This article aims to give relevance to environmental school practices as an extension of school curriculum for student’s values appropriation. Emphasis was placed on the actor network theory, in an interdisciplinary way, about water consumption, flavored water, to grow plants and care about River Barigui, in Curitiba, Brazil. Two basic pedagogical resources were explored: a game to care about river water and strategies to increase consumption of drinking water. First, a board game was designed to pass ideas on disposal and pollution of drinking water in this Brazilian River that crosses vertically the whole west side of Curitiba´s city and a section is behind the elected school. As a vital food, specially, water must be preserved clean and not be contaminated by disposal of frying oil in domestic sewage, which causes severe pollution. This specific poisoning element is subject of the municipal company of water campaign. Second, practices were made to flavor drinking water with herbs and fruits without sugar and carbon dioxide, elements that harm human health. The students and teachers understood the proposals between curriculum subjects and need of practices to fix contents. Positive testimonies about the reproduction of practices in the family and at school ambiance in order to care about water made the activities meaningful. Knowledge values appropriation in a collective group was fructiferous. Teachers and students evaluated positively the empirical network created by the water activities that brought together classroom culturally processes, curriculum contents and academic contents.

Drawing on published feminist literature, this essay deconstructs developmentalism as a metanarrative that contributes to the oppression and exploitation of women and underpins educational practice. First, I examine feminist critiques of developmentalism, distinguishing between ‘insider critiques’ formulated by feminist psychologists evaluating and trying to improve traditional theories of human development and ‘outsider critiques’ articulated by feminists, both within and outside psychology, challenging science itself. Second, I address educational implications of the insider and outsider critiques of developmentalism. Educational reforms spawned by insider feminist critiques consist largely of efforts to make curriculum and pedagogy more ‘girl-friendly’. Reforms aligned with outsider feminist critiques call for ‘critique-friendly’ schooling that provides opportunities for reconceptualizing gender dualisms, critiquing school practices that strengthen dualisms and ongoing critique of educational reforms initiated in the name of such critiques. Following the outside critiques, I argue for feminist learning communities with authentic relationships between teachers and students whose diverse and changing identities and ideas are respectfully and compassionately acknowledged.

By situating this article within disability studies, decolonial studies and postcolonial studies, my purpose is to explore orientations towards independence within public school practices and show how this serves to reinforce hierarchies of exclusion. As feminist, queer and postcolonial scholar Ahmed (2006, p. 3) contends, “Orientations shape not only how we inhabit, but how we apprehend this world of shared inhabitance as well as ‘who’ or ‘what’ we direct our energy toward” (Ahmed, 2006, p. 3). I wonder how the policies and practices that I am oriented towards as a public school teacher limit the possibilities of encountering teaching and learning as a mode of reckoning and apprehending “this world of shared inhabitance?” I also wonder how remaining oriented towards independence as the goal of learning simultaneously sustains an adherence to colonial western logics under the current neoliberal ethos. Through Ahmed’s provocation I explore how the gaze of both teachers and students in public schools remains oriented towards independent learning in a manner that sustains conditions of exclusion, marginalization and oppression.

New changes to the school curriculum by enacting a minimum competency assessment (MCA) with PISA criteria in 2021 have led to confusion over the form of MCA questions among teachers and students due to limited learning resources at schools. This study aimed to produce valid and practical PISA COVID-19 mathematics tasks (PISAComat) potentially affecting mathematics literacy. This study involved 27 secondary-level students aged 15 years old with different levels of mathematics skills. Design research in the form of development studies was chosen as the core framework of this research assisted with the online learning platform. Data were analyzed descriptively through observations, tests, interviews, and document reviews. A set of PISAComat on quantity and change & relationship at the level of reasoning was gained after a formative evaluation. The formative process was conducted through zoom meetings and intensive communication at WhatsApp Group (WAG) to produce valid and practical PISAComat. After being tested in the classroom, the resulting PISAComat had been potentially effective in promoting students' mathematics literacy and life skills during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the guidelines and environmental practices implemented at Unifebe. The result may support the development of projects and teaching and learning practices as well as new institutional policies for the environment. A questionnaire was administered to teachers and students of the institution, and parameters were analyzed by classical test theory (index of ease, discrimination index, mean and standard deviation of the positive responses of the test and confidence interval for the mean of total scores). The results indicate the need for Unifebe to create a clear institutional policy, formally established, disseminated and implemented at all levels, as guidelines and policies broad that define and determine goals and objectives must precede practice before being applied in the institution. This article proposes a framework which presents a general overview of the key components within school scenario in relation to going green. Three important human factors are covered by the framework. They are school leaders, teachers, and students. Each of the groups contributes to implementing green school practices successfully through analysis. School leaders' attitudes are very decisive at the beginning of a new program. Teachers, who link both school leaders and students, undertake important roles of spreading and performing green school practices. Besides, students are the core of the framework. Going green cannot be finally realized if students are unwilling to participate and have weak awareness of environmental protection. In order to test whether the three groups of people are going to cooperate in implementing green school practices, the framework suggest following the theory of planned behavior (TPB). It is a theory widely used for checking human behavior and intentions. The article ends in presenting recommendations and research possibilities for implementing green school practices based on the proposed framework.

Abstract This study explored the views of participants who completed a 5-week, online, interactive, family-based, salt reduction education program (Digital Education to LImit Salt in the Home). A secondary aim was to explore the views of school staff on the delivery of food and nutrition education in schools. Children aged 7–10 years, their parents and principals/teachers from participating schools located in Victoria, Australia, completed a semi-structured evaluation interview. Audio-recordings of interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using NVivo. Twenty-eight interviews (13 children; 11 parents; 4 school staff) were included. Thematic analysis revealed that the program was well received by all groups. Children reported that the interactivity of the education sessions helped them to learn. Parents thought the program was interesting and important, and reported learning skills to reduce salt in the family diet. School staff supported the delivery of nutrition education in schools but indicated difficulties in sourcing well-packed nutrition resources aligned with the curriculum. It appears that there is support from parents and teachers in the delivery of innovative, engaging, nutrition education in schools, however such programs need to be of high quality, aligned with the school curriculum and readily available for incorporation within the school’s teaching program.

A flow cell set-up was used as a model drinking water distribution system to analyze the in situ microbial population. Biofilm growth was followed by transmission light microscopy for 81 days and showed a biofilm consisting of microcolonies separated by a monolayer of cells. Protozoans (ciliates and flagellates) were often seen attached to the microcolonies. The biofilm was hybridized with oligonucleotide probes specific for all bacteria and the α- and β-subclass of Proteobacteria and visualized with a scanning confocal laser microscope. Hybridization showed that the microcolonies primarily consisted of a mixed population of α- and β-Proteobacteria. 65 strains from the inlet water and 20 from the biofilm were isolated on R2A agar plates and sorted into groups with amplified rDNA restriction analysis. The 16S rDNA gene was sequenced for representatives of the abundant groups. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of the isolated strains from the bulk water and biofilm were affiliated to the family of Comamonadaceae in the β-lineage of Proteobacteria. The majority of the strains from the α-lineage were affiliated to the family of Sphingomonadaceae. We were unable to detect any strains from the Pseudomonas genus and found a low abundance of bacteria affiliated to the γ-subclass of Proteobacteria where Pseudomonas and E. coli are positioned. The analysis revealed a high bacterial diversity in the water phase as well as the biofilm, but no strains were found in both environments.
