Are the keyboards weightier than the biros? This question is the focus of the present study in which the investigation of the modes of testing in mathematics (computer-based testing-CBT and paper-based testing-PBT) was carried out using mathematics achievement and mathematics anxiety as dependent measures. Through a pre-test post-test experimental research, the study tested two null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance using an independent samples t-test. The study lasted for four weeks in two Nigerian senior secondary schools. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the mean mathematics achievement scores of students tested by the computer-based test and the paper-based test. Also, there was no significant difference between the mean mathematics anxiety scores of students tested by the computer-based test and the paper-based test. The implication of these results is that assessing students using the two modes showed no variations in their achievement and anxiety in mathematics. Thus, the mode of testing showed no differential effect on students’ learning outcomes in mathematics. Based on the findings of this study, government at levels in Nigeria need to put in place the enabling environment and infrastructural facilities needed for schools to benefit fully from the advantages inherent in the CBT mode of assessment.

This study examined the Effect of Multiple Intelligences Instructional Strategy (MIIS) on Achievement and Retention in Mole Concept among Chemistry Students in Abuja, Nigeria. Quasi experimental, pre-test, post-test, and post post-test control group design was adopted for this study. Two research questions guided the study and two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of the study was senior secondary school chemistry students in Abuja, Nigeria. The sample for the study was two co-educational schools. One served as the experimental group and the other served as the control group. Mole Concept Achievement Test (MCAT) (KR-21 = 0.70) was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research question, while null hypotheses were tested using ANCOVA at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study reveals that, there was significant difference between the mean achievement scores of students taught the mole concept using multiple intelligences instructional strategy (MIIS) and those taught using lecture method. There was a significant difference between the mean retention scores of chemistry students taught the mole concept using MIIS and conventional method. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations have been made; there is a need for curriculum developers to develop appropriate curriculum that will make provision for the teacher to adopt various activities that will appeal to each students’ learning style or intelligence to enable them learn effectively

This research was intended to investigate the effect of a culture-based approach in improving students’ reading comprehension on spoof text. For that purpose, a true experimental study was applied to the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Soreang. The sample of this study was 88 students from that school. These students were divided equally into the control and experimental group. The experimental group was given the Culture-Based Approach (CBA) as the treatment in comprehending the text.  The students’ scores of pre-test and post-test from both groups were statistically analyzed and compared by the T-test. The findings could be summarized that generally, students from the experimental group gained better achievement than from the control group on their post-test scores. The data analysis also showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of the pre-test (53.45) and the post-test (58.39.). Furthermore, the result of the t-test (5.707) was relatively higher than the t- table (2.018) for a 0.5 percent level of significance. It indicated that the students’ achievement was significantly improved after the treatment of using a Culture-Based Approach. Thus, it is recommended that a Culture-Based Approach should be considered as an alternative choice for English teachers in teaching spoof text.

<p>The study determined the effect of student-centered learning approach in teaching basic grammar of the tenth-grade students. Specifically, this study sought answers to following questions: 1). How does the result of the pre-test compare to that of post-test of the control and experimental groups? 2). Is there any significant difference in the results of the test between the control and experimental groups? 3). What is student-centered teaching guide in basic grammar that can be developed based on the findings of the study? It was applied an experimental research design in this study. The result in the post-test of the control and experimental groups showed that the computed the T value of 3.03 was higher than the tabular value of 2.03, at the degree of freedom of 34, at 5% level of significance. This condition rejects the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the mean scores in the post-test of the control and experimental groups. The student-centered teaching guide enhanced the students’ writing skill in the basic grammar of the tenth-grade students in the experimental group<em>.</em><em></em></p>

This research is designed to investigate the use of electronic dictionary in improving students� vocabulary mastery. This quantitative research applied quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group design by involving 65 second-grader of SMAN 1 Garawangi. There were two instruments used in this research, namely test, consisted of pretest and posttest, and questionnaire. As result, the findings showed that the mean score of experimental class on pretest was 53, and the mean score of experimental class achieved 86 after the treatment. The improvement of students� vocabulary mastery can also be seen from the level of significance (two-tailed) in paired t-test that was less than the alpha (0.000<0.05). It indicated that the null hypothesis was rejected and Ha was accepted which means that there was significant difference of means between pre-test and post-test of experimental class. Besides, most students endorsed ten items of questionnaire involving affective, behavioral, and cognitive aspects which means that most students in experimental class agreed that electronic dictionary can help them in improving their vocabulary mastery. Finally, the researcher concludes that the use of electronic dictionary can improve students� vocabulary mastery.Keywords: electronic dictionary, vocabulary mastery, quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group

This study used the descriptive developmental method utilizing the contextualized instructional materials. Respondents were composed of the school principals, master teachers and mathematics teachers who have been considered as experts in the scrutiny and critiquing of the instructional materials, grade 6 pupils who benefitted the developed instructional material were also included as respondents. The data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentage, mean, ranking a weighted mean. T-test was utilized to test the null hypothesis if there is a significant difference between the pre-test and posttest results of the pupils. The research instrument is a survey questionnaire. The assessment of the respondents were based on the different variables mentioned for the evaluation of an effective instructional materials. A five-point Likert’ Scale was used to indicate the assessment, these are: Very Acceptable (5), Acceptable (4), Moderately Acceptable (3), Less Acceptable (2), and Not acceptable (1). It can be depicted the variables included in the instructional material had an overall computed mean value of 4.20 and rated as very acceptable. This study found out that there is a significant difference of the pupils’ pretest and posttest after using the developed instructional materials. The result depicted that the computed t-value of 28.98 with the degrees of freedom of 49 is greater than the critical value of 1.645 at 0.05 level of significance which means there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean score of the pupils.

In a study of sex differences in mathematics achievement and attitude toward mathematics, a sample of 278 Standard 10 (Grade 12) students (95 boys and 183 girls) from seven senior secondary schools in the Umtata district of Transkei, South Africa, wrote tests in algebra and geometry and completed an attitude questionnaire. Analysis showed no significant difference between the mean scores of boys and girls in algebra but a significant difference between scores in geometry, with the mean score of boys being greater than that of girls. There was no significant difference between the mean scores of boys and girls on the Attitude Toward Mathematics scale, although boys had a significantly more positive Attitude Toward Geometry than girls. Significant low correlations were found between scores on Attitudes Toward Mathematics and scores in mathematics and between scores on Attitudes Toward Geometry and scores in geometry.

This research aimed to find out whether or not the use of guided questions in Tutorial System improved the students� speaking ability of Easy Speak. Easy Speak was an English course situated in Makassar. The method of this research was pre-experimental. In collecting data, the researcher used speaking test in pre-test and post-test. The population of the research was 737 students. In this research, the researcher used purposive sampling technique which consisted of 25 students. The results of this research showed that the mean score of pre-test were 62,17 and 75,15 in post-test and the value of t-test was 7,23 which is greater than t-table 2.05 at the level of significance (a) = 0.05, so the null hypotheses was rejected, and alternative hypotheses (H1) was accepted. The researcher concluded that there was significant difference of the students� speaking ability of Easy Speak after giving treatment using guided questions.

The objective of this research  was to find out whether or not  combining SUHUPU and three steps interview strategy improve students’ speaking ability at the first grade students of SMAN 1 Balauring. This research used pre-experimental method which one class given pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling technique. The total sample was 20 students. The result of the data indicated that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test, it was proved by the mean score of post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test (11.30>13.05). The value  of t-test was higher than t-table (20.261>2.093) at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom(df)=19. Based  on the finding and discussion of the research, it can be  concluded that by combining SUHUPU and three steps interview strategy can improve students’ speaking ability at the first grade students of SMAN 1Balauring.

This study aims to investigate whether the use of six selected short stories throughout the duration of a 14-week course could enhance students’ reading comprehension achievement at the end of the semester. Out of the six short stories read, three were chosen as in-class assignments known as ‘Personal Reading Logs’ (hereafter, PRLs). One group of semester two Diploma students taking a reading skills course was selected through a convenience sampling method. A pre-test was conducted by having the students answer a past semester reading quiz of which the results would then be compared to their post-test (final reading exam) results. A paired samples t-test revealed no significant difference in the reading scores of the pre-test and the post-test, t (17) = -.265, p > .05. Since the p-value was bigger than 0.05, this indicated that the mean reading score of the post-test (M = 50.556) was not significantly higher than the mean reading score of the pre-test (M = 49.722). Therefore, the null hypothesis which stated that there was no difference in the mean score of the pre-test and post-test was retained. Overall, the result refuted the findings of other studies promoting the effectiveness of using short stories to enhance L2 reading comprehension achievement.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of yogic practices on cardio-vascular efficiency. Material and methods: Total Forty (40) subject’s boys/girls were selected as the sample of the study through the random sampling and their age ranged between 20 to 25 years from the Department of Physical Education, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. The subjects were divided into two groups comprising 20 subjects in each group, namely group “A” (the experimental group) performs yogic practices (Asanas, Pranayamas and Kriyas) and group “B” (the control group) served as control. Statistical technique: for the assessment of the cardiovascular efficiency through Harvard step test pre and post-test was conducted and t-test was applied for the analysis. Result: revealed that there exist a significant difference between group A and group B, at .05 level of significance. On the basis of the pre and post-test among experimental and control group, experimental group found better than the control group on cardiovascular efficiency and significant result were found in this study.
