Purpose: To identify the impact of dealing with COVID-19 patients in clinical areas on nurses' professional self-concept and self-confidence. Background: Professional self-concept is considered a critical factor in the recruitment/retention process in nursing, nursing shortage, career satisfaction, and academic achievements. Professional self-confidence is also a crucial determinant in staff satisfaction, reducing turnover, and increasing work engagement. Design: Descriptive, comparative study. Methods: The study was conducted between February to May 2021 by utilizing a convenience sampling technique. A total of 170 nurses from two facilities were recruited from two COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 designated facilities. The level of professional self-concept and self-confidence was assessed by utilizing the Nurses' Self-Concept Instrument and Self-Confidence Scale. Results: The professional self-concept level among the exposed group to COVID-19 patients was lower than the comparison group, while the professional self-confidence level among the exposed group to COVID-19 patients was similar to the comparison group. On the other hand, the satisfied staff and those who received professional training in dealing with COVID-19 patients reported a higher level of professional self-concept. Conclusions: Dealing with COVID-19 patients has an impact on professional self-concept; the exposure group was lower than those who did not deal with COVID-19 patients, while the professional self-confidence level among the exposed group was similar to the comparison group. Getting professional training in dealing with COVID-19 patients and being satisfied at work were significant factors in improving the professional self-concept. Policymakers should create strategies that target the improvement of professional training in dealing with COVID-19 patients.

Background. Patient demand and clinician interest have driven professional training in integrative therapies, but few rigorous evaluations have been published. Methods. This project evaluated the proof of concept of training in acupressure, guided imagery, massage, and Reiki on clinicians’ sense of self-efficacy in providing nondrug therapies, self-confidence in providing compassionate care, and engagement with work. Results. Three out of 4 topics met minimum enrollment numbers; 22 of 24 participants completed follow-up as well as pretraining surveys. All would recommend the training to others and planned changes in personal and professional care. There were significant improvements in self-efficacy in using nondrug therapies, confidence in providing compassionate care, and unplanned absenteeism ( P < .05 for each). Conclusion. Training in integrative therapies is feasible and associated with significant improvements in clinicians’ sense of self-efficacy, confidence in providing compassionate care, and engagement with work. Additional studies are needed to determine the impact on quality of care and long-term workforce engagement.

Predominantly, a school provides pedagogical support to its students, though perceptions about the school’s internal environment can incessantly influence a student’s aggregated learning experience. The present study aims to investigate the impact of the campus environment on students’ study engagement and the roles of self-concept clarity and intentional self-regulation on this association. A hypothetical model about the relationship between campus perception, self-concept clarity, intentional self-regulation, and study engagement was tested. A total of 1597 students from Gansu Province, China, selected through a convenience sampling technique, were surveyed utilizing self-rated scales. Data were collected utilizing the Study Engagement Scale, Perceptions of School Climate Scale, Intentional Self-Regulation Scale and Self-Concept Clarity Scale. Results showed lower to moderate positive correlations between study variables. Students’ campus environment perceptions positively predicted adolescents’ study engagement. This association was also mediated by self-concept clarity and intentional self-regulation. All of these factors explained 41.26% variability of the study engagement. These findings show how the learning environment can impact students. Specifically, these results help demonstrate that self-concept clarity and intentional self-regulation have academic importance to optimize students’ study engagement that in turn promotes quality learning.

Professional training of orchestra conductors is traditionally aimed at performing primarily educational and creative tasks. At the same time, the inner world of a conductor as a leader of the ensemble still needs deeper study. In particular, formation of the conductor’s professional competence will not be effective without necessary personal qualities, self-awareness, self-concept, which involves a total reflection of his activities. The phenomenon of the orchestra conductor’s self-concept is presented not only as a set of ideas and attitudes towards oneself, which has certain characteristics, but also as a subject, which is entrusted with cultural and aesthetic professional responsibilities. The study of the self-concept will facilitate understanding the regulation and management of the internal process in the professional activities of the orchestra conductor. The study relevant because it can reorient the purpose of the educational process from the formation of knowledge, skills and abilities to a broad understanding of the multifunctionality of future conducting and orchestral activities.

Abstract Objective To determine the relationship between clinical performance and professional self-concept in critical care nurses. Methods This study was conducted on 308 critical care nurses. Data gathering instruments were nurses’ clinical performance questionnaire (NCPQ) and nursing professional self-concept measure (NPSCM). Independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for data analyses. Results The average age of the nurses was 33.74 ± 7.01 years. The clinical performance score of female nurses was significantly higher than male nurses. In the domain of clinical performance, clinical judgment and clinical inquiry had the highest and lowest scores, respectively. In the nurses’ professional self-concept, the highest and lowest scores were awarded to the subscales of self-confidence and staff relations, respectively. In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between self-concept and clinical performance of nurses. Conclusions Increasing professional self-concept improves the clinical performance of critical care nurses. Professional self-concept enhancement measures are recommended to improve the clinical performance of nurses in critical care units.

First-year engineering students usually spend more time on courses assignments and projects that they perceived to be more difficult, which increases students’ workload and impacts their persistence in engineering programs. Students possess a higher level of confidence also tend to perform better on the tasks. Therefore, it is important to explore the impact of different aspects of assignment instructions on students’ perceived confidence, and establish a comprehensive set of guidelines for first-year course instructors and curriculum designers in instruction writing. This research builds on existing first-year engineering student workload survey to identify the students’ confidence level on assignments in each first-year courses taught in University of Toronto. We compared assignment instructions in first-year engineering courses that students perceived to be difficult and easy, and conducted a focus group study to analyze students’ confidence level towards the same assignments but two different instructions. Observations suggest that students perceived assignments involving new concepts and complex problem context appear to be more difficult. Qualitative responses from students suggest that short instructions with explanations of course connections using plain language could increase students’ self-confidence towards completing these assignments.
