ASEAN  Economic Community (AEC) has been agreed by the ASEAN leaders in 2003 as one mechanism to increase the social economic welfare of the people in ASEAN countries. Whilst it is no doubt the formation of AEC will give many benefits to ASEAN countries, there will be also negative impacts of the AEC. This paper aimed at analysing the implication and challenges of the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) toward Indonesian economy with particular attention to agricultural sector and the micro and small-medium enterprises (SMEs) development. The paper argues inter alia that the formation of AEC  will give benefit to ASEAN countries if and only if the ASEAN community has one voice in socio-economic and policial commitment and coordination. The economic sectors that need further greater improvement toward the success of the formation are agricultural sector and the micro, small and medium enterprises. Thus, much remain to be done by ASEAN countries in general and in Indonesia in particular toward the success of .the formation of AEC.

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) offers both opportunities and challenges to Indonesian Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Highly competitive SMEs are likely to exploit opportunities from AEC by expanding their markets and securing raw materials at lower costs. On the contrary, the increasingly intense competition is likely to marginalize less competitive SMEs in their own domestic market. This study aims to analyze the SMEs competitiveness in anticipating AEC. Using 64 SMEs that already export their products or have potentials to export as the sample; this research shows that Indonesian SMEs exhibit a high competitiveness level from the perspective of the production factor, the availability of related and supporting industries factor (especially in relation to the availability of raw and supporting materials), and the demand factor. However, SME owners acknowledge that AEC intensify competition and the government has not provided adequate facilities to improve the SME competitiveness.

Subject Outlook for the ASEAN Economic Community. Significance Just four months in, ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) integration is proving difficult. Recognising the slow progress, ASEAN ministers meeting in Vientiane earlier this month agreed on a delayed 2025 timetable for integrating financial services. The action plan aims to free more funding for national development by liberalising equity, bond and insurance markets and allowing banks to operate on a regional basis, but it has had only cautious backing. Impacts ASEAN integration will increase regional demand for insurance cover. Resolving ASEAN's development gaps needs investment in infrastructure, education and administration systems. Non-tariff barriers and external preferential trade deals will challenge the AEC's coherence for the foreseeable future.
