Green school as mentioned in Thakur S. Powdyel’s book My Green School: An Outline (2014) was developed to support the initiative ‘Educating for Gross National Happiness’, conceived in 2009 by the Ministry of Education, Bhutan. This is to realize the need for holistic development of individuals and for the fulfilment of the true purpose of education. However, the green school domain requires deeper understanding in correlation with the nine domains of Gross National Happiness philosophy to unsettle the hollowness and reductionism of modern education. Therefore, the paper attempts to explore how the process of holistic learning and wholesome education become the key to understand the principles of life, by analysing the concentric sense of the green school concept constituting eight dimensions represented as ‘Sherig Mandala’. The inherent meanings of the elements of greenery categorized as natural, social, cultural, intellectual, academic, aesthetic, spiritual and moral have been closely examined to revitalize the claims of education.

A healthy environment is a basic human need and a right for everyone. Muhammadiyah has a commitment to the environment, clean living and healthy education through the process of character education, but the results are not optimal. One of the solutions offered is the Muhammadiyah Green School (MGS) program. This service program is carried out to improve the insight and skills of SMP Muhammadiyah Turi in running MGS and preparing policies for implementing MGS. Community service was carried out using a community development and participatory approach, with several methods, namely community education, training, diffusion of science and technology and consultation. The MGS program at SMP Muhammadiyah Turi has been implemented through a green curriculum, green community, and green school, and green culture. Green curriculum was carried out through the integration of good values and care for the environment in subjects, local content about the environment, as well as HW scouting extracurriculars. The green community was developed by forming MGS cadres, student guardian associations to take part in the MGS program, as well as forming student picket teams. Green school is carried out by managing school resources with “tabulampot” of rare plants, verticulture, painting school facilities, and so on. Green School New Zealand is a private school whose school fees confirm for critics the inequity of private education, but the school may contribute to an alternative vision of public education if its commitment to sustainability is recognised as a public good. Conventional understanding of public education is challenged by contemporary political and democratic theory on the nature of publics. While public education generally refers to education funded by the state, if public education is limited to education provided by the state it restricts the good that it can do because the state is not equitable in whose interests it serves. Concepts of public education need updating to reflect understandings of varied publics and the individuals of which they are comprised (pluralist publics); the freedom of publics in subjectivity and sovereignty (unbounded publics); and the mutuality and equality of relations within publics (publicness). Green School New Zealand undoubtedly works against public interests in some respects; however, its focused concern for the environment represents an emergent publicness that is not apparent in schools that are more closely bound to the priorities of the state. When we recognise their public dimensions, schools like Green School New Zealand may help with rethinking public education and how we develop new systems of education that act for the good of pluralist, unbounded but connected publics.

The subject of environmental education (EE) in India, also known as environment studies (EVS), was introduced through the intervention of the Supreme Court of India (SC). At that time, there was also global recognition towards the creation of ‘environmental citizens’ through inculcating environmental awareness in school-going children, with the motto of ‘catch them young’. Since then, EE in India has seen an evolution in itself through enveloping the studies of various topics related to the natural environment. However, one of the concerns has been that it is taught in a theoretical manner and that since it is not treated as a graded subject, schools have not given it the importance it deserves. However, the study of a green school of the Himalayan state of Sikkim shows that active participation of state machinery, coupled with a practical interpretation of its principles, can lead to positive results. It also shows that the creation of environmental citizens needs a holistic approach, through both amalgamation of theory with practice and syllabus with stringent state intervention and results-oriented action. This article, which uses doctrinal, as well as field research, techniques of interview and observation, looks into these aspects through studying a school in a mountain village of West Sikkim in India.
