Fruit waste is minimized by making different types of candies. The mass bulk candies can be nutritionally enriched by mixing fruits such as guava and mango. Thus, the objective was to develop candies in a mixed mass of guava and mango type mariola, as well as to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics and sensory acceptance. Three mass candies were made, differentiated by the concentrations of guava and mango pulp. The physical-chemical characteristics, sensory acceptance, Acceptability Index, General Acceptability and buy intention were analyzed. The data obtained were treated with Analysis of Variance, in a completely randomized design, comparing the means by the Tukey test at 5% significance. The candies met the standards of identity and quality recommended by Brazilian legislation. Only the pH readings did not differ significantly, varying between 3.92 and 3.97. The candies presented a variation of terms in the consistency attribute between “I liked it a lot” and “I liked it a very much”. The formulation with 30% guava and 20% mango stood out as the best accepted. The preparation of guava and mango type candies can be feasible and are well-accepted sensorially.

<p>The objectives of the experiment were to evaluate physical, chemical, and sensory characteristics of sausage by using fortification with β-caroten of pumpkin. There were five treatments of fortification with β-caroten of pumpkin as<br />the filler substitutions on sausage processing. The treatments were: 0% (control), 25, 50, 75, and 100% of the filler. There were five replications in each treatment. The data of physical and chemical characteristics from the completely randomized design were analysed by analysis of variance. The data of sensory characteristics were analysed by the analysis of non parametric test of Hedonic Kruskal-Wallis. The results showed that sausage fortified with β-caroten of pumpkin as the filler substitutions up to 100% level on sausage processing affected significantly (P&lt;0.01) on physical characteristics of sausage (decreased water-holding capacity, increased tenderness and it did not affect pH value of sausage), chemical characteristics of sausage (decreased moisture, increased protein, fiber, β-caroten, and it did not affect the fat content of sausage), and sensory characteristics of sausage (increased taste, decreased color, aroma, texture, touchness, and acceptability of sausage).</p><p>(Key words: Sausage, Pumpkin, β-caroten, Physical characteristics, Chemical, Sensory)<br /><br /></p>

The carpel is the female reproductive structure composed of a set of stigma, style and ovary. Normally passionflower have three carpels, however, some cultivars have this structure in greater quantity. The objective of this work was to identify relationships between the number of carpels and the physical characteristics of BRS Gigante Amarelo fruits. The flowers with three and four carpels were marked, pollinated and the fruits harvested from these flowers analyzed for transverse diameter, longitudinal diameter, pericarp thickness, fruit mass, pulp mass, pulp ratio, number and weight of seeds. A completely randomized design with 10 replicates per treatment was used and each plot had the average of 3 fruits. The data were submitted to variance analysis and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% of probability. The fruits generated by flowers with 4 carpels were 18,30% heavier, their pulp were on average 20.75% heavier, presented transverse diameter 7,53% superior to that of fruits generated by flowers with 3 carpels. Similar increments were identified regarding the number of seeds and the weight of seeds per fruit that increased 18,85% and 52.42%, respectively. This result indicates that cv. BRS Yellow Giant with 4 carpels generates heavier fruits, pulp and seeds with a more spherical shape.

Reproductive traits determine the selection method in plant breeding. The benggala grass of the Hamil cultivar was thought to be apomictic; thus, a study was conducted to determine its reproduction. The research began by studying the morphological characters, continued with observing the generative phase and seed production of the cultivar planted from seeds (generative) and from pols (vegetative). The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of the Research Institute of Animal Production. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with ten replications, and the treatments were different types of plant materials: seeds and pols. The Hamil cultivar taken from RIAP Collection was planted in pots with a diameter of 40 cm and a height of 30 cm. The results showed that most of the morphological characters of the Hamil cultivar planted from seeds and from pols were not different (P >0.05), so it was presumed that they were apomictic. The difference in morphology was only in the length and width of the flag leaves and the length of the internodes, where the cultivars planted using seeds were higher. The production of seeds, pithy seed weight, and seed germination of cultivars planted using seeds were higher (P <0.05). Further research is needed to determine the apomixis properties based on cytologically Hamil cultivars.   Keywords: apomixis, benggala grass, morphology, plnting material; seed

ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the initial development, as well as, the chemical characteristics of lettuce plants grown in substrate with high concentrations of bioagent (trichoderma). A completely randomized design with four replicates was used. The treatments, applied to a substrate composed of a blend of vermicompost and commercial substrate, were established by the following doses of the commercial product ICB Nutrissolo Trichoderma: T1) 0.0; T2) 1.0; T3) 2.0; T4) 4.0; T5) 8.0 and T6) 16.0x1011 conidia kg-1 of product. After inoculation, the substrate was placed in trays, where 50 lettuce seeds were sown on each replication. Plants were thinned after emergency stabilization, maintaining ten seedlings per tray. At 28 days after sowing, the characteristics percentage and emergence speed index, leaf area, fresh and dry leaf biomass, volume, length and surface area of the root were evaluated. We also determined the chemical characteristics of the leaves. The percentage of seed germination and the emergence speed index were lower at doses higher than 4.0x1011 conidia kg-1 of the biological product. All the studied doses influenced negatively in shoot and root development of the plants. The percentage of nutrients in the leaves was higher in treatments with ICB.

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel derived from vegetable oils used in diesel engines, in any proportion with petroleum diesel, or pure. It is produced by chemical processes, usually by transesterification, in which the glycerin is removed. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of a four stroke, four cylinder diesel cycle engines using either olive (B100) biodiesel oil or diesel oil. The following parameters were analyzed: effective and reduced power, torque, specific and hourly fuel consumption, thermo-mechanical and volumetric efficiency. Analysis of variance was performed on a completely randomized design with treatments in factorial and the Tukey test applied at the level of 5%. Five rotation speeds were researched in four replications (650, 570, 490, 410, 320 and 240 rpm). The engine fed with biodiesel presented more satisfactory results for torque, reduced power and specific and hourly consumptions than that fed with fossil diesel.

The main objective of the study was to standardize enrichment of aonla pulp to develop fruit bars. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 10 treatments. Aonla pulp was blended with 25 to 75% of different fruit (mango, papaya and jackfruit) pulp viz. Aonla pulp, Aonla with mango, papaya and jackfruit in different proportion of 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 each fruit respectively. The initial moisture content was higher in aonlapulp enriched with mango pulp in 1:3 proportions. Enrichment of aonlapulp with fruit pulp of mango, papaya and jackfruit reduced the ascorbic acid, titratable acidity and tannin content of the resultant fruit bars compared to that from pure aonla pulp, which is an indication in the reduction of astringency. Enrichment also resulted in an increase in total soluble solids, reducing, non-reducing and total sugars of the resultant fruit bars. Enrichment of aonla pulp with fruit pulp of provitamin A rich fruits like mango, papaya and jackfruit showed a rise in total carote-noids and reduced astringency and acidity, thereby resulting in fruit bars with altered palatability and enhanced nutrition. Enriched fruit bars contained three vital antioxidants viz. Vitamin C, carotenoids and polyphenols of all the treatments, enriched fruit bar containing 25 % aonlaand 75 % mango (T4) was found superior in organoleptic evaluation.

<p>Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento de clones de <em>Pyrostegia venusta </em>em diferentes tipos de substratos. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 06 tratamentos e 10 repetições, cada repetição foi constituída por um tubete de polietileno com capacidade de 103cm<sup>3</sup>. Os tratamentos testados foram: (T1) 100% de areia lavada; (T2) 50% areia lavada + 50% substrato comercial Plantmax®; (T3) 100% de substrato comercial Plantmax®; (T4) 50% areia lavada + 50% de esterco bovino; (T5) 1/3 areia lavada + 1/3 esterco bovino +1/3 de Plantmax® e (T6) 50% esterco bovino + 50% de Areia lavada. Após 30 dias foram avaliados o número de estacas sobreviventes, comprimento do broto (cm), número de folhas, comprimento da folha (cm), número de raízes e comprimento da raiz principal (cm).  Os dados foram submetidos a análise de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. Por meio da análise de variância (p&lt;0,01), detectou-se significância estatística, para as variáveis, sobrevivência das estacas e número de brotos por estaca de <em>P. venusta</em>, quando cultivadas em substrato composto por 50% areia lavada + 50% substrato comercial Plantmax®. Essa mistura apresenta a vantagem de ser mais econômica quando comparado ao substrato comercial Plantmax®, sendo portanto, recomendada na produção de mudas de <em>cipó-de-São João</em><em>.</em></p><p align="center"><strong><em>Utilization of different substrates in the propagation of Pyrostegia venusta by cuttings</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with 06 treatments and 10 replicates, each replicate consisted of polyethylene plastic tube the size of 103cm<sup>3</sup>. The treatments were: (T1) 100% washed sand; (T2) 50% washed sand + 50% commercial substrate Plantmax®; (T3) 100% substrate commercial Plantmax®; (T4) 50 % washed sand + 50% cattle manure; (T5) 1/3 washed sand + 1/3 manure +1/3 Plantmax® and Plantmax (T6) 50 % cattle manure + 50% washed sand. After 30 days, were evaluated number of cutting survival, bud length in cm, number of leaves, leaf length in cm, number of roots and length of the main root. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. By analysis of variance (p&lt; 0.01), there was significant differences for the variables, czutting survival and number of shoots per cutting when cultured on substrate composed of 50% washed sand + 50% commercial substrate Plantmax®. Furthermore, this mixture has the advantage to be cheaper as compared to substrate Plantmax®, so we recommend the seedlings of Saint John’s vine.</p><p><em><br /></em></p>

ABSTRACT This assay was conducted in the experimental area of the Federal Institute of Bahia, Campus Guanambi, BA, and aimed to evaluate agronomic traits of Prata, Cavendish, Gros Michel and Maçã banana cultivars three production cycles. The 72 treatments, 24 cultivars and three production cycles were arranged in a split plot scheme in time, in a completely randomized design with five replications and four plants per plot. Plots were arranged in 24 cultivars, Prata-Anã, Maravilha, FHIA-18, FHIA-18 BRS, BRS Platina, JV42-135, Pacovan, Japira, PV79-34, Pacovan-Ken, Preciosa, Guarantida, Maçã, Caipira, BRS Tropical, BRS Princesa, YB42-03, YB42-07, YB42-47, Grande-Naine, Calypso, Buccaneiro, FHIA-23 and FHIA-17; and subplots consisted of three production cycles. Data obtained were submitted to analysis of variance. The average of the cultivars were grouped by Scott-Knott criterion (p<0.05) and production cycles compared by Tukey test (p<0.05). ‘JV42-235’, ‘Japira’ and ‘Pacovan-Ken’ cultivars had larger size and ‘Grande Naine’ had smaller size. ‘Prata-Anã’ cultivar had higher number of leaves at harvest, with leaf area index similar to the others. ‘BRS Platina’ cultivar is earlier at flowering and harvest. ‘Maravilha’, ‘BRS Platina’, ‘FHIA-23’, ‘BRS Tropical and BRS Princesa’ cultivars presented greater potential for use by farmers.

This study aims to analyze the reject produced by the desalinators implanted in the semi-arid Pernambuco in contact with the seeds of Moringa oleifera Lam. For this, Moringa seeds were collected and prepared with the following treatments: reject (control), reject with whole seed with and without husks, reject with crushed seed with and without husks, seed residue with and without husks, in five replicas. Each replica was constituted with doses equivalent to 2.0 g of Moringa seeds for 200 mL of reject, with contact time corresponding to 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes, in a completely randomized design, under laboratory conditions, total of 140 experimental units. The physical-chemical and statistical analyses were performed through analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the F test, at confidence interval of 95%. It has been found through laboratory tests that seeds with crushed or ground Moringa husks are equally effective at adsorbing sodium from 1,868,0 mg/L to 24,6 mg/L (98,7 %), calcium from 1,005.0 mg/L to 894.6 mg/L (11%), magnesium from 741.0 mg/L to 728.3 mg/L (1.7%) and chloride from 6,997.5 mg/L to 6,782.4 mg/L (1.8%). Therefore, Moringa seed can be considered promising in the adsorption of chemical elements of saline water desalinizers.

<p>From harvest to consumption, fruit and vegetables suffer a series of mechanical damages which, depending on their sensitiveness, may cause damages that put their final quality at risk. This work had as its objective evaluate the post harvest quality of mechanically damaged &lsquo;Tahity&rsquo; acid limes. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with 3 repetitions and 7 fruits per treatment, mechanical damages were then evaluated by cutting and impacting in comparison to healthy fruits (control), and maintained for periods of 0, 3. 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 days, thus obtaining a 3 x 7 factorial experiment. Analyses were made throughout the 18 days, so as to determine the total soluble solids content (expressed in &deg;Brix); titratable acidity (in g of citric acid. 100mL<sup>-1</sup>); ratio (relationsoluble solids and titratable acidity); vitamin C (expressed in mg of ascorbic acid 100mL<sup>-1</sup>) and pH.
