Introduction: Dengue Virus Infection (DVI) is one of cautious mosquito-borne virus disease that transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Surabaya has the highest incidence rate of DVI in East Java. Transmission of dengue virus were significantly affected by the change of climatic factor components (precipitation, temperature, and humidity). This study is aimed to analyze the correlation between climatic factor components with the incidence rate of DVI in Surabaya and its distribution.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using analytic observational approach. The Incidence rate of DVI during 2010-2013 datas were taken from Surabaya Health Office. Climatic factor datas on the same years were taken from Juanda Meteorological Station. Correlation tests were performed by using Spearman Test.Results: As the result, there were 7,685 DVI patients during 2010-2013. Male patients have less proportion (51.89%). The highest DVI cases are from the age group of 5-14 years (>40%). Incidence rate of DVI was increased during February to April, and highest incidence rate occured in 2010 (n=3,379). There were significant correlation between precipitation (r=0.419, p-value p=0.003) and humidity (r=0.502, p-value=0.000) with the incidence rate of DVI in Surabaya during 2010-2013.Conclusion: Therefore, precipitation and humidity are two climatic factor components that may effect the incidence rate of DVI in Surabaya.

Dengue Virus infection is an emerging mosquito-borne disease. It is a global health problem and its expanding endemicity towards new territories is a serious concern. Relatively a new disease in Nepalese context, dengue abruptly appeared as massive outbreak in 2010, merely four years after its first introduction. It is a nagging public health problem in the low lands of Terai, expanding to new areas of Nepal in recent years.  A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine anti-Dengue IgM positive rate in Lumbini, Dhading and Chitwan district. The study was carried from June 2012 to November 2012. The total number of Serum samples was collected from 275 patients visiting hospitals with history of fever, headache and suspected DF. The samples were examined by ELISA. The anti-Dengue IgM positivity was found to be 29.09 %. The positive rate was highest in Dhading (70.37%) followed by Bharatpur (37.6%) and Lumbini (11.38%). The Dengue positive cases were higher in males (32.5 %) than female (24.8 %). The highest positive cases (41.6%) were from age group less than 15 years. Dengue has substantial expansion in Western and Far Western Terai region of Nepal which was limited to the middle Terai region in the past and mostly infects older people.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijasbt.v1i4.9135  Int J Appl Sci Biotechnol, Vol. 1(4): 224-227

Background: Corona virus disease (COVID-19) is declared pandemic by the WHO.  It is a very contagious disease. The global mortality rate of Corona virus disease is around 3.1%. The study was conducted with aim to assess the knowledge and practices towards Corona virus disease among urban population. Awareness towards the disease is important for prevention and control.Methods: The research design was community based descriptive cross-sectional design. The study was conducted in selected urban communities of Bikaner district, Rajasthan. A structured knowledge questionnaire and Practice scale were distributed to subjects from March 2020 to April 2020. In present study, 327 subjects were included in the study by random sampling technique. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 22.0.Results: In the present study, 56.27% were male and 43.73% were female. Nearly 70% participants were graduate and above in educational status. In present study, mostly subjects (76%) have average to good knowledge and practice towards COVID-19. Finding of the study suggests that there was a weak correlation between knowledge and practices of urban people towards corona virus infection. The correlation was not significant (p value=0.1976) at 0.05 level of significance. The study also revealed that knowledge has association with only educational qualification and gender shown association with practices of urban population.Conclusions: Knowledge and practices among population towards the disease are crucial to minimize morbidity and mortality due to the disease. The people have knowledge towards corona virus infection but they are not implementing it into practice.

Abstract: Dengue infection is a systemic and dynamic disease that has a broad spectrum. The key for good management and results is to know and understand arising signs. Various examination is necessary for diagnosis, one of them are the examination of hemoglobin levels and tourniquet test. This research was a cross sectional study. Samples were obtained from 37 pediatric patients with dengue virus infection of the total population sample of 72 patients in RS Advent Manado, RSU GMIM Pancaran Kasih Manado, and RSAD Robert Wolter Mongisidi Teling. The results of this study show the hemoglobin levels on pediatric patients with dengue virus infection mostly in normal levels and not all patients show positive tourniquet test results.Keywords: dengue, hemoglobin levels, tourniquet testAbstrak: Infeksi dengue adalah suatu penyakit sistemik dan dinamik yang memiliki spektrum yang luas. Kunci keberhasilan dalam pengelolaan dan hasil yang baik adalah mengenal dan memahami tanda-tanda yang timbul. Diperlukan berbagai pemeriksaan penunjang salah satu diantaranya adalah pemeriksaan kadar hemoglobin dan uji tourniquet. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian cross sectional. Sampel penelitian diperoleh 37 pasien anak dengan infeksi virus dengue dari total populasi sampel 72 pasien di RS Advent Manado, RSU GMIM Pancaran Kasih Manado, dan RSAD Robert Wolter Mongisidi Teling. This study was designed to investigate the seroprevalence and impact of Haematological and biochemical markers of dengue virus infection among subjects co-infected with hepatitis B virus infection in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study involved a cross-sectional study consisting of 150 subjects (120 discordant and concordant partners of hepatitis B, and 30 controls). Dengue Virus IgM and IgG were analyzed using ELISA rapid kit while HBsAg was screened using a rapid ELISA diagnostic strip. Both Dengue and HBsAg were re-screened later to reaffirm the result using Ichroma Fluorescence Immunoassay (FIA). Haematological parameters were analyzed using Mindray autoanalyser while ALT/AST was analyzed using COBASS 111. Statistical analysis was performed using Graph Pad Prism. The results showed a prevalence of 44.7% dengue virus seropositivity among the study population, 43.3% in dengue/hepatitis B co-infected subjects. The dengue virus seropositive participants had significantly greater IgG (70.1%) levels compared to IgM (29.9%), more in females (68.6%) compared to males (31.4%), and predominantly in the age group 31 to 40 years. A significant higher (p<0.005) mean haemoglobin was seen in males compared to females, and there is no significant difference in both WBC and platelets. A greater mean of ALT (p=0.005), AST (p=0.018) is gotten in Dengue/HBV co-infection when compared to non- Dengue/HBV co-infected subjects. This study revealed a high seroprevalence of dengue virus infection and the possibility of hepatic complications. This calls for urgent medical attention and more studies to confirm the circulating strains of the dengue virus as well as its involvement in hepatic complications.

Dengue viruses cause two severe diseases that alter vascular fluid barrier functions, dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). The endothelium is the primary fluid barrier of the vasculature and ultimately the effects of dengue virus infection that cause capillary leakage impact endothelial cell (EC) barrier functions. The ability of dengue virus to infect the endothelium provides a direct means for dengue to alter capillary permeability, permit virus replication, and induce responses that recruit immune cells to the endothelium. Recent studies focused on dengue virus infection of primary ECs have demonstrated that ECs are efficiently infected, rapidly produce viral progeny, and elicit immune enhancing cytokine responses that may contribute to pathogenesis. Furthermore, infected ECs have also been implicated in enhancing viremia and immunopathogenesis within murine dengue disease models. Thus dengue-infected ECs have the potential to directly contribute to immune enhancement, capillary permeability, viremia, and immune targeting of the endothelium. These effects implicate responses of the infected endothelium in dengue pathogenesis and rationalize therapeutic targeting of the endothelium and EC responses as a means of reducing the severity of dengue virus disease.

Aims: This study was conducted to determine the parallel and concurrent infection of dengue virus and Plasmodium falciparum among patients with febrile illnesses attending Bingham University Health Centre, Karu, Nigeria. Study Design: The study was a cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, Department of Microbiology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi and 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba-Lagos, between February and July 2017. Methodology: Blood samples were collected from 400 patients with febrile illnesses at the University Health Centre. The resulting sera was screened for dengue virus seromarkers (IgM, IgG and NS1) using Aria Dou dengue virus RDT kits (CTK Biotech, Inc, San Diego, USA) while malaria parasitemia was detected by Giemsa stained thick and thin film microscopy. Data collected were analysed using Smith’s Statistical Package (version 2.8, California, USA) and P value of ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 400 patients screened, 12(3.0%) were positive for dengue virus, 20(5.0%) for malaria parasite while 10(2.5%) for dengue/malaria co-infection. Infection with dengue virus and malaria parasite was found to be higher among female subjects aged ≤30 years. However, age and gender were not significantly associated with both infections in this study (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings confirmed the presence of dengue virus infection in the study area which probably may have been misdiagnosed and mistreated. Hence, differential diagnosis of febrile illnesses should not only be limited to malaria and typhoid as is always the case in our health care centres.

Severe dengue virus infection often causes proteinuria through several mechanisms, such as leakage of plasma proteins caused by higher protein filtering in the kidneys. The condition of proteinuria in patients with dengue shock syndrome will affect the management, prognosis, and mortality of patients with dengue virus infection. The objectives of this study were to determine the presence of protein in urine samples in patients in which IgG/IgM dengue was detected, to determine the presence of protein in urine samples in patients without dengue infection, and to determine the relationship between proteinuria in dengue patients and the degree of disease severity. The study was conducted in March-June 2020 at the Clinical Laboratory and Inpatient Clinic of Vita Medika Kepung, Kediri Regency. The method used was the consecutive sampling technique. The minimum sample size was 100 respondents with criteria for suspected dengue infection, onset fever > 4 days, age > 2 years, and no indication of other infectious diseases (blood and urine), divided into two groups, group with positive dengue infection and non-dengue group. The results showed that proteinuria was detected in 26% of respondents, secondary dengue infection and positive serological test of IgG, IgM only IgG were detected in 24 (92.3%) respondents and positive IgG and IgM were found in 2 (7.7%) respondents, this was shown by the p-value = 0.000 in the Chi-Square test with a Prevalence Ratio (PR) value of 11,987. In addition, Chi-Square test results indicated that a higher urine protein/albumin led to more severe disease, with p-value = 0.012 and 0.025 (p <0.05) and PR values of 3.333 and 2.800. The results of this study concluded that there was a close relationship between high levels of protein/albumin in the urine with the degree of disease severity in patients with dengue infection. In addition, an increase in urine protein/albumin levels is always followed by a decrease in serum protein/albumin levels.

Dengue Virus infection is always found in some part of the world especially South East Asia including Indonesia. The pathogenesis of Dengue Virus infection is still controversial. The aim of this study is to analyze the role complement activity, TNFα & IL12 in Dengue Virus infection especially in pathogenesis of Dengue Virus infection. Cross sectional study had been done since February 2009 in Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. Blood Sera of Dengue Virus infection were collected from Dengue Fever, and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever patient who had been care in Paediatric. Dengue patients and time schedule for taking blood sample for examination CH50, TNFα & IL12 as follow: on the first day on admission, the second day, the third day. Study groups of patients as follow: Dengue Fever, 36; Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever grade I, 37; Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever grade II, 10; Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever grade III, 18; Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever grade IV, 6. In this study found that the higher activity complement which lower level CH50 was more identified on Dengue Shock Syndrome and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever grade III than Dengue Fever cases. A concept of our study was focusing on manifestation of vascular leakage, measurement of complement activity CH50, TNFα & IL12 and clinical manifestation Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever. The examination of TNFα & IL12 in our study supported the role the activity complement. The conclusion are measurement CH50, TNFα & IL12 can be used as a predictive factor of the degree of Dengue Virus infection
