The word culture is a word that contains solid cultural elements of a particular group or area. This word cannot be understood directly without any knowledge or explanation. This study includes an analysis of the word culture with the material object of the historical novel ‘Amāliqat al-Shimāl by Najīb al-Kīlānī. The word culture contained in the novel was collected, then included in each category based on the division of the cultural elements of Peter Newmark. The method used is descriptive qualitative by presenting the data in the analysis. The cultural words analyzed are given a general and concise explanation accompanied by pictures. This study aims to understand the novel’s content and strengthen the word culture, which is found as the Nigerian identity, which is the background of the events in the novel. The study results found 21 cultural words that have an identical effect on Nigeria. The cultural words are detailed in several subcategories, including one animal name, one plant name and eight place names in the ecological culture category, one name for traditional clothing in the material culture category, five names of state figures in social culture, and two names of beliefs, and three names of ethnic groups in the variety of social organization cultures.

The objectives of the study are (1) To categorize the cultural terms found in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Parukinto The Dancer(2) To describe the techniques implemented in the translation of cultural terms in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Parukinto The Dancer (3) To find out the contribution of novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer to Cross Cultural Understanding teaching.This is a descriptive research with qualitative analysis. The writer used following steps: (a) the writer read the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk by Ahmad Tohari and its translation The Dancer by Rene T.A. Lysloff, (b) the writer search the cultural terms in the novel, (c) the writer analyzed the cultural terms found in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and its translation The Dancer, (d) the writer analyzed the technique of translation, (e) the writer analyzed both of the novel to find out the possible contribution to Cross Cultural Understanding teaching. The result of this research are (1) Categories cultural terms found in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer. There are four categories of cultural terms related to Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer. Those are material culture, social culture, activities and procedures, and then gestures and habits. (2) technique implemneted in the translation of cultural terms in the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk into The Dancer. In translation the novel, the translator applied borrowing technique i.e without any change the word of culture. (3) contribution of the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk and The Dancer to Cross Cultural Understanding teaching. The contribution of translation analysis of cultural terms in the novel is giving information and developing the student’s knowledge. It also can be the new media of Cross Cultural Understanding teaching.

Summary Growing interest in Spanish-speaking countries in Lithuania leads to the increased number of translations of Spanish and Latin American literature. Therefore, it is important to analyse translations from Spanish into Lithuanian and vice versa to improve the quality of translation work. One of the most difficult elements to translate are culture-specific items that reveal cultural uniqueness. The novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez contains many culture-specific items related to Colombia, that could be difficult to translate. This article aims to analyse and compare translation strategies of culture-specific items from Spanish into Lithuanian, which were used in 1972 by Elena Treinienė and in 2017 by Valdas V. Petrauskas, to translate the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude”. Firstly, this article defines the concepts of cultural elements and culture-specific items. It also discusses the classification of culture-specific items based on the works of Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Sergej Vlahov, Sider Florin and Laura Santamaria Guinot. Furthermore, this article describes translation strategies of culture-specific items emphasized by Amparo Hurtado Albir, Eirlys Davies, Georges L. Bastin and Pekka Kujamäki. In this research, culture-specific items are counted and described using Santamaria Guinot’s classification, which allows to claim that there are 69 different culture-specific items in “One Hundred Years of Solitude” and they are reflected by 252 examples in the text. These culture-specific items are related with concepts of ecology, social structures, cultural institutions, social universe and material culture. The most common ones are culture-specific items from the category of ‘material culture’. The results of the research allow distinguishing six translation strategies, used in different frequency: transcription, equivalence of situations, actualisation, usage of exoticism, extension and explication, and omission. Both Lithuanian translators Treinienė and Petrauskas mainly used strategies of transcription and equivalence of situations. The analysis of the translation of culture-specific items was performed using the methods of quantitative, comparative, and descriptive translation analysis.

Culture and humans are interdependent and fused by ecological processes and natural energy cycles. The author as the creator of the work cannot be separated from the cultural environment from which it originates. This study aims to reveal (1) cultural elements and (2) representation of cultural ecology in the novel. The material object of this study is Wisran Hadi's Persiden, Generasi Ketujuh novel. The uses a qualitative descriptive method that describes the research subject based on the facts of the visible cultural ecology. Data analysis of the study is done by classifying data, categorizing data, and finding important issues related to the study of cultural ecology. In addition, it is also supported by interactive-dialectical analysis or back and forth to track the overall findings. The results of the study reveal that (1) the universal element of culture (cultural system) is the basis for discussion of cultural ecology. The cultural system is very dominant and even becomes the author's frame of mind in presenting the reality of life in his work. The strengths and relations built by each system represent the operation of cultural ecology in literature; (2) cultural ecology can be considered through a shift in people's mindsets in adapting to their environment. This adaptation has implications for the division of community groups into two. First, one community makes adaptation by maintaining local identity, namely tradition. Second, other societies make adaptation by leaving the tradition to the modern (global) trend. Keywords: culture ecology, elements of culture, adaptation

ABSTRACTThis research, entitled Translation of Cultural Terms in Mirah of Banda Novel, deals with the analysis  analysis of the translation of cultural terms in the novel. The main objectives of the study were to answer the research problems under study; which is to identify categories of cultural terms  which found in the novel,Mirah of Banda . The data were collected from  Mirah dari Banda, as the SL; and Mirah of Banda, as the TL, by applying documentation method of close-reading and note-taking technique. Then, the data was classified into some groups according to their categories  and displayed in table. The data was descriptively analyzed based on theories from Newmark to find out the answer of the research problems. The result of the data analysis shows that there were six categories of cultural words in Mirah of Banda Novel namely (1) ecology (2) material culture, (3) social culture, (4) custom, concept,( 5) gestures and habits and (6) Indonesian metaphor and Indonesian metaphor was the new categories found besides the prior categories which is proposed by Newmark.   In detail, it is dominated of ecology in 33.75% (27 data), material culture 25.00%  (20 data), social culture 23.75% (19 data), custom 6, 25% (5 data), concept 6. 25% (5 data),gestures and habits 1. 25 % (1 datum), and Indonesian Metaphor 3.75% (3 data) and The cultural words in Mirah of Banda Novel were translated by applying  ten  strategies, namely: transference (12%), cultural equivalent (2,5%), functional equivalent (10%), descriptive equivalent (2,5%), synonymy (20%), through translation (22,5%), modulation (6, 25%),compensation (5%), couplet (1, 25%), as a new strategy, trope change (3,75%)Keywords: Translation, Cultural Terms, Mirah of Banda Novel,Concept

This study attempted to analyze the accuracy of cultural terms translation in A Thousand Splendid Suns novel. The objectives of the study were to describe types of cultural terms found in the novel, to identify translation strategies used, and to analyze their accuracy. This study was conducted qualitatively. Text analysis was done by comparing the original and the translated novel. The results of the study showed that there were 108 data of cultural terms that were classified into cultural categorization (ecology, material culture, social culture, organizations, customs, and ideas). The accuracy of cultural terms translation was presented in each categorization of cultural terms. The analysis of accuracy translation was supported by the accuracy scale given by three expert raters, and it later combined the strategies employed by the translator in translating cultural terms translation: translation by changing the lexicon, by translation by loan word, translation by cultural substitution, translation by paraphrasing using unrelated words, literal translation, translation by more general words, translation by less expressive word, and last one translation by omission. Four categorizations of cultural terms translation in the Indonesian translated novel were classified into accurate translation.

This paper utilizes Material Engagement Theory (MET), which examines material culture as a dynamic and integral component of human cognitive systems, in order to explore the relationship between Cycladic marble sculpting and the complex social organization evinced at the sites of Dhaskalio and Kavos on the island of Keros. The article shows how the development of Cycladic sculpting in conjunction with transforming settlement patterns suggests that the figurines emerged as part of a kinshipping dynamic. In this context, evidence from the cognitive sciences reveals how Cycladic figurines were profound attention-capturing technologies which shaped the development of intersubjectivity and collective activity. Cycladic marble provided a medium through which a semiotics of value could be generated, circulated and manipulated across the archipelago. The article argues that marble artefacts formed part of a distributed cognitive system which enabled the regional organization of long-range voyaging regimes centred on Dhaskalio-Kavos. The role of Cycladic sculpture in mediating maritime social interactions is clarified by examining the dynamics of social cognition and the organizational burdens of long-range voyaging culture. The relationship between marble, social interaction and longboat voyaging provides a strong explanation for the development and transformation of Keros as well as for broader chronological developments in the region. Cycladic sculpting traditions mediated the shifting burdens upon social cognition during the Early Bronze Age, facilitating the novel forms of social organization in the central Cyclades as a response to both the pressures and the opportunities of the Aegean world. Keros provides an exemplary case study of material culture's role in extending the boundaries of social cognition in ways that enable social complexity to emerge at new scales.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran tentang sikap kebangsaananak muda Indonesia pada tiga novel populer yaitu Ali Topan Anak Jalanan karya TeguhEsha, Lupus: Makhluk Manis dalam Bis karya Hilman Hariwijaya, dan Balada Si Roy karya GolaGong. Alasan pemilihan objek penelitian di atas adalah karena ketiga novel tersebut memilikitingkat popularitas yang tinggi pada tiap zamannya sehingga membuat tokoh utamanyamenjadi representasi anak muda Indonesia pada zamannya masing-masing. Pertanyaanpertanyaanyang memandu tulisan ini adalah 1) Bagaimana keindonesiaan digambarkanpada ketiga novel tersebut dan 2) Bagaimana sikap kebangsaan direpresentasikan tokohanak muda pada ketiga novel tersebut. Dari hasil kajian didapatkan simpulan bahwasikap kebangsaan yang ditampilkan pada ketiga novel tersebut memiliki tingkatan yangberbeda-beda. Novel Ali Topan Anak Jalanan menunjukkan sikap kebangsaan dengan lebihkritis. Hegemoni orde Baru pada masa itu belum berhasil karena novel populer masihmenampilkan tokoh anak muda yang kritis dan cenderung memberontak terhadap nilainilaiideologi Orde Baru. Periode ’80-an menampilkan novel populer dengan tokoh anakmuda yang memiliki sikap kebangsaan yang terbelah. Pertama, anak muda yang dapatmenerima realitas yang dikontruksi Orde Baru, dengan menjalani sistem tersebut danmemposisikan dirinya sebagai bagian dari sistem tersebut. Hal itu direpresentasikan olehtokoh Lupus dalam novel Lupus: Makhluk Manis dalam Bis. Kedua, anak muda yang tidakdapat menerima realitas yang dikonstruksi Orde Baru, dengan cara keluar dari bagiansistem tersebut. Hal itu direpresentasikan oleh tokoh Roy dalam Balada Si Roy.Kata kunci: kebangsaan, anak muda, novel populer, Orde BaruAbstractThis study aims to obtain a picture of Indonesian nationalism in the three popularnovels that were Ali Topan Anak Jalanan by Teguh Esha, Lupus: Makhluk Manis dalam Bisby Hilman Hariwijaya, dan Balada Si Roy by Gola Gong. The reason for choosing the object ofresearch above is that all three novels are recognized to have high levels of popularity in eachera so that made the main characters became a representation of Indonesian youth at that time.The questions that guide the writing are 1) How Indonesianness described in the third novel?2) How does nationalism represented by youth in these three novels. From the study results isobtained the conclusion that nationalism is displayed on the third novel has a level different.Ali Topan Anak Jalanan show a nationalism more critically. The New Order’s hegemony atthat time has not been successful because the novel still showing a critical youth and tends torevolt against the ideological values of the New Order. The ‘80s period featured a popular novelwith a youth character who had a split nationalism. First, the youth who can accept the realitythat the New Order has constructed, with the system and position itself as part of the system.It was represented by the Lupus’s character in the Lupus: Makhluk Manis dalam Bis. Second,the youth who can not accept the facts constructed by the New Order, by going out from thatpart of the system. Abstract This article traces some of the fundamental poetological changes that the traditional crime novel undergoes in the work of the Swiss author Friedrich Glauser at the beginning of the 20th century. The rational-analytical, conservative approach of the criminal novel in the 19th century implied – according to Luc Boltanski – the separation of an epistemologically structured, institutionalized order of “reality” and a chaotic, unruly, unformatted “world” – a separation that is questioned, but reestablished in the dramaturgy of crime and its resolution. By shifting the attention from the logical structure of ‘whodunnit’ to the sensual material culture and “atmosphere” that surrounds actions and people, Glauser’s novels blur these epistemological and ontological boundaries. The article shows how in Die Fieberkurve, the second novel of Glauser’s famous Wachtmeister Studer-series, material and sensual substances develop a specific, powerful dynamic that dissipates, complicates, crosslinks, and confuses the objects and acts of investigation as well as its narration. The material spoors, dust, fibers, fingerprints, intoxicants and natural resources like oil and gas – which lead the investigation from Switzerland to North Africa – trigger a new sensual mode of perception and reception that replaces the reassuring criminological ideal of solution by the logic of “dissolution”. The novel thereby demonstrates the poetic impact of the slogan of modernity: matter matters.

This article deals with Philippe Druillet's three-volume comic adaptation (1980–1985) of Salammbô, Gustave Flaubert's historical novel from 1862, set three centuries BC. Flaubert was famous for not wanting his texts illustrated: he argued that the preciseness of images would undo the poetic vagueness of his written words. The article examines how Druillet tackles the challenge of graphically representing Flaubert's canonical work without reducing the priestess Salammbô into a given type. The analysis shows a dynamic adaptation process in which Druillet gives a kaleidoscopic form to Flaubert's text. His variation on the Salammbô character foregrounds photography, a medium historically relevant to the novel but also to Druillet's own artistic training. Featuring his character Lone Sloane in the role of Mathô, the adaptation proves to be a highly personal appropriation of the novel, where Druillet enhances an autobiographical dimension of his work previously hinted at in La Nuit and Gaïl.
