This research aims to determine the effect of tofu dregs compost and rice straw compost to growth of pepper cuttings. The research by experiment to determine the best dosage of tofu dregs compost and rice straw compost and to determine the relationship between P uptake and pepper cuttings growth. The experiment design was a factorial Randomized Complete Block Design consisting of two factors (dosage of dregs of tofu and rice straw compost) with 4 levels respectively, each of combination replicated 3 times. The dosage dregs of tofu compost are without dregs of tofu, 200, 250, and 300 g per plant). Dose of rice straw compost are without rice straw compost,75, 100, and 125 g per plant. The results showed that the combination tofu dregs compost and rice straw compost did not effect on all growth parameters. Application dregs of tofu compost of 300 g per plant and 75 g per plant of rice straw compost had an effect on the formation of roots and leaves. The relationship between growth and P uptake was not significant.

A field experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra, Bangladesh during 2009-10 to determine the impact of irrigation and suitability of mulch materials on the growth and yield of ginger. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments comprising of two factors viz., two irrigation (I1: irrigation in dry period and I2: control i.e. no irrigation and three mulching material (M0: control (no mulch) M1: water hyacinth and M2: rice straw). Treatment revealed that I1: (irrigation in dry period) showed that early emergence, highest plant height, number of leaves/plant, number of tillers/plant with maximum weight of primary and secondary rhizome, highest dry matter % and weight of old mother rhizome t ha-1. The highest yield of rhizome (21.19 t ha-1) was obtained from I1: (irrigation in dry period). Among the mulch treatments, the highest rhizome yield (22.51 t ha-1) was obtained from M2 (ricer straw mulch). The combined effect of I1M2 (irrigation in dry period with rice straw mulch) produced the highest rhizome yield (25.07 t ha-1).Bangladesh Agron. J. 2015, 18(1): 27-36

Application of right dosage of fertilizer and concentration of plant growth regulator are supporting factor of clove growth. This study was aimed to obtain the best combination of organic-inorganic fertilizer, the best triacontanol concentration and both interactions for increasing clove growth. This study used a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors. The first factor was the organic-inorganic fertilizer dosage package that consisted of 6 levels, i.e no fertilizer, 100% recommended dosage of inorganic fertilizer (r.d.i.f), 25% recommended dosage of organic fertilizer (r.d.o.f) + 75% r.d.i.f, 50% r.d.o.f + 50% r.d.i.f, 75% r.d.o.f + 25% r.d.i.f, 100% r.d.o.f. The second factor was the concentration of triacontanol that consisted of 3 levels, i.e no triacontanol, 2 mg L-1 and 4 mg L-1. The results showed that the application of 25% r.d.o.f + 75% r.d.i.f produced the best clove growth, but it was not significantly different from the combination treatment of the two other types of fertilizer as indicated by the greatest improvement on stem diameter, branches number, leaf area, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids. Clove plants did not respond to the application of triacontanol at a concentration of 2 mg L-1, but gave a negative response to the application of triacontanol 4 mg L-1 on the plant height and leaf area variables. The interaction of the two factors did not have significant effects on all variables. Keywords: chlorophyll, morphology, nutrient dynamics, physiology, vegetative growth

Soybean (Glycine max L. Meril) is one of the most important and well recognized oil seed and grain legume crops of the world. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the efficacy of BAU-Biofungicide (Trichoderma harzianum), Trichoderma based IPM Lab bio-pesticide and Bavistin against anthracnose of soybean. Five soybean cultivars viz. Sohag, BARI Soybean-6, BINA Soybean-1, BINA Soybean-2 and BINA Soybean-3 were used in this experiment. The field experiment was carried out following Randomized Complete Block Design in the field laboratory of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Anthracnose infections were found initially lower at 80 DAS, moderate infections were found at 95 DAS and the highest infections were recorded at 110 DAS in case of all the tested five soybean varieties. The highest percent reduction of anthracnose infected plants/plot over control was observed in Bavistin treated plot (76.25%) that was near to BAU Biofungicide treated plots. All the growth parameters of soybean plants such as plant height, number of pods/plant, seed weight/plant, yield/plot and yield/ha were increased significantly in BAU-Biofungicide treated plots that showed best performance in compare to IPM Lab bio-pesticide (2%) and Bavistin @ 0.2% when these treatments were applied two times with 15 days interval. However, anthracnose incidence was reduced significantly when all the treatments applied in this experiment and the effect of BAU-Biofungicide was found almost similar to Bavistin in reduction of anthracnose of soybean.Res. &nbsp;Laboratory-produced alginate-bead inoculum of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi Cortinarius sp. and&nbsp;Gomphidius glutinosus, fungal commercial products ECtovit<sup>&reg; </sup>and Trichomil<sup>&reg;</sup>, bacterial commercial product BactoFil&nbsp;B<sup>&reg;</sup>, and commercial rooting stimulator Vetozen<sup>&reg;</sup> were applied to a peat-perlite (1:2, v:v) rooting substrate of Norway spruce stem cuttings collected from 4-year-old nursery-grown seedlings immediately before the insertion of cuttings into the substrate. The application of beads free of fungi and the substrate without an additive were the other treatments. The cuttings were rooted in vessels (60 cuttings per vessel, 180 per treatment) placed in a glasshouse and arranged in a randomized complete block design. The cuttings were estimated for one growing season (approximately for 26 weeks) after their insertion into the rooting substrate. Rooting % of the cuttings ranged from 45 (mycelium-free beads) to 75 (control) according to treatments, 64 on average. No significant differences among treatments were found in % of ECM morphotypes, total ECM colonization of roots (%), and growth parameters of shoots and roots of the cuttings. The applied microbial additives were not sufficiently efficient to form treatment-related ectomycorrhizas that were formed by naturally occurring ECM fungi. Inoculation by the ECM fungus Cortinarius sp. and application of Trichomil had a partial stimulative effect on the shoot growth of cuttings. Shoot and root growth parameters were not significantly correlated with total ECM colonization, except for a negative dependence of the root number in Trichomil treatment. A higher concentration of K but lower concentrations of Ca and Mg in Ectovit treatment than in the other treatments were detected.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Harrowing is one of the most popular mechanical methods to control weeds. Nevertheless, the relationship between the effect of different harrowing intensities using spike-tooth harrow in barley-pea intercrop on the yield and mycoflora of grains has not yet been studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of harrow intensity using spike-tooth harrow in barley-pea mixture on the mycological quality of harvested grains, grain yield, as well as influence of barley and pea grain moisture on the abundance of fungi. The field experiment was carried out during 2010–2012, and it was conducted using a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Weed control was mechanical and chemical. In this study, we have shown that harrowing in barley-pea intercrops does not reduce the yield of either mixture components, both with respect to grain quantity or mycological quality after harvest, compared to controls—without harrowing and the herbicide MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid). However, increasing the intensity of harrowing did not result in a consistently larger crop yield or reduction in fungal abundance in the grains. The grains’ internal structures and surface of both tested components of the mixture were colonized to a large extent by cosmopolitan fungi, of which Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. was the most abundant.

This research was conducted to determine the effect of sugar contentration and fermentation time to the charateristics of mung bean probiotic drink with the addition of Lactobacillus rhamnosus SKG 34. The Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors was used in this research. First factor was the sugar concentration which consists of three levels 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%. Second factor was the fermentation time which consists of five levels 8 hours, 10 hours, 12 hours, 14 hours and 16 hours. The parameters observed in this research were sugar level, total lactic acid, pH, total lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and sensory acceptances such as colour, flavor, taste and overall acceptance. The result of this research showed that the sugar concentration had significant effect to the total sugar but had no significant effect to the total lactic acid and pH. The fermentation time had significant effect to the pH, total lactic acid and total sugar. The interaction of sugar concentration and fermentation time had no significant effect to the characteristic of pH, total lactic acid, total sugar, color, flavor, taste and overall acceptance. Mung bean probiotic drink with the best characteristic was obtained at 5% of sugar concentration and 8 hours fermentation time with criteria sugar concentration levels at 8.06 %, total lactic acid 0.27 %, pH at 5.29, and 1.6 x 108 CFU/ml total LAB with sensory results state that the colour was slightly liked, the flavor was slightly liked, the taste was preferred and slightly sweet, and overall acceptance was preferred.

The quality of seed needs to be considered in carrot seed production to maintain its productivity. The research aims to find out the response of stecklings age and plant spacing on carrot seed quality and production. This research was held on July 2018 – April 2019 in Berastagi field trial (1340 m MSL). The experiment used Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors, i.e., stecklings age (2 and 3 months) and plant spacing (25, 50, 75, and 100 cm), replicated four times (32 experiment units), 10 plants from each experiment units were taken as samples. The result showed that stecklings age and plant spacing were affected to plant vegetative and generative stages. The combination of 2-month stecklings and 50 cm plant spacing increased the number of secondary umble, if compared to cultivation, which was generally used by the farmer (3-month stecklings and 25 cm plant spacing). The best quality of carrot seed was obtained from the combination of 3-month stecklings and 50 cm plant spacing.

Traditional medicines have been used in both developed and developing countries for a long time, one of which is longevity spinach (Gynura procumbens). Its plants are one type of plant that is used by the community to treat various diseases with their flavonoid content. This plant produces various flavonoids, such as quercetin, which can be optimized by providing shade and increasing nitrogen nutrients by giving biochar and fertilizing. This study aimed to determine the effects of biochar, shade, and fertilizer on the growth and quercetin content of Gynura procumbens plants. This research was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two factors. The first factor was the administration of biochar at four doses, consisting of B0 (without biochar), B10 (biochar 10 tons/ha), B15 (biochar 15 tons/ha), and B20 (biochar 20 tons/ha). Meanwhile, the second factor was the intensity of the shade with three levels of treatment, namely, I0 (without shade), I50 (50%), and I70 (70%). The results showed that the addition of 15 ton/ha of biochar with 70% shade increased the quercetin content by 0.51%.

Diversification of plant species is needed to anticipate price fluctuation of vegetables. Intercropping system compared to monoculture can give more benefits to farmers. The arrangement of plant spacings of sweet corn and cabbage variety is expected to result in higher yields and benefits in intercropping. The field experiment, which had the objective to study the effects of plant spacing of sweet corn and cabbage variety on yields of sweet corn and cabbage in the intercropping system, had been conducted from March to July 2008. The experiment was carried out at the dryland farming area at Candikuning Village, district of Baturiti, Tabanan regency, 1.200 m asl. In the experiment, a randomized complete block design with two factors namely plant spacing of sweet corn (120 cm x40 cm, 180 cm x 40 cm and 240 cm x 40 cm) and variety of cabbage (Green Nova and Summer-Autumn) were used. Plant spacing of cabbage was 60 cm x 40 cm. All treatments were replicated four times. The results of the experiment showed that the effect of interaction between plant spacing of sweet corn and cabbage variety in intercropping was not significant on yields of sweet corn and cabbage. Individually, sweet corn plant spacing of 120 cm x40 cm gave the highest fresh weight of cob without husk (10,91 t ha"'), which was 44.50% and 80.93% respectively higher than the spacing of ! 80 cm x 40 cm and 240 cm x 40 cm. The spacing of 180 cm x 40 cm resulted in not the significantly different fresh weight of cob with husk but gave the highest fresh weight of cabbage heads (56.101 ha'1), which was 27.36% higher than that at sweet corn spacing of 120 cm x 40 cm and was not significantly different from that at 240 cm x 40 cm. Cabbage variety Green Nova gave the highest head (56.101 ha1), which was 14.48% higher than variety Summer-Autumn. Intercropping between cabbage variety Green Nova and Sweet corn at 180 cm x 40 cm spacing resulted in the highest benefit (Rp. 20,488125 t ha'1), which was Rp. 3,335500 higher than the average benefit of cabbage monoculture. The efficiency of land use in intercropping was higher (LER: 1.69) than in monoculture (LER: 1). It is suggested to use cabbage variety Green Nova intercropped with sweet corn at I 80 cm x 40 cm spacing. An experiment studying the effect of cabbage intercropped with sweet corn and other short season vegetables planted after harvesting cabbages is also suggested.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is an important tropical cash crop cultivated in Ghana. It provides livelihood for about 200,000 people and contributes 6.1% to Ghana&rsquo;s gross domestic product (GDP). Four Brazilian dwarf accessions were introduced to improve nut yield. Objectives of this study were to (1) assess the agronomic performance of the accessions across two contrasting ecologies, (2) determine environmental influence on juvenile growth, (3) determine the relationship between early vegetative growth and yield and (4) explore heritability and genetic advance for the measured agronomic traits. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Results revealed significant (p &lt; 0.05) environmental influence on growth and yield of cashew. Transitional savanna agro-ecology is more suitable for cashew growth and development. Crop year, location and crop year &times; location interactions also influenced most of the agronomic traits. Early growth characteristics alone were not enough to predict yield. Genotype B2 ranked highest yielding across the agro-ecologies. Moderate to high heritability and genetic advance estimates were observed for nut yield, plant height and girth, an indication of variability among accessions needed for cashew improvement in Ghana.
