine enamel’s surface, including a high color change and a more wettable substrate.

Tooth whitening can be performed at the dental office, at-home or upon the use of OTC (Over-the-Counter) products. Among the latter, there are whitening toothpastes that promise to bleach and to prevent tooth staining. Objectives: (1) to investigate the bleaching and abrasive potential of different whitening dentifrices to enamel; and (2) to evaluate the effect of Oral-B 3D White Perfection® (Oral-B) toothpaste in preventing staining. Materials and Methods: Bovine enamel samples were stained and brushed for 14 days with water (negative control) or with different products: Colgate Total 12® (control), Oral-B, Sensodyne Branqueador Extra Fresh® (Sensodyne), and Colgate Luminous White Advanced® (Colgate). Oral-B was also tested before and after staining. The samples were tested by their color (spectrophotometer) and surface roughness (profilometer). This paper focuses on effects of roughness on wettability. According to Wenzel's equation, the transition of theoretical wetting contact angles is 90°, whereas many experimental results have indicated that such a transition takes place at contact angles smaller than 90°. A new model of wetting on roughness surface is established in this paper. The model indicates that the influencing factors of wetting on roughness surface include not only equilibrium contact angle θ0 and surface roughness, but also the system of liquids and solid substrates. There is a corresponding transition angle for every surface roughness, and the transition angle is lower than 90°. Surface roughness is propitious to improve the contact angle only when θ0 is lower than the transition angle. The effect of surface roughness on the contact angle increases with the increase of rE. To engineer the surface with different roughnesses, a Ti test sample is polished with sandpaper with abrasive number 350, 500, 1000 and 2000; the contact angles of water on Ti are measured by the sessile drop method. The results of the theoretical analysis agree with experimental ones.

Surface properties of composites such as roughness and color impact periodontal health and aesthetic outcomes. Novel bulk-fill composites with improved functionality are being introduced and, in light of the existing variety of finishing/polishing procedures, research of their surface properties is warranted. Sixty discs were prepared from bulk-fill composites (Filtek™ Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative and Fill-Up™) and incremental-fill Filtek™ Z250. They were further divided according to different polishing procedures (n = 5): three multi-step polishing procedures or finishing with a bur (control). Surface roughness (Ra) was measured using an atomic force microscope (The AFM Workshop TT-AFM). A spectrophotometer (Spectroshade Micro Optic) was used to determine color stability, after exposure to a coffee solution. Data were analyzed using two-way MANOVA (significance level of 5%). Resin composite type, polishing procedure, and their interaction had a statistically significant effect on surface roughness (p < 0.001) and color change (p < 0.001). Fill-Up™ exhibited the highest surface roughness and greatest color change. Differences in color change were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Filtek™ Bulk Fill registered the lowest surface roughness and color change, after the three-step polishing procedure. Both parameters were significantly correlated (ρ = 0.754, p < 0.001) and found to be material dependent and polishing-procedure dependent. Higher surface roughness relates to greater color changes.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the superficial texture of composite restorations after different bleaching protocols. Methods: Filtek Supreme (S), Filtek Z350 (F), and Grandio (G) were compared to Opallis (O) and Filtek Z250 (Z) (control microhybrid composites) and to bovine enamel using three different bleaching agents: 35% hydrogen peroxide Whiteness HP (WHP), 35% Whiteness HP MAXX (WMAXX) and 16% carbamide peroxide Whiteness Standard (WS). Six specimens from each composite were treated using each bleaching agent, according to the manufacturers’ instructions. Three random sites were measured for superficial roughness (Hommel Tester T 1000) weekly for each sample. Data were analyzed for each bleaching system using two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests at 5% significance level. Results: WHP treatment significantly altered the Filtek Supreme composite over time. When WMAXX was used, Grandio displayed the most significant alterations in surface roughness throughout the evaluation period, which was not observed for the other nanocomposites. Using WS, Filtek Z250 presented significant surface alterations over time, which was not seen in the nanofilled materials. Conclusions: Surface roughness alteration was material and time-dependent. The bleaching gels affected nanofilled and microhybrid composite resins. Enamel was the surface less affected by bleaching. (Eur J Dent 2011;5:173-179)

Background: Surface roughness is one of the most important characteristics of endodontic instruments, correlating to instrument fracture. The purpose of this study was to measure the surface roughness values of these instruments before and after resin root canal preparation without previous glide path preparation, with the new method. Data was obtained from field emission scanning electron microscopes (FE-SEM) combined with independent ImageJ software (NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA). Methods: A total of 20 simulated J-shape resin blocks with a radius of 4.5 mm, length of 16 mm, and angle of inflection of 600 were chosen and distributed into two equal groups. Each group was prepared by the WaveOne Gold Primary (Dentsply Sirona, Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) or the Reciproc Blue R25 (VDW, Munich, Germany) instruments, without glide path preparation. Special molds were used to confirm the same areas on the cutting blade at 3 mm and the instruments’ tips were scanned by FE-SEM, at different observed times. The parameters of Ra, Rq, and Rz in each sample were collected using the ImageJ software for analyses. The data was processed using the paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05. Results: Right after the first resin canal instrumentation, the surface roughness parameters of the two reciprocating investigated instruments were decreased. Conclusions: The FE-SEM images processed using the ImageJ software offered a trustworthy and suitable method for assessment of the NiTi endodontic file surface roughness.

Developing artificial caries lesions with varying characteristics is needed to adequately study caries process in vitro. The objective of this study was to investigate artificial caries lesion characteristics after secondary demineralization protocol containing theobromine and fluoride. Sixty bovine enamel slabs (4 × 3 mm) were demineralized using a Carbopol-containing protocol for 6 days. A baseline area (2 × 3 mm) was protected with acid-resistant nail varnish, after which specimens were exposed for 24 h to a secondary demineralization protocol containing acetic acid plus one of four fluoride/theobromine combinations (n = 15): theobromine (50 or 200 ppm) and fluoride (0 or 1 ppm). Specimens were sectioned and analyzed using transverse microradiography for changes in mineral content, lesion depth, and surface layer mineralization. Data was analyzed using paired t-test and analysis of variance followed by Bonferroni test at 0.05 significance level. After secondary demineralization, fluoride-containing groups had significantly deeper lesions (p = 0.002 and 0.014) compared to the group with 0 ppm fluoride and 50 ppm theobromine. Mineral content and lesion depth were significantly different compared to baseline for all groups. Theobromine did not show an added effect on mineral uptake. Theobromine-containing groups exhibited particularly deep lesions with a more uniform mineral profile in the presence of fluoride.

A this paper the influence of surface roughness on contact angles in the system of liquid Al wetting solid surfaces of Al2O3 has been studied. It was observed that contact angles of liquid Al vary significantly on different rough surfaces of Al2O3. A model is proposed to correlate contact angles with conventional roughness measurements and wavelengths by assuming a cosine profile of rough grooves with a Gaussian distribution of amplitudes. In comparison with the experimental results, the model provides a good estimate for describing the influence of surface roughness on contact angles of liquid Al on Al2O3.

This study focuses on optimization of cutting conditions and modeling of cutting force ([Formula: see text]), power consumption ([Formula: see text]), and surface roughness ([Formula: see text]) in machining AISI 1040 steel using cutting tools with 0.4[Formula: see text]mm and 0.8[Formula: see text]mm nose radius. The turning experiments have been performed in CNC turning machining at three different cutting speeds [Formula: see text] (150, 210 and 270[Formula: see text]m/min), three different feed rates [Formula: see text] (0.12 0.18 and 0.24[Formula: see text]mm/rev), and constant depth of cut (1[Formula: see text]mm) according to Taguchi L18 orthogonal array. Kistler 9257A type dynamometer and equipment’s have been used in measuring the main cutting force ([Formula: see text]) in turning experiments. Taguchi-based gray relational analysis (GRA) was also applied to simultaneously optimize the output parameters ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]). Moreover, analysis of variance (ANOVA) has been performed to determine the effect levels of the turning parameters on [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. Then, the mathematical models for the output parameters ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) have been developed using linear and quadratic regression models. The analysis results indicate that the feed rate is the most important factor affecting [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], whereas the cutting speed is the most important factor affecting [Formula: see text]. Moreover, the validation tests indicate that the system optimization for the output parameters ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) is successfully completed with the Taguchi method at a significance level of 95%.

This study was conducted to assess the surface characteristics in terms of roughness of two CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided-Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing)restorative material spre and post chewing simulation exposure. Methods: Specimens were prepared from two CAD/CAM ceramic materials: Cerec Blocs C and IPS e-max ZirCAD. A total of 10 disks were prepared for each study group. 3D optical noncontact surface profiler was used to test the surface roughness (ContourGT, Bruker, Campbell, CA, USA). A silicone mold was used to fix the individual samples using a self-curing resin. Surface roughness (SR) was examined pre and post exposure to chewing simulation. 480,000 simulated chewing cycles were conducted to mimic roughly two years of intraoral clinical service. The results data was first tested for normality and equal variance (Levene’s test >0.05) then examined with paired and independent sample t-test at a significance level of (p < 0.05). Results:The two CAD-CAM materials tested exhibited increased surface roughness from baseline. The highest mean surface roughness was observed in Cerec blocs C group after chewing simulation (2.34 µm± 0.62 µm). Whereas the lowest surface roughness was observed in IPS e.max ZirCAD group before chewing simulation (0.42 µm± 0.16 µm). Both study groups exhibited significantly different surface roughness values (p< 0.05). There was a statistically higher surface roughness values after the chewing simulation in Cerec blocs C when compared to IPS e.max ZirCAD groups (p = 0.000).Conclusion:Even though both tested CAD/CAM materials differ in recorded surface roughness values, results were within clinically accepted values.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface properties of orthodontic resins with and without fluoride. Forty disks, measuring 2 mm thick by 6 mm in diameter, were made of 4 bracket-bonding composite resins (n=10): Transbond Plus Color Change-3M/Unitek (TPCC); Transbond XT- 3M/Unitek (TXT), Orthocem -FGM (OC); Orthocem UV Trace-FGM (OCUV). The discs were photoactivated for 40 seconds with irradiance of 450 mW/cm2 and manually polished in sequence by silicon carbide sandpapers with 1200 and 2000 grain size and finished with diamond paste and felt disc. The surface microhardness analysis was performed using a Shimadzu Micro Hardness Tester HMV-2,000 (Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan) with a load of 50 gF and a 5 second penetration time. Surface roughness readings were taken using a Surf Corder Roughness Meter (SE 1700- Kosaka, Lisboa-Portugal). For data analysis, ANOVA (one-way) was used, followed by Tukey's post-test (?=0.05). The microhardness results showed a difference (p?0.05) in the means of the orthodontic resins between TPCC and TXT with the other groups. After the surface roughness analysis, the averages showed that TPCC resin showed higher roughness compared to OC and OCUV (p?0.05), and there was no statistical difference with TXT. It was concluded that statistically the composite resins with fluoride showed significant difference regarding hardness and roughness.
