The study aims to know translation technique and translation quality of refusal strategy in Beautiful Malice novel. It was descriptive qualitative method with embedded case study. The data were obtained through content analysis and focus group discussion. They were then analyzed into domain, taxonomy and componential analysis to formulate cultural theme. The result shows that writer uses indirect and direct refusal strategy in which indirect one is mostly used. Besides, translator transfers those refusal strategies by using established equivalence, modulation, explicitation, variation, implicitation, pure borrowing, reduction, addition, addaptation, and paraphrase in which established equivalent is most frequently used. With using those techniques, the study indicates that translation quality is very good. They are 2.8 of accuracy and 2.9 of acceptability and readablity. Imperfection of translation quality is affected from the use of reduction and addition in relation to accuracy and the use of deletion in relation to those aspects of translation quality.

Translating the implied meanings in utterances is one of the trickiest situations translators may confront. One example is in translating utterances that flout the maxim of quality. When a speaker flouts the maxim of quality, they are implying further information that is not represented in the utterance. Translators use various translation techniques in order to convey the meaning of the original text in the most appropriate and acceptable form in the target text. This study investigates how translation techniques may affect the quality of a translation. The approach implemented in this study is pragmatics in translation. This study belongs to the field of descriptive qualitative research with an embedded case study. For data, we look at all the utterances which may be said to be flouting the maxim of quality in the source text and its translation. Content analysis and focus group discussion were applied as the methods to collect and analyze the data. A focus group discussion was used to assess translation quality. The majority of the data was classified as accurate and acceptable, while the rest was considered less accurate and inaccurate due to the application of the translation technique amplification (addition), discursive creation and literal translation. Some data was also found to be less acceptable due to literal translation and pure borrowing.

This research aims to describe: (1) the March 2015 National Geographic article Fleeing Terror, Finding Refuge and its March 2015 National Geographic Indonesia Indonesian translation Mencari Tempat Berlindung’s thematic structure and progression, (2) the translation techniques employed and its effect on the translation’s thematic structure and progression, and (3) its effect on the translation quality. This study belongs to the qualitative research at the descriptive level, employs embedded case study approach, and focuses on the translation product. The data consist of the Themes of the National Geographic Maret 2015 article Fleeing Terror, Finding Refuge and its National Geographic Indonesia Maret 2015 Indonesian translation Mencari Tempat Berlindung collected through content analysis and the result of the informant’s translation quality assessment collected through questionnaire and focus group discussion. This study revealed that the translation employs more marked Topical Theme than the source text and the percentage of the translation’s Rheme-based progressions (the simple linear and split Rheme progression) is higher than the source text’s. The thematic structure shifts—mostly a shift from the unmarked to the marked Topical Theme and vice-versa or a change in the Topical Theme constituent—can be caused by the use of these six translation techniques: transposition, modulation, reduction, amplification, established equivalent, and particularization. Of these six, particularization does not cause any Thematic progression shift. These six techniques that can cause a shift in the Thematic structure can also decrease the translation’s quality.

Keywords: Thematic structure, Thematic progression, translation techniques, translation quality assessment

This research deployed translation of circumstances, viewed from transitivity with the descriptive qualitative method. Its objectives were to describe the translation technique of the circumstances and to evaluate the quality of the translation based on accuracy and acceptability. It utilized document analysis and focus group discussion for data collection. The data were analyzed through the domain, taxonomy, componential analysis, and finding cultural value. Meanwhile, the research indicates the application of established equivalent, combination, modulation, transposition, paraphrasing, deletion, explicitation, discursive creation, and implicitation techniques are influenced by the form of a circumstance or an adverb. Furthermore, the application of established equivalent, combination, and implicitation produces a good translation based on accuracy compared to modulation, transposition, explicitation, and paraphrasing. The research concludes that the deployment of appropriate translation techniques produces a good translation.

The data which is used are utterance sentences containing command turn taking and its directive speech act responses in George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones novel and its translation. The result indicates that the translator uses established equivalent, variation, explication, borrowing, modulation, literal translation, transposition, implicitation, discursive creation, and generalization to translate the sentences. In terms of accuracy, the average rate of the translation is 2.6 out of 3. The score indicate that the translation of directive speech act in response to command turn taking in Game of Thrones novel have equivalent meaning from the source text to the target text.

This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. It aims to determine the translation techniques used to convey the sexist attitudes to the target language and its impact for the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The data of this research are 141 utterances that are obtained from both male and female characters. Those data were collected through content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. They were analyzed by using taxonomy, and componential analysis to see the cultural value. The result shows that there are 14 techniques which are applied in translating, those are; established equivalence, explicitation, modulation, pure borrowing, implicitation, paraphrase, generalitation, transposition, reduction, addition, discursive creation, particularization, compensation, and deletion. Furthermore, it reveals that the translation techniques determine the translation quality. Established equivalence results in the good quality of the translation. Meanwhile, the use of paraphrase produced a low quality translation in the target language. Moreover, the application of discursive creation results in non-sexist translation for two utterances.

The research aims to identify the students’ translation quality in translating Banyumas tourism texts. Moreover, this research tries to find out the effect of design thinking approach in translation class. This research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. In other words, this research describes the effect of design thinking approach to the students’ translation by dividing students of English Diploma Study Program, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman enrolling on Translation Indonesian-English class into two classes. Class A uses design thinking approach in translating the texts, while class B does not. The students focus on translating Banyumas tourism texts. After the students translate the texts, the researchers and raters do a focus group discussion to check and rate their translation quality in terms of accuracy. The result shows that the translation quality of class A is better than that of class B. It can be seen from the accuracy point of class A which is 2.95 meanwhile, class B has 2.90 for its accuracy. This proves that design thinking approach is suitable to teach translation.
