Path Planning in Outdoor Pedestrian Settings Using 2D Digital Maps

In this article, a framework for planning sidewalk-wise paths in data-limited pedestrian environments is presented by visually recognizing city blocks in 2D digital maps (e.g., Google Maps, and OpenStreet Maps) using contour detection, and by then applying graph theory to infer a pedestrian path from start to finish. Two main problems have been identified; first, several locations worldwide (e.g., suburban / rural areas) lack recorded data on street crossings and pedestrian walkways. Second, the continuous process of recording maps (i.e., digital cartography) is, to our current knowledge, manual and has not yet been fully automated in practice. Both issues contribute toward a scaling problem, in which the continuous monitoring and recording of such data at a global scale becomes time and effort consuming. As a result, the purpose of this framework is to produce path plans that do not depend on pre-recorded (e.g., using simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)) or data-rich pedestrian maps, thus facilitating navigation for mobile robots and people with visual impairment. Assuming that all roads are crossable, the framework was able to produce pedestrian paths for most locations where data on sidewalks and street crossings were indeed limited at 75% accuracy in our test-set, but certain challenges still remain to attain higher accuracy and to match real-world settings. Additionally, we describe certain works in the literature that describe how to utilize such path plans effectively.

Nowadays, the heart-related disease is rapidly rising. Most patients, in some cases, may not identify their health condition. Even in rural areas, doctors are not available 24x7. Due to the advancement of modern technology, these diseases can be detected early and can be treated on time. So, the developed device can continuously track the patient's heartbeat and temperature, and the recorded data can be sent to the concerned doctor so that treatment can be provided to the patient. Here the IoT (Internet of Things) is being used for monitoring the patient's health status and send wirelessly to the IoT server. This device can also be monitored from remote places. This device is mainly helpful for aged and disabled people who find it difficult to go to doctors daily or for patients who need continuous monitoring of their health status. The designed hardware will capture the real-time heartrate and temperature value and send the data to the concern IoT server using any mobile or Wi-Fi network having with internet facility. Before sending the data the preprocessing is being done by the attached microcontroller in the respective sensors module. The value sent in the IoT server will be used for generating the online graph through the Application Program Interface (API) that are used in developing the web and mobile application. In this system the authenticated user can view the output trough developed mobile application web application.

This paper is a contribution to the current knowledge of taxonomy, ecology and distribution of South American Cortinarius (Pers.) Gray. Cortinarius is among the most widely distributed and species-rich basidiomycete genera occurring with South American Nothofagaceae and species are found in many distinct habitats, including shrublands and forests. Due to their ectomycorrhizal role, Cortinarius species are critical for nutrient cycling in forests, especially at higher latitudes. Some species have also been reported as edible fungi with high nutritional quality. Our aim is to unravel the taxonomy of selected Cortinarius belonging to phlegmacioid and myxotelamonioid species based on morphological and molecular data. After widely sampling Cortinarius specimens in Patagonian Nothofagaceae forests and comparing them to reference collections (including holotypes), we propose five new species of Cortinarius in this work. Phylogenetic analyses of concatenated rDNA ITS-LSU and RPB1 sequences failed to place these new species into known Cortinarius sections or lineages. These findings highlight our knowledge gaps regarding the fungal diversity of South American Nothofagaceae forests. Due to the high diversity of endemic Patagonian taxa, it is clear that the South American Cortinarius diversity needs to be discovered and described in order to understand the evolutionary history of Cortinarius on a global scale.

The current knowledge of the pollution of Australian urban soils was reviewed with special reference to heavy metals. Increased community concern in recent years has resulted m a major upsurge in the investigation and rehabilitation of contaminated soils. This has led to a concomitant reassessment and development of regulatory procedures, and the establishment of some new environmental agencies. This review considers sources and extent of contamination, and approaches to the establishment of reference background levels in urban and rural areas. Assessment of contaminated sites has been largely based on overseas experience but site specific approaches relevant to Australian soils and climates are needed and are being developed by State authorities in collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand Environmental and Conservation Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council. The need for soil-based research and for standardized soil sampling procedures for site evaluation and action is stressed. Many opportunities exist for soil scientists in solving problems of soil contamination and rehabilitation.

Background: Adequate nutrition is a public health priority, particularly in low-income rural areas where there is a high prevalence of malnutrition and stunting. Baluchistan is an arid desert and mountainous province with the worst health indicators in Pakistan. The objective of this research study was to identify current knowledge, attitudes and practices of vulnerable women with young children residing in remote areas of Baluchistan and assess their information needs to guide the development of a BCC nutrition strategy materials and activities. Methods: This study design incorporated formative research via eight focus group discussions with demand and supply-side program beneficiaries (n=124) to assess current nutrition knowledge, attitudes and beliefs toward kitchen gardens and proposed nutrition resources. Semi-structured interviews (n=16) were also conducted to provide program intelligence from key informants. A literature review supported the development of discussion agenda based on predominant behavioral theories. Data analysis was conducted with in vivo qualitative software coupled with grounded theory with qualitative findings triangulated. Results: The study identified important factors for the development of BCC resources and activities. Opportunities included effective nutrition education, improved income and livelihoods from kitchen gardens, women’s empowerment and gender equality. Challenges included traditional cultural practices, entrenched food preparation behaviour, environmental and infrastructural constraints. Conclusions: Lessons learned highlight the benefits of integrating formative research methods with a comprehensive literature review and behavioural theories for the development of BCC resources for nutrition programs in insecure and resource-constrained settings.

With modernization and technology enhancements on a global scale, environmental consciousness has also been increasing in recent days. Various technologies and automobile industries are vandalized with sustainable solutions and green technologies. Transportation via roadways is mostly preferred for distant travel as well, despite the advancements in airways and railways, due to less capital outlay, door to door service possibility in rural areas etc. The conventional fuel vehicles are a huge contributor to environmental pollution. Electric vehicles are an optimal solution to this issue. The lives of the common masses are not impacted largely by the electric vehicles despite their market commercialization since a few decades. It is due to certain challenges associated with the electrical vehicles. A 100% efficient perpetual machine does not exist yet. Predominantly, challenges related to charging, hinders the success of e-vehicles. Frequent charging is required in case of long-distance travel and other scenarios in the existing vehicles. Based on the respective governments, extensive changes are made in the infrastructure to overcome the issues at the charging stations. In this paper, an enhanced wireless charging module for electric vehicles is presented. The use of multiple coils is emphasized for building up energy and transmitting it. The inductive power transfer mechanism and efficiency of the system are improved with the design of a three-phase coil. The mechanism for assessment of the energy consumed in e-vehicles is also discussed.

This chapter provides a summary relating to the functioning of two projects in the two Southern States of India, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, to show how through broadband deployment in rural areas the digital divide can be bridged. By focusing on the implementation of the two projects, the chapter illustrates their contribution in practically using the broadband technologies in overcoming the hurdles to bridging the digital divide, and highlights the critical success factors as identified during the functioning of the projects which helped the states in achieving their goals. The chapter also reveals through its analysis that the accessibility of services through broadband technology have brought an opportunity to the citizens to become a part of the current knowledge revolution, besides bringing about a great technological transformation to the areas where it is implemented, and thus contributed to bridging the digital divide. The chapter is finally concluded by proving that moving from a manual to electronic process with broadband technology as an enabler; the States set an example, which will serve as a set of guidelines for application of similar projects in other geographical settings.

Flaviviruses are major emerging human pathogens on a global scale. Some flaviviruses can infect the central nervous system of the host and therefore are regarded as neurotropic. The most clinically relevant classical neurotropic flaviviruses include Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. In this review, we focus on these flaviviruses and revisit the concepts of flaviviral neurotropism, neuropathogenicity, neuroinvasion, and resultant neuropathogenesis. We attempt to synthesize the current knowledge about interactions between the central nervous system and flaviviruses from the neuroanatomical and neuropathological perspectives and address some misconceptions and controversies. We hope that revisiting these neuropathological concepts will improve the understanding of flaviviral neuroinfections. This, in turn, may provide further guiding foundations for relevant studies of other emerging or geographically expanding flaviviruses with neuropathogenic potential, such as Zika virus and dengue virus, and pave the way for intelligent therapeutic strategies harnessing potentially beneficial, protective host responses to interfere with disease progression and outcome.

Abstract Experimental streams are bounded and partly enclosed lotic units that facilitate the simulation of certain aspects of natural stream ecosystems under controlled conditions. We summarized the current knowledge regarding experimental streams in order to support researchers in designing and undertaking future studies using experimental streams. We observed an increase in the number of such studies since 1975. The geographically uneven distribution of studies suggests that the generalization of findings to global scale may not be straightforward. Our results indicate that macroinvertebrates, fish, and algae are the most frequently studied organisms and that the size of the experimental streams was related to the focal organism group(s) studied. The size of the units decreased over time, while the number of treatments, interpreted as the combination of the levels of factors, increased. These results suggest that biologically complex studies have gradually been replaced by biologically less complex ones. In contrast, the experimental complexity (the number of treatments) and the statistical power (number of replication) increased. Finally, we identified a number of important, but poorly documented pieces of information regarding experimental stream systems and experimental protocols and made recommendations for future research.

<p>Based on 10 authentic audio-recorded data, the study aims to explore the dynamics of the insurance sales agent-client interactions in transformational China’s rural areas from a socio-cultural perspective. It sets out from generalizing the specific discursive patterns from moves and steps (Askehave &amp; Swales, 2001; Bhatia, 2005) of the utterances made in the agent-client interactions, governed by communicative purposes. For the first move, warming up, it deserves more attention as it serves crucial functions in the interactions. The paper delineates the different types and functions of warming up, and relates them to the underlying operating mechanism of rural agent-client interactions; another vital move, establishing credentials and trust, has also been analyzed in details, since trust is the pillar stone in the conclusion of insurance sales. Through the analysis, we hope to depict the transforming nature of the modern Chinese rural society, where old and traditional value system has been, for a large part, demolished, while new value system is yet to be established.</p>

Abstract Wastewater generated on a global scale has become a significant source of water resources which necessitates appropriate management strategies. However, the complexities associated with wastewater are lack of economically viable treatment systems, especially in low- and middle-income countries. While many types of treatment systems are needed to serve the various local issues, we propose natural treatment systems (NTS) such as natural wetlands that are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and can be jointly driven by public bodies and communities. In order for it to be part of wastewater management, this study explores the NTS potential for removal of pollutants, cost-effectiveness, and reuse options for the 1.20 million m3/day of wastewater generated in Hyderabad, India. The pilot study includes hydro-geophysical characterization of natural wetland to determine pollutant removal efficiency and its effective utilization for treated wastewater in the peri-urban habitat. The results show the removal of organic content (76–78%), nutrients (77–97%), and microbes (99.5–99.9%) from the wetland-treated wastewater and its suitability for agriculture applications. Furthermore, the wetland efficiency integrated with engineered interventions led to the development of NTS models with different application scenarios: (i) constructed wetlands, (ii) minimized community wetlands, and (iii) single outlet system, suitable for urban, peri-urban and rural areas, respectively.
